[tscii:7f2eccdab2]Actor Silambarasan has completed the first schedule of Vaanam, which is a remake of Telugu blockbuster Vedam. Taking a break from this project, the actor has flown down to London for the shooting of his long-pending project Poda Podi. The Film is produced by Shanaya Telefilms in collaboration with Gemini Film Circuit
Vignesh Shiva, close friend of Silambarasan handles megaphone for this film. Veteran actor Sarath Kumar’s daughter Varalakshmi is making her debut with this film.

The filming was supposed to commence last year and didn’t happen due to adverse climatic conditions in Canada. Much before the situations could turn favorable; Simbu started his other project Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya with Gautham Menon.

Nirav Shah is handling the camera and Anthony is the editor. It’s worth mentioning that both Nirav Shah and Anthony are already working together in Silambarasan’s Vaanam.

Shobana back in Poda Podi
After a long break, actress Shobhana is making a comeback in Poda Podi, featuring Silambarasan and Varalakshmi Sarathkumar.

Shobhana plays a pivotal role of Varalakshmi's dance guru in the film.

In fact Shobhana is doing a Tamil film after a long break and she had accepted the role, as there is enough scope for her to showcase her dancing abilities.

Now the Poda Podi unit are shooting in Pondicherry. With this schedule, the talkie portion of this musical entertainer directed by debutant Vignesh Shiva will be complete.

Shiva is canning few important scenes which is a link to the 45 days London shoot in the story.

Now after the Pondy schedule, STR and Varu will be taking off to Spain for a song shoot and with that Poda Podi will be complete.

The music is by Dharan and the film is produced by Gemini Film Circuit. It will be STR's next release in August.

Debutant Vignesh Sivan has wielded the megaphone for this romantic musical entertainer and the new director is all happy for clearing the censors with U certificate and no cuts on November 9th. Sources close to Podaa Podi team said, “Censor board members are extremely pleased with the film. They even congratulated Vignesh Shivaa for directing a clean entertainer and showcasing STR as a good boy with no bad habits."

Varalakhsmy shines in Poda Podi- REDIFF

Young superstar STR aka Simbhu has returned with a breezy romantic entertainer, Poda Podi, produced by Hithesh Jabak and Gemini Film Circuit, and directed by Vignesh Shivan.

The film is a musical as well. It is more than just a run-of-the-mill youth flick.

Animation expert Arjun (STR), and dancer Nisha (Varu Sarathkumar) live in London with an uncle and aunt respectively. We discover their backgrounds, and understand what motivates them. We actually get invested enough in their stories to wonder what's going to happen next.

The love life of the couple enters a serious phase. They discuss their feelings, argue about what they want from life and run into problems. Nisha still wants to dance and enter the UK competition 'Let's Dance,' and make a career for herself.

Arjun suddenly discovers that he is, at bottom, a "Pachai Thamizhan" who believes that a woman's place is in the home (preferably the kitchen, but she has the freedom to walk from one room to another if she wants). Egos clash, fights erupt.

At this point the movie begins to meander somewhat from the interesting exploring of relationships among Tamils living outside India [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=india) ]. Nisha undergoes extreme mood-swings, and her arguments and anger are often justified. Arjun exhibits many of the traits of a chauvinist without being able to justify them.

If this were all, it would still be good. But the battle between two people who love each other swiftly descends into cinematic platitudes and chaos.

The humour in the sub-headings work and you still wait for the best but you're disappointed.

The best never happens. You feel that Nisha has some justification on her side, while Arjun continues to feel that 'good Tamil girls should stay at home.' And then they practice kuthu dances.

The last hour and the climax are so rip-roaringly silly that you're left wondering if you were really watching just one movie and not two or three different ones, all reaching heights of madness.

Poda Podi has been a long time in the making, and while STR is his usual flamboyant self, it's Varu who's the real show-stealer.

She comes across as a genuine, warm person, able and willing to accept those around her for themselves, and rattles off her dialogues with such spontaneity and charm that she wins you over right away.

