Second Test - Day 1
England won the toss and decided to bat first

Inns 1: England - 287 for 9 in 80 overs ( J Hildreth - 141* , Bresnan - 37, Anderson - 18*). ( Steyn - 7/87,)
Highlights:
Dale Steyn inspired a ferocious come back for South Africa, producing 3 unplayable deliveries to rock the top order and leave England reeling at 36/4. Cook continued his disappointing tour fending an early awkward bouncer from Steyn to Duminy at gully. Duminy had been brought in to strengthen the shaky batting lineup which was routed in the previous test by the World Champions.
Trott got a dynamite of an inswinger which passed his defence even before his brain wires read the message "snorter" from his cognition systems. He made 2. Pietersen gifted his wicket to the profligate de Lange, who along with Philander had been having a miserable tour in a country where they were expected to contribute to a champion Saffer attack.
A battling Strauss could not cheat death at the hands of Steyn this time, unlike the first test, and feel in the latter's 6th over, edging straight to the keeper. In walked Hildreth, making his debut in place of the silky but not so steely Bopara, whose England career now seems to be well and truly over.
He signalled his intentions with a fierce square cut off Steyn off his first ball. With Bell continuing in his dour, determined mode, the pair raised hopes with a fire-and-isabgol partnership, that took the score to 65, when Steyn produced another unplayable ball which Bell could only fend off to short leg , in the 10th over of his spell, in a piece of what could have been called inspirational captaincy by Smith, except that he ran his best bowler aground, and Steyn bowled the rest of his spells a shadow of his ferocious self, thus letting England escape to safety.
The rest of the Saffer bowlers continued to demonstrate the difference betwen a great bowling attack that their opponents are and the bowling attakc with one graet bowler that they are. Hildreth exploded with a 45 ball 50 by Lunch, ably supported by a battling Prior, who, after a quiet summer against Windies, and a blob in the first test, struggled but hung on to take England to Lunch at 126/5.

The first over post lunch saw Steyn come back with his breath partly restored, and he immediately struck, clean bowling Prior. 132/6.
It was at this juncture that England found the true reservoirs of their spirit, talent and greatness as in walked Bresnan, blunting a tiring Steyn with a straight bat and a stout heart. He protected Hildreth ably from Steyn, and Hildreth made hay at the other end. "It was like facing Australia at one end, and Ilford 2nd XI at another", he would paraphrase a famous statement from the past, later in the press conference, adding insult to Saffers' injury.
Hildreth gained in confidence, depositing Tahir for 3 straight sixes, and ferociously cutting and pulling the errant Philander and de Lange. Kallis bowled a few tight overs from the Steyn end, but was blunted by Bresnan who perhaps thought that he was facing the Ilford 2nd Xi from the same end he had faced the Ausralian attack a few minutes earlier.
England progressed serenely to 213/6 by Tea. Hildreth had to endure a nervous 20 minutes as he walked off at 99*

Post-Tea, Steyn came for his third spell, and once again, refreshed by the partial rest, struck with a vicious snorter, climbing even on the portly Bresnan. Bresnan could only swung wildly and depart caught and bowled by a roaring Steyn. An inspired Steyn produced the ball of the series to Broad next, taking his middle stump to the boundary, almost. A petulant Broad, however, referred the dismissal to the third umpire, and couldnt believe himself, when the OUT sign was flashed. His profane outburst that resulted, ofcourse, will not attract the match referee's attention, Nor should it, Broad is God.
After a couple of streaky boundaries, Swann fell to Tahir, stepping out and swiping at a leg break that actually turned, which seemed to surprise Swann. 238/9. Hildreth meanwhile had reached his debut century.
It looked like South Africa had eventually fought back and that England looked like folding up for 250. But then, they forgot who was the #11 batsman of England was. James Anderson, the regular nightwatchman of England, with a stellar history of stickin around inconveniently for the opponents. And stick around, he did, as Hildreth faced, for the first time in the match, the bulk of Steyn overs. To his credit, the young man survived a fierce spell, by the skin of his teeth, and managed to take England to 287/9 by the end., with the Saffers looking deflated.
Mike Selvey of Guardian hit the nail on the head, when he said that England could declare here and win the next 2-3 series by an innings without batting again.

