Rob Steen - What if spinners were allowed to flex their arms 20 degrees while bowling?]Should we give the doosra a little leeway (http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/550715.html)
So it all boils down, in essence, to the Googly Question: would you prefer the game to remain rigid and obstinate, clinging fast to traditional notions of what is far and unfair, and hence stagnate, or encourage the expansion of horizons? In other words, would we be better off with or without the doosra? You don't have to be a fully qualified Luddite to reply in the negative, but it helps.

Murali is the highest wicket-taker in Test cricket and in one-day internationals Gloucestershire have confirmed that Muttiah Muralitharan will be returning for this year's Twenty20 campaign.
The 39-year-old Sri Lanka spin bowling legend, who joined the county on a two-season contract last year, played in all their 15 FL t20 games, finishing joint top wicket-taker with 12.
"He did a lot for us last year," director of cricket Tom Richardson told BBC Gloucestershire.
"He's not played over the winter. We hope that works well for us," he added.
"What really impressed me last year is that he's got time for everybody. He always gets huge applause and is one of the legends of the game.
"He lifts everybody in the dressing room. The youngsters can learn so much from him, as can everybody.
"He gave a lot, both on and off the field and is a delightful bloke so we're really looking forward to him coming back."
Muralitharan, who has taken a record 800 Test match wickets, said: "I thoroughly enjoyed my first FL t20 season with Gloucestershire and I am looking forward to returning."

South Africa beats NZ in the T20 match played at Eden Park today, it was a stunner.
Kiwis required just 6 runs in the last over with 5 wickets in hand. De Lange bowled the last over gave just 3 runs [ Including one front foot no ball and so a free hit ] and took 2 wickets, incredible.
South Africa move up to 2nd in the Twenty20 rankings while New Zealand drop to fourth
19.6
de Lange to Southee, no run, de Lange holds his nerve, fires it in outside off and Southee misses with the swing to leg, AB collects and runs up to the stumps to prevent any runs and South Africa have pulled off an absolute stunner at Eden Park
All of a sudden it's a free hit, 4 off 1, 3 to tie but that's unlikely given this ground's dimensions, but the batsmen can keep running even if the fielder takes a catch
19.6
de Lange to Franklin, (no ball) 1 run, would you believe it? he's bowled a front-foot no-ball, it was full outside off and Franklin hit it along the ground to long-off, the South Africans begin celebrating only to look up in horror at the standing umpire, they managed to take a couple as well
Franklin on strike, he needs to hit a six to win the game, a four won't be enough to tie it up
19.5
de Lange to Bracewell, OUT, South Africa should win this now as Bracewell goes for an almighty slog to leg as the ball is full on off, skied high in the air and settles in the hands of Amla at point and he ends up diving forward to take it
DAJ Bracewell c Amla b de Lange 0 (2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00
19.4
de Lange to Bracewell, no run, bangs in a bouncer on middle, risky considering if it hits bat it's probably flying away, but in the end it pays off as Bracewell can't connect with a big swing
19.3
de Lange to NL McCullum, OUT, now they are in full-blown panic mode, moved across way outside off and tried to paddle pull, got a glove on it and it skied up to AB behind the stumps, are the home team going to do what their opposition is usually accused of doing?
NL McCullum c †de Villiers b de Lange 0 (2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00
19.2
de Lange to NL McCullum, no run, short and wide outside off, beats the cut and he is shocked that the umpire hasn't called wide, New Zealand all of a sudden struggling
Nathan McCullum to face his first ball
19.1
de Lange to Franklin, 1 run, Franklin drills a full ball outside off on the bounce to long-off
de Lange to bowl the final over, this is a gamble as de Villiers goes with pace

was expecting Gul/Malinga to speak out..anyways Binga  would have added a bit more credence had he said this during CB series :-)
"I'm not a massive fan of it to tell the truth," the 35-year-old Lee said.
"The only thing the bowler could enjoy with it would be if you're bowling at the Gabba and it's a juicy green-top and you could nick 'em off for 80-odd if it's swinging and bouncing from both ends.
"It's totally changed the way one-day cricket's played now.
"Yes, there'll be a few times when you can get the ball to reverse-swing at less than 25 overs old but it's taken a key weapon out of the game. That's not enjoyable."
Lee says the game should go back to just using the same ball at both ends throughout the innings, even avoiding the measure where a mandatory change of ball is made after 34 overs.
"If I had my way, we'd go back to the old rules," he said.
"We are playing on wickets these days that aren't really conducive to bowling fast and you need everything you can as a fast bowler to try and take wickets."

