Babycorn -cauliflower pepper curry:
5 baby corns cut
1/4 of a big cauliflower- cut into smmall florets

a handful of peas
1 big onion- chopped fine
2 medium tomatoes- chopped
3 gar & 1'' gin- crushed
1 ' pattai & 1 clove, jeera
1/4 tsp garam masala
2 tsp cori pwd
turmeric, chilly pwd & pepper pwd, salt
Boil the vegs in salted water until 3/4th done
Heat a tbsp oil. Add in the pattai & clove, 1/4 tsp jeera. once flavourful, add in the onions, lil salt & saute on low-med flamme until nice & brown. It'll take around 8-10 mins.
Add in gin-gar paste & saute for further 3 mins until fragrant & the onions turn real brown.
Add in the powders(tur, chilly & cori). saute on low flamme.
Add the tommatoes, few curry leaves. cover & cook till tomamto becomes mushy. takes 4-5 mins.
mash it well with the back of a spoon. Add in the pepper pwd & garam mmasala. Mix well.
Add in the vegs & 1/4 cup water, salt if req.
Cover & cook on low flame for further 3-4 mins.
Garnish with coriander leaves. Serve with rotis.
Note: I've added carrot-peas for color. U can omit it if u want to.
Babycorn-capsicum commbi also tastes good. Capsicum can be added. If using, add it to the gravy along with the veg(baby corn). No need to pre-cook capsicum.

Kandippa tamby, I have learned a lot from your discussion.
My only weakness is coffee and sweets as Dev said.
I fast so many days, tuesday, thursday, friday and saturday.
In between, ammavasai, pournammi, sasti, prodosham and things.
All these days only mid day meal, night 1 fruit, 1 glass low fat milk.
Most of the days there will be visitors to the house.
I have to make dessert as one item.
If its not a fasting day, my diet finish.
These are hurdels to my dieting.
Anyway I am going on. When I see Dev and Madhu writing
their diet menu for the day, I feel guilty and feel strong
to go along with them.
Thanks Dev and Madhu for the inspiration.
Keep writing tamby, your tips are very useful.
Thanks. Kugan98

2 much coffee is bad for you, It will dehydrate you, increase your blood pressure and it will not make u sleep well.
Even I like sweets, but my favourite food items has to be extremely hot :P ..
Most sweets will not convert food into energy like hot food (chillier) ... quickly hence the chance of storing the energy is fat.
Drink warm water frequently... water should be consumed at body temperature level for effective digestion. I.e. 37 degrees Celsius

Corn salad/chaat:
Mix together steamed sweet corn kernels, raw onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, coriander leaves(chop these 4 fine), shredded carrots, lemmon juice, everest pani puri masala, pepper powder. Serve.

K, try the banana popsicle... it's so easy & looks so tempting... I'm posting the recipe here for easy reference... Thanks Anudivya for this easy recipe...
Banana Popsicles dipped in Chocolate and Nuts
Ingredients:
Bananas - 5 large
Dark/Semi-sweet chocolate - 1 cup
Fatfree Half and Half milk- 2 tbsp
Chopped Nuts (Almonds/Peanuts/Walnuts/Pistachios) - As needed
Hardware:
Skewers or Ice-cream sticks - 10 (break off sharp tip if using skewers)
Tray
Wax paper
Method:
Cut bananas in half, insert an ice-cream stick into each one. Lay it on a tray lined with wax paper and freeze for about 4-5 hours. I freeze them overnight. They need to be really cold and frozen before the next step.
Melt chocolate and milk over a double boiler, the top bowl should not touch the water below.
Keep stirring the chocolate till it becomes silky smooth.
Take the bananas right when you are going to make the dipping, not before that.
Dip or spread the chocolate onto the bananas and immediately sprinkle or roll in chopped nuts.
Lay it flat on a wax paper on a tray and freeze again for 3 hours or till the chocolate has hardened.
To store, you may store it in freezer bags once they are completely frozen.
Makes a great snack for kids and for the kid in you!