(Not ime to further report the match) but briefly, England extended their total to 360 and then bowled out Saffa for 28 followed by collapsing themselves to 68, in response to which they bundled Saffa for 2 again.

In the third test, KP made 406 and Trott 302 as Saffa piled up 791/5 decl. Trott and KP broke the partnership recor din Tests with 682, beating the 624 by Jaya and Sanga against Saffa. In the post day confernce, Smith, poiting the silver lining, said that he was happy that while the highest aprtnership in Test history earlier was against Saffa, now it had been achieved by 2 Saffas :)

Yes, it was a very bad act from Ramdin. Not good for the sport of Cricket overall. Many youngsters nowadays lack in their attitude, more than cricket. Viv and Holding have every right to raise their concern, having raised WI to enormous heights in 70s and 80s and not seeing them the same today.

Sammy even managed to bring his natural wit to calm down the controversy, saying Ramdin should bat with more notes in his pockets because Ramdin has had a piece of paper stored in his pocket each time he has scored a hundred, both of which have come against England. In 2009, at Bridgetown, when he scored his maiden Test century, he unfurled another piece of paper, listing three names: (http://www.hq.cricinfo.org/wiveng2009/content/story/393003.html) Ian Bishop, David Williams and Ramnaresh Sarwan. It was his vote of thanks for playing a big role in his performance. "His first hundred, a couple of years ago against England, he had a note. So probably he should bat with more notes in his pocket."

Muttiah Muralitharan wants T20 shake-up in England
Legendary Sri Lanka spin bowler Muttiah Muralitharan has said England's Twenty20 format is lagging behind its worldwide equivalents.

Muralitharan, 40, who is in his second season with Gloucestershire, believes the English game would benefit from adopting the same franchise format used in the Indian Premier League.

"I think they need a big change," he told BBC Points West.

Muralitharan's T20 stats

•International level: Sri Lanka
•Previous clubs: Chennai Super Kings, Chittagong Kings, Gloucestershire, Kandurata, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Lancashire, Royal Challengers, Bangalore, Wellington
•Wickets: 139
•Runs: 2858
"They introduced it worldwide but now England is old-fashioned."

In its current format, 18 county sides - featuring a maximum of two overseas players - are split in to three groups and play 10 games before entering the knock-out stages - formed of the top two in the groups and the two best performing third places.

Since its inception in 2003, the game has been adapted worldwide, taking on several different guises.

The Indian Premier League - the biggest brand of 20 over cricket - is made up eight franchises and attracts cricket's biggest international names, worldwide TV rights packages and sponsorship deals - meaning a huge increase in revenue.

"They need to change and become franchised teams and each county would benefit financially," Muralitharan continued.

"If it happens like that it would be huge in England. I think the market is there, and the TV rights will come.

Other T20 formats
•Australia - Big Bash League
•Bangladesh - Bangladesh Premier League
•England - Friends Life t20
•India - Indian Premier League
•New Zealand - HRV Cup
•Pakistan - Faysal Bank T20 Cup
•South Africa - MiWay T20 Challenge
•Sri Lanka - Sri Lanka Premier League
•West Indies - Caribbean T20
•Zimbabwe - Stanbic Bank 20 Series
"Bangladesh launched it big and their crowds have been 30-40,000 for every match. Australia has merged into eight franchises rather than the teams so I think England should also do that and it could equal IPL."

Muralitharan starts his second spell with Gloucestershire on Thursday against local rivals Somerset, and believes merging the two counties to become a t20 franchise would be a good move.

"That would be good as they are close counties and they would benefit financially," he added.

"At the end of the day the public will see good cricket and enjoy it. Money will be spinning from the competition and they can sustain the other forms of the game within county cricket.

