“From our experiences of dealing with the empirical world, we understand and are aware of the need for applauding an action well done. It is natural for accolades to be heaped on some who has performed well. Even though the person may not have worked for recognition it is incumbent on us to acknowledge an achievement or offer our thanks if we have gained or benefitted from someone’s actions.”

These words of Osho will go well with AJITH absolutely. AJITH, the very name spells the excitement. He is Mr. Awesome. He is more exciting than his movies. He makes everyone enthusiastic. Champions like AJITH always shoot at the target. He has the courage to face the challenges and he is energetic at work. Whether it is performance or style, AJITH is a MASTER ENTERTAINER. Confident, Comfortable and Classic… defines the style of AJITH. AJITH is a genuine hero in reel as well as real life.

AJITH – Alternate word for self-confidence

Profile

He was born on 1st May, 1971. He has started his film career with ‘Prema Pusthagam’ in Telugu in 1992. In Tamil, he has started his career with ‘Amaravathy’ in 1993. So far he has acted in 48 movies including Telugu, Hindi besides Tamil. Fans affectionately call him as THALA, Ultimate Star.

THALA stands for
T – Truth, what he speaks…
H – Honesty, which is his policy….
A– Attraction, which is his quality….
L – Lion hearted, which is his attitude….
A – AJITH namesake of self-confidence.

THALA POLA VARUMA is the anthem of AJITH fans. He is also hailed as KING OF OPENING.

A rare and real beauty

Over the years, Tamil Film industry has seen several superstars whose earning potential and celebrity status could not be reconciled with their achievements as actors. These men and women often projected an image that was highly saleable in the era in which they got success but their popularity was mostly short-lived as public fancy zoomed away from them and on to someone or something else. Many have come and gone, but AJITH goes on and on. AJITH, on the other hand, is an enduring appeal simply because whatever attractions he offered were genuine and not something whipped up for the public. So far in his career, AJITH consciously did nothing to grab public attention. If Tamil Cinema is a thing of beauty, then its author is AJITH, arguably, the best looking male actor in the modern industry. Believe it or not, the camera does not do justice to AJITH’s looks at all. His beauty is at once breathtaking and radiant. He is a gifted actor, capable of producing breathtaking stuff, which he showed in his movies like VAALI, VARALAARU, etc. It is AJITH’s unmatched strength to use mischance and hardship as springboards to reach higher and higher that set him apart from the other great actors in the Tamil Film Industry.

Film Career

Certainly life has come full circle for the actor who was originally dismissed as a chocolate faced hero. The journey that began with films like Amaravathi, Vaanmathi, Aasai, Kadhal Kottai, Kadhal Mannan and progressed to Vaali, Amarkalam, Mugavari, Kandukondein Kandukondein, Dheena, Citizen and reached a different level with Villain, Varalaaru, the God Father, Kireedom and recently the Billa. As he said in Billa, his career has been built brick by brick on his own. He is an ideal actor to emulate in today’s competitive cine field where one has to be adept at both style and performance to be successful.

Performance

AJITH is one of the very few actors who stand by their convictions. He is one of the finest actors in the Tamil Film Industry. His repertoire of work is perhaps the most impressive among all new generation actors. Talent is talent. The Directors cannot create that. AJITH is fast approaching the ripe old age of 40 and with more than fifteen years of top class experience, he is still able to bring out his best for action scenes. The actor is perceived not only as being extremely talented, but also as unique, lending the AJITH style to every project he works on. He loves getting under the skin of the character and is known to go extremes to do so. His performance is a thing of destructive beauty, his style holds untold promise. His style and performance turned like a magic wand. His artistry was such, as he had a large fan following. He belongs to the class of actors who believe in doing everything right. When the Ultimate Star turns into an inspired performer, it is almost as if the performer and the performance are one and the same, almost as if the performer and the awe-struck audience are both transported into a dream world. Whether it is performance or style, AJITH is a mass entertainer.

Memorable roles

In the beginning of his career, AJITH was slotted as a romantic hero. But he refused to remain in this strait jacket. A variety of roles soon followed.

Deva, the no good man in VAALI,

Vasu, an adorable street toughie in AMARKALAM,

Sreedhar, a determined youngster who wants to become Music Director in MUGAVARI,

Manohar, an energetic young Director in KANDUKONDEN KANDUKONDEN,

Dheena, the gangster in DHEENA,

Subramani, a fisherman who seeks the retaining wall in his Athipatti village in CITIZEN,

Vishnu, a physically handicapped innocent in VILLAIN,

Sivashankar, a classical dancer with feminine qualities in VARALAARU aka GOD FATHER,

Sakthivel, an ambitious youth who wants to become a policeman in KIREEDOM and

David Billa, the underground DON and Velu, a pickpocket in BILLA

Hard climb

The rise of AJITH has not been meteoric because he worked hard for his success. It was his inner strength and conviction that he wanted to be the best. When his films like Paigavan, Ullasam, Nesam, Rettai jadai vayasu, etc. bombed as well, AJITH was shell-shocked but he did not despair. He never gave up. He tried again with adequate preparation and indomitable determination. And then, VAALI happened. With that, AJITH has become an overnight sensation. Indeed, he instantly began chipping away at some of the star’s lofty pedestal as Kollywood’s pre-eminent male star. Since, VAALI, he rose swiftly to the top. In fact, he has pulled off a major grosser at regular intervals. Yet again, he lost his concentration but this time his interest turned towards his favourite car racing. Then the critics fired so many bullets invariably, which had his name written on them. However, he not only survived but also proved enough in Box Office as well as in acting terms to take his place among the pantheons of Tamil Film Industry with his VARALAARU and BILLA.

Rebirth of Box Office dynamite

The can-do-will-do-spirit is admirable in any walk of life, but in AJITH’s case it became a ‘must do’. Critics complained that AJITH has not delivered a Box Office blockbuster, the audiences have been seeking since the glory days of VAALI & VILLAIN. Everyone has completely written him off. Just then, VARALAARU came as a morale-booster and became another milestone of his career. VARALAARU placed him back in action. The rebirth of the ‘Box Office Dynamite’ of the late 1990s was confirmed in 2006 with his VARALAARU aka GOD FATHER. The movie has been said to have grossed an unbelievable Rs.55 crores making it the second most successful Tamil Film at Box Office till 2006. AJITH has rediscovered his acting skills as well as his wonderful Box Office performance and, not surprisingly, he has once again become a prime target of the audiences. Furthermore, the enthusiasm and support of the AJITH fans is without parallel anywhere in the world.

BILLA – Emergence of a new era in TFI

Can a popular movie of a Superstar be remade in same language and still engross the audience? Secondly, can anyone fill the shoes of a Superstar in that movie? Everyone had a doubt in their mind when BILLA was said to be remade. For both these biggest questions, many would have responded ‘it is impossible’. But AJITH with the help of Vishnuvardhan has proved that he can attract the audiences with new style. Not even in a single frame, he has copied or followed the mannerisms and style of Superstar. Instead, he has set a new trend with his unique style and mannerisms. He has given a new dimension to the DON’s role. BILLA had style at AJITH’s feat. He has set his own standards. Dreams did come true, spectacularly true, and far sooner than expected.

With his sparkling stylish performance in BILLA, the Ultimate Star has proved that he is not finished yet. Ultimate Star’s BILLA is world class in style and it promised a new era in Tamil Film Industry. It is a fairy tale that AJITH’s BILLA made a rare and astonishing sweep of Box Office collections. Throwing caution to the wind, he hit the aggressive mode in BILLA. In the half-real, half-fantastic world the reason for watching BILLA has been gloriously realized. BILLA, an epitome of stylishness of the International standards, become a prestigious film in Tamil Film Industry. AJITH has displayed admirable control as an underworld Don in BILLA and grabbed his lost glory. In the pantheon of Dons, AJITH’s BILLA is the tallest of them all. AJITH’s deeds in BILLA have simply taken one’s breath away. He did everything to recapture his crowning glory and he succeeded absolutely.

Last movie at Box Office

AEGAN turned out to be a mediocre one in AJITH’s career. A lot was expected of AJITH, especially after he had an amazing run in the Box Office with his BILLA. Today his movies depend heavily on AJITH and this is not a healthy sign for him. It puts a lot of pressure on him too.

Professionalism

He is completely a Director’s actor. For him the satisfaction of his Director is paramount. In addition, he has to satisfy his fans for whom he is THALA. He does not want to change the way he works. He will still do one film at a time. For him, it’s the most common sensical way to work. So far, his choice of films has not been dictated by the banner. He believes in being a team player. The extent of his output depends on each Director and on whether he wants to make use of him to a larger degree or lesser degree. He is a fantastic artiste and an amazing human being. AJITH is a down-to-earth person. He is very pragmatic in his approach. He has two different personalities. Off-screen he is said to be very sweet and kind, but onscreen he is a lion. For sheer determination he stands unmatched.

