Was listening to Anne Anne from Kozhi koovudhu and then landed upon this hilarious song 'Ara kurayaa sethavanum' from Thozhar Pandiyan.

Raja is one Music director who has been uninhibited when it comes to composing freaked out songs like these....
Ofcourse we have the hall of fame songs like the 'Raathiri Nerathil' from Idhayathai Thirudaadhe and the 'competition' song from Nadigan. It is high time we catalogue these songs...

In the same film (Thozhar pandiyan)
Paal irukkum pazham irukkum has all kinda voices freaking out.
The world pamous song for freakout is the Karagattakkaram gem 'Oor vittu Ooru vandhu'.
Apart from Raaja - no maai ka laal has touched this genre properly .

Jai,

Good to see this topic as I was hearing two such songs in repeat mode recently.

'Anne Anne' from 'Kadhal Saadhi' is outstanding. The lyrics, the singing, the beat and overall the attitude. This is the way to go dude :) Right from the pallavi the freakiness is present. This is very unlike the earlier freaky songs that he had given. A sort of kuthu with fun written all over it.

http://www.thiraipaadal.com/albums/ALBIRR00285.html

Another song I have written about earlier and am listening to currently is 'jakkamma' from 'Solla Marandha Kadhai'. The song is so well structured, i.e., it is deliberately not structured well since it is sung by drunkards. The whole songs sways as if it is drunk. The rhythm, the laugh once in a while, the stop start mode, everything is perfectly in place reflecting the drunkeness. Everytime I hear this song I am amazed as to how Raja can conjure up drunkeness by his music!!! No gimmicks here. Just a touch of genius.

'Jyothi' was an album dedicated to freak out songs. There is one nice melody in this movie, 'siricha kolli mala kuyilu' but the other songs are of the freak out variety.

'Gama Gama' is a superb imitation of an hungry guy. You can easily imagine a bunch of hungry guys who are smelling the masala flavors emanating from the neighboring house. The song has the urgency of the hungry person. The lyrics are lovely. This is one real freak out song.

'asai madana' from this movie was already discussed in another thread. Shailaja does a great. Raja in many songs uses carnatic orchestration, with the mridangam and all, for conveying the freakout nature. Mixing one of the most serious musical genres with comedy to come out with a heady concoction. As Vinatha had pointed out, 'kadal kasakudaiyya' is one such lovely effort.

'pombala kannula bodhai' is another good freak out number from 'Jyothi'. Malaysia Vasudevan did a good job in such numbers by imparting lot of energy into them. SPB as usual loved these freak out songs since they gave him ample opportunity to 'act' with his voice.

Check out 'Jyothi'. You won't find an album which is more freaked out that this!!

original remix in 1977

this is a comedy mix starting with thyagaraja's kokiladwani kriti ' toli nenu jesina' and ending with 'kabhi kabhi' in kalyani. enjoy vkr, tengai etc in the dialogues.

this remix is from the movie 'avar enakke sondham' which also had 'devan thiruchabai malargale', surangani and thenil aadum roja.

another remix in the film 'un kannil neer vazhindaal'. this is also a comedy mix starting with 'ilamai idho idho' by malaysia followed by 'ponmeni urugudhe' a kalyani and 'naan poren munnale' from ye aatha. here ye aatha which is originally in tisram is given in chatusra nadai.

and raja even touches 'come september' in the end before 'anbe inbam'.

avar enakkE sondham -

this had the beginning of such 'loLLu' songs with 'surAngani':-)

That song was immensely popular among youngsters - school boys, college boys etc. I believe it's a "remix" or "remake" of some பொப்பிசைப்பாடல் from ilangai or malaysia or far east (initially I thought it wasn't even a movie song but a song like சின்ன மாமியே உன் செல்ல மகளெங்கே).

There was an inter-school competition of variety entertainmant in a hospital where I was present to collect a prize for essay writing on leprosy (as a 8th or 9th grader). A senior boy & girl from a school - both stylishly dressed in bell-bottom pants - danced for this song - which was the first time I heard this and was immediately hooked :-)

The starting guitar itself kicks off...

Oldellaam goldu - P.Suseela rocks to this freakout jazz - blues - softrock unclassifiable funny song - watch out for the the sax notes - they are outstanding...

Has a song sung by L.R.Easwari too and one wonders the 'Arrogant' Raaja working with her after she snubbed him during recording of AnnakkiLi. So many myths are built aroud by personalities right from 70s and much of this is done by magazines of arumai thamizh nadu and their 21st century offshoots - BLOGGERS.

narayanan,

Thanks for the songs. Loved them both. We should give it Raja for he takes off on his own songs!!!

One more absolutely freak out song is 'ulagam suttudada' from 'Karimedu Karuvayan'. It starts off with 'Koundar' showing his 'kaivannam' on Senthil and then the song freaks out. The lyrics are hilarious as well. 'ellorum nirvanam namakenda pudhu veti'. :) Very very enjoyable song.

http://www.thiraipaadal.com/albums/ALBIRR00279.html

Another similar freak out song is from 'Naane Raja Naane Mandhiri', 'eleasa'. While this song is good, the superbly freaky song is 'thai avalin'. Can't stop laughing whenever I hear the song. The tune and the lyrics complement each other so much. Listen to it to once and you will know that this man's brain is wired very differently. Nothing is low brow, nothing is high brow. Everything goes and I love it.