"It would be one of the best things to happen if they do that. It will make sure the competition is more successful than what it is now."

Plum, you have made me carefully read and thoroughly appreciate this Andy Flower.
pinraanpA pinraan: http://www.espncricinfo.com/england-v-west-indies-2012/content/current/story/568213.html

Flower said. "I'm not annoyed. I think it's quite sad. He's very clear about what he wants to do, so that's his choice. :lol2:

"I just thought that after you've retired from sport and you look back at your career he might think: 'Crikey, I wish I'd taken part in more World Cups and helped win the 2015 World Cup with England.' They are great memories and I think it's a little sad he won't get those opportunities anymore.

"Kevin was due to be rested for this one-day series with the West Indies. But I don't think resting him for the Australian one-day series and South African one-day series was an option. These are two of the best cricketing nations in the world and we want to put out strong sides against them."

There is also the status of ODI cricket, not only in this country but over the world, to take into consideration and when making these policy decisions you have to consider the precedents. Ramdin - unnecessary fine. Just let players express, nah? Needless to say, Broad could brandish a note calling Yuvraj a ****, and it would be laughed off as a prank. Basically, in a few years time, player punishment statistics will be paraded to show that England is the Fairplay Trophy winner, too, or second only to New Zealand. nAdhArithanam as usual. Australians dont compete for that particular trophy - about the only trophy that doesnt have them literally stake their life for.

Unselected. You answer with your bat. It is not how you behave on a field.
And I am hearing all kinds of support: he was not using bad weards, so let him be etc. That only goes to show how 'accepting' people have become. It is like people who cut and overtake from the left side of the road, or drive with full blunding high-beam - it is so common now, that people don't even recognize it is wrong. Nobody has taught them it is wrong and they are still exceeding their brief. If you stop and ask they'll be like "what is there?".

Telegraph profiles Seenu maama

At a recent count Srinivasan sat on more than 70 boards, not least the ICC’s executive board – the biggest decision-making board in cricket – as India’s president. How does he find the time? Simple. Everybody comes to him.

When the ICC’s constitution committee had to meet, they went to Chennai. This year’s IPL final was staged in Chennai. Last year’s IPL final was staged in Chennai. The last Champions League final was staged in, of all places, Chennai. Yes, we are talking about the most powerful person in cricket.

edhu eppo..thot it was BCCI who were not keen on int. t-20s

Haroon Lorgat used to own that title. As the ICC’s chief executive, he kept India at bay, emphasised the importance of Test cricket and stopped T20 taking over the world.

can't remember BCCI ever asking for a IPL window :confused2:

Now, into the vacuum created by Lorgat’s departure from the ICC, Srinivasan is about to step. As the president of the Indian board, he will have the most influential voice in selecting the first ICC chairman, after the split between a president who waves the flag and a chairman who makes the decisions.

Should he himself be the first ICC chairman, or someone he can trust, someone who will give the IPL a seven-week window in the international calendar, unlike Lorgat? Then along comes this spot of bother, which might be related to the fact that the ruling party in Tamil Nadu, which Srinivasan has backed for years, is now in opposition.

low blow

It doesn’t end there. A family feud is erupting. Srinivasan, who is 67, has a son, Ashwin, 43, who recently told a Mumbai newspaper that he is gay and claimed that he has been subject to ‘constant mental and physical torture’ by his father.

Ashwin was arrested last month after a late-night bar-room brawl in Mumbai and detained overnight. He alleges this arrest, followed by police harassment, was arranged by his father. He is rumoured to have secrets to reveal that will launder the family’s dirty linen in public…

:lol2:

Bad timing, indeed. In a cold June in England, however, we do need something to divert us from all the rain.

I read that he was stopped by the police, got out of his car and started running. Maybe alcohol was involved, no other explanation why he ended up on the train tracks. Unless like you said it was suicide. I watched him on TV a few times, very good player, would be definitely been in the England squad in a few years time. :(

drunken driving - to escape from cops he ran into a underground train?