Courage in adversity – Thy name is AJITH

Extraordinary courage in the face of adversity is a talent. Never-say-die-spirit and in-the-trenches resolve are talents. There is a certain polish that always goes with the patented AJITH’s poise as he radiates self-confidence. But more than anything else, the hallmark of AJITH’s success story is the man’s astonishing ability to stand upto the pressure and hits his way out of adversity. How many times in his filmy career has AJITH looked at adversity in the eye without blinking, how many times has he boldly blasted his way out of trouble! Pressure, fear of failure – these can either impel one to excel or render him numbly inept. Only a great performer like AJITH can actually turn pressure to his advantage. It is in times of crisis that the challenge of performance beckons. To the genuine ones, this becomes a style of life, a goal, even a gauntlet. The mere challenge of digging yourself and out of a pit is sometimes a greater thrill and motivating factor than the joy of success.

Among younger generation heroes, has anyone ready to take such a risk? In response to the question, AJITH will do it. We have witnessed him in taking risks in VARALAARU and BILLA. In Tamil Film Industry, the AJITHs, Suryas and the Vikrams have loved to live on the edge at different time but AJITH alone among all the top younger generation heroes has constantly stuck to on-the-edge script like the greatest West Indian genius cricketer, the lone ranger, Brian Charles LARA.

Box office Bonanza

Some of the Box office Bonanza from AJITH till 2008 is as follows:

Aasai (1995)
Kadhal Kottai (1996)
Vaali (1999)
Amarkalam (1999)
Dheena (2000)
Citizen (2000)
Villain (2003)
Varalaaru (2006)
Billa (2007)

Awards

His 3 film fare awards are proof that AJITH isn’t simply a chocolate boy. First filmfare award came in 1999 for his outstanding performance in VAALI. In 2003, VILLAIN won him the second filmfare award. His biggest hit (while compared with production cost), obviously, has been VARALAARU, The God Father for which he received his third filmfare award for the year 2006.

In addition to these, he won the Best supporting actor Filmfare award for his KANDUKONDEN KANDUKONDEN. He has also won Tamil Nadu State Film Special award for Best Actor for his performance in POOVELLAM UN VASAM for the year 2001.

Mission

These successes proved another point that AJITH can hold together a film all on his own, without the support of his co-stars. None of the modern day heroes have that vital screen presence which can lure the crowds to the theatre. An AJITH release, good or bad, is enough to make people queue up outside cinema halls. That is why AJITH can today be assured a glittering place in the history of Tamil Cinema. It is crucial for the industry to have personalities with the ‘natural charm’ or ‘warm humanity’ of AJITH. There is no artificiality about AJITH. He was a sort of my idol when I was growing up. AJITH might have enjoyed watching Rajini and Kamal but he has never copied anybody. He has his own style with a power-packed performance. The last stop for the AJITH Express reads ‘All time greats’. The destination would perhaps read, ‘The greatest’.

Lessons to be learned

In short, few ever fail by trying, few ever win who wait. They fail, they alone who have not striven. Thus, to be simply the best, one should try and try again with dedication and determination, and this is the lesson that we have to learn from the success of Ultimate Star AJITH.

Ajith Kumar - Trivia

In 2001, Ajith played the role of Shah Rukh Khan's brother in the commercially unsuccessful historical film Asoka.

In 2007, Billa broke all of Ajith's previous records. The film got an opening equal to that of Rajnikanth's Sivaji: The Boss. The movie was the remake of Rajinikanth's 1980 Tamil film Billa which itself was a remake of Amitabh Bachchan's 1978 Hindi film Don which in turn was remade by Shah Rukh Khan in 2006 as Don again.

Ajith is a professional car racer. In 2004, he was India’s third best driver after Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandok.

Ajith has been funding the Mohini-Mani Foundation since 2003 and is aimed at helping to ease the problems of urban sprawl.
Has an Alsatian dog named Honey.

After his surgery for a broken vertebra, he lost feeling in his legs. But he took on a vow to recover and walked all the way from his home in Chennai to the Balaji shrine in Tirupathi, Andhra Pradesh.

In Armarkalam, he was paired with fellow actress Shalini for the first time. The film was a super-hit, and Ajith instantly fell for his leading lady, who was to later become his wife. He even remembers the date and time he first met her: March 17, 1999 at 10.30am.

Active in spreading awareness of the Green Revolution, an effort to clean up the Chennai environment and encouraging people to plant saplings.

The Tamil actor is the middle son of three, born to a Sindhi mother and Malayalee father.

Initially dropped out of school to become a race-car driver.

Was a salesman in the garment export business for a while, and also tried a career in modelling. He starred in a few commercial advertisements, which eventually led him to the film industry.

Ajith Kumar - Quotes

I wouldn't say I wasn't interested in studies. It just wasn't there in me to pursue academics. I would open a page in the textbook and start thinking about everything under the sun except what was there in the book. I was more into extra-curricular activities and sports like NCC, rifle shooting, aero-modelling, bike racing...

Acting is a learning process, and what you are doing in your early films is essentially picking up the nuances, the tricks of your trade. And somewhere along the line, you become analytical, and learn to enjoy what you are doing. Essentially, though, I see myself as a director's medium - he needs something from me, I deliver it.

I don't read anything other than the newspapers, Reader's Digest or National Geographic. I don't want to put up this act of being a voracious reader, which I am not.

I was on my own after my school days itself. After my school, I worked as an apprentice with Enfield and got a diploma. From there, I moved on to garment exports.

I was fiercely independent. There is a very thin line between confidence and arrogance. I was very confident which was misconstrued as arrogance most of the time. But I can't help it, can I?

Everything happens so fast while you are racing on a bike. Adrenaline is flowing all the time with people cheering you loudly. And, when you are on the bike, you forget everything. Maybe because of my character, I could relate to the sport very well.

I guess the ability to take decisions fast has helped me a lot. Whatever I am today in this industry, from nowhere, from scratch to be a successful actor is only because of that. I take my own decisions and there is no godfather to back me up. I have committed mistakes but I don't regret them, as they are all part of growing up. And I feel proud today to be where I am on my own merit, not having pulled strings.

I took to films only to make some money so that I could pay off all the debts that I had.

I met with a very serious accident after my first film. And that put an end to motor racing, my passion. A week before my race, we had a practice session and I had a very nasty fall. I injured my back and I had to undergo three major surgeries on my back. I was in bed for one-and-a-half years.

I have always been a fighter in life. I never got anything on a platter; I had to fight for everything in life, even when I was working, racing and acting in films. It has always been a big struggle for me.

Ajith Kumar is zipping past milestones pretty fast. SUDHISH KAMATH catches up with the actor-racer

ALL CHARACTERS and incidents in this story are completely true. Any resemblance to fiction is purely co-incidental and unintentional.
He finished sixth in the last race after making it to the fourth position during his recent qualifiers. Ranked seventh this season at the Formula Asia BMW Championships, actor Ajith Kumar has another six races to catch up with the top four.

For someone who is making his debut at the international level, he's zipping past milestones pretty fast.

For someone who is older than most of his competitors by over 10 years, he's giving them a race for their money.

For someone who has undergone over half a dozen surgeries on his leg and back, he has a spring in his step.

For someone who has had no corporate backing whatsoever, to be part of the world's most expensive sport, he's done well for himself, all by himself.

Struggle. That's what stories of glory are made of. Let's go back to where the story started.

The flag-off. "1983. My father worked in a pharmaceutical company called Biddle Sawyer. One of the directors there, Vimal Shah used to race in the Sholavaram circuit. The office was in Alwarpet and during the season, the compound would be packed with Vijay Mallya's team cars, drivers, mechanics. I must have been about 11. That was my first tryst with racing," recalls Ajith, who is currently racing against time to wrap up his Diwali release "Anjaneya".

When he turned 18, the first thing the high school drop-out got himself was a driver's licence. Ajith wasn't into cars then. He was into bikes. "Bike racing wasn't all that expensive. I had a Yamaha RX 100, modified. Used to race in the Group E Class at the Irungattukottai circuit near Sriperumbudur."

Ajith had to take up a job to to support his career in racing. Joining as an apprentice, he rose to be a merchandiser with a garment export company, doing small-time press ads and TV commercials occasionally. "I had put a lot of money into racing. I would go about borrowing tyres from my friends. They used to help when the chains wore out. But then, I knew my responsibilities, there was no money in racing then. Today is a different story, we are going international with the sport getting more prominence," he recalls.

But what put the brakes on his ambition, at least temporarily, was an accident in 1993 during a testing round. "It wasn't major.
It was more because of lack of sponsors than just the accident. I had to make a choice between films and racing. As the movies were happening, I began concentrating on my profession. It was a wise decision for a boy who was just 21."

"I had to wait for 13 years before I finally got to do what I always wanted to," adds Ajith.

Accidents have been haunting the actor over the years, more because of his stunts than racing. "I never had a choice but to move on. I've got used to pain," he reasons. "It's one of the harsh realities of the sport. We drivers understand that it could be the last time we are sitting in a car. But if you start to think about it, the thought of injury or death might make you lose 1/10th of a second which could be the difference between victory and defeat." In fact, that's where Ajith believes he has an edge over the younger participants. "A lot of people believe that 15-16 is the right age to be into Formula racing. At that age, you may be quick but lack maturity. You don't have fear, but lack consistency. Age has nothing to do with racing. As long as you are physically fit and mentally alert, nothing can stop you."

It's not just the sheer speed that thrills him. "It's the whole process.

Waiting for the red to turn green. The tension. The waiting and then the rush of adrenaline to race ahead of every driver. It's a beautiful world inside the car. The speed might be 240 kmph, but for a driver it's still slow. You can feel what's happening. Till the car is on the tarmac, you don't realise the speed. It's that feeling that makes it worth it."

Ajith makes it a point to ask speed freaks to take to the track and not the road. "Even today, I tell my friends, wear a helmet. We have to take responsibility for our life but we don't have the right to take another life." The actor's biggest grievance, however, is the sponsors' step-motherly treatment towards the sport. "But in two years, that will all change. It will be a sport that will be on a par with cricket."

For now, he's funding himself with help from producer friend. "It's only fair that I first prove myself before I get sponsors." Time. Isn't that a huge factor? "Let me tell you a story that few people know about. Michael Schumacher recently equalled a record of winning the World Championships five times.

That record was held by an Argentinian called Juan Manuell Fangio in 1957. At a time when motorsport was more dangerous and a driver was killed every Grand Prix. He started when he was 38. He went on to race till he was 52. Even MGR consolidated his lead roles and position in his mid-forties. What he went on to do is for everyone to see."

Ajith comes up with his mission statement: "I will get to the highest level possible. The strategy is to get into the F3 Scholarship class next year. My budget is over £ 2,50,000 but I have the ability. As of now, I don't see any sponsors. But they will come along."

The journey has just begun, after all. The race has just started. Way to go, Ajith!

[tscii:2b14e878a5]Speed dreams are made of these… Recently published article in The Hindu dt. 27.03.2010

Come April and Ajith Kumar will hit the Formula 2 circuit at Silverstone in U.K. NIKHIL RAGHAVAN on the actor's passion for racing

"I hope I inspire many youngsters to take to this sport"

Acting is a profession he strayed into by accident, but motor racing is an activity Ajith Kumar pursues with passion. When he burns the tracks at Silverstone, U.K., in April this year for the season opener in Formula 2, he will be satisfying his hunger to achieve a different kind of success from that of being a top star in Tamil films.

FIA Formula Two Championships, or F2 as it is popularly known, is a low-cost series (in comparison to F1, of course) of motor racing that provides a platform for young drivers to compete in international circuits and gives them a chance to step into the highest echelons of motor sports — F1. It's considered a feeder event to F1, in providing talented drivers.

Says Ajith, “The Championship winner will get a free test drive with the Williams F1 team. And, all the top three winners will qualify for a super licence which will enable them to get into Formula 1.”
When he first raced internationally, in the Formula BMW Asia Championship in 2003, his best results were in Korea (Qualified 4th and finished 6th). Subsequently, in 2004 Ajith raced in the British Formula 3 Scholarship Class, where he achieved two podium finishes, both in third place at Donington Park and Knockhill.

Staying power

“When I first came into films, I was pitted against established stars. In F3 too, I was racing against established drivers. It's a different matter that many of them either failed or didn't last the course. By sheer staying power on the track without doing anything foolish, I ensured I got these wins,” says Ajith.

After that, Ajith went back to doing films, delivered two successes in “Aegan” and “Billa.” He then got busy with “Aasal” and wouldn't have given racing a second thought if he had not run into old friend Narain Karthikeyan, the first Indian to have driven an entire season of Formula One.

“The MRF Racing championships were going on in Sriperumbudur and their newly developed Formula car was being run. Narain invited me to take part in the third and final round of the event. It was then that the bug bit and I didn't think twice before saying yes,” says Ajith. For someone who was stepping onto the track after some years, Ajith romped home a decent 7th of 11 cars, with just two seconds shy of the winner. Later, at a dinner, Narain suggested that Ajith, with all his passion, interest and natural talent as a race driver should try the F2 series. “He put me onto Jonathan Palmer who was handling the European F2 series. A few days of negotiations later, I was signed up.”

Ajith had never been in an F2 car before. With its entire architecture being different from F3, he did the next best thing. “I went to Malaysia, hired a V6 Formula car which has more or less the same tech-specs, and spent a week getting used to driving a car with paddle shifts and brake-throttle arrangements.”
With no time to work on sponsorships for the current year's season, Ajith decided that he would enter the series nevertheless, with the hope that corporates would realise the potential of sponsoring a star racer. He enlisted the services of Piers Hunnisett, who owns Eurasia Motorsport Management to manage his affairs in Europe. “It is necessary to turn into a thorough professional from the word go, especially in a highly competitive series like F2. I could only do that by getting the necessary aid and support of people who are in the know of things. The cars are all of one-make and very close to a Formula 1 machine.”

For Ajith, motivation is the driving factor, be it in films or in motor sports. Asia is fast becoming a major region for Formula 1, with China, Malaysia, Singapore and possibly India too joining the bandwagon. “Formula 1 is steadily moving to Middle East, South East Asia and Asia. This is the time to encourage a lot of our youngsters to take to motor sport. With India also on the F1 radar, I thought I could use my celebrity status to attract a lot of our own viewers to watch international races and develop a keen interest in the sport. I hope I inspire many youngsters to take to this sport.”

Ajith knows the odds are stacked against him — he is 38, hasn't raced in six years, and will be pitted against many established drivers. He hasn't raced in most of the circuits. “But, what encourages me is there are two other Indians in the series — Armaan Ebrahim and Parthiva Sureshwaran, both of whom are more experienced than I. Combined, we will be a formidable force as an Indian contingent, although we are all individual drivers. This is probably the first time in international racing that there are three Indians on the track. I feel motivated and will give my best.”
As for role models, Ajith says, “I look up to Narain and Karun Chandhok. They have achieved status and success like no other. They are role models for most race drivers in India.”

Fitness regime

The attention he pays to health and fitness to survive the stressful racing environment, has made Ajith hit the gym circuit and also have control over his diet. Since the release of his last film “Aasal”, for which he gained weight to suit the character, Ajith has shed almost 10 kilos. And, he has strengthened his neck and shoulder muscles.

“Right now, my heart says that I should set an example to many youngsters who want to get into high level racing. If I, at my age, can get to do what I am doing, why not others who are much younger” he asks with his trademark gentle smile.

Bad back, great future
An Interview given by Ajith Kumar during 1999 to rediff.com

Ajith Kumar's career as an actor looks more like the Sensex graph now. It goes high and then suddenly tumbles down to near anonymity.

He became the most sought after actor in Tamil after the stupendous success of Aasai. Kaadal Kottai also grossed a lot of money. Just when he seemed all ready to fly, his career hit turbulence in the form of a string of flops, including a much-hyped ABCL film.

As Ajith's market began slipping, another young actor, Vijay, surged ahead to take his place. People in the Tamil film industry had almost written Ajith off. And then came his new film, Vaali (with Simran) and Ajith is back again in the reckoning. It is considered as one of the biggest hits in recent times, perhaps bigger than even Rajnikant's Padayappa.

And ahead lies Amarkkalam with Shalini, his 25th film. The young man has indeed come a long way.

Ajith was undergoing physiotherapy for his recurrent back problem at the Apollo hospital when Shobha Warrier met him. Sophisticated, cultured, well-mannered, yet impulsive and frank, she found the young star easy to chat with.

You are from a non-filmi family. How did you get interested in films?

I dropped out of school after my tenth standard. But both my elder brother and younger brother are highly educated. My elder brother is a cost analyst in New York and my younger brother is a B Tech in naval architecture from IIT, Madras. At present, he is doing research at the University of Michigan.

But I, the middle one, was not into academics at all. I would not say I was not interested in studies -- it just wasn't there in me to pursue academics. I would open a page in the textbook and start thinking about everything under the sun except what was there in the book. I was more into extra-curricular activities and sports like NCC, rifle shooting, aero-modelling, bike racing etc.

Even now, I don't read anything other than the newspapers, Reader's Digest or National Geographic. I don't want to put up this act of being a voracious reader, which I am not.

So your parents might have been very disappointed with you.