Vel: I had also mentioned 'anne anne'. Heard the other Kadal Jathi song only recently and it is a freak out song as well.

One more freak out song is 'mel topule' from 'Ivan'. Initially was not too keen on this song but loving it now. If you hear the interludes, they have no right to be there in this song!!! When heard alone you cannot associate them with such a song. I realised it when my tape started at the interlude and since this song is not yet in my blood, I was wondering in which song does such a soothing interlude appear and there it was in a very unexpected song!!! As usual when you hear it you don't find it incongruous at all!!

The site said the movie is pulamai pithan - I felt that there was no movie by that name - hence the query...
It has some other dont care lyrics too
'nikkaadhe Odu'
idhu sarkaaru Roadu.

The raaga used in this song is also something we discussed sometime back (I know u brought it up when discussing KAragattakaari songs) - it is the same as 'Sivagaami nenapinile' - I remember u were making a mention that it is traditionally a serious raaga and IR has pioneered the use of it in a funny way.
Surprised to also see Baradwaj Rangan discussing funny freak out songs in Thamizh film music and the songs he has taken for analysis are both by Raaja.
1. Aattu kutti muttayittu from 16 vayadhinile and
2. Aasai kiLiye from thambikku endha ooru very nifty aaarabhi violated in funny ways for the context..

Thanks Jai for pointing me to the Baradwaj Rangan article. Along with Aarabhi we can add Shanmukhapriya to the list. 'kadhal kasakuddaiya' is every bit as funky as 'aasai kilye'. Also the song from 'Unnal Mudiyum Thambi', "enna samayalo". It had a different tune in Telugu. That was also a funky song, "randi randi randi".

Listen to this song from 'Padikatha Pannayar'. "konadha senkarumbu". Seems to be either Malayamarutham or Valaji.

Also listen to 'ada onnun teriyadha paapa'. Absolutely freaky and absolutely rocking. A raga like Shanmukhapriya is taken and totally turned on its head. A very strong carnatic flavor ragam forms the basis of this folk type fun song with shenoy and thavil providing superb accompaniment. Only a crazy guy can conceive Shanmukhapriya like this. Hear how he makes Malaysia do the raga bit in the middle of charanam. Rocking, rocking, rocking stuff. And the thing which surprises me even more is that this is a Sivaji movie!!!

Me too listening to 'Ellam Inba Mayam' today. Not only 'barla barla' but every song in this movie is a freak out song!!! I had initially mentioned that 'Jyoti' was an album dedicated to freak out songs. You can ass 'Ellam Inba Mayam' to the list. Three songs are absolutely dedicated to craziness and one song has wonderfully freaked out instrumentation. 'maman voodu' is a lovely take on 'rara venugopala'. Absolute iconoclasm.

http://www.thiraipaadal.com/albums/ALBIRR00129.html

Also listening to 'vengaya sambarum' from 'Paneer Pushpangal'. Ofcourse, with the other three songs being all time great songs, this song generally gets pushed to the background or fast forwarded. This is another great freakout song. Starts off as a great Shanmukhapriya, in between there is suddenly some singing reminiscent of MKT and towards the end, the songs shifts to Nadanamakriya, doing a different take on 'Ae teeruga' song. Lyrics complement the craziness perfectly.

Possibly featured in the "மெட்டொன்று, பாட்டுப்பல" program of இலங்கை ஒ.கூ.ஸ்.

This program exposed the sources of many - like mEghamE mEghamE (S-G), AhA vandhiruchchu along with the well-known Boney-M / ABBA lifts of various composers those days.

app,

My feeling is that the initial part or the pallavi may have been from some western source. I can't see the later part being western in the sense that Shanmukhapriya never appears in western music and the last part definitely is the remake of the Ramdas krithi, 'ae theeruga'. So Raja seems to have mixed multiple sources and freaked out!!!

thumburu,
vetRi vizhA mArugO is KSC, 100% sure.

The only doubt is who sings with her in the pallavi for the first time (without drums part). It could be UR or someone else :-)

DR,

No. I did not watch it online. I got a DVD which has '50 Kutthu songs' of Raja and this is one of the songs in that DVD.

'varuvai kanna neerada' from Pattakathi Bhairavan. I have never heard this song before. I read it in Raj's blog. Let me point you to what Raj has to say about this song:

Jai,

:) listening to the song. Absolute freakout. The usage of mridangam in the pallavi is a touch of genius and adds to the funkiness of the song. And yes, the flute and synthesizer interaction is :D This is one category where no one else can come anywhere close to him.

Venkkiram - It's Vaayya Vaayya from Japanil Kalyanaraman.

I haven't listened to this in a while. Nice pick. Agree it should be celebrated in the same vein as Aadi Maasam Kaathadikka.

:banghead:
