Chikunguniya

My town Madurai has recently turned notorious for the wide prevalence of chikunguniya- a very, very painful viral fever. We, the old couple, living alone are now reeling under it. My younger sister is my trusted, sensible doctor. Tablets and injections are seeing us out of this very dreadful ailment. Our children are very concerned about us. I told my daughter,'I'm not a science student; I don't know human anatomy; now I know all the joints in my body!' Horrid!
What is more horrid is the callous practice of the city's doctors in giving steroid injections to the patients! My sister and her doctor husband(dental surgeon) believe steroid is a life-saving drug and must be used judiciously, only when the situation is critical-ie when life is immediate danger. But chikunguniya is a terribly painful fever but not a life-threatening ailment. What is the necessity for this reckless practice? My sister has observing with utmost sadness how the skin specialists and bone specialists are prescribing steriods indiscriminately and thoughlessly. And now this misfortune of chikunguniya affecting the city and unleashing this steroid spree makes me repeat ThiruviLaiyaadal movie's dialogue- ennadaa ithu maduraikku vantha sOthanai?
The innocent, gullible patients who are given steroids now for chikunguniya are going to develop a dependency on steroids even to treat a common cold. And what do I see in some more years from now? Kidney centres being crowded!!! :shaking: What a horrible way to say goodbye to this world! :twisted:

I was told the ill effects of this ailment last for years:-( One of my Palakkad friends - young man in 20's and recently married - got it a couple of years back but still suffers from it as he can't drive his car longer than 2 hours or so.

Must be a strange kind of virus that leaves lasting effects!

Yes, the older the patient the longer the effects! :( I'm telling my hubby that we shall buy walking sticks soon! :lol:
We were horrified to learn a little while ago that the virus has crossed the seas! Our neice's family in Dubai visiting Madurai last week and on their return neice's husband is afflicted with the horrible fever!

two days ago someone spread the rumour that
karuppetti is good for this :curse:

and within two days, its price went high and now one kg of karuppetti costs rs 150. :huh:

I'm not sure if u believe in homeopathy... there is a preventive for chikunguniya in homeopathy... maybe u can recommend it to ur friends & relatives so atleast they don't become victims to chikunguniya... even if they don't trust homeopathy, there's no harm in trying it...

since there's no preventive for chikunguniya, swine flu etc in allopathy, there's no harm in trying the preventive medicines available in homeopathy... Tht's the point I wanted to make...

Once again I'm with dev :-) When there was this big outbreak / news flashes of chikun in TN a couple of years back, many of my relatives got affected. However, NONE among those who took the "preventive homeo" stuff.

Whether that was the reason or they had resistance even otherwise can definitely be debated. In any case, they didn't have any adverse effects because they took the homeo stuff. Since it's inexpensive without any grave side effects, there should be no harm trying it :-)