No, no. I was very good at whatever I chose to do. I played cricket for my school. Because I dropped out of school, I could not pursue cricket or NCC or anything connected with schools and colleges, further. I had to put an end to all such interests.

Do you regret the decision?

No, not at all. I was on my own after my school days itself. After my school, I worked as an apprentice with Enfield and got a diploma. From there, I moved on to garment exports. But modelling and bike racing were my favourite hobbies then. I pursued motor racing with more passion, as I wanted to be a professional motor racer.
Now motor racing is picking up and you have people like Narain Karthikeyan doing so well. But when I was racing back in 1989, it was considered only as a hobby. Because it was expensive and sponsors were hard to get, I could not take it up very seriously. I used to finish fifth and sixth at the all-India level. Still, I didn't get any sponsors. I guess it is the timing. You have to be at the right place at the right time. I was not there at the right time.

Ahead of time?

I think so (laughs). But then nobody approached me with sponsorship and I didn't approach anyone either, as I was a fiercely independent person. People thought I did not need any help, as I always looked confident. Even if I needed help very badly, I would not show it.

Egotistic?

No, no. I would say, I was fiercely independent. There is a very thin line between confidence and arrogance. I was very confident which was misconstrued as arrogance most of the time. But I can't help it, can I?

Did motor racing give you the excitement you sought?

Of course, of course. The split second decisions excite you a lot. Everything happens so fast in the race. Adrenaline is flowing all the time with people cheering you loudly. And, when you are on the bike, you forget everything. May be because of my character, I could relate to the sport very well.

If given a choice, what would you opt for, motor racing or films?

To be honest, motor racing. That was what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a professional motor racer. It was only due to lack of sponsors that I could not do it.

Do you take decisions fast in real life too?

Yes, I guess the ability to take decisions fast has helped me a lot.

Was it a difficult journey?

It was and it still is. The journey had been very difficult not only in films but in the other jobs too. I worked with a garment exporter for four and a half years, then quit to start a textile-processing agency. And then I lost a lot of money in the business. And I was only 20 when I started this business. I was racing and modelling too then. Do you know all the money that I got from my modelling assignments was pumped into buying spare parts for my bike, helmet, etc?

It was then that I got an offer from Poornachandra Rao of the famous Lakshmi Production company to act in a film. They had seen some of my ads. That was how my first film, Amaravati, happened. But first film was shelved in between because of the director's death.

Were you excited when you were called to act in films?

Like any other normal person, I too was nervous. I wasn't excited at all, as there were a lot of other things, like clearing the debts that I had incurred in garment exports. I took to films only to make some money so that I could pay off all the debts that I had.

When did you start looking at acting as a profession?

Till my sixth film, Aasai, I did not even think of continuing in films. I just wanted to clear my debts so that I could start my business all over again. After Aasai became a big hit, I thought, 'This time I am not going to let it go'. See, I tried to pursue NCC, I couldn't. Next came cricket. That also did not happen. Then, motor racing. I couldn't do whatever I wanted to. But I met with a very serious accident after my first film. And that put an end to motor racing too, my passion.

Was it a racing accident?

Yes, it was a racing accident. A week before my race, we had a practice session and I had a very nasty fall. I injured my back and I had to undergo three major surgeries on my back. I was in bed for one-and-a-half years.

It must have been very traumatic for you.

It was. But I was always a gutsy person. I had always been a fighter in life. I never got anything on a platter; I had to fight for everything in life, even when I was working, racing and acting in films. It has always been a big struggle for me.

Do you know what happened during the shooting of my first film?

The director of my first film died in front of me and the film was shelved. I was only 20 then. You can say I have seen it all by the time I was 20. Finally when my first film got released, I was in bed after the race accident and I had to be in bed for one-and-a-half years. Those were very depressing days.

What did you do to climb out of it?

Work, work and work. Once I started walking again, K Subhash called and offered me Pavitra with Nasser and Radhika. That changed the course of my life to a certain extent. After Pavitra, Aasai happened, and after Aasai, Kathal Kottai came...

After Kaathal Kottai your films flopped one after another. What was the reason? Wrong choice of films or bad luck?

Yes, it was a very bad time for me after Kaathal Kottai. I was perhaps the only hero in Indian cinema, I think, to have given five consecutive flops in a year. None of my five films ran for more than two weeks in any theatre! Is it not a record of flops after the huge success of Aasai and Kaathal Kottai ? :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

I tell the truth. And I know what I'm talking about. That's why I'm a threat. - Snoop Dogg

You must have felt terrible.

Terrible. It was very, very demoralising too. Then I went through a very bad relationship, a relationship of three-and-a-half years. I am out of it now. So, a lot of things happened to me, both personally and professionally and those things shaped me, made me grow as a human being, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. It was traumatic for me, profession-wise, health-wise and relationship-wise.

It was and still is very difficult to come to terms with all that. I still have not yet taken control of myself and accepted reality. I don't know whether I should describe my feeling as 'depressing'. But sometimes I feel, things happened too fast for me. I guess I have the experience of a 40-year-old.

My problems did not end there. I had one more back surgery in November 1998 and then in January 1999 too. I started shooting for Vaali and Unnai Thedi immediately after the surgery. So, work helped me get out of all those problems to some extent. If not for my work, I would have gone haywire.

Do you look at work as an escape route from all your problems?

Yes, I was escaping from all the bad experiences through work. Just to forget all that, I worked. But today I enjoy my work. It is no longer an escape route for me. I enjoy my work so much that I try to be a part of all that is concerned with a film. I think I can be a good technician too now. My suggestions are accepted and appreciated by directors now.

The Star Next Door
Interview given by Ajith Kumar to rediff.com during 1997

When the prestigious ABCL banner went scouting through the roster of southside stars looking for a lead actor for its debut venture in Tamil, industry watchers played their guessing games on which icon the banner would sign up. Kamal Hassan? Rajnikanth? Chiranjeevi? Nagarjuna? Arjun?
Would you believe, Ajith Kumar?

"I happened to be in the right place at the right time," the hottest new star on the southern block says, with a shrug and a smile.
The tall, good-looking young man is remarkably blase about the fact that, in the words of the famous quote, "He awoke one morning and found himself famous". And even a series of three hits, and a spate of film offers following in the wake of the publicity his being signed by ABCL generated, hasn't impacted on his laidback, take-it-easy persona.

His attitude to his success, and new-found celebrity status, is reflected nowhere as vividly as in his own thoughts on a variety of questions. Thus:

On Aasai, the Mani Rathnam production which marked the directorial debut of award-winning cinematographer P C Sriram and went on to become a mammoth grosser at the box office: "That film worked for two reasons. Prakash Rai(right) was brilliant as the villain, and every song was an instant hit, all of them made it to the top of the charts one after another. Besides, the storyline was unusual, so the film became a huge hit. The fact that I was the hero had nothing to do with it!"

About the increasingly high profile he has attained, after following up that first hit with another and being signed by ABCL for its debut venture: "I guess this period is my honeymoon with the marquee. Honeymoons are great, but they don't last. And I think the same is true with success on the screen - today I am all over the place, tomorrow I may be gone, I may have to make room for someone else. So why make a big song and dance about it all?"

This attitude, the more one examines it, seems typical of a new breed of film artist making it big on a marquee earlier dominated by the 'superstars' of the order of Sivaji Ganesan and the late M G Ramachandran, Kamal Hassan and Rajnikanth. This emerging brand of 'hero' is typically young and fresh-faced, well educated, from cosmopolitan middle and upper middle class backgrounds, and inclined to bring to their celluloid careers a professionalism and clear-headedness that strips away the hype and makes of showbiz another career - albeit a high-paying, and glamorous, one.

Ajith's bio exemplifies this breed. Born to a Sindhi mother and Malayalee father as the middle son of three, he laughingly describes himself as the dunce in the family. "My two brothers excelled in academics and are now working abroad, I was the family dunce, dropped out in Class X from Asan Memorial High School (in central Madras). I guess I was more into extra-curricular activities - NCC, trekking, loved motorbikes.

"I guess it was my dad who hauled me back to reality, he said it was time I made something of myself. So since I liked motorbikes, I first became an apprentice at Enfield India, then I tried my hand at the textile business, basing myself in Erode, for a spell."
In this phase, however, his clean-cut features had already won him some modelling assignments, for both print and television. And his spare time was spent racing motorbikes - his one enduring passion. This daredevil streak, however, resulted in a broken vertebra, which he neglected at the time and which was to erupt in pain later, while doing a risky stunt for one of his films.

Around this time he wound up his textile business, and accepted a role in a Telugu film, Prema Pusthakam. The debut was, in his own words, a "disaster". And his first film inTamil, Amaravathi,"did only marginal business, though the songs were chartbusters and got me some measure of notice."

Ajith was becoming increasingly familiar to television viewers partly because of the hit songs from his Tamil debut, partly because of television ads shot by the likes of P C Sriram.

