Best Director 2009

Kabir Khan surprised many including himself when he was nominated for New York

Anurag Kashyap - who played the filum institute un Luck by Chance this year - took Hindi cinema by storm with his biggest mainstream success till date: Dev D which was noted for turning a known tale on its head and infusing it with an undeniably impressive style.

Rajkumar Hirani the director of the montrous (hit) '3 idiots' is also in contention for the award

Vishal Bharadwaj packed in a heady screenplay, racy drama, filmy cliches, zany humour - including giving silly puns and wordplay their rightful due and eliciting impressive performances from his actors in Kaminey.[/list]

Category: Best Hindi Actor

Gone are the days when Bollywood Heroes were just chocolate boys and angry young men. Ably supported by the new age directors, all mainstream actors could get varied roles to prove their mettle. Though 2009 has been not up to the mark for Bollywood, good lead performances are quite handful to get into the polls.

The nominees are,

Aamir Khan (3 Idiots) - Playing a college student, who wants to do things on his own terms, Aamir excelled in his role of Rancho, getting accolades all over and was instrumental in the huge success of 3I.

Abhay Deol (Dev D) - Playing essentially a beaten to death character who lost his love, Abhay Deol added a whole new meaning to the term "Unconventional Hero"

Hrithik Roshan (Luck By Chance) - In an extended cameo, Hrithik managed to bring a lot of dimensions and made the character memorable.

John Abraham (New York) - Surprised everyone with his forceful performance as a terrorist, John Abraham made his mark as a fine actor.

Madhavan (13B, 3 Idiots) - Madhavan was incredible as a family guy living in a haunted house expressing helplessness and anger with absolute ease. He was a part of 3 Idiots too, doing his job perfectly.

Shahid Kapoor (Kaminey) - Shahid was awefome in his dual roles, a stutterer and a gangster with lisp and proved he has come a long way from his Taal days.

Now who is going to win the award..

Best Hindi Film 2009

Raju Hirani's first non-Munnabhai film, 3 Idiots managed to be the talk of the town for with its box office success and credit-sharing agreement row with notorious blocker Chetan Bhagat.

Anurag Kashyap's Dev D and Gulaal won popular and critical acclaim - a first for the avant-garde (whatever that means, I have always wanted to use it in a sentence) filmmaker.

Vishal Bharadhwaj blew-the-socks off yet again with Kaminey - which impressed in writing, performances and pretty much all that maketh a movie.

Zoya Akthar's debut Luck by Chance had a string of impressive performances and Imtiaz Ali continued to impress with Love Aaj Kal

Wanted had Salman, Wake Up Sid had Iktara and New York was shown on TV last weekend.

Its final curtains time for Hub Awards 2010 as we reach the end of the presentation. :)

Let us first see the no-getters: Gulaal, Luck By Chance & New York neither had the luck no the chance and collapsed with zero votes.
Love Aaj Kal & Wake Up Sid stirred the Hubbers slightly with 4% votes each. 3 Idiots received 3 times the votes at 9%.

The final contest is among Dev D, Kaminey and Wanted! Now, which is the film you want to win?

Dev D in 1st place with 38% and Kaminey 28% and Wanted managed to got 14%

:2thumbsup:

Dev (Abhay Deol) is the son of a rich industrialist. He is packed off to London by his strict father who senses his growing fondness with Paro (Mahi), a girl from a less affluent family than theirs. When Dev comes back from London now as a grown up youth, his love for his childhood sweetheart is in fact much multiplied. But he is not allowed to marry her because of differences in cast and status. While Dev is sent to Delhi, Paro is married off to a rich but aged widower who has kids. Not one to take on responsibilities for his acts Dev digs deep into drugs and alcohol for salvation. He stays away from home but his finances still come from a doting father.

An escapist instinct and a massive ego leads him into an aimless search for lost love that pushes him further into an abyss of darkness and hopelessness soaked in self pity. During these times he meets a prostitute Chanda (Kalki). What follows next in Dev’s journey towards self destruction forms the rest of the plot!

Aiming it to be a modern day version of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s classic novel Devdas Anurag Kashyap’s Dev D has ended up being not everyone’s cup of entertainment. With many things more appalling than appealing, Dev D may evoke irritation and bad reaction from fans of the earlier versions and the novel. Though Kashyap gets it right by making his three principal characters (of Dev, Paro and Chanda) stronger and belonging to today’s generation, the overuse of abusive language, drugs, alcohol and sex makes him somewhere lose the point he is trying to convey. It goes onto become much darker than it should have been. Kashyap has tried to play around with his narrative style by incorporating 18 songs (some very short). But some coming one after another in succession make you really bored. He drops certain subtle laugh out moments visually and through the dialogue but they are not sufficient to keep engaged. Also, the over two and a half hour running time feels far too long than it actually should. The abrupt end may leave many perplexed.

The film somehow is salvaged to a large extent by the two leading ladies Mahi Gill and Kalki. Mahi not only looks gorgeous but is an extremely natural bringing out her rawness of her character amazingly well. Kalki is a find. She brilliantly brings out the duality of her character – her childlike innocence and her no regrets attitude about the way she lives her life. Dibyendu Bhattacharya as Chunni the brash and loud pimp succeeds is bringing out a few laughs.

Amit Trivedi’s music is good at places with Emotional Atyaachaar being already a hit. Amongst the many songs, the rock version of Emotional Atyaachaar has been superbly picturised. The camerawork by Rajiv Ravi is absolutely top class, especially when it captures the neon lit by lanes of Delhi’s Paharganj. The sound design too is good.

All in all, Dev D is one big emotional attyaachaar for all those seeking those two hours of entertainment. Those expecting lovey dovey moments please stay away. This one is only for those who wanna experience something really crazy.