1. drunken driving - the maximum they would do is cancel the DL (if he has done any serious damage, that would have been in news already)
2. escaping from the police, he ran into the underground train? (by running into the underground station and jumping infront of the speeding train? is it like, he wanted to commit suicide to escape from cancelling his driving licence? or while he was just running away from cops he accidentally jumped in front of the train?)

It depends on the amount of Alcohol in your blood at the time of breath test is conducted at the scene, Police then take the person to the station to do further test, and if the person is 5 times over the legal limit then you can get up to 2 years in prison!

More on Atherton. When he started playing County Cricket, he was anointed FEC(Future England Captain) even before he played a first class game. Thisd is because of his oxbridge background and the tradition of oxbridge old boys taking care of their network as selectors journalists influential opinion makers etc. The best oxbridge candidtae usually had lots of backing. In Lancashire, where they breed no nonsense straight speaking folks from "lower" class background, Atherton's kit was marked FEC - but with a twist. They changed E to Educated but FC, I'll leave it to your imagination. This is for feeyar - vulgar language is also part of Englis cricket but public school oxbridge cabal still rules so you get to see the Cook Strauss types as captain contenders heavily promot. This is one of the reasons KP was conspired against.

'Losing to New Zealand in the World Cup was the saddest day'

Morne Morkel on sibling rivalry, big-match nerves, the disappointment of defeat, and more

Interview by Sharda Ugra

There's a couple of times. Every time you lose a game for your country, a lot of people, especially back home in SA, see it as just another loss. The sort of stuff that comes in the media is sometimes hard. It saddens me, and the way they make it out like we've just like choked or those sorts of things... We actually go out there and try to give our best in every game. The way sometimes people see it is sad. The World Cup match we lost against New Zealand was a sad day. That was so far probably the saddest day for me.

Wasim bhai on Gilly..talks about Hobart test..still remember certain young Akthar taken in for some special treatment :-D

I think in one-day cricket, as an opener, he was definitely No. 1. He was the most difficult batsman to bowl to because he wasn't a pinch-hitter, he wasn't a slogger. He was a proper batsman and used to play proper shots. I, as a bowler, used to love bowling to pinch-hitters in the first 15 overs because I knew that nine out of ten times I am going to get them out. But Gilchrist was impossible to bowl to. It didn't matter if you are playing in England, Pakistan, Australia, India or wherever - he was equally dangerous.

He was very strong at the cut. I played a lot of cricket against him, and running in with the new ball, I used to think that I am not going to bowl short or wide - but it used to happen. It used to annoy me a lot as a bowler, with all the control, all the experience, I would still bowl a short ball outside the off stump. That is pressure. That's what pressure does to you as a bowler when you are under pressure bowling to a particular batsman.

Why was he so dangerous? He used to play the cut very well on the front foot. He used to drive on the up. If you bowl slightly short just to put him on the back foot, he used to play the pull shot from there, and then if you compensated a bit on your length as a bowler to pitch it up a bit more, he used to hit you straight over the head on a regular basis.

I remember one innings clearly - the Test match in Hobart in 1999, where they needed 387 or 400 to win… they were 120 for 5, and out came Gilchrist and he got 150. I think Justin Langer also got a hundred as well. Saqlain [Mushtaq] got five wickets in the first innings - he got everyone - but in the second innings every time he bowled a doosra, Gilchrist slog-swept him. I was the captain, and I thought there was a chance we were going to get him, but we never got him.

Every one-dayer I played against - I think he was the most dangerous batsman to bowl at. I was a bit wary - not scared, not worried, but I was always wary with the new ball because you can't control the new ball as much as the reverse-swinging ball.

But that hundred he got in Hobart - the reverse swing was there, but he played it brilliantly. He was, in my book, the most difficult batsman to bowl at in one-day cricket because he could hit you all over the park on a regular basis.