One of those ads was for the company headed by film-star Revathi's husband Suresh Menon and his appearance in it earned him a small role in Menon's own productions, Paasamalargal and Rajaavin Paarvayile.

'It was the rushes of these two films that persuaded the Mani Rathnam-Sriram combine to sign him on for the former's home production Aasai(left). And when Ajith followed it up with Vanmathi, another mega-grosser, and a standout performance in a secondary role in Kalluri Vaasal starring Pooja Bhatt and Prashant in the lead, it was perhaps inevitable that ABCL's choice would fall on him as the most promising of the emerging breed of young actors.

Today Ajith boasts an enviable fan following, especially among the teenybop, young collegian crowd - despite not being billed as either a fighting or a dancing star. "I love doing stunts, though I have to be careful with my back. As for dances, somehow I am uncomfortable doing them. I lack grace," he grins. And when you point out that in his brief career, he has already had over six songs that have topped all the charts, the grin broadens into a laugh and he goes, "Yeah, that's the funny thing about this industry, the strangest thing can, and sometimes do, happen."

Which, I think, must be about the first time I ever heard a star view his own enormous popularity as an example of showbiz "quirks". And Ajith promptly shatters another of my illusions - that every star, asked why he is in cinema, will use the query as a cue to spout sanctimonious stuff about "artistic aspirations... a deep love for acting... the passion to create..." and suchlike - by saying, "I am in movies basically for the money and, frankly, I have a hard time believing those who say that act for the love of acting!"

Having said that, Ajith - like any other committed professional in any other field - has a desire to be, if not the best, at least to be good enough to be rated among the front-runners. "Acting is a learning process," he says serioulsy. "And what you are doing in your early films is essentially picking up the nuances, the tricks of your trade. And somewhere along the line, you become analytical, and learn to enjoy what you are doing. Essentially, though, I see myself as a director's medium - he needs something from me, I deliver it."

When talk veers to his fan following - love letters from girls, inscribed on their hankies in their own blood, are a common offering in his mailbox - Ajith sighs. "I wish people wouldn't equate screen heroes with demigods," he says, adding that such extreme adulation both frightens, and saddens, him. "I do respond, in all sincerity, to the letters I get - but there is some discomfort. And I try not to let the adulation go to my head, because for one thing it is not exactly encouraging - imagine the enormous pressure it puts on you to know how much people expect from you! And for another, it is so very ephemeral - today I am everyone's darling, tomorrow that same Everyone has moved on to a newer, fresher star....

"For my part, I think it would help to restore a sense of balance if the screen hero were to be true to life, to have flaws and plus points and stand tall on feet of clay. It's like my role in Aasai(left) - not at all the all-conquering 'hero' of the marquee. My character was romantic, but he was human, he was as insecure as only a man in love can be, an angry, mixed up youngster, idealistic to an extreme and yet helpless to realise his ideals. I loved that character."

Asked to describe himself, Ajith avoids the subject of his looks - 'clean cut' being the most obvious description I can come up with here - and prefers to concentrate on his personality. "I am a restless sort of chap, full of a frenetic, sort of directionless, energy," he smiles. "And yes, I am very religious." Proof of this latter being in the way he, soon after recovering from surgery for his broken vertebra, walked the many hundreds of miles from his home in Madras to the famed Balaji shrine in Tirupathi, in Andhra Pradesh, in fulfillment of a vow. "Losing every sensation in my legs was frightening," he says, when asked why he took so arduous a vow.

Ajith is busy shooting for Ullaasam, the ABCL debut venture to be directed by the upcoming pair of JD & Jerry, with music by Ilayaraja's son Karthik, which pairs him opposite no less than Sridevi's cousin, Maheshwari. "I was very surprised - pleasantly surprised - to get that offer," he adds with a smile. "And even more so by the money they offered me," he laughs, while refusing to divulge the exact number of zeroes on his paycheck.

"I can't talk about that movie right now, we aren't supposed to discuss it yet," smiles the young star. Ask him about his previous heroine, the Bollywood star Pooja Bhatt, and Ajith is back to his down to earth, candid self. "See, North Indian girls tend to be very fair... considerably fairer than the girls in the south. And that is one reason why our Tamil and Telugu producers are increasingly starring them in their films - Manisha Koirala, Urmila Matondkar, Pooja Bhatt, now Sushmita Sen... It's all part of this star fixation," Ajith muses. "The frontbenchers here, they go to the theatre and see these north girls and they go, 'Hey, look at her, so fair and nice...'

"Having said that, I must add that Pooja was great fun to work with. A shade aloof at first, but later on we became good friends. She doesn't have any starry airs, nor does she put on hauteur about being the daughter of the famous Mahesh Bhatt. Very down to earth and friendly and fun..."

Ask him about his own favourite stars, and Ajith reverts for a moment to your typical young man as he talks of his admiration for Aamir Khan, for Madhuri Dixit and Kajol. "At some stage," he adds, "I would like to do a Hindi film - after all, I'm half north Indian, my mother is a Sindhi and the Hindi language is not alien to me, so I'd like to give it a shot."

For the time being, though, he is busy shooting almost round the clock for Ullaasam, the schedules for which received a set back when the technicians of the Tamil film industry struck work for almost a month. And in whatever time remains to him, living the life of a typical young lad next door and successful professional.

"Hey, I love to go out," he grins. "Getting mobbed is a bit of a problem, but then I try and be very normal when I am out, no dark glasses and starry ways. Love riding my bike, and I guess the fact that I act so normally has resulted in the public giving me the space I want. Getting recognised is a nice feeling, but I am very particular about my space, I think I'm a pretty private sort of guy!"

Yeah, right - a private, down to earth guy who, just by a quirk of fate, happens to have his face, blown up several dozen times, plastered across the skyline of the film-crazy state of Tamil Nadu...

A for attitude
Old interview given by Ajith Kumar to The Hindu - Published in The Hindu dt. 24.11.2003

Charismatic and confident. That's Ajith for you. He talks to M. ALLIRAJAN & SUBHA J RAO about his passion for car racing and how he has changed as a person.

HE HAS essayed double roles with finesse in his movies. People are waiting with bated breath to see if he can pull it off in real life as well. Ajith Kumar, who has made a mark as a good performer on screen, is now straddling the twin fields of movies and motor racing. Is it possible to do justice to both careers?

"It is difficult to concentrate on two highly demanding professions. But, I was into racing long before I started acting in movies. I am able to space time between the two," he says unfazed.

Though Ajith has been racing for more than a decade now, it was his performance in the Formula BMW Asia Championship 2003, held in Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Korea and China, that reaffirmed his confidence. Ajith, who was into bike racing, gave it up after a minor accident and lack of sponsors.

With Kodambakkam sending out feelers, he opted to don the greasepaint before his first love beckoned again.

Now that he has achieved a "moderate level of success" in his movie career, Ajith has decided to limit himself to two releases a year. Not just because of motor racing. "I thought about it a long time back. But I was not in a position to enforce my wish."

Are producers apprehensive about casting him, given the risk involved in racing?

"Tell me," he says pausing for effect: "is there any field without risk?" "All my surgeries, and I have undergone many, have been due to accidents during shooting. I do understand that people feel I am racing for a fancy. There is a lot of negative talk about my racing. But, I am not forcing anybody to sign me on. Producers who find me risky can stay off," he tells curtly.

"I have always worked with people whom I know personally. My producers understand my passion for the sport. They also understand how it will help the film's business."

"People in the countries I have raced in are familiar with my name. When they know I am an actor, they will be interested in watching my movies. At present, only Tamilians watch Kollywood movies in Malaysia, Thailand and Japan. My being a racer can open up a new marker for our films," he believes.

With racing being a very expensive sport, how does he manage? "For the Formula BMW Asia Championship, I spent close to Rs. 90 lakhs. One of my producers is helping me out. I am crying out loud for sponsors and have written to corporates to no avail," he rues.

He is now off to Britain for testing for the British F 3 Scholarship Class Championship.

Most of his movies have been with up and coming directors. Is there any special reason? "There was a time when I wanted to work with big names and banners. I never got any offers then." As for public perception that he is high-headed, he asserts: "People who have met me even once will not come to such a conclusion. There is a thin line between arrogance and confidence. I am an extremely confident person. What's wrong in that?" he asks. ARM's Ghajini dialogue seems to be inspired from this. :P

"I don't have an attitudinal problem. I just carry an attitude."

"Stop being judgmental about people whom you have never met," he tells tersely. Quiz him further and he says: `Ok. Let me clarify things once and for all. I am like a mirror. Smile at me and I will smile back. If you scowl, that's what you will get from me."

His stereotypical macho roles have been drawing a lot of flak. Why does he continue doing them when he is capable of so much more? "Don't blame me for this. My best film after Vaali was Mugavari. Though it ran for 100 days, the producer did not get the expected returns. The entertainment industry is similar to the hospitality industry. You can only give what people want," he explains.