1/2 tsp peppercorns
1" pattai
salt
500 ml water
Cook all the above for 1 whistle. fish out the pattai.throw it away.
reserve 5 pieces of thandu-chop it. Grind the rest of solids to a paste. mix with the water & pass thru a sieve.
To the strained liquid add the following:
1 tsp soy sauce
1/2 tsp green chilly sauce
pepper pwd.
chopped thandu.
Let it boil for 2-3 mins. take off the froth tht forms on top of the soup.
Add in 1 tsp corn flour mixed in water. The soup shouldn't be too thick. it should still be watery after adding the corn flour mix.
Let boil for a min.
Add in chopped spring onions.
Imme take off flame.
Serve hot.
Note:
Next time I might leave out ginger & pattai. Those r not the best spices to go with thandu soup. But they were not bad either. :lol2:

Lauki kheer:
--------------
lauki - 500 g peel of the skin and grate it. no need to remove the seeds. i use to select the tender vegetable.
in a vessel put the grated vegetable cover and cook for 10 mins in the slow fire. also u can microwave it. the raw smell should go from the vegetable.
in a heavy bottom vessel, add 1 litre of whole milk, when it comes to boil, add sugar 2 cups of sugar and allow it boil, it should reduce little.
now add the cooked vegetable with the water (water may come from vegetable). allow it to boil for five minutes
blanch 2 tblsp of pistas(remove skin), 5 cashews, 5 almonds (remove skin), grind to a paste, add this to milk mixture. let it boil for 3 mins.
soak 1/2 cup of basmati rice for 1/2 hour and grind to a coarse paste. add this paste to the milk mixture.
allow it to boil for 5 to 10 mins, now the mixture will become little thick.
once it comes to the room temp, add little rose water or rose essence and mix thoroughly.
now pour this mixture in a serving tray, garnish with (blanch another 2 tblsp of pistas, remove skins and sliced) pistas, saffron.
keep this in the refrigerator, for a day and serve.
it u want like pudding, add more of rice, if u want it to be semisolid, my measurement will be correct.
sugar will be not like payasam. this dish will not be very sweet. mild sweet it will be.
if there is any doubt, please let me know.

Kugan, don't worry about the gelatin. Mistakes happen to most people. I'm sure you are aware of a candy known as "Mentos". It contains gelatin too though I'm not sure if it's from pig or cow.
Like Madhu, I always thought that gelatin is actually pig fat. Nevertheless, only after reading Paramashiva's post did I know that gelatin can be produced through cows' fat too.
Anyway, Mentos is sold widely in Malaysia and people seem to purchase them in huge amount, totally ignoring the fact that gelatin is contained in it. The Malaysian Government too is ignorance of the "gelatin factor" and has never made it an issue til' date.
So, don't worry about this. You're just not exposed to the contents of gelatin. That's not your fault.

Another version of thandu soup inspired by chettinad style tomato soup recipe. Since thandu doesn't have any taste, d soup tastes more like tomato soup but it does have all the goodness of thandu. And much more colorful(beautiful orange color) & flavourful than the earlier version.
Vazhai thandu soup / Banana stem soup : version 2
Heat lil ghee in a pressure cooker. Add in 1" pattai, 1 krambu, 1 small yelkkai, 1 tsp sommbu. let brown.
Add green chilly, 1 s.onion chopped, 1 L. tomato. fry for 2 mins.
Add 10-12 round pieces of thandu,1 heaped tbsp yellow moong dhal, turmeric, salt & pepper pwd. mix
Add 500 ml water & cook for 3 whistles.
let it cool down a bit. reserve 4 pieces of thandu & then grind the rest of the soup mixture.
Pass thru a sieve.
Chop the reserved thandu & add to the soup. the soup should be watery(like clear soup). So add more water if req. Bring it to a boil n let simmmer for 2-3 mins.
Add chopped mint , mix & take off flame.
Serve hot.

K, I'm sooooo crazy abt chaats... :slurp: try it & kids might like it... chaats are so easy to prepare provided u've done some prep work already...
:) thanks for this lovely recipe :) have two questions though.....
double boiler: will a milk cooker do?
can we use cocoa powder instead of chocolate?

