View Full Version : IR's BGM

tamizharasan
13th September 2010, 08:10 PM
When IR was at his peak, he could do anywhere between 25 movies to 50 movies in a year. Even then his BGM quality is second to none. He is an absolute genius. The insiders told that he could come up with appropriate BGM and songs for movie in as low as few minutes.

Let us talk about his amazing talent here. Your favorites BGM of IR including movies and particular scenes. No comparison with any others please. Please include the quotes, of what other celebrities have to say about him. We can also select favorite BGM work of him for an eventual poll.

Taken from my old post on topic "Awakening to Background Score" in Current Topics Section:
-------------------------------------------------

http://www.backgroundscore.com/2008/03/listening-pithamagan.html தளத்தில் "Sithan’s Revenge:" என்ற ஒலித்தொகுப்பை கேளுங்கள். 6.00 முதல் 7.00 வரையிலான இடைவெளிக்குள் நடந்தேறும் இந்தக் காட்சியில் படைக்கப்பட்ட பின்னணி இசை, நம் நெஞ்சையும் அருவா மனையில் அறுத்துப் போடும் வல்லமை கொண்டது. apparently, he battled it out with mammootty (paleri, loudspeaker, kutty srank and pazhassi) in the final round... on the steam of range, mammootty looked a default choice but lal's bhramaram was a standout turn too... the best of the year, IMO... probably the film didn't interest them enough to look close enough at the performance.

Kutty Srank has sweeped the awards - Overall Best film, Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing. So suprising Mammooty lost.

Beat that for range and excellence(managed to catch paleri and pazhassi - although latter is not much of a role, it still beats Paa hollow. Former is ofcourse a tour de force. Hear good reviews of LS and KS, too.)
And they gave the award to one puny paa

Because even the award for Bachcan is pro-Bachchan propoganda. How can they overlook Mammotty for not one, not two but 3 acclaimed performances, 1 of which I saw and is good enough to beat the crap out of Paa. And two others carry good reviews too. Plus Pazhassi Raja which is not much of a role but he still brought it the necessary gravity and dignity.

While subjectivity is involved, for the sheer range displayed there, they should have chosen Mammotty. I mean, the award is not called "Best performance in the year in aleading male role". It is called "best actor" so "Range+Excellence" should beat "Excellence in one role", which itself was debatable.

For a moment i was thinking - did they give bet BGM score for paa. Then breathed easy when it went to Pazhassi Raja. Well hapy to know that Raaja got the award, however I think, the award itself must have been named as "Ilaiyaraaja award" and given away to Amit Trivedi. His work in DevD both in music and BGM front deserved a strong recognition.

However, this thought process raises a question too - does the 'halkE sE bOlE' kind of kutty songs get added for consideration of quality of "BGM score"? Sometimes they're far more effective than any pure instrumental score, as in this case (that raised goose bumps , one of the few good moments of pA for me).

PR, despite BSO, is average stuff by IR standards IMO - but good enough for this ok kind of movie. The best piece was when the British fellow realizes during the time of a negotiation that there's a huge AdhivAsi crowd outside (and hence could not harm the king).

Typical IR folk, presented in a grand manner with world class arrangement!

Interesting point. The kind of accolades he received don't do any justice to his talent. As hub knows already that I am not a big fan of him but how hard I may try, I can't stop praising his genius. As a child we went to see his music show in his hometown, where he did for temple kumbabhisekam, for free of cost. It was possibly the first time he did something like that. It was an amazing show and looking at his childhood and place where he was brought, he was born genius and there can't be two opinions about it.

Anyway been playing Thalapathi in my mind since morning for some reason. One of the greatest works of IR. Certainly in his top 5 BGM works and as a BGM + Album has to be his finest. (ippOdhaikku ipdi ninaikkirEn).

This is Mani ratnam & Anil Gapoor's first movie. By this period Mr. IR had completed about couple of hunderd movies as assitant to GKV.
If I am right this was also 1 of the first 10-20 movies for IR as an independed mujik de-recator.