"Anyway, those who said Kandukondain Kandukondain was an excellent movie were people who did not come to theatres. I won't do movies for them.

But, I will not blame them. People from the middle class will not think of taking their families to theatres. The toilets are stinking. Something needs to be done about maintaining theatres," he says.

As for the string of bad releases he has had, Ajith explanation is this: "Every good story teller need not be a good director. The same holds true vice-versa. I took on certain movies because they sounded good when they were narrated to me. It is difficult to judge if a good story teller will turn out to be a good director."

Ajith likens his bad times to that of racer. "My plight is like that of a good racer who is let down by a breakdown. What can I do if the script fails?" he asks.

His critics in the industry have torn him to shreds in recent times. How does he feel about the diatribes?

"People have called me a temporary actor. But, I know my best is yet to be tapped. Earlier, I did not know who was saying these things. Now, I know and am waiting for sweet revenge," he says his eyes blazing with anger.

Has this yearning for retaliation changed him as a person? "Of course," he says wistfully. "Time was when I was a very `nice' person, when I valued emotions. Small things mattered. Like sitting by the window enjoying the manvaasanai. Today, I am setting goals and waiting to avenge my detractors."

After reading these interviews, I think all Ajith Fans would have got answers for the queries in the last thread. :)

Ajith's next for Sivaji Films:

The first film of Ajith for Sivaji Flms 'Aasal' took a bumper opening when it was released in February. Ajith was appreciated for his style and acting in the film. But how ever the film did not do that well as one had expected.

So Ajith has offered to do another film for Sivaji Films. Meeting Prabhu recently Ajith has said he will do the film after finishing his next project with Gautham Menon for Dhayanidhi Alagiri.

Touching news here is that Ajith will do this film for Sivaji Films at a substantially reduced remuneration. Ajit's kind gesture has moved Prabhu to the hilt.

Ajith Kumar - An Environmentalist

Dr.Norman Borlaug, the father of India’s Green Revolution once quoting “Man seems to insist on ignoring the lessons available from history” with respect to how the present age human tend to neglect the consequences of ignoring nature and humanity.

Its not gonna be tough for us to relate this to Mr. Ajith Kumar, an actor, a Car racer and in this context, an Environmentalist. The actor truly beleives in respecting the world around him and the world he is in. Admist his busy schedule and family commitments which everyone of us are bound to , Ajith spends good amount of time towards making his environment eco-friendly , clean and green.

Tree plantation, subtle marketing favoring green and clean environment through his movies are regular activities through which he makes the world know the importance of leading a hygenic and healthy life and also being nice to the planet which we are in.

Ajith is clever, he knows the best mode of transmitting his thoughts to the public. Wanna know how he does. Almost every Ajith fan who meets the actor would be preached and requested to be a part of this Green revolution. (Green revolution is not just planting trees, saving our planet from famine, taking care of the food needs, healthy nutrition and more comes under Green Revolution).

Not to miss , Ajith is the founder of a non-profit organisation “Mohini-Mani Foundation” named after his parents in order to promote and educate people about self-hygiene and civic consciousness. Through this organisation, the actor has great plans to promote Green revolution .

Ajith is also the Brand Ambassador of Green revolution. This says all about the actor’s humanity and commitment towards the society .

On a eco-friendly drive

Actor Ajit pet cause now is protecting the environment

AFTER A fairly successful stint with motor racing, actor Ajit’s pet project now is meeting his fans and spreading the message of eco-conservation.

He has been traversing the State systematically, covering entire districts and ensuring that at least some of his fans go back enlightened on the need to plant more trees and segregate waste at home.

In Coimbatore to meet his fans in this region, he spent a whole 12 hours shaking hands with them and handing out pamphlets that detail the need to protect Mother Earth.

His fans are not complaining. Many waited for hours to meet him, even foregoing lunch in the process. And, shaking hands? Well, that is their idea of heaven.

Ajit played the perfect host, making every fan feel comfortable, walking up to talk to those physically challenged and trying his best to make them forget their disability for a while.

Maadhu, a middle-aged woman who cannot walk, crawled her way up to the Ramakrishna Kalyana Mandapam to meet her dream hero. Students from Mettupalayam, who skipped school to attend the programme, said they would go back and plant trees if that is what `He’ wanted them to do.

Actor Ajith’s greening drive

RESIDENTS of the First and Second Seaward Road in Tiruvanmiyur were surprised to notice someone, who is neither a politician nor a local leader, planting saplings in all the roads a fortnight ago.

A closer look revealed it was matinee idol, Ajith.

A resident of Valmiki Nagar, the Kollywood star, along with his father, mother and wife, planted 100 saplings in the four Seaward roads in the area.

M.B. Nirmal, founder president, Exnora, said the actor’s parents have been members of Exnora for over a decade and had contributed a lot to greening efforts in Norton Road, Mandaveli.

Ajith says deforestation was causing a lot of problems and he wanted to educate the people on issues concerning the environment.

“It’s time we started paying attention to issues relating to the environment such as tree planting and segregating garbage, which has to be taken up at the grassroots level,” he says.

The actor has also asked members of his fans’ association to take up sapling planting work seriously.

With the help of his fans’ association, the actor proposes to plant at least 1 lakh saplings annually throughout the State.

[tscii:552caba9e0]Few more things about Ajith

How did Ajith get acting chance?

He was approached by the director Selva in a fuction he went to with a friend. He started acting as soon as the next day in “Amaravathi”

The first scene he acted in

It was a scene in which he had to stand near the “Thiruvalluvar” bus stop of Chennai in the rain!

His strengths

I seriously doubt VP's skills when it comes to single hero movies.. :-(

I trust VP is capable of pulling it off.

P.S I don't want VP compromise the script for Ajith. I think Ajith lets him do what he is at best. :)

Its an established fact that Ajith is a mass hero. Mass hero does not only mean that he has to do movies to satisfy the masses but an actor with huge fan following. Coming out of the trap is very difficult...

Ajith to team up with Sivaji Productions again?
Ambili [May 18, 2010, 10:12:25 PM]

After the awesome opening for Thala Ajith's recent release Aasal, actor-producer Prabhu now wants to make another film with Ajith. Reports suggest that Sivaji Productions has expressed their interest to produce another Ajith movie and the actor has responded positively. If all goes well, Ajith will team up with Sivaji Production for his 51st film.

Meanwhile, Ajith is getting ready for his 50th film with ace director Gautham Menon. Produced by Dhayanidhi Alagiri, the film, believed to be a police story, will have one more highlight: music by the Mozart of Madras, A.R. Rahman. The Rahman-Gautham duo has already proved their magic in Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa recently. There are reports that this venture is tentatively titled Kaaval.

[tscii:0d474d000e]Ajith – On and Off-Screen

Off-Screen

He’s hot. He’s not! Ajith has always attracted more attention for his off-screen activities than his on-screen performance. Even after almost two decades, Ajith Kumar today has not lost his appeal and those who aspire to be an actor are ready to follow him with total devotion and dedication. Whatever be the present status of Ajith, it has to be admitted that his achievements since become an actor have not been small either. No assessment made can be wholly black or white. There are many grey areas. To be blind to what has been achieved by him and see only the dark side of things will give a lopsided picture. The view that Ajith the actor is much better off now than he was when Amaravathi came. However many questions still remain and it is only proper for his well-being in the cinefield that he find answers to them. Has he, for instance, done enough? Couldn’t he has done better? Is what he has achieved all that could have been pushed through? Aren’t there some actors who has done even better than him? When he try to find answers to these questions, the analysis will yield a great deal for all of us to ponder over.

According to me as well as many, the reason for his phenomenal success and tremendous popularity is his charming smile. I can even say that his smile has been worth a million dollar. His captivating smile is his particular ability, which makes people open their hearts out to him. His smile is sincere and heartfelt. His sincere smile creates a ready trust on the part of others.

For the fans, Ajith Kumar is epitome of success. He has achieved so much in his career and is still humble and outspoken. There is nothing surprising about Ajith’s status. He will continue to inspire his fans. Cinefield today is not merely a business. It is a maddeningly serious business. And like most businesses in a global laissez faire setup, it seldom shows any sympathy for those who fail at the foothills or fail midway in the daunting climb. If cinefield does have a heart, then very few people would claim to have seen it in a decade or two.