Another healthy restaurant style recipe from http://saffrontrail.blogspot.com/2007/11/steamed-vegetable-manchurian-in-gravy.html
I'm yet to try it... Thanks Nandita for the recipe... I'm posting the recipe here for easy reference.
Steamed vegetable manchurian
For the manchurian balls
1 loosely packed cup grated bottle gourd or zucchini
2 medium carrots, finely grated
2 cups finely grated or minced cabbage
Upto 1 cup whole wheat flour
1 tbsp finely minced / grated ginger
2 green chillies, finely chopped
1 tsp salt
handful of coriander leaves, finely chopped
1/2 tsp black pepper powder
1. In a large bowl, mix all ingredients, except flour.
Add flour gradually, while kneading, without using any water. The salt will drain out the water in the gourd. Add upto one cup flour until you get a soft pliable, non sticky dough.
2. Place 4-5 cups of water in the steamer, bring to a boil.
3. Make small balls - about over an inch diameter and arrange them on the oiled perforated vessel to be kept in the steamer. You could also use a bamboo steamer or idli maker.
4. Steam for 10-12 minutes, until a skewer inserted into the balls comes out clean.
While the balls are steaming, you can get the sauce ready.
For sauce:
2 fresh green / red chillies, finely chopped
1 tsp finely chopped ginger
4-5 flakes of garlic, finely minced
1 tbsp oil
1 green bell pepper or carrot, cut into strips
1 medium red onion, finely sliced
1 cup chopped spring onion greens
1-2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp white vinegar
1/2 tsp salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1 tbsp wheat flour dissolved in one cup water
1 cup water or vegetable stock
Directions to make sauce
1. In a large wok, heat a tbsp of vegetable oil. On high heat, saute the chillies, ginger and garlic for a few seconds.
2. Add the bell pepper, onions and half the spring onion greens, rapidly stir on high heat for 1-2 minutes, till somewhat cooked yet crunchy.
3. Add the soy sauce, vinegar, salt and pepper, stir well.
4. Pour into the wok the wheat flour-water mixture. Let this come to a boil and thicken.
5. Adjust the thickness of the sauce to your liking, using the remaining one cup water or stock.
6. Garnish with remaining spring onion greens, put in the steamed balls. Let this come to a simmer. Let the balls soak in the sauce for around 15 minutes before serving hot with rice or noodles.
We loved this dish. Steaming really did not take away anything from the dish, in fact we had more pleasure in eating knowing that our dinner was a whole bunch of healthy steamed and sauteed veggies.
Try it out and it is sure to surprise you, that something so healthy can be so yum :)

Anu, I am not an expert. Just to let you know what I know.
Anu, boil some water in a small pot.
Put your chocolate and milk in another container.
Hold the container that contains the chocolate and milk
over the boiling water. DO NOT TOUCH THE WATER
The steam from the boiling water will melt the chocolate.
Stir till the chocolate and milk becomes smooth and silky.
Do not stir for a very long time.
If you want to use cocoa powder, than you must use, condensed
milk and little butter, to get the thick silky smooth texture.
Sorry if any one thinks that I am wrong.
All are welcome to give their views.

Add in chopped cori. leaves & mix.
Stuff it between 2 slices of bread & toast it in a sandwich toaster. Yum!!!
Serve with tomato sauce if preferred.
Variation:

Don't make the stuffing too dry. Juicy stuffing is what we r looking for.

Dear all
Those who are vegetarians, if you ever go to a Chinese or oriental restaurant, please avoid chilli sauce as they contains the skin of 'shrimps'.

As Far as I knoe 'Horlicks' is made out of whey , which is 'mostly' vegi ,
BUT, it may contains vitamins and minerals which are 'not' vegie, pls check on the label before you buy it.
As Horlicks in India is different to the ones they sell here in UK

OMG!!! I don't think so!!
ah! Just remembered this !
The whey protein used in the Horlicks products is suitable for vegetarians because it is produced using either a microbiological rennet or a plant-based alternative, rather than rennet produced from animal sources.

diet control is not a single human or national problem, it is international problem
one day you found lost your weight,
you do't know fearing factor is
people who lose weight gain it back.
This can be accomplished on the diet side of things by:
-Eating smaller meals more frequently
-when you are going to dining table Counting portions instead of worrying about exact calories
-Focusing on natural fibers like fruits and vegetables
-Drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