Among a sea of heroines who simper and stumble their way through movies, she's refreshing; a perfect delight.

VTV Ganesh (as the uncle) is his usual humorous self, while Shobana [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=shobana) ] seems to have no clear role except as someone who dances occasionally.

Dharan's music seems to echo other musicians at several points, and though pleasant, doesn't really linger. Duncan Telford's cinematography is sparkling, especially in the Hong Kong Disneyland scenes, while Antony's editing is neat.
Points are undoubtedly due to Vignesh Shivan for trying to avoid the usual route of a romantic flick, and the dialogues are undoubtedly the movie's plus-point.

But you wish he'd actually carried the idea of a culture-clash through the film, instead of stopping it halfway, and riddling it with verbal punches and a cinematic ending.

"Poda Podi"-http://chennaionline.com/

When was the last time we saw a musical in Tamil ? With two versatile dancers in the lead the movie makes you travel alongside their rollercoaster lives. First things first. A pat on the back to the debutant director Vignesh Shivan for presenting a uber cool fast paced movie. I had no doubt in my mind that this was a movie made by an youngster and I wasn’t disappointed to learn that he is only 27 years .

I am not going to discuss the story in detail for you have to experience it . Though in terms of narration it had shades of this year's earlier hit “ Kathalil Sothappuvathu Eppadi” , the subject is totally different.

The film is narrated as the hero says in Seven episodes -seamlessly woven . Simbu in whatever name ( STR ) really rocks. The film opens with a wonderful number well choreographed and effortlessly executed by him. POPO is a film which reminds one of the famous Hollywood musical Grease and our Travolta – Simbu has demonstrated yet again his prowess in dancing , singing and acting not necessarily in that order. I can without any hesitation say that after Kamal Hasan among the current crop Simbu is the most versatile actor . He however should avoid having the same expression in close up shots when he attempts to talk to himself ( or the audience?).

Varalaxmi Sarath has done her ( actor Sarath Kumar) father proud. It is difficult to believe it is her first movie. It’s a known fact that she is a good ( western) dancer and the casting fits her like a glove. She comes out depicting the rich ultra modern girl living abroad so very well that you tend to see her point of view as right in most of the scenes. She has shown no signs of any difficulty in the acting or dancing department which is so creditable considering that she Is paired with Simbu. Their on -screen chemistry is sizzling . If she really has spoken her own lines( not dubbed) ,she is here to stay for a long innings . Ganesh – VTV fame and now a regular in all SImbu movies does his part well. Shobana the dance ( aerobics) teacher looks too old - may be they could have avoided some tight close-ups.

Dharan Kumar’s music is clearly aimed at the next gen popularly called the “Youth”. Three songs are sung by simbu himself. Both the opening and closing numbers are already topping the charts in all the FM channels. Making his debut with “Parijatham” Dharan has not been very successful with his next few movies. POPO should give him the much needed break.

Shot entirely in London ( but for one song in Hong Kong Disneyland) the cinematography by Duncan is extremely pleasing to the eye. Locations have been chosen very well . The interiors of the apartments and the dance sequence sets fit the bill perfectly. Costume is a~ la mode and brings out the youthfulness of the lead characters.

The film does have its set of cons . It is not clear what Simbu does for a living .Somewhere it is said that he is in Animation. Can he afford the life style shown? He is shown as printing counterfeit notes to woo women which doesn’t go well with his preaching about India and culture. Some dialogues are repetitive. The arguments between the lead pair is on the same subject ( inspiration from “When Harry met Sally). May be they could have thought about more incidents to show how they are different.
At one stage the Heroine asks a question as how much the hero has sacrificed ( given up) for her ? Sadly that question remains unanswered.

As I started this review, Poda Podi clearly is ROM COM musical genre bringing to the audience the problems of the modern urban man and woman who like each other very much and at the same time looking for the much needed space. Such movies in English derive their strength from their dialogues.

True to our style in this movie, the song and dance measure is in equal dosage to support the dialogues and that where the film scores.