At Hobart I used everything: I used the crease, the ball was so old on one side because it was a dead wicket, it was shiny on the other side, rough one side, but it wasn't swinging. They were playing so well, and this happened probably the only time with me and Waqar. Although it was 1999, we weren't quick, but we were swinging the ball both ways. But he was just phenomenal.

Every time I bowled inswing - went wide of the crease bowled inswing with the angle, - he hit me through extra cover every time. He got 150-odd, so he must have hit me for seven-eight boundaries through extra cover. Then I went close to the wicket, outswing with the reverse swing. Again, he hit me on the up for four through extra cover; inswinging yorker and four again. You couldn't bowl a bouncer because it was very slow. And that doesn't matter to Gilchrist [anyway] because the bouncer was his strength. He was one of the few batsmen I know who used to love to play against the short-pitched deliveries.

Comparing Gilchrist with Jayasuriya, the difference was that Sanath was a back-foot player and Gilchrist was a front-foot player. I always thought I had a chance against Sanath.

I got Gilchirst out quite a few times in one-day cricket - I remember a beauty I bowled him with. I think it was 2000-01, we played two games in July, in winter in Australia, in the indoor stadium. It was a drop-in wicket, it was a bouncy track and it was seaming as well. The first game they won easily. In the second game I got him off the first ball. He opened, I was bowling the first over, and it was freezing, and I made sure that at the age of 36 I warmed up properly because if you are not warmed up in the cold weather and Gilchrist is batting, then he will punish you. So I bowled him a perfect delivery and what I aimed for did happen. I aimed middle and leg, going away, and it happed exactly. I bowled that delivery and Gilchrist just edged it. While walking back, he said to me, "It was too good for me mate," and I said to him, "About time, Gilly."

He was incredible, and a very nice human being off the field.

South Africa play more tour matches than Tests, with four in their schedule, and Kirsten said he is still undecided on whether they are beneficial or not but admitted it relies on individual preference. "I actually preferred no warm up games and to go straight into the Test matches," he said. Start meesic - http://www.espncricinfo.com/india/content/current/story/570934.html

ESPNcricinfo knows of at least seven Indian players who have been refused permission to play in Twenty20 leagues or events in other countries over the past few years. These include big-ticket names, India regulars, first-class stalwarts, fringe players, Twenty20 specialists, players centrally contracted to the BCCI and those that aren't. They can't be named for fear of being censured - either directly or subtly - by the board.

The BCCI is not merely trying to keep its contracted players free from injury due to too much Twenty20. The memories of the injury-ridden 2011 tour of England are still fresh. All it is doing is protecting turf by ensuring that no Indian plays Twenty20 anywhere else.

Boucher had to leave the field at the end of the 46th over when a googly from Imran Tahir hit the stumps and a dislodged bail struck Boucher in the left eye. Photographs showed Boucher bleeding from the eye as he left the field.

He will undergo surgery on Monday night to determine the seriousness of the injury - which was diagnosed as laceration of the sclera, the white part of the eye - but it looms as a potential career-ender as Boucher said the tour of England would be his last.

Jonathan Trott is British. It says so on his passport and he long ago passed the ECB’s cricket immigration test*. In an interview with George Dobell this week, he revealed that when he goes to South Africa, he doesn’t enjoy it much and usually flies back early. Booking a holiday, and then moaning about it from the time you arrive until the time you catch an early flight home: what could be more British than that?

I’ll be honest, as willow wavers go, he’s not one of my favourites. I respect his work, in much the same way that I might admire a really solid bit of bricklaying. You can appreciate an impressive accumulation of identically coloured rectangular bricks, one on top of the other in orthodox fashion, and you can nod approvingly at the impeccably neat mortar work, but you aren’t going to plan a day trip to see it.

He’s very good at what he does, though. Test match cricket rewards obduracy and HMS Trott is perhaps the modern game’s most successful anchor dropper. And anyone who voluntarily leaves the climate of South Africa to dwell in the land that dry forgot deserves some kind of credit. Yet, he still feels as though he has to justify his presence on these shores.

