songs were good esp. "thanneer kudam kondu" & "manjal poosum" - isaignani + vaali
suganya kooda nallathanya irukka..
checked in wiki.. it was released in 1993... i think, similar timeline to "koil kaalai" .. so the film has his latest heroines suganya (heroine) & kanaka (thiyagi)
comedy'than mokkai.. they tried to do some patchwork with r sundarrajan, senthil & vadivelu
dialogues by Liyakat Ali Khan.. very good..

- i expected it to be atleast a 50 day hit (in 1996... i was a school kid then ):p .. reason for the expectation is its starcast
- directed by film student director
- captain's films those times are pretty much decent outing for a average commercial film fans
- at that time, he was yet to act the way the facebook meme creators see's him
- i remember, it crossed 25 days in coimbatore city.. i don't think it reached 50 day mark

Saw that :-) Senthil is the 3rd hero. Radhika, Lakshmi's names are all mentioned after Senthil. btw, terrible music! I noticed one thing. In 80s even some of the flops for which Isaignani composed music were popular for their songs - Idhayakoyil, Ranga, Sattam etc. But those which music was composed by other MDs are completely forgotten now, just like this one. Nobody remembers KH and RK's movies like Pagadai Pannirendu, Sivappu Sooriyan as they were non-IR movies.

- probably the last time 2nd grade actors had a same day release as heroes (rajini & kamal - 1st grade), karthik - nandhavana thaeru, prabhu - chinna vathiyar... from 1996 onwards vijay & ajith took over with poove unakkaga & kadhal koattai.. except our captain, no other heroes of his age could make a comeback

I like captain since 1986 oomai vilihal and became a fan from pulan visaranai 1990 and watched most of captain movies in cinemas starting from tamil chelvan till engal anna,niranja manasu and gajendra. my first captain movie in cinema was oomai vilihal in india thats when i was studying in st johns,viruhambaakam and captain was the chief guest for a function in our school when the movie got released to provide free tickets for a special show just for the school. my first captain movie in london was tamil chelvan. an amazing experience and a wonderful movie.especially captain looks trim and smart throughout the movie.

I will share my experience for all other captain movies I watched here in london. good old days.

- meloattama partha mokkai padam... vijayakanth fan'nu oru softcorner'oda parthalum idhu mokkai padam thaan..
- titles give u a thought its a double hero subject..
- but, its a vijayakanth film.. prabhu has very less screen time.. nothing much role to play.. vijayakanth has double role.. father-son, prabhu is another son..
- considering the star cast & the director.. it should have turned out to be a blockbuster... superb chance was missed
- directed by R Sundarrajan... surprised to see Ilaiyaraja is not the music director.. music: devendran
- for this story, Manivannan would have given a better film..

VK had an accident during this movie shoot as a glass pierced his skin near his eye and had to take rest in Madurai for nearly 3 months without letting anyone know where he is staying as there will be disturbance. Rumours everwhere stating he has gone blind and will not act anymore.No more movies for VK etc. So he was in a situation to give a comback movie to recover his position in tamil cinema.

Ulavan Magan was launched(relaunched?) in front of press,distributors and theatre owners to show he is still in business. Ulavan mahan released and bacame a super hit/blockbuster which ran for 125 days reinstating Captains market value to a new high and was compared to Rajni,Kamal's business thereafter as Ulavan Mahan became a hit against heavy competition Avm's Manithan, Maniratnam's Nayagan and Sathiyaraj's Makkal Enn Pakkam.

Kalayum neeye Mallayum neeye was a flop and ran for less than 20/25 days.
"Rathiriku Konjam Oothikiren" pathos was a hit at the time.

Very true it is a disaster eventhough the combination was good and was released big. Rajni's SIVA was on the similar lines of KNMN but that too ended as a failure with big combination(But Raghuvaran rocked)!

Saw Paatuku Oru Thalaivan last night. A good movie with superb songs by IR, especially Ninaithathu yaaro happy and sad and alahiya nadhiyena, both are best.
Vks performance is too good with first half comedy and second half sad.
Dialogues were brilliant especially the jail scene in second half when he says 'Oru kaalathile en manasu muluka nee irundha aana ippo en amma' reminds me of the political situation in 2011.
Shobana was very beautiful through out the movie with different sarees and a rose.She looked stunning. Her only hit movies is this one and Idhu Namma Allu till Thalabathy(1991). I think all her other movies were failures in Tamil.
Movie could have been a bit faster but never mind its still a good one.
I think its a super hit and ran for 100 days as there was another movie with same pair released in the same year(PONMANA CHELVAN)

When the movie was released during its first show(premiere show???) roses were given to audience/fans with each ticket. A unique release indeed.

Honest...
Ponmanachelvan is moderate success/decent hit movie, thats why they teamed up again for a blockbuster Sethupathy IPS and enkitte mothathe is a failure. Malluvetti minor is a moderate success too.

Ponamana chelvan is a superb movie eventhough its inspired from Padikatha Methai due to its quality making. VKs acting was too good in emotional scenes,
Gounders Honkong Annamalai jokes were quite decent,
Gud casting except brothers, they could have been established actors like prabhu and karthik and P Vasu could have easily changed the script slightly according to the actors. It would have been a classic and a blockbuster.
IRs bgm and songs are the biggest plus/backbone for the movie, especially poovana etai thottu song was the biggest chartbuster during release.
Overall very good movie from VK and will be remembered by everyone who loves VK and 80s/90s movies.

My wife does not prefer to watch VK movies but she likes this movie a lot due to its family content and entertainment.

Yes true. I completely forgot about Ennakul Oruvan. It is a decent movie and Kamal as a Nepali was brilliant. Unfortunately a failure. Barath later took this as a reference for his Nepali movie. She acted another movie called Maruthani with Pandiyan but that too a failure & Gounder's comedy is hillarious!!!

Barathan:

Superb BGM by Raja and especially the theme music.

SPB as VKs brother is perfect.

Vk's performance is at its best especially the scenes where he is on search for SPB and the highlight is the court scene when he explains about his brother's love towards him(a must watch).

Songs were just superb! Pottathellam Vetrikallu & Punnahaiyil Minsaram are chartbusters but not sure about Alahe Amudhe?(but very nice song).

Movie moves at a decent speed then picks up during the search and slows down in climax. They should have changed the climax to something different then it would have been extraordinary.

Special Mention: Dialogues - I just love the dialogues in the movie. There is something special and powerful. When I watched this movie first time I was a kid and I just loved the way VK perform those dialogues.

Dialogue 1: VK to Police in the station when he is tied up and gets beaten, "Adi, nalla adi, adichu ippave konnudu illai appram nee romba varutha paduva"! This dialogue was copied/inspired in Dhill by Vikram just before the intermission to the police & in Maryaan by Dhanush. This shows the power/mass of this dialogue.

Dialogue 2: VK to Anandaraj at a party - "Unnai adikira adile nee yenda porandhenu ninaikanum".

Dialogue 3: VK to Anandaraj over the phone just before he gets arrested for his brother's murder, "Enn annanuku ethavadhu aachu, unnai uyiroda erichiduven".

Dialogue 4: VK to Napoleon, "Avane naan nichayama kolluven, innaike kolluven".

A superb show by SD Sabha. A super hit movie which ran for 100 days!

Barathan is a fine example of a good commercial entertainer with a good story line!