Podaa Podi Movie Online Review- 24by7news.com (http://24by7news.com)

STORY:
The story is set in London. Arjun (STR) is a guy following a western lifestyle and also has great respect for the Tamil values and tradition. He falls in love with Nisha (Varalaxmi), a salsa dancer and a cheerful chatterbox. Arjun thinks and believes the life in Indian way but Nisha wishes to live life according to the present moment.
Nisha is passionate towards dance and upcoming dance competition that is UK’s biggest dancing competition. Arjun completely hates Nisha’s passion for salsa. He wants his girlfriend to give up her profession for the sake of their relationship, but Nisha is not happy with his attitude. He also feels the relationship between Nisha and her dancing partner (Mojo) is in excess.
In spite of all such controversies, they both unite under conditional marriage. But Nisha continues dancing which bothers Arjun. Nisha gets pregnant and gives birth to a baby boy. When Nisha finds out the possessive attitude of Arjun, life takes a turn for the young couple and the disaster begins. The story takes a twist and what happens next should be seen on-screen.

PERFORMANCE:
STR leaves a permanent impression with his performance in the film that is modest and mature. The character suits him well and he plays with a lot of conviction.
Newcomer Varalaxmi Sarathkumar stuns the audience with her astonishing performance. The movie has offered her an excellent platform to show acting abilities as well as her dancing skills and she is glamorous too. In the kuthu song, she delivers the right kind of movements.
Ganesh is at his usual best and his combo with STR brings the house down. Shobana is okay.
Cinematographer Duncan Telford captures London in its colourful mood and the dances in a vibrant hue.
As the film is based on dance, dance choreographers deserve a special mention and they have done good work for their part.
The debutant director Vignesh Shivan has wonderfully presented each scene with style and has made the movie a complete youthful romantic musical movie.

COMMENTS:
The magic of this film lies in the performances of STR and Varalakshmi. Varalakshmi makes a promising debut and brings her character alive.
Over all, Podaa Podi is a lovely romantic movie with melodious songs and some peppy dance numbers. This romantic movie will a be great delight for this Diwali.

Podaa Podi Movie Online Review- www.pakwatan.com (http://www.pakwatan.com)

Vignesh Shiva the debutant’s long time dragging shooting project Poda Podi with Silambarasan and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar as pairs lead stars Released once for all in this Diwali and the film was not much noticed to be said as an old picture for its technical aspects shows it in today’s trends modification which was a biggest plus for the movie.

The film starts straight away in London where STR @Shivan meets Varalaxmi and starts falling in love and love blossoms from both sides and the film moves bit slow which was a little more drag in the romantic scenes which was executed. Varalxmi screen presence missed a lot due to her over weight and her face was not much pleasant compared to the stars who have already paired with Silambarasan earlier but the other side STR presented his way in a decent manner as he was already seen in many romantic films he is top at his best.

The Opening number Love pannalama Venama song triggered well to the female audience as females went on for a huge awe for their stars performance in different steps with funny lyrics which was attracted once for all. The number of Love Pannalama Venama has all its technical aspects to be appreciated to give Poda Podi on top the charts for this film.

The first half goes pretty slow and makes the audience to sit back to their seats to watch whats happening between the love pairs with mutual understandings, future planning’s, and execution of broad minded issues are well portrayed which needed a big dragging time for Vignesh shiva the debutant director of the movie.

STR @ Shivan the character was well sketched to him as in the first half he gained a lot to make a lead with other characters while in the second half he started dominating his women for the tamil culture where Varu was obviously a girl who love to live in foreign culture shores. The first half seems positive kudos for Simbu performace where as the second half leads to much disaster as the audience will start thinking where the director takes the movie to end and how will it end.

Varalaxmi as its her first movie did a pleasant job with dance movements and in especially the kuthu song number she even moved to the ultimate difficult steps to compete the opponent which will be surely appreciated for her efforts.