“Let me tell you, when the sun shines, there is no better country in the world than England.”

Fortunately George stopped him before he got on to Elgar, muffins or red telephone boxes. And I’ll have to take his word for it on the sunshine, I can’t really remember to be honest. The two permanent puddles outside my house (I’ve called them Dave and George) will soon be forming a small pond together, the buses are full of slugs travelling between vegetable gardens, and shoals of piranhas are window-shopping on Oxford Street.

That he has such an idyllic view of England sounds all the more remarkable when you learn that he lives in Birmingham. The second city doesn’t have a great reputation: it’s dull, it’s not much fun to look at and the accent is hard to take. But look a little more closely and you’ll see that it’s built around some substantial looking Victorian architecture that is impressive in its restrained classicism. You could say it’s the Jonathan Trott of English cities.

SL's had a rough time after Murali's retirement especially in tests. Their performance has slightly been off radar from the time Dilshan took over captaincy. But guess SLCB did the right thing by giving back the captaincy to Mahela last year, who according to me has done a fine job at the helm. Moreover the team's performance in Australia was nothing short of brilliant. The likes of Chandimal, Angelo Mathews have all come to the fore.

England given Test ranking boost
ESPNcricinfo staff
July 14, 2012

England's gap at the top of the ICC Test rankings has increased after the annual update of the table, but they can still be overhauled if South Africa win the series that starts on July 19.

Following the refresh to the table, which sees results before 2009 wiped off to give more emphasis on recent form, South Africa have slipped to third behind Australia - that is partly due to a lack of recent Test action for them. However, any margin of victory against England over the three Tests will see them reach top spot.

For England any victory will also see them hold onto the No. 1 position they attained last year by whitewashing India, but they can also maintain their ranking with a drawn series. England are currently in 122 points with South Africa on 113.

South Africa, though, are unperturbed by their shift. "It was the only way we were looking at it, that we have to win the series to go No.1," Russell Domingo, the assistant coach, said. "So it doesn't make a difference to us where we are ranked now."

Australia are currently sandwiched between the two teams, following their successful run in Test cricket under Michael Clarke. Since he took on the captaincy from Ricky Ponting they have beaten Sri Lanka away, drawn in South Africa, drawn at home to New Zealand, whitewashed India and beaten West Indies in the Caribbean.

South Africa's fall to third is because, annually, the oldest results are no longer counted - in this case from 2008-09 - and it was in that period that they won both in England and in Australia. At the same time England's ranking has improved because that home defeat to South Africa and the away defeats in India and West Indies are no longer counted in the rankings calculations. Ada da enna oru system

Elsewhere, India and Pakistan have changed places. Pakistan, despite a 1-0 defeat in the three-Test series that finished in Sri Lanka on Thursday, have moved up to fourth and MS Dhoni's side, No. 1 this time last year, are now down in fifth place.

'It doesn't need to be pretty' - Steyn
Firdose Moonda
July 13, 2012

Dale Steyn limbers up in the nets at Canterbury ahead of the first Test © Getty Images

Players/Officials: Dale Steyn
Series/Tournaments: South Africa tour of England
Teams: England | South Africa
Grounds: Kennington Oval
Dale Steyn has admitted to a win-at-all-costs attitude on the tour of England, knowing that victory will end years of being second-best and give South Africa the No. 1 Test ranking.

South Africa have been top of the ICC Test rankings only briefly in the past, for four months back in 2008, but have hovered close by since then. With an unbeaten record away from home since 2006, Steyn believes it is time for the team to stamp their authority.

"We don't care how the series goes, as long as we win," Steyn said in Canterbury, where South Africa are facing Kent in their final warm-up before the first Test at The Oval. "It doesn't need to be pretty, it doesn't need to be beautiful with guys scoring hundreds and guys taking five-fors. We just want to get the job done."

The contest between the two bowling attacks has been the most anticipated match-up of the series and while he would not draw a comparison, Steyn called South Africa's current pack "fantastic."

