Yea, but few says this movie was taken from '500 days of summer', an english movie.. Am not sure as I haven't seen both.. Not just this movie, seems like most of GVM's are.. Haven't seen those english versions though :)

But one thing that always amazes me is the kind of movie GVM gives, its like we can say that its his movie even if we really dunno he has done, his style is different like Maniratnam's...

i havent watched that english movie, but i hardly doubt it.....dialogues are fulcrum of any movie IMO and they were so original in VTV - it was as if GVM, the writer was sitting along with character and brought out the entire feel and situation of the happening - its such a tough task, to imagine things from a-z and then implement it......for ex: the scene where jessie comes to karthik's house for first time and has a chat with his sister - the sister's artificiality and discomfort in talking with a new person - that was so real - im sure its a movie that was experienced and not written......and i dont think GVM was inspired from anyone else other than himself and his own life

True. But I feel Jessie was heavily inspired by the mysterious female lead in 500DOS. And she was better than Trisha too (both the writing and the acting). GVM did his best to Indianize that character and I must admit he was largely successful.

I am not denying both the points but you dont normally see such females being portrayed in tamil films and Trish's portrayal is dangerously close to Zooey's is my point. And the only other thing which is common between both the films is LAFS (which happens in 99% of all Tamil films)

Jessy madhiri neraya ponnunga irukkaanga - yen life-laye onnu rendu ponnungala paathurukken........

even before the movie released, when we came to know that the heroine character is a mallu christian, i expected a different characterisation because they are so different from tamil girls......they are a complex equation - and GVM was honest to that line of thought and depicted a contradictions-ridden girl

And the montage on Zooey from eyes to legs in 500DOS = that bit song on Trash in VTV? But even there GVM is effective. As Einstein puts it, "Creativity is knowing how to hide your sources" :)

Characters like Jessy only happens to be a Mallu Christian (in fact, there's nothing Mallu about the character. Even when she speaks in Malayalam, it screams 'fake') , in stead it's a character that could stand for vast majority of women, a complex (and often times dangerous) species. :P

MADDY

in fact, there's nothing Mallu about the character. Even when she speaks in Malayalam, it screams 'fake'

that too is captured by GVM :

trish during karthik-jessy-karthik sister conversation says:
malayalam sumaara dhaan pesuven, thamizh nalla pesuven.....

infact most of my mallu frnds in chennai know thamizh better than malalayam just like me know thamizh better than my mother tongue........infact most of other state people born in chennai can speak only "sumaar" mother tongue :P - these are small things captured by GVM that makes this very very special......

however mallu christian girls, though cannot speak malayalam, have smartness coupled with a sense of insecurity imbibed in them.......

Actually it wasn't 'sumaara' (and yes, my Mallu friends could be categorized here). It seems 'fake'. There's a subtle difference here.

pinna ennanga, u expect the character to say " "fake" malayalam" dhaan pesuven" .......when u have sumaar knowledge of mother tongue, and when u r exposed in ur own state, u try to speak proper mother tongue and that ends up sounding fake......

'Fake' is different from incompetence, the inability to from sentences, etc. Often times, such "Mallus" conflate Tamil, English and Malayalam together - but in this, it's never "fake". And there is a scope for both diction and gestural hints in Mallu Christian. GVM attempts few cues. But in case of Trisha, it's a non-starter. She sounds naturally fake in dialog modulation. Regardless of language.

Note: I'm told it's Chinmayi who dubbed for her, is this true? In which case, she is less than competent job in helping Trash pass as a Mallu christian..

yes, she did underperform - she didnt perform even 60% of the character sketch GVM had implemented for her......her character was largely expressed by BGMs and mannippaaya song

Cant resist a brief sojourn:

All said and done, VTV probably was the best movie I watched this year.

Got to go with kid, fake is different from natural incompetence. It is not just Trish, but the malayalam that GVM wrote for her, by itself, seemed more fake than "out of depth in mother tongue". Perhaps, cAmblikAter can clarify.

As for Mallu Christian etc, if I take that aspect, I would probably be disappointed with VTV. I just chose to ignore it and benefitted from that decision. I just didnt get the Mallu christian(in Chennai) flavour in Trisha and her family. Dont ask me to explain - I dont want to reveal too much from my personal life ;-)

Sadly, I didn't care for VTV. For me it was the same old star crossed lover story but trying too hard to be hip and trendy and with dull actors. Didn't believe any of the "close" scenes between the leads. Though I could have predicted that since the plastic doll Trisha was acting in it (well, Chinmayee, who I believe dubbed her voice, was the actual actress).

But, I haven't bothered watching recent movies, so maybe it's better than the rest.

I don't know, good acting, good writing, that kind of thing. There are far better romances set in urban backgrounds. VTV didn't cut it for me.

Just because I don't like it doesn't mean you aren't allowed to like it. Anyways, I'm going to stop here before starting a debate like the last guy.[/quote]

A film being liked or disliked is dependent on how the viewers infer it, going beyond dialogues and the message / meaning explicitly told. I found quite a number of great moments in this movie.

Regarding counter-view, I had a very good discussion with Jinju on Raavanan, through PMs. He had raised a number of questions for which I replied with my understanding / inference of the character / scene. It was good. Adhaidhaan naan inga "counter-view" nu sonnEn.

I didn't like d film too. I dunno...maybe it works for those who faced a similar situations in their life. I went to the film with my friends. Two of them slept throughout the second half, yet another had tears streaming down his cheeks. When I poked him, he looked down and said, "my ex did the same thing to me too." Poor guy :( Needless to say, he was the only one who loved the film.

I probably would have been able to 'feel' it, if there was any shred of chemistry or emotion between the lead characters/actors, which I sure didn't see. Especially that scene where they are outside the house alone, which I guess was an attempt at showing "passion" (I was rolling my eyes).