England boil over as Sri Lankan Perera refuses to walk in Colombo (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/cricket/article-2116290/England-boil-defeating-Sri-Lankan-Board-XI.html)
http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/02170/swann_2170338a.jpg
http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/02170/anderson_2170318b.jpg
England opened their tour with a convincing victory by an innings and 15 runs against a Sri Lankan Board XI at the Premadasa Stadium.
However, the match was overshadowed by an ugly incident in Saturday's afternoon session which saw captain Andrew Strauss and several of his players involved in a heated row with both umpires and opposition batsman Dilruwan Perera.
It followed a passage of play which had seen Perera edge a James Anderson delivery to first slip.
To the naked eye, the catch looked good as Strauss dived forward to scoop the ball up into his hands.
Yet Perera, a 29-year-old off-spinner who has played four one-day internationals, insisted the ball had not carried and, after consultation between Sri Lankan umpires Ravindra Kottahachchi and Ravindra Wimalasiri, he was reprieved.
It led to an unsavoury confrontation involving England's players, led by Strauss, Perera and both umpires, which threatened to boil over. Anderson later admitted a valuable lesson has been learned about cricket in the subcontinent, where suffocating humidity and slow wickets can often see tempers rise in direct correlation with the temperature.
'It was just frustrating,' he said. 'With Straussy being the honest upstanding citizen that he is, he wouldn't lie about something like that. You have to take his word on it and the other slip and keeper thought he'd taken it, too.
'Add the heat into it and it was a good lesson for us. Situations like that are going to be hard to deal with in the Test matches and we have to deal with them well.
'You're working very hard to take wickets, and seamers aren't going to bowl a huge amount of overs in a spell, so when you get someone out, it is frustrating to have it taken away.
'We could have handled it better but I'm sure it's something we'll talk about.'
The argument, which took place with their opponents in a hopeless position on 63-7, shows how seriously England are taking these warm-up games before their two-Test series against Sri Lanka, which starts in Galle on Monday week.
It is also evidence of the burning desire among England's players to set the record straight following their humiliating 3-0 Test series whitewash against Pakistan in the UAE.
There were numerous positives to take from the Colombo game.
The runs of Alastair Cook, whose unbeaten 163 allowed England to declare on 303-8 overnight, and wickets yesterday for a previously out-of-sorts Graeme Swann were two, while Anderson finished with match figures of 7-40 as the Sri Lankan Board XI were bowled out for just 119 in 56.4 strength-sapping overs.

Any illusions England may have had over the enormity of their task in Sri Lanka were dispelled as Chamara Silva thumped a century on the first day of the warm-up match against a Development XI in Colombo.
Silva, who has played 11 Tests and 75 ODIs, forced England to toil throughout an unremitting day of heat and humidity, making 163 as the Development XI reached the close on 376 for 5 from 90 overs. England's bowlers, lacking the rested James Anderson and Monty Panesar, conceded four an over throughout the day and could find little encouragement in the pitch or the overhead conditions. So hot were the conditions that Matt Prior kept wicket without pads for long periods.
There was some positive news for England. Stuart Broad, who missed the first warm-up match with a sprained ankle, was declared fit to play and claimed two wickets in his first spell and one more shortly before the close although did say following the day's play that he felt some soreness after 15 overs.
Former Test batsman Malinda Warnapura fell to the fourth ball of the match, driving to mid-off, before Dilshan Munaweera was bowled in Broad's fifth over. Later he trapped Kushal Perera with the first delivery with the second new ball.
There was little further joy for England. Graeme Swann, Steven Finn and Samit Patel all conceded more than four an over as Silva, whose career high came when he made an unbeaten 152 against New Zealand in 2006 but has not played Test cricket since 2008, stuck 25 fours and a six. He added 151 for the third-wicket with Thilina Kandamby (64) and 93 for the fourth with Angelo Perera (61 not out).
England's spinners - Swann and Patel - endured a particularly tough day. The pair claimed just one wicket between them while conceding 185 in 39 overs, with Swann going wicketless while conceding over 100 in his 21 overs. Patel did, at least, enjoy one bright moment when he turned one out of the rough to bowl Kandamby, but Swann was taken for 25 in his first three overs while, later in the day, Perera hit him for two sixes.
Alastair Cook, who made a century in the first warm-up match, was also rested ahead of the first Test that begins in Galle on Monday, providing an opportunity for Patel and Ravi Bopara to stake their claims for the No. 6 spot.