Graeme Smith, the Test captain, has also hailed the unit as one of the best he has worked with and attributed consistency in selection to their fine performances of late. "We've got experience and the guys know how to bowl in different conditions," Steyn said. "It's also been the same group of guys for quite a while and there's a lot of trust between us."

Although Steyn is often referred to as the kingpin of the attack, he denied that there is any hierarchy among the bowlers in contrast to England where Jimmy Anderson is widely perceived to be the guiding force in the group. He expresses the belief that the likes of Morne Morkel, Lopsy Tsotsobe, Vernon Philander and the leg spinner Imran Tahir share equal responsibility.

"There's nobody that leads the attack. If you are looking for a leader, you're always looking for the guys that have been around the longest but when it comes to bowling, any of us are capable of doing the job," Steyn said. "It's not like we are looking at a leader to stand up and take five wickets for us on the day. Whether its Morne or Lopsy or Imran, all of them are capable of bowling teams out by themselves."

Despite that confidence in his team mates, Steyn remains the go-to man when Smith needs wickets because of his superior speed.

"There are times when my team needs me to bowl really fast and make something happen. You need those types of players who can break an end open for you," Steyn said. "That's something that I've got in my arsenal that Graeme treasures. When we need a wicket, he tends to throw the ball to me because I can make it happen with pace."

It showed in the tour match against Kent, when Smith brought Steyn on to break an opening stand which had grown to 81. Steyn had an appeal in his first over and got a wicket in his second. But Steyn knows that with that expectation there is responsibility as well. "I also need to be bowling in the right areas. You can't bowl at 150 and be bowling it all over the show, that's not going to help." Even though wicket-taking is always on his mind, Steyn said he has no preference for which scalps he picks up and has not identified any of the England batsman specifically as a prized scalp.

"I've seen South Africa on previous tours where I haven't played for them in Australia and Glenn McGrath and Mike Hussey put on 150-run partnership and the value of that tenth wicket means a lot more than the ninth one," he said. "It just shows you that you can't put too much emphasis on one particular person, you have to worry about everything."

He also does not mind if the spoils are shared as long as the team benefits. "Even if I only take one wicket in the whole series, as long as we win, I will still be on the balcony with a big smile on my face and I will be stoked," he said.

This South African squad sound a focused bunch with common purpose. But, Steyn said, they also have a bigger picture in mind. Mark Boucher's serious eye injury which forced him to retire on Tuesday still hangs heavily on everyone.

"Everyone is going on and on about being the No. 1 Test side in the world but when one of my friends possibly loses an eye and his whole life is about to change that means so much more to me than any cricket game that I will ever play," he said. "Having said that, I am here to play cricket so I have to focus on that. Reality struck down hard when that happened and it just put things into perspective."

The team have not specifically adopted a "do it for Mark" strategy, according to Steyn, but will try to pay tribute to the veteran wicket-keeper in the best way they can. "We wanted to win this series before the incident. However, it does add a little extra inspiration or motivation because Mark would have wanted to stand on that podium."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5Q0BcPXwCg&feature=g-all-c

I am not posting this video for the knock but for some of the interesting comments below!!!.

Why does Ian Chappell hate Steve Waugh so much?

penchod101 1 year ago

He never liked Waugh becoming a defensive player after 1992, plus as I said below he really hated Steve Waugh once Waugh's captaincy was starting to be talked about as being better than Chappelli's.
robelinda2 in reply to penchod101 1 year ago

Also, two other players who hated S.Waugh were Warney and Michael Slater. Slats, because Waugh dropped him from the 5th test of the 2001 Ashes and he never got back into the side after Langer (his replacement) made a century in that match. Warne still never got over the fact that he was dropped from the side in the 4th test in the 1999 WI series and he lost the VC the following year. I'd like to see someone like Ponting make a tough decision like that.....never in a million years.
a2b4c6d8 in reply to robelinda2 1 year ago

Tell me about it, Ponting has no guts, Waugh was amazingly tough for dropping warnie for that 4th test, and too bloody right he shouldve- Warnie was awful in the previous 3 tests, bowled pies. Slater was out of control in 2001, deserved to be dropped. But Langer says quite openly now that even he was in a bad frame of mind for most of that tour having been dropped before the first test after Martyn had made heaps of runs in the tour matches.