No, no!

pallavi anupallavi is a 1983 movie and IR has finished around 200 movies prior to that as independent MD :-)

Even his classic scores for BM -moodupani & moondRAm piRai predate this. IIRC, MR got BM to work as director of photography in his first movie, hoping to have the additional benefit of some tips in movie direction.

I got answer for my question about whether this BGM piece of P-AP or the mella mella song from vAzhkai came first. Looks like this BGM (1983) predates the song (1984).

BTW, I read somewhere that YSR used the same thing in one of his movies...

annakkiLi, as Param and others pointed out, was a 1976-er.

This link has songs of some 700+ Thamizh films of IR :
http://www.thiraipaadal.com/md.php?MDID=MD00001&lang=en

You can check out the yearly grouping there as well, that gives some idea (despite the few mistakes here and there).

His 100th movie was BM's moodupani (1980) & 200th was Ayiram nilavE vA that had Karthik as hero (1983).

And by the time MR arrived, IR was the undisputed numero uno in TFM, with hardly any competition. Why, he was competing with the top heroes for honors / remuneration already. His name started appearing in posters in 1982, with payaNangaL mudivadhillai :-)

If you check thiraippAdal site, you'll be shocked to see that IR composed in TF alone some 40+ movies in certain years (and add to that the MF/TeF movies, arguably the world record for an annual # of movies as a composer)...

My first awakening to background score, borrowing the term from PlummanAr, happened during watching Kadhalukku Mariyathai. And the second awakening, konjam asandhu thoongittEn, happened while revisting Sindhu Bhairavi. Everybody raves about the songs, but the BGM was on par. I didn't realize it during watching the film. But days later when my friend and self were discussing the film, every scene my friend mentioned was etched in memory only as the background score.

Favourite piece from the film (http://ilayarajarerecordings.blogspot.com/2010/02/sindhu-bhairavi-sindhu-in-love.html)

Brilliantly supports the montages, if i can call it that way.

Agni N, might be my second awakening too. The distortion veena piece, the train in doorstep as af alluded are ofcourse great.
Then there is the idi-minnal confrontation score which concludes like an amplified effect of a coin's settling in the ground after several spins on the ground after being tossed, the trumpets signifying the noose tightening on umapathy.

There is one tender piece amidst all this high energy explosion - bo, not the I love you theme for nirosha intro. When tara runs up the stairs carrying the kovil prasadam, the flute climbs the stairs with her. She forgets her place in the family in the excitement of getting the prasad to her father; the flute captures all this and the veena piece leading up to being stopped by the policeman and sumitra saying "enga veettu ponnu dhaan". Mani milked the moment very effectively(one of his strong points) and Raja gave full support.

IMSO, "cinema" is an art form comprising of all these ingradients - story / nadippu / pAdal / pinnaNi isai / photography etc. And there is no single way of "mixing" these ingradients.

As a fan, he has the right to say I like this - I don't like that etc.

Using Naadhaswaram in ubran background song(kanmaniye pesu from kaaki sattai)
Using Guitar + Naadhaswaram in an Rural son (Pthi Vecha malliga Mottu)

Among the long list of achievements is also this one, where Raaja broke the illusionary barriar of a meejical instrument to create a majic

வெஸ்டர்ன் ஸ்டைலில் அமைந்த 'We shall meet' (LRE) மற்றும் 'my sweety...

nobody ignored MSV, here is a small image from MSV-25 in latest vikatan http://img153.imageshack.us/i/photo0971.jpg/

It mentions about 6 songs where international music styles were used.

At the same time, i dont want to get into IR vs MSV. this is IR thread

I recently watched Nooravathu Naal, it's my favorite movie mainly for IR's BGM.

The scene where Nalini witnesses the murder that came in her dreams and then chased by Sathyaraj to the church. Mindblowing BGM :notworthy:

BGM when Kamal Learns he could dance at the festival. This is better than Kamal-Sri devi chemistry. Acting is top-notch.

I always thought this before. Only in numbers Kamal Sri Devi chemistry beats kamal jayapradha chemistry. I am in 100% agreement with you on this.