STR Twinkled in the first half as the script demands his second half will be a doubtful one for his performance but he managed to overcome to the flow of its acting skills. STR does certain dance steps which will be a trend to the coming future and he have even lend his voice as playback singer as it was seen natural to most of the people who watch the song numbers in the film. STR does it naturally and he bagged his performance to his best level.

Vignesh Shiva need to concentrate more in screenplay for a fast and packed romantic paces in which he should not once again drag the script to its slowness where it is not demanded. A good attempt by the debutant director.

Dharan the music composer is one of the main reasons to make the audience tap their feet for some numbers and crisp moments for the background music scores. Overall a decent score for the young music director. The cinematographer Duncan Telford showed London in a different beautiful way as it was colors everywhere for the love based script. Technical aspects are perfect from all sides for the film which is a biggest plus. Script need to be revised a little bit with fast screenplay.

‘Poda Podi’ – disappointing love story

Film: “Poda Podi”; Cast: Silambarasan, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, VTV Ganesh and Shobana; Director: Vignesh Shivan; Rating: *

Pray to god that he blesses you with immense energy and patience to sit through this disappointing film that is bereft of, forget entertainment, not even moments of laughter. Undeniably, the lead actors in the film are exceptionally good dancers and one can vouch for it. But, what doesn’t work in the favour of the film is the hope that the audiences are fools to flock to theatres to watch 10 minutes of impeccable dance performance in a film that runs to almost three hours.

Arjun, played by Silambarasan, calls himself an animation designer in the film, but he is either sleeping or dancing in clubs for most part. Nisha, played by Varalaxmi, is an aspiring salsa dancer with a goal to win a ‘Letz Dance’ competition in London. Arjun and Nisha meet in a club and share a few drinks one lazy evening.

Few days later, they’re madly in love with each other. Arjun, who’s an Indian, and moreover a Tamilian by birth, aspires to change Nisha before marriage. Nisha, born and raised in London, is completely against culture and society. When Nisha refuses to change some of her qualities for good, Arjun calls off their relationship. And they sulk for few days before reuniting with the intention of marriage.

Things change drastically post-wedding for Nisha and Arjun. While Nisha wants to closely dance with her salsa partner, Arjun intervenes citing her marital status. With her dance competition just three weeks away, Nisha should choose between her life or dance partner. Who will Nisha choose forms the rest of the story.

The story presents itself as a modern-day love story, but it definitely isn’t. The film is a desperate attempt to catapult the actor’s image to one of the best dancers in the film industry, while the actress proves her mettle as one of the best dancers in the newcomers’ category.
Never in its entire running time does the film strike a chord with the audience. Does the director want to prove that small adjustments in a relationship pave way to a happy and healthy ending? But on the contrary, he crushes his own philosophy by proving that if one gives in to adjustments, then he or she will suffer its consequence forever.

Silambarasan, in a desperate attempt to be the next superstar, fails miserably in his role. His role in this film is completely opposite to the one he played in “Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya”, but he still seems to have maintained a subtle sarcasm in his acting, which he assumes, is his forte, but it’s definitely not. The film throws plenty of opportunities for the actor to dance, but he awaits his moment until the climax.

Varalaxmi doesn’t even spare a single moment to dance. Undeniably, she shines as a dancer, but she should definitely find herself a dubbing artist. Her voice reminds me of Rani Mukerji’s voice in some of earlier films such as “Mehndi” and “Ghulam”. She definitely needs to work on her expressions and most importantly on her diction if she plans to continue dubbing for herself.

As far as music is concerned, barring the “Love pannlama” track, which is a bad rip-off of Eminem’s “Real Slim Shady”, the rest of the album helps the film to maintain some interest

'Poda Podi' - Is not a romantic flick but male chauvinistic- by Aravindan Di(www.newscommando.com (http://www.newscommando.com))

Director Vignesh Sivan has found a new way to promote male chauvinism. He has wrapped it with love and possessiveness. He has tied it with (pseudo)Tamil culture. Result? The whole movie has come out as a tiring experience of watching a predictable movie with highly objectionable and chauvinistic content.
The fun element in some scenes saves the film from total disaster.