Captain obvious Akashwani when was Malinga ever been effective against subcontinental players with lower grip:twisted: also after retiring from tests he rarely bowls those in between lengths now more of a two trick pony.

Brett lee said the same a year before on using 2 new balls.

wizzy
9th August 2012, 01:53 PM
check out Malinga stats against subcontinental sides..the rot started long before the 2 new ball rule..Lee was still effective with the new rule..now abrasive surfaces are a rarity so reverse swing is less of a factor..spinners are the ones to be feel hard done by the new rule since they are mostly been reduced to containment.

ajithfederer
9th August 2012, 02:05 PM
Leaving Malinga stats out wizzy, Its no wonder Kohli's/Amlas have been raking runs after this degenerative rules in cricket. From red ball to whites and pink(s) in future??. Stats have become meaningless.

wizzy
9th August 2012, 02:18 PM
two new ball is quite handful on helpful conditions as OZ found out in Eng odies..I wouldn't club Kohls with Amla or even ABdv..Amla/ABdv have proved their worth in tests..concur on Kohls being talked up to being ODI ATG already he hasn't even gone past the second season blues which has reduced many ATGs to mere mortals.

When you are going through a good patch, you tend to ignore certain things. It could be your sleeping habits, it could be waking up at 6AM and going for a jog, it could be a gym session. You think you know you have to do all these things. But when you come out of the team, when you get injured, you are not doing that well and you realise that these are things I am missing

I played Ranji Trophy games but did not get too many wickets. I lead Punjab well in the shorter formats. But that was not just enough

"I have lost the lens, iris and pupil in my left eye. There was severe damage to my retina. I have had two major operations and four blood draining operations in the past three weeks and physically, at times, I have been in a lot of pain," Mark Boucher said at his first press conference since the incident, at Newlands.

"It does get uncomfortable at times and being a sportsman, I want to be active and outdoors but, without a pupil, I find any amount of sunlight very harsh and have thus been restricted to the confines of my home. It is unlikely that I will play any professional cricket again in the near future, which is very unfortunate as I was looking forward to contributing as a player for the Cobras. The risk of additional damage to my left eye or even damage to the other eye, doesn't warrant it."

"I don't want people to feel sorry for me. Injuries happen and this could have happened earlier on in my career. I am incredibly grateful for the length of career that I have had and the amazing things I have experienced and people I have met during that time. This is just another challenge in my life and something that I will be working to overcome."

Cricket can be quite morbid at times and nothing like a competitive player ending his career abruptly due to an injury.

I plead guilty, Your Honour!

Asad Rauf is at the receiving end of a complaint filed by a Mumbai-based fashion model that the popular Pakistan umpire lured her with marriage in order to gain sexual favours.

Model Leena Kapoor has filed the complaint with the office of the DCP, Zone IX, mentioning that she met the former First Class cricketer through a mutual friend in Sri Lanka six months ago and exchanged numbers. They also stayed together in the country for three days.

Rauf, 56, a member of ICC’s Elite Umpire Panel, would meet up with Leena whenever cricketing assignments brought him to India.

As the bond between the two grew stronger, Leena alleges that Rauf committed himself to marrying her and getting her a new flat. He also purportedly told her that he was married with two children, but that his religion allowed him to have more than one wife.

“I asked him several times about the marriage and he would always tell me that it would happen soon,” Leena told an Indian daily.

According to the duped woman, Rauf, a few days ago, called her up saying he didn’t know her and didn’t want any further interactions with her.

Officials at the DCP’s office acknowledge the receipt of the complaint letter and have said an inquiry would be conducted soon.
