P_R, Galle is notorious for slowing down after day 2 and the batting should get easy...Herath unlike Rehman is slower through the air and the batsmen should have enough time to read him off the pitch and Randiv is not even a patch on Ajmal...Lakmal seems slippery but other than these Eng won't be facing major challenge other their usual brain fart of reverting to sweep when in doubt.

Opening - 82 runs, 2nd wicket - 111, pietersen and co - 100+. 290 odd for 4. 50 runs from there easy doozy for Prior Swann Patel and Broad, if any of them is needed in the first place. If Welegedara can hang on for an hour, Alastair can hang on for a day, which might not even be required. England ARE NOT hapless India to lose 8 overseas matches in succession. Graeme Swann backs England to beat Sri Lanka in Galle
Graeme Swann has backed England to make history by chasing down a fourth-innings target of 340 to beat Sri Lanka in the first Test in Galle.
England, who have never chased more than 332, require a further 229 to win with eight wickets in hand.
But Swann, who took 6-82 in Sri Lanka's second innings, told BBC Sport: "If I was a betting man I would back England heavily as we're here to make history.
Obviously we'd like to chase a few less but we've made a decent start."
England will resume with Jonathan Trott unbeaten on 40 and Kevin Pietersen 29 not out, and Swann believes they can take England towards the target through sensible batting.
"It's a very good deck. It's a slow pitch but the outfield is quick, there are boundaries to be scored and you can rotate the singles as well," he said.
"A couple of the Sri Lanka players showed that with a bit of aptitude and a willingness to stay around you can become very hard to budge and we have to take that on board."
Swann also denied that England's 3-0 series whitewash by Pakistan earlier this year - a series in which no England player scored a century - would weigh heavily on the team.
"It's for the press to say there's extra pressure," he said. "There's pressure every time you're in a chase in a Test and we won't be dwelling on what's gone before.
"There's a Test to be won and a series to be won and that's all we're thinking about."
The weight of history was also of little concern to Swann as Andrew Strauss's team look to surpass the 322 England scored to beat Australia in Melbourne in 1928.
Whenever you get into a fourth-innings chase you see the scores posted of the largest total but for me that's all poppycock," Swann said.
"History is there to be made and I couldn't give a monkey's if someone chased down 300 in 1912 or 1915 or whatever. It's 2012 and we've got to win tomorrow."
Both former England spinner Phil Tufnell and former batsman Geoffrey Boycott believe England can reach their target.
"England should, if they get their heads down and play the percentages, be able to knock these [runs] off. But I think it's 50-50," Tufnell told BBC Radio 5 live.
Boycott added: "I haven't seen any balls jump and pop. I haven't seen anything that should worry a batsman and if they can stop themsleves from doing crazy things [they can do it]."

Moan of the day

England supporters have had a few grumbles during this match. On the opening day it was about being exploited by Sri Lanka Cricket, who charged between LKR 5,000 ($39) and LKR 7,500 ($59) for a ticket. In the end, the ground has been well populated throughout but plenty of fans have also taken to the ramparts of the Dutch fort. On the fourth day they found that for one area of it they were being charged LKR 1,000 ($8) for the privilege. That might just seem good business sense - supply and demand - but one fan suggested that because the fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site it should be free for all.

Don't know what's happening to Strauss, Cook - the guys who have played a crucial part in their ascent to the top (Strauss centuries in both innings in Chennai last time).
They just have to play a long long innings for things to work.

I saw the highlights yesterday - it was not so much like the cluelessness against Ajmal and Rahman. They were doing stupid things. It was not like they were being outfoxed or anything. Just crazy.

They are capable of holding their nerve and fighting. Heck they have hung by their teeth to draw the matches in SA a couple of years back. enna oru thrill!
Now it's like they have resigned to being unable to play spin. One attack...bolabolannu vizhundhirrAinga.

1. Finn is a better wicket taker than Broad 2. Broad didn't take that many anyway in the first test 3. Bresnan for Patel might simply induce Lanka to give a walk-over. If Tim Brezhnev plays, England will win. Period. 3. Accidentally, England seem close to pick the ultimate winning XI in Lanka. It's called destiny. It is anglo-saxon, and a close friend of St George. That's why they'll dominate the sport - on and off the field. That is why even when BCCI has all the power, most decisions in Cricket Admin tend to go through only if England benefit, directly or indirectly.