In this modern era, he is the gem of a man who is living with honour. In his life many times, he has taken courageous stands to resolve challenges rather than prolong indecisions. In a sense, his life in modern days is a GPS. His life describes the tools we will need for a honourable living and offers direction for living with pride. His honourable living is about accomplishment rather than achievement. His honour and honourable living has many dimensions. His individual, professional and social dimensions are interconnected and influence each other. He is living with dignity as well as he is worthy of respect. For living with dignity he has a sense of fairness, empathy and integrity. In his life, he found himself in situations where his ethical standards were put to test. When faced with such situations, he has never compromised his esteem and truth is always behind him. This in turn, enhanced his self-esteem, made it tougher for him to compromise his values the next time round. His character becomes tougher. Consistency is value-based behaviour and it leads to reliability. His character is about integrity, honesty, ethics, conscience, loyalty, mental toughness, courage and consistency. These are all a composite of qualities and certainly not a commodity. So he cannot sell his conduct because it is purely about honour. His integrity cannot be measured by his status or profession but by his conduct alone. He is a one man army because of his integrity. Good leaders believe strongly in making integrity a way of life. He has enough courage to practise integrity.

Loyalty is the hallmark of Ajith in the same way as a tree is as strong as its roots. In Mahabharata, Dharmaputra decided that he lived his life completely on earth and he was now ready for heaven along with his four brothers and his wife Panchali. A faithful dog followed them in the journey which was long and too tough. By the time, Dharmaputra arrived at the gates of heaven his wife and brothers had fallen by the way. At the gate Dharamputra was invited to enter through the gates but he refused to enter heaven without his family. Lord Indra then explained that his family had already arrived and awaited him. On the verge of accepting the invitation, Dharmaputra realized that the dog was not permitted to accompany him and he was determined not to leave the dog which had followed him with such loyalty. When Lord Indra asked him to explain his decision, Dharmaputra replied that he could not betray the faithful and loyal dog which followed him all the way. Lord Indra was pleased with his reply and as it turned out, it was ‘Dharma’ who wanted to test Dharmaputra. Similar to the epic, Ajith had backed up the FEFSI, a decade ago.

Integrity and justice without courage is useless, just as courage without integrity and justice is oppression. He is

· Bold but not bully,
· Humble but not apologetic,
· Confident but not conceited,
· Proud but not arrogant,
· Strong but not rude,
· Firm but not stubborn,
· Detached but not indifferent.

Discipline. A good word. An even better quality in a human being. Without it, the society lives will come crashing down. If each and everyone is indisciplined there will be chaos. The peculiar thing about discipline is that it is easier to talk about it than to observe it. Many would like to enforce it strictly on others. However, very few would like to enforce it strictly on themselves like our Ajith.

On-Screen

All conquering hero or a big zero

The photographers flocked around him. The media followed him. He came with a performance that made him the favourite. He knew all the others in the fray would be gunning for the top slot among current generation. This is what has been happening ever since Vaali. The problem with Ajith is you don’t know what to expect. You thought he was back in the hunt with Varalaaru and Billa. In Ajith’s case, disasters always followed success. Disastrous Alwar and Aegan were followed immediately after those big hits. And finally Asal came and gone soon. Ajith unable to recapture his Billa Magic at BO, as his Asal failed to evoke great response. So where does this leave Ajith? Where does he go from here?

Since Varalaaru and Kireedom, Ajith has done very little to match his status as one of the dazzling performers in the white rectangle. For a man who struggled to piece his commercial act together in the Box Office, the success of Billa over two years ago was expected to be a big booster, something that would launch him towards his goal of becoming the one of the best commercial heroes in the Tamil Film Industry.

Yet, here he is, 28 months from that December 2007, and unsure about far too many things in a business where uncertainty is punished at every turn. If his critics have always doubted his script selection, then Ajith’s 2008, 2009 and 2010 Box Office record has contributed very little to win over the skeptics. On the other hand, the millions of Ajith fans would like to believe that 2008, 2009 and 2010 was no more than usual aberration…. that the heroic performer would pull himself together and make a bold charge to the top slot among current generation in 2011. To the fans, in a glamour industry that is far too short on personalities now, Ajith is something of an icon.

We should always remember the message of Gita, which seems to be fits the bill perfectly for Ajith.

“Raise yourself by yourself; you are your own friend; you are your own enemy. When you discipline the energy, then you become your own friend and friend of others too; when you do not control your mind, you become your own enemy and the enemy of the society as well”.

So finally, at either end, the reactions are typical and predictable. For Ajith is that kind of person – he triggers responses that are either unmercifully negative or positive fawning. He is at once a charming, all conquering hero and a big boring zero – the perception merely depends on your point of view.[/tscii:0d474d000e]

[tscii:c54bfa23df]Hindi VTV in August

Generally, Gautham Menon’s films will be made in different languages with some stuff in it. He had proved it once again with the recent release of his ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya’ (VTV) in Tamil and its Telugu version ‘Ye Maya Chesave’.

Now, the director is on plans to make VTV in Hindi which is to be produced by Ambika Hinduja and will have all the newcomers in the lead.

Gautham, who is enjoying the summer by taking a short break from the films, says “I am eagerly waiting for June 18 to watch Mani Ratnam’s ‘Raavan’. I loved the songs and think it will be an amazing film”.

Sources say that Prateik Babbar, son of Raj Babbar is expected to play the role played by Simbu, while a new Mumbai girl will play Trisha’s role.

Gautham says “If all goes well, the Hindi version of VTV will start rolling from August with an all new star cast and AR Rahman’s music”

When he was asked about his film with Ajith for Dayanidihi Alagari Cloud Nine movies, he said “I have no news about it, for the last few months I have no contact with Ajith. At the moment my focus is on my Hindi VTV remake.”

Out of 9 races in Formula Two, Only 2 completed.

Monza, Italy hosts the next race from May 21..And Last race is scheduled in September.

Even if Ajith takes one month rest, the film can start only after November.. The question is Will GVM wait till November?

I feel even if GVM starts the hindi remake of VTV which i suppose will not happen(for eg:Kakka Kakka), he can finish before November.

The 50th film is definitely on with Ajith-GVM IMO.

Gautham goes to Bollywood!
By Moviebuzz | Thursday, 20 May , 2010, 10:58

His films speak a different language and he knows his stuff. Gautham hit the bull’s eye yet again with his last release Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya(VTV) in Tamil and its Telugu version Ye Maya Chesave.

But the soft spoken director is cool as ever and is chilling out at home taking a break from films. He says: “I am eagerly waiting for June 18 to watch Mani Ratnam’s Raavan. I loved the songs and think it will be an amazing film”.

Now the trend setting ace director is all set to go to Bollywood. He will be making his super hit rom-com VTV in Hindi for producer Ambika Hinduja and will have newcomers in the lead.

Prateik Babbar, son of Raj Babbar is likely to play the role made memorable by Simbu, while a new Mumbai girl will play Trisha’s role. Gautham Menon told sify.com: “If all goes well, the Hindi version of VTV will start rolling from August with an all new star cast and AR Rahman’s music”

When asked about his film with Ajith for Dhayanidhi Alagiri’s Cloud Nine, Gautham said: “ I have no news about it, for the last few months I have no contact with Ajith. At the moment my focus is on my Hindi VTV remake.”

We cant trust them fully, but, this one seems like truly told by him... Lets see, yethavathu magazine-la interview kodupparu, appo theriyamala poyidum...

Once GM starts his Hindi VTV, it will drag for sure. Meanwhile, Ajith will be back and ready on October. Since director is busy, producer without wasting call-sheet, will scout for another director. Perhaps Saran or Raju Sundram alikes and there you go... Another 'amara kAviyam' like Aasal.

Good to see that Thala improving race after race and he has finished 15th....

but has anybody really gone through the result sheet, compare the timing and the how many not classified etc etc...

thala has come 15th out of a 16 people classified and out of a total of 21 racers, 5 have not been classified.

also look at the timings....thala is lagging behind 3 to 4 seconds whereas other racers have a difference of fraction of a second...

I don't mean to discourage thala....but lets understand where thala stands and what huge a competition it is.

Kudos to Thala to have been involved in such a huge competing sport....

But at the same time let us try to understand ourselves...what if a person come 1st out a total of 21 racers and out of which 20 have been not classified let alone the 1st person. Its a washout race.

Do you all remember such a wasout of races which happened last to last year when there were only 5/6 racers classified out of a total of 20 racers in Formula One (F1) racing....where KingFisher from India, Force India could collect points for the first time...