A 'love story' needs more than just a script with all the cliched love dialogues and conflicts (and some pointless swearing) to be convincing. That was the problem for me.

Have seen this some few years back. My 2 cents. "Terminal" was a good movie, IMO. Not great but definitely entertaining. It is dramatic (and rightly so) in many places to kindle the kind of compassion the movie needs. It starts off well, giving a few "inside" insight on how things run inside an airport before completely shifting focus into it's lead/central character.

MC Garu you are spot on as always , the last 30 mins of the movie had a great shift to the character. And the Ending the sole purpose of why he wanted go to that Bar to meet that Jazz player chumma heart touching- touching :P

Agreed Sberg movies are usually good . But he has some mokai padam like War of Worlds to his credit.

For me this one was a suprise package, with beautiful ending.

story line therinjuttu padam parkkureenga.. neenga oru different'ana aalu.. appadinu nanbar oruthar sonnar.. sila karuthukkal adhu patri..

- i can write & give u the storyline of polladhavan in just 2 lines.. instead of watching it onscreen is that enough?

- many said that telugu kick as a classic comedy.. same people are watching it again in tamil knowing the capability of Raja. how it will be interesting watching the same film?

- There is a classic example that i read in hub a year ago. when it was confirmed that kamal doing the remake of A Wednesday, dvd sales of this film was on high.. the beauty in this is A Wednesday was a suspense thriller but still his fans wanted to know about that before UPO

- since a vijay fan said that i m different.. let me ask how many vijay fans have watched 3 idiots after the news of remake & i know a few Ajith fans watching malayalam kireedom before tamil version.

- i can write & give the 'vaanam pozhigiradhu' dialogue in a paper .. will that give u the same feel while reading & watching sivaji performing. It depends on who is performing.. now imagine jeyam ravi delivering 'vaanam pozhigiradhu'

- even if a successful novel is made into a film.. the directors strength lies in making it interesting even while watching ... eg. thillana mohanambal (i have read that thillana mohanambal first came as a novel in ananda vikatan).

- hmm konjam periya post'ah poyiduchu :P aana sariyana postunnuthan ninaikkiren.

I liked "catch me if you can" alot :2thumbsup: , I recently watched the "Terminal" also directed by Spielberg....I wasn't wowed...it was watchable and "the feel good" kind...the real-life story it's based on seemed much more interesting though.

The real story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mehran_Karimi_Nasseri

I've only watched a handful of Spielberg movies...I guess he's admired for the versatility of films he has directed...IMO anyways.

Anjaathey: Watched it coz of the news that two malayalam cine industry actors doing the lead roles in a tamil film, and Prasanna in a negative role for the first time. Half an hour into the film, i was like WOW, what a thread for a film! two friends, one studious and one wastrel, the tables turn and the wastrel becomes a police officer n the 'supposed to be' one's life goes in the opposite direction...could be anyone's story! and then, Mysskin runs the show real good, the last 30 mins or so could've been better...the haunting BGM just adds to the mood of the film. had me hunting for the dvd of Mysskin's first film, and though i liked it too, Anjaathey still makes me go for repeat viewings. To me, Mysskin's biggest achievement as a director, he made Ajmal act :D !

Parthiban kanavu is one of those beautiful films in Tamil cinema that gives you a very happy feeling after watching the movie. I just saw it today for the second time today and felt like I was in heaven. After 7 years I am watching this film again and I still think it is one of the best films made in Tamil cinema in this generation. Srikanth is a charming actor who really shares a good chemistry with the Beauty queen sneha. The whole crew has done a good job especially vivek who just made this movie a lot more fun. After watching this film I thought to myself why don't they make beautiful different films like this in Tamil cinema anymore. Even though the film might be a 2003 film it really is something that would still work today because of a realistic story. The director has done a fantastic job and made sure that the audience is entertained throughout the film. Sneha and srikanth have acted their roles to perfection. The song kana kandenaidi is one mesmerizing song by yesudas that we cannot ever
forget because of it's beautiful melody. Intact that song is the central theme for this movie. It has been picturized and sung so perectly that this is one of those few movies where one song is good enough to make the whole film work. I am hoping we will get to see more films from this director because he really has given a meaningful movie in Tamil cinema. I only wish that I could travel back in time to 2003 so that I can see this film in theatres.

Verdict: A beautiful film in indian cinema that will always stay within our hearts. Will be a perfect valentine's present for your soul mate or lover.

:exactly:

Srikanth is a charming actor who really shares a good chemistry with the Beauty queen sneha.

Yes indeed this pair onscreen really seemed to have gone good together even when I first saw them in "April Maadhathil" I felt the same way.

It really is something that would still work today because of a realistic story. The director has done a fantastic job and made sure that the audience is entertained throughout the film.

Though I found it unrealistic to stumble upon two identical beauties, I felt the story was compelling enough to quell the "reality check" and just enjoy the movie. I also felt it was a more laidback and mature but similar story as "Gopurangal Saivathillai" with its cute and clueless Arukkani.

Sneha and srikanth have acted their roles to perfection. The song kana kandenaidi is one mesmerizing song by yesudas that we cannot ever forget because of it's beautiful melody. Intact that song is the central theme for this movie.

I really felt that Sneha played both her roles keeping them both distinct and charming. And the song is a gem for sure!

But the thing is it doesnt have any breath taking actions except the opening war to capture the holy land......According to me I felt it is so average........Yesterday I hv seen the movie gone baby gone which is so good, its an action movie but moreover the decisions taken by the hero at various occasion make u feel like a hero should be lik tat...........

Went to the movie without any expectations. But the movie was a very decent entertainer with good dialogues by Viji and reasonably good performance from the otherwise stone faced Ravikrishna.