It is quite incomprehensible that why the director, who has given some sharp and sensible lines for the heroine defending her right to pursue her passion, makes the hero win in every moment. Does he want to tell us that women have to be defeated despite being highly talented and honest?

Poda Podi is set in London. It is about the amazing chemistry and perennial conflict between Arjun (STR) and Nisha (Varalakshmi). They are madly in love each other but they do not share similar views on many things. Arjun is not comfortable with Nisha dancing with guys. But they get married soon after making some agreement to respect each other’s privacy and independence.

But cunning Arjun has other plans. He thinks that married life would subdue her. It has not. Then he plans to have child just to stop her from dancing with other guys. They get a child and later lose him in an accident. They hate each other for the mishaps in their lives. They part ways.

But they can not stay so as they love each other despite some strong differences. Sound interesting, isn’t it? Well, Poda Podi’s storyline does have the potential to be an emotional

romantic flick that ensures some gripping moments. The director has wasted the opportunity and treads in a beaten path marketing some chauvinistic message.
The hero exploits the girl in the name of love. He tries to control her by emotionally blackmailing her. His plan to have a child to stop his wife pursuing her passion is cruelty to the core.

Nisha is a salsa dancer with a dream of winning UK dance competition. Arjun doesn’t like her getting physically close with boys while dancing. He objects this before marriage but Nisha makes it clear that dance is her passion and she could not give it up for anything including love and marriage. Though Arjun
accepts her condition, he cannot actually accept. He starts compelling her to give up her passion just to satisfy his feelings. He goes on to work many plans and succeeds in everything. He even indulges in violence to stop his wife from dancing. Finally Nisha is forced to choose him as her dancing partner and
wins the competition in a dramatic manner.

The movie handles the conflict between different perceptions between the couple in an immature way. The heroine talks sense and behaves in a responsible manner. The hero, who is immature, chauvinistic and parochial, gets away with everything in the name of love. The movie could have been a good
experience had the director handled the subject with a broader perspective and responsibility.

Blatantly using the child as the tool to control the wife and restoring to pseudo cultural rhetoric are quite atrocious.
The movie also lacks interesting sequences and twists to keep the audience engaged.

STR has little scope to showcase his acting talents. He gets the usual job of romance, dance, fight, and utter some silly dialogues. There is nothing special to write about the actor.

Newcomer Varalakshmi steals the show. Her looks have the right blend of beauty and glamour despite being slightly stout. Her salsa dancing skills have been utilized properly. It is easily the major plus point of the otherwise dumb movie. Her acting is so matured that we cannot believe that this is her first film. She has done full justice to her character (in fact it is the only character that has been etched well).

VTV Ganesh makes us smile now and then but the Shobhana makes us feel sad for her. She couldn’t have chosen a worse character for her comeback.
Poda Podi is said to be a musical. Having seven songs (set to tunes by Dharan Kumar) within the span of two hours cannot make a movie a musical experience. Some of them sound good while we hear but they cease to stay in our mind. The placement of the songs is a torture, to say the least.

The background score adds to the moods of the scenes.
Duncan Telford’s camera has given the movie a delightful look.
On final count, Varalakshmi’s fresh looks and refreshing acting, a few dialogues, and Duncan Telford’s fine work with the camera save the film from getting drowned completely.

Watch the movie for Varalakshmi if you can digest some atrocious chauvinistic dialogues and sit through the unimaginative and repetitive scenes.

Verdict : **

Poda Podi
A well narrated simple canid tale of a young couple. Arjun is a rich Poda, Nisha is a so so rich Podi, both living in London. They meet, discover their differences, fall in love, get married, parent a baby, face emotional driven circumstances, part ways breifly and rejoin - Dance playing a major part in all their decesion making process during the different stages of their life. Right from the 1st minute, the narator makes it clear, to all the master minds who throw logical questions, that this movie is about the couple and not about who they are, how they landed up in london, what they do for living, etc. etc.