I wouldn't accuse England of racism in team selection. They'll choose anyone who does well for them. Yes, the standards expected may be stricter for Asian origin players but no more than the similar case with Southies in Indian setup or Victorians in Australia. Eventually, they'll tend to apply "greatest" tags only to their own but that's a different story. Selection for next match will always be focussed on who they think can win the match.

Flau did you see Kartikeya Date's post about the comedy match between India and Safrica: http://cricketingview.blogspot.in/2012/03/new-ground-broken-in-cricket-in-south.html

For the first time in 5551 international matches - Tests, ODIs and now T20s, a team has won a cricket match without taking a single wicket. It signals the extent to which T20 cricket has skewed the contest between bat and ball in favor of the bat.

To say that T20 games favor the bat more than longer forms of the game, is to merely point out an obvious outcome. A more interesting and less obvious aspect of shortened innings length, is that it reduces the intensity of the contest between bat and ball.

This is true if intensity is understood to depend on a concern for consequences - if the merit of the ball is to matter. Because the contest is so short, and because batting sides have 10 wickets to play with over 20 overs, they don't have to care about the merit of the ball. They would be fools to do so.

Plum - Once my english landlord expressed concerns when Monty's family didn't like him playing for England esp against India. He was least bothered about it but he was a bit puzzled to see british people supporting other countries. when I was there, I thought people who hate asians are only a tiny minority. At that time, it was the labour govt. But it was terrible to see race riots under this new govt. I lived in bradford and have seen Pakistanis narrating the race riots in the early 2000s. So, I am not too sure whether it is not there completely. % might vary.

Mahela Jayawardene has insisted that Sri Lanka will shelve all notion of playing for a draw in the second Test against England at the P Sara Oval even though that is all they need to secure their first series victory since 2009.

"We'll try and win the series 2-0 as that's when we play our best cricket," he said. "When you are playing a team like England you have to be aggressive, play to win from ball one and look to get in front of them. That's what we will try to do.

"As a team we need to be consistent. It is important for us to have a really good Test match and we'll play to win. To do that we need to do a lot of hard work like we did in Galle. We were put under pressure in certain situations and we came up strong."

Since they beat New Zealand 2-0 in 2009 Sri Lanka have lost five and drawn two Test series. They inflicted England's fourth straight defeat with their 75-run victory in Galle and can knock them off the top of the world rankings with a series victory. Jayawardene believes they remain a huge threat and said the difficulties they have had in Asia is like a team from the subcontinent struggling overseas.

"In the last few years they beat Australia in Australia and they played very good cricket in South Africa as well. They play really well in English conditions," he said. "There are five or six teams in the world who are playing some really good cricket and on any given day in different conditions they can beat each other. That's good for the game.

"England have set standards in the last two years. It's been difficult for them away from home in the subcontinent but for us it's about challenging them and moving on. When we play in conditions which are tougher for us, it's up to us to try and go and challenge ourselves and be consistent. That's a good balance to have."

Jayawardene expected the pitch at the P Sara Oval, which is staging its first Test since 2010, to offer something for batsmen and bowlers. The day before the game cracks were appearing as the surface dried out and they could provide some inconsistent bounce as the match wears on.

"For batsmen it gives good value for shots with a fast outfield," he said. "Most of our tracks have been result-oriented in the last six or seven years."

Sri Lanka will make two changes to their side with Angelo Mathews and Dhammika Prasad replacing Dinesh Chandimal and the injured Chanaka Welegedara. Jayawardene said Mathews would most likely to be played as a specialist batsman but had been bowling in the nets and added he would "see how he felt".

When Mathews was ruled out of the first Test the chairman of selectors, Ashantha de Mel, said his bowling days could be over although with seven wickets at 71.57 that would not be a major loss. A Test average of 39.85 after 22 Tests, with a career-best 105 not out against Australia is a solid base from which to build a career as a specialist batsman. Although he has replaced Chandimal for this Test, they are the future of Sri Lanka's middle order