Leo bro,
From thala's interview and the concluded race results, I think thala wants to complete all the laps instead of attmepting to speed up and breakdown in the middle. Checkout his speed. But, this is understandable as thala is new to this serious racing, out of touch and others involved are pro's. So far he has completed all the laps in all the races. This itself is very good. I guess thala's idea for this season is get used to vehicle, tracks, track conditions et all and get into serious business from next season. Well, I thought this would be one time affair, but it seems thala has some long term plans

well parthy, i'l put it this way, he has lost interest being in this industry seeing how it functions than "lost interest in films"...going by the recent events and some of the past ones, maybe he feels wronged by his own peers in many ways! that an honest/upright/non-diplomatic man like him is a misfit in this industry is a fact, and it might be bugging him that he is the odd one out, so his frequent visits to the racing track (not forgetting that it is his real passion!) which gives him total enjoyment....

regarding selection of dirs and missing out on prominent ones, everyone goes thru this cycle...and it's worth remembering that ajith did not reach where he did by doing the so-called "great" director's films, so the only thing he has to do is select a good script and an able director and not necessarily the gouthams, mani sirs, etc...no harm in doing these guys' films tho :) !

and if it's loss of confidence as some feel here, he doesn't need to look at his previous gud movies, he just needs to check out his 3 songs to say to himself that he BELONGS here! till then, let him do what gives him peace and enjoyment as he mentioned...GVM, Mani sir and all can wait :D !

Jinju,
I know what u have said.
Man can make mistake but not too often.what I am sayiny dont do series of crap movies like he said.

he can wait for GVM,get touch in and do the film rather than looking for other dirs in story selection.I am not against his passion but he needs to know nuance of film making, what is good film.rather than only being loyal to producer.

For Ajith's age he can maximum race for another 3-5 years, for that too he needs huge amount to participate. Atleast for that he will definitely do a movie per year. After 3-5 years again he has to concentrate only on films.
After 40 years he is living his passion, not many can live like that. Let him enjoy every moment of it.
Great racer like Micheal schumacher after announced his comeback from 3 years break is struggling in F1 and getting 12th position, Such an intense game it is.
With 6 years break from international racing and with his first appearance in F2, Ajith manages to achieve 14th, 15th position, which is truly amazing. Even if we don't encourage also no prob but shouldn't discourage him.

Ajith makes a mark:

Ajith Kumar had an eventful Race 1 at Monza for the Round 5 of the F2 Championship on May 22. Qualifying at P20 out of 21 drivers, Ajith completed the race in 14th position with his personal best lap time of 1:46.500.

Says Ajith, "I feel proud and privileged to race amongst some of the best drivers in the championship, especially our own country's Armaan Ebrahim and Parthiva Sureshwaran. I am thrilled to be racing on this excellent circuit in Monza, Italy and am happy that I have completed the race in 14th Position. I hope to do better in Round 6."

In Race 2 on May 23, Ajith Kumar started at P20 and finished the race at 15th place with a personal best lap time of 1:46.211. Says Ajith, "I had a perfect race this time without getting involved in any incidents. I maintained my pace throughout the race and managed to not get lapped. At the end of this weekend, I can say that the overall exercise was very productive and I am confident of doing much better in the forthcoming rounds."

Shocking news

Ajith in Chennai
IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, May 26, 2010]

After successful participation in the first three rounds of Formula 2 races at Silverstone, Marrakech and Monza, Ajith Kumar is on a short break in Chennai. The next race is at Zolder in Belgium on June 19 and 20.

The Official Formula 2 website, which carries updated profiles on all the drivers after each round, has this to say about the actor-racer:

Ajith Kumar - R1: 14th, R2: 15th

Ajith Kumar's consistency during a race weekend cannot be denied as he has now completed every round of the season - making up positions in each and every contest so far in 2010.

This weekend was no different as Ajith made his way from 20th to 14th in race one and from 21st to 15th in race two. The actor-racer has quickly become one of the most popular figures in the F2 paddock, as he races with a great amount of passion and always with a smile on his face.

Ajith said: "I feel proud and privileged to race amongst some of the best drivers in the championship, especially our own country's Armaan Ebrahim and Parthiva Sureshwaran. I am thrilled to be racing on this excellent circuit in Monza, Italy and am happy that I have completed the race in 14th Position."

Ajith Kumar - R1: 14th, R2: 15th
Kumar's consistency during a race weekend cannot be denied as he has now completed every round of the season - making up positions in each and every contest so far in 2010. I am thrilled to be racing on this excellent circuit in Monza, Italy and am happy that I have completed the race in 14th Position.

Yeah, I meant magazines actually. It doesn't matter. What I'm trying to say is instead of doing some ground work for his next film in this break, he will give interviews unnecessarily. Perhaps, keep in touch with GM??? Nope, he won't do that. Appadi senjA thAn nalla movies koduthuduvArE... Wake up Thala...

hmm...don't know if he is coming to chennai to have discussions with the director and producer.... lets keep our fingers crossed....

but let thala get enough time to relax so that when he starts for shooting...he will be more enthusiastic....we surely can see the success like in BILLA....

till then only thala pola varumaa....

I don't think it will happen. It's definately for family visit. Let me say this loud and clear. I don't mind GM not directing our 50th. After all, he's not the only good director.
As long as anyone from the poll do it, I will be happy. :)

Fancy Fanclubs For Our Heroes

The release of their hero's film is not less than a scared ceremony for these fans. Udhav Naig speaks to members of the various fan clubs and reveals how eccentric they can get.

Some film stars have unknowingly garnered so much adulation that for some of their fans they are everything that there is in this world.

Let's take a look at this story of 40-something Karthikeyan, a die-hard fan of Rajini Kanth for the last 30 years, who has been forking out money for all activities of his fan club. Here is a gist of what they actually do. Recently, Maapillai, an old Rajini Kanth flick was re released in Srinivasa theatre, for which, around 20 litres of milk and 200 coconuts were bought in for the celebration.

Karthikeyan unperturbed says, " Any thing for my thalaivar, I have been his fan for the last 30 years, and I will continue to be his fan. Money is not the big thing, Being his fan has given me the identity . I want to be his fan for ever," If you think that was weird, think about this crazy Kamal Hassan fan -Kirubakaran, working with a leading software firm in Chennai. Every Kamal Hassan release is a festival for Karan and he gets busy a week before its r e l e a s e. " We usually have at least 25 banners for our , for Dasavatharam we had around 55 banners from South Chennai Narpani Iayakkam along with Pal Abhishekam and 108 coconuts," he says.

Sekar, in his mid-forties, a Kamal Hassan fan, makes it a point to attend every public function that the actor attends, and he has shied away from getting married just to make sure that he could continue attending these functions.

Ever since his mom left him all alone in this world, Kumaresha has been a crazy fan of Ajith Kumar, he says, "I just met my Thala once at a restaurant and I couldn't speak anything. I started crying profusely, I just want to see him happy," His act bordering on irrationality and extreme love for Ajith is unparalleled, for, he made sure that he got married on the day Aasal released and not only that, he wanted to specifically marry a girl who was named Shalini.

Ilayathalabathy Vijay is not really far behind on fan following, with more than 35,000 fan clubs registered, he is on par with Ajith. Saravanan -An auto driver and a die-hard Vijay fan has the knack of getting noticed. When Vijay was honoured with a doctorate degree this man managed to drive his auto on 2 wheels to celebrate the occasion. "I like calling myself as the fan of Vijay, We fans have done so many good things in our fan club, like Annadhanam's, we have given sewing machines too" With almost every other star beginning to garner attention through their films with one eye on politics, there exists the need to revamp and organise their fan clubs.

Suresh Chandra, Convener of Ajith Narpani Mandram makes a stern point. " Ajith doesn't have any sort of political ambitions, so, we do not believe in collecting money from the fans. We try to use the manpower at our disposal and do something for the society like cleaning the hospitals, beaches etc." As far as interacting with the fans are concerned, Suresh Chandra feels that there is no need to keep interacting.

Saravanan thoughts resonate on the same lines "When the crowd is manageable Vijay sir shakes hands with us and clicks photographs, sometimes when the crowd is huge, he waves and goes away, you can't blame him," In south India, there are fan clubs for every body; some fans with orgasmic affiliation to heroines build temples for them. And it's a dream for every young actor to someday have number of rasigar mandram's running into thousands. For, the exponential increase of fan clubs will mean exponential increase of the star's popularity .

BM, your explanation sounds reasonable. But, this is the story we know roughly. We have no idea what actually happened/happening.
I think Ajith is quite firm in not thinking about films till tournament finishes... But, my question is after that??? Atleaset there should be a 'contact' between Ajith and GM. Thats shows Ajith's keenness and care towards 'his' profession. :)

Gautham Menon should be a very happy person. At a time when films are hopping to complete even 2 weeks in theatres, his Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa is marching towards 100th day and it is no mean job. Kudos to Gautham for accomplishing this task! After VTV, there were many speculations about his next project, the top one being his project with Ajith Kumar. Now that the ultimate star is busy in Europe with his racing, there is some kind of ambiguity about this project.

A reliable source revealed that it is confirmed that Gautham and Ajith would be starting their project in October, 2010 when Ajith will be relieved of his racing commitments. Currently Gautham is working on the script which would be ready by the time the project rolls in a couple of months. It is also expected that the interim period will witness Gautham completing his quickies. Till then its transit period for fans of Ajith and Gautham!