+

Varalakshmi : A very good debut. Emotes quite well. Excellent Dance movements. About her being a bit obese - Don't think so, atleast to me she does not shock me like Sonakshi Sinha. She is fabulous in trendy costumes. But she speaks fast.

Simbhu - A matured performance. He has tried his hand on emoting and comes out fairly sucessful. Still got to work on his voice modulation and shed his macho thing in his body language. Its funny when he asks Varalaxmi "Are you a TR fan" or "Ennake Verala".

Dance Choreography - Again Simbhu does some marvelous dance steps casualy and Varalxmi too.

Music - It follows the naration, that you do not even get a hint that a song is going to begin.

London - I would say its the 4th main character in the movie (dance being the 3rd). Bravo to the person who picked the locations for each and every outdoor scene. Its not the same London that we saw in Thandavam.

Cinematography - Colorful

Costumes - Notice the scrafs and how its tied around Simbhu's neck. Trendy summer & autumn wear for all the characters in the movie.

No seperate Comedy Track

All the backstage young debutants

-

Lyrics

As the story develops the lead character loose our attention as a matured/married couple.

A thin resemblence to SRK's "Rab ne Banadhi Jodi".

Shobana - Expected a dance sequence with her and Varalxshmi. Could have been very good. But she was shown sitting all the time except for a scence where she runs.

POV of Arjun character on the Tamil Kalacharam & as usual Simbhu's personal philosophy about love.

If you have a question : Padam Pakalama Vennama ? Answer : Pakalam

Synopsis: The biggest dream of dancer Nisha (Varu Sarathkumar) is to win a dance reality show. When she meet animations artist Arjun (Silambarasan), their priorities in life clash.

Movie Review: Director-writer Vignesh Shiva's urban romantic comedy may have been long in the making but is perfect foil for the season's biggy 'Thuppakki'. 'Podaa Podi' is a light tale about the love-hate relationship between Nisha and Arjun. Aptly set in London, debutant Vignesh gives us a broad picture about the clashes between a highly conservative Tamil man and a broad-minded NRI woman. The movie is well acted and shot, and even though the screenplay is wafer-thin, it keeps the audience going as the laughs keep coming. New face Varalaxmi Sarathkumar comes out with a decent performance as the chirpy and chatty Nisha, and proves her flexibility as a dancer. Silambarasan comes out well as usual and shows off his prowess as a 'kuthu dancer' (as a chapter in the movie is titled). He also gets his share of thrills, but goes overboard by making fun or taking lines or enacting characters out of his earlier movies.
Ganesh, a staple in all Silambarasan movies since 'Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa', evokes laughter as Arjun's uncle. He mumbles more English than he actually speaks, but this is exactly what make him hilarious. Shobana, though, has little to do as Nisha's guardian.
Duncan Telford does a good job behind the camera, and the shots which look best come when the couple stay apart. Dharan Kumar has composed okay songs, but the one that stands out is the title track 'Podaa Podi', which has been doing well on all radio stations.
Podaa Podi is strictly a movie for youngsters. The story is lopsided at most times, titling towards the man's point-of-view. It might win loud applause in the theatres, but it is doubtful as to how many viewers will support it otherwise.

Honestly, does the director think majority of desi girls living here are adopted to western values??? Obviously the director has not done much research about desi girls life style in UK!

Poda Podi - dance london dance

Watched it, liked it, it was not as bad as the reviewers make it sound like.

positives:
+ varalakshmi acting & dancing (maybe some wont like her real voice, but i prefer it rather than dubbing artists voice)
+ simbu's acting and dancing
+ VTV ganesh comedy
+ Vignesh Shiva for making a youthful movie in foreign that is bearable to watch
+ Dharans song ang BGM
+ choreography

negatives:
- Simbu does all the dancing in the songs, and whine abt his GF mustn't dance
- baby's death
- Shobana's character ( she earned easy money playing such a role that doesnt have impact in a movie)
- how could the bartender not see difference between fake and real £ notes at the beginning?

போடா போடி (from vikatan timepass)
