Finas To Explore Cooperation With Indian Film Industry

KUALA LUMPUR, April 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and India are exploring ways to cooperate in producing films in the near future, said the Director-General of The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas), Mohd Mahyidin Mustakim Monday.

He said the venture was being explored by Finas with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) via the visit of famous Tamil film star Kamal Haasan.

"The visit of Kamal Haasan is a result of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's visit to India earlier this year when Finas, Persatuan Karyawan Malaysia and FICCI signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on film production," Mohd Mahyidin told reporters.

He said the collaborative effort may open up opportunities for the local film industry to venture into the international market.

Kamal Haasan who was also present expressed hope that the cooperation with Finas could produce films from both countries for the international market.

"That is my ambition...we hope to produce films soon. Its a good enough answer, although it would take a lot of effort to make it a reality," said Kamal Haasan, who has acted in more than 200 films.

MDeC To Set Up Centre To Produce Experts For Creative Industry

PUTRAJAYA, April 6 (Bernama) -- Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) is looking into setting up a centre of expertise by middle of next year to produce experts for the broadcast and creative industries.

Its chief executive officer Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said the centre to be located in Cyberjaya would cost about RM10 million to set up and be undertaken together with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

"The creative multimedia space and digital content is obviously growing at a higher pace," he told reporters at the MSC Malaysia's "Meet and Greet" session and media luncheon here today with FICCI chairman Dr Kamal Hassan, who is also a famous actor.

"But the talent is required in Malaysia to drive the industry as the demand is huge for the broadcast and creative industries in both nations," he said.

Badlisham said the collaboration was also part of MSC Malaysia's initiative to develop world-class co-production initiatives in broadcasting and digital content.

He said the country currently has about 7,000 skilled workers and MDeC was aiming to double the figure by generating experts through the centre of expertise to cater for the requirements in the Asian region as well.

"Malaysia needs to take advantage of the demand in the content field," he said, adding that the content field referred to special effects, animations and other digital specifications.

Saying that MDeC wanted to expand further on the visual effect segment, Badlisham said the collaboration with India-based FICCI was vital to further exchange of information technology as well as to learn from each other.

"We are confident that with this collaboration and other similar efforts, the industries concerned can become a more vibrant sector that will contribute significantly to the Malaysian economy," he said.

"India is the first country we have engaged with and we will be looking into collaborating with other country bodies in the long run," he added.

According to Kamal, the governments of both countries will facilitate the centre of expertise in order to build up expertise in various fields as it is the most important requirement for the industries.

"I have a plan to establish a media institute in India and perhaps it will come together with the collaboration," he said.

He also said that the digital content segment was a new field with ample areas to be tapped, developed and cultivated, and the collaboration would be a significant development in both nations.

FICCI and MDeC, custodian of the MSC-Malaysia initiative, met today to discuss the promotion of bilateral trade and business match-making between Malaysian and Indian creative companies, in a follow-up to the memorandum of understanding signed during Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's visit to India in January.

Among the highlights of the discussion were potential collaboration for a slate of six to eight feature films to be co-produced by Malaysia and India, transfer of knowledge and skills on visual effects to the local creative industry, and setting up of the centre of expertise.

Flashback time: Kamal HaasaR's interview with Astro Vanavil during his 2005 Malaysia visit (I think around Tamil New Year's). It's an old interview but enjoy. One of those talks where KH didn't digress much and was very direct/relevant.

Dream projects with Kamal

VIJAYA BALASINGAM

Indian cinema icon Kamalhaasan will be working with Malaysian film and multimedia to initiate world-class productions, writes VIJAYA BALASINGAM

LIVING legend and one of India’s top actors Padmashree Dr Kamalhaasan was here on Monday for a short visit.

His visit was brought about by Multimedia Development Corporation of Malaysia (MDec) and the National Film Development Co-operation of Malaysia (Finas).

Kamal, 54, who heads the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s (FICCI) Entertainment Committee was one of the signatories of the 13 MoUs signed between India and Malaysia during Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s visit to Chennai, India last month.

Kamal signed for the FICCI in its arrangements with MDec.

The two organisations will work together to develop world-class co-production initiatives in broadcasting and digital content. It’s been a long journey uphill for the multi-talented actor who made his debut in the 1960 movie, Kalathoor Kannamma, when he was just 6 years old and won the National Film Award for best child artiste.

From there, he went on to win three National Awards and 18 Filmfare Awards over the years.

Kamal has also proved his mettle as a bharatanatyam dancer, screenplay writer, director, lyricist, playback singer and film producer.

Seven of his movies have been sent as India’s official entry to the Oscars. Some of his award-winning movies include Indian, Nayagan, Moondram Pirai, and Saagara Sangamam.

His best recent comedies are Thenali, Panchathanthiram, Pammal K.
Sambandam, Vasool Raja MBBS.
In the movie Avvai Shanmugi he plays a nanny. The movie was inspired by the comedy flick Mrs Doubtfire, starring Robin Williams in the leading role. Kamal was lauded for his brilliant performance.
His latest movie Dasavatharam sees him taking on 10 character roles. It’s the most expensive Indian film to date.

Hong Kong star Jackie Chan released the audio for the movie and was impressed by Kamal’s multi-faceted performance.

But Kamal’s dream project still is his 1997 maiden directorial venture Marudhanayagam — Lord of the Plains.
The movie was inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth ll.

But the film was put on hold due to its costly budget, he said, and because “at that time India was going nuclear and certain sanctions were implemented where foreign involvement was affected.” He said Marudhanayagam is trilingual — in English, French and Tamil.

If completed, it would have been the costliest film to have been made in Asia.

But now, with MDec and Finas’ involvement, a movie such as Marudhanayagam could be possible.

Finas director-general Mohd Mahyidin Mustakim is open to the idea. Kamal also talked about his vision to create an institute “that will produce many more like me”.

He said it would be his legacy to those aspiring to become talented actors. Kamal will be meeting Malaysian film producers to discuss possibilities of joint ventures not only in Tamil-Malay movies but also for documentaries and feature films.

Finas director-general Mohd Mahyidin Mustakim is open to the idea.Note to Kamal: In Malaysia this usually means, you won't be hearing about it anymore until someone pushes for it and then you won't be hearing about it anymore until someone pushes for it again and then you...you get the idea.

mudhumai on his face cud be seen in Mumbai Xpress itself! a combination of body fat plus jaded look contributed to that - in vettaiyadu, the look changed, but the weight was still retained!

in Dasa, it was back to pre-MX days and in UO, the spark seemed to have gone from his eyes!

Kamal's eyes are what make him look young or old - body/ facial fat are other indicators - if he keeps himself fit, i dont see why he cant look younger than his present self

#Marudhanayagam- #Kamal couldn't go beyond a point due to budget constraints, huge no. of junior artistes & the VFX drawbacks prevalent then