Bearding Lanka in their den  - its simple: what is the least expected outcome before the series is happening. 4-0 was never talked of before india's 2 recent tours. 3-0 was in nobdy's mind before England's uae tour. Likewise, is it too early to talk about 2-0 for England here? Or 1_1 even. This is what I call it as common sense in batting! which most of the best batsmen forget to do when the team badly needed! When your team members struggle against and when you believe in you, you tend to face lot of balls and use the time efficiently!
There are numerous good batsmen in Test arena. But very few stands tall in such scenarios! Such should be called as historical/epic.

289/8 - Team score! Mahela Jayawardene contribution : 168 runs! Close to 49 overs he faced against the ENG bowling attack and he was able to make runs on the board! :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
This is what I call it as common sense in batting! which most of the best batsmen forget to do when the team badly needed! When your team members struggle against and when you believe in you, you tend to face lot of balls and use the time efficiently!
There are numerous good batsmen in Test arena. But very few stands tall in such scenarios! Such should be called as historical/epic.
Can Jayawardanae stands tall every day ??? Ippdi velanda thaan common sense irukka appo avaruku South Africa tour la common sense illaya

MJ would have played very defensive when SL lost 2 wickets in its first 3 overs and ended with just completing hundred. But he made fruitful of 168 runs while the second top runner from 9 players scored only 27. Such was the dominance of MJ I am praising here. From team perspective, this total will sure help!

Herath to Strauss, OUT, Sri Lanka are reviewing this. This is very close. Strauss is sweeping this really full delivery, and misses it. This has hit him on the half-volley, so no scope for much turn. It all depends on where the ball has hit him with respect to the line of off stump. Strauss has moved well across here, but Asad Rauf has given this not out. After a discussion, Jayawardene makes the T sign. And rightly so. This is full, pitched around off, turning in towards middle, Strauss is beaten on the sweep, and off he goes. Strauss doesn't seem happy. One of the reasons could be the time taken by Jayawardene before reviewing this. It did seem longish, but it is the umpire's discretion to allow or disallow a review

C Welegedara to Pietersen, OUT! Pietersen drags it onto his stumps! Good length delivery outside off from round the wicket, nips back in after landing. Pietersen goes for a drive but gets an inside edge onto the stumps. Welegedara strikes immediately after lunch! England in some trouble now!
Herath to Prior, OUT! LBW! Good length delivery on middle, turns away after landing. Prior gets squared up in his defense and is hit on the back leg. The players appeal and the umpire lifts his finger after a long wait. England ask for a review but the replays show that it would have hit middle and off. The onfield decision stays and Prior has to depart. England reeling at 72/5.

6.2 Oh we have been expecting you, Mr Swann. Once again he strikes in the first over of a new spell. And a classical dismissal too. Tossed up generously, pitches middle and leg, Thirimanne is looking leg side, closing the face, but the ball dips, and then turns away to beat the bat and take the off stump 8/2
8.1 Swann strikes again. And it's the big man MJ. Excellent bowling. Goes straght on after pitching on a length outside off. Jayawardene is expecting an offbreak that he can defend towards the vacant silly point region. This one doesn't turn, though, and takes the edge to first slip. England are right back into this one. I am loving this Test 14/3
18.6 got him! Swann strikes again and removes another left-hander. And it's an absolute beauty, producing an edge to gully. Classic off break bowling, drift in, forcing Sangakkara forward but he wasn't completely to the pitch, played a not great prod and edged to Bell who bagged a sharp chance to put England right back in the match 41/4
30.1 stumped! And England do strike before the close, as Samaraweera walks past one outside off stump and falls just before the close. It was a slider from Swann past the outside edge, Samaraweera was in a dreadful position, was done on the outside edge and stumped by a distance by a gleeful Matt Prior 72/5
