CWG: Australian team arrive in Delhi

Press Trust Of India,
Sep 27, 2010.

New Delhi: The first batch of Australian athletes for the Commonwealth Games which include the lawn bowls team arrived on Monday morning, hoping to remain unaffected by the troubled build-up to the event.

"Who'd have thought lawn bowls would lead Australia into battle?" said one of the team members.

They are well aware of the criticism that has engulfed the Games Village but the Aussies said they would not form an opinion before having a look at it themselves.

"We've heard reports but we'd like to see for ourselves.

We're going in without expectations and what we see is what we get," said another player.

"There's a fair bit of pressure, but we're pretty confident," she said.

Later on Monday, Australia's netball and gymnastics teams will also arrive for the October 3 to 14 event.

So far, three Australian athletes have pulled out of the Games -- cyclist Travis Meyer, table tennis player Stephanie Sang and discus world champion Dani Samuels.

- Suresh Kalmadi just tried to commit suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of wrestling arena but the ceiling collapsed.

¤ Worried about 100 mts race at common wealth games, they might fix a board near start line - "GO SLOW MEN AT WORK"

¤ "Breaking news - A.R Rehman song dropped from CWG..Instead, Kalmadi will Dance at the opening ceremony, 2 the song,"Dilli badnaam hui, darling MERE liye "

¤ Supreme court directs OC to print new tickets with a warning “carry helmet while attending the games”. More cops deployed to challan people without ISI mark helmet. TATA announces new helmet production plant at Nandigram. Communists are protesting.

Asiad coloured Indian TV, now CWG to spur HDTV

27 Sep, 2010

NEW DELHI: If the 1982 Asian Games heralded the colour TV era in India, the Commonwealth Games (CWG) are likely to spur the growth of high definition TV. For national broadcaster Doordarshan (DD) will bring the event in high quality digital format with cameras on land, in water and from helicopters.

For the first time in their history, the Commonwealth Games (CWG) will be produced in high definition (HDTV) - a format that offers stunningly real picture quality and theatre-like sound quality.

"It will provide a unique experience and set new standards for the Games to come," Aruna Sharma, director general of Doordarshan, told IANS in an interview. "The IBC (International Broadcasting Centre) is ready. Finetuning and light correction is being executed," she said.

Differing with those who feel that India should not have hosted a show like the Commonwealth Games, Sharma said more such events should be held as they set the drill and have a trigger effect on the economy within the country.

"Holding such events improves organisational ability and provides an opportunity to re-look at redundant systems," she said.

The IBC, located in Pragati Maidan, will be the nerve centre of broadcasting activities. The right-holding broadcasters, who have been provided nearly one-third space within IBC, can customise the basic feed provided to them by host broadcaster Prasar Bharti and send their signals either through satellite uplinking service or international fibre service.

Doordarshan will telecast the Games in both high definition and standard definition format.

A new channel - DD HD - will telecast the event in high definition format while DD Sports will provide round-the-clock transmission on standard format. DD National, DD Urdu and DD Bharti, DD News and regional channels will also telecast Games-related events. Doordarshan will also produce 30-minute highlights every day, focussing on the performance of Indian athletes.

The showpiece event will be covered by over 350 cameras. Helicopters will be used for opening and closing ceremonies and a few road events while underwater cameras have been installed for aquatic events.

Interviews of athletes, cultural events and side stories of the games will be covered by 25 mobile camera units.

Cameras have also been installed at landmarks like Qutub Minar, Connaught Place, Red Fort, India Gate and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to add visual content to the telecast. DD has tied up with a British entity, SIS Live, for production and coverage of the Games.

Apart from being the technical hub of Doordarshan, the IBC will provide facilities like linear and non-linear edit suites. It will also have space for putting up dish antennas.

About Rs.366 crore ($81 million) is being spent on production, coverage and telecast of Games. Doordarshan will share the revenue earned during the Games with the organising committee - the broadcaster will get 30 percent of the revenue earned by the committee through international telecast rights.

IBC will have a round-the-clock office for gathering and distributing all broadcast related information.

Doordarshan has added something extra to its logo as well. It will now have a robotic frame complete with an antenna, camera eyes and speaker-like ears.

Colour TV transmission in India started Aug 15, 1982, about three months before the Asian Games. Coinciding with the games, the government had announced a new gift scheme to facilitate import of colour TVs and given permission to a few companies to manufacture colour TV sets.

Aruna Sharma said the Commonwealth Games will mark a shift towards programming in high definition and television sets coming to the market will be increasingly compatible with the format.

"While a few thousand people in the country watched the 1982 games on colour TV, a few lakhs will watch the Commonwealth Games on high definition. It makes a terrific difference to viewing, specially sports," she said.

After snake setback, he's happy with CWG Village now (http://cwg.ndtv.com/commonwealth/article/id/spoen20100154500/type/latest/After-snake-setback,-hes-happy-with-CWG-Village-now-55011.html)

New Delhi: South African High Commissioner Harris Mbulelo Mejeke, who created a sensation by claiming that a snake was found inside his country's residential block at the Commonwealth Games Village, now says that facilities have improved and are "unlike" what he saw during his previous visit.

Mejeke, who had claimed that a snake was found in a room in the residential tower earmarked for the South African athletes, has stated that the conditions have changed for the better now.

"All I am saying is that people who are preparing our athletes area are doing a great work and we are impressed and it is unlike what I saw yesterday," Mjeke told reporters late last night after visiting the Village.

Before going into the Village last evening, Mjeke had also stated that the athletes "can't go and stay till things are fixed up as they had very grave concerns."

"Yesterday we found a snake but I don't know whether it was an Indian snake. But it was there in one of our rooms. That was a threat to the lives of our athletes. Very disappointing. Basically, the basement was full of water and the staircase was also damp," he had said.

But after coming out, Mjeke said the organisers have taken note of all the South African grievances.

"Everything has been addressed. They are finishing up and very soon everything would be alright. I am really hopeful that we will finally move into the Village. They (the organisers) are working very seriously," he said.

The Games Village has already come in for sharp criticism for what some delegates have termed as unhygienic conditions.

I understand Maddy. On a positive note the Pakistani counterpart have given a green signal and are scheduled to arrive on Sep 29. Also both the Officials and Players have condemned the foreigners especially players from the West of complaining :) It happens only when they come to the sub-continent.

India moved a step further to winning gold medals on the second day of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang won gold medal in Pairs 10m air rifle and created Commonwealth Games record. Soon after, Anisa Sayeed and Rahi Sarnobat won a gold medal in the 25m pistol pairs event.

On Day 1, women lifters Soniya Chanu and Sandhya Devi Rani opened the medal chest for India by grabbing the silver and bronze in the 48 kg class.

Indian Ladies win Gold and Silver in 10Km marathon and Sudha singh in 3000m steeplechase @ Asiad.......

our men's volleyball did excellently well by upsetting world class team like japan before bowing down in quarters.....

wushu silver, rowing gold, silver medals, Golf silver, swimming bronze, running world no.1 close in Archery, winning couple of rounds in sepak takraw are not just results but statement of India's expanding capabilities in other sporting disciplines and an indicator of growing stature of a strong sporting nation......

i would like to rename this thread "Indian Sports @ International Arena" and discuss about the indian athletes whenever they participate in a international event or multi-category events...........request everyone to watch the games and support for Indian athletes in the event......trust me, games like hockey, archery, shooting, table tennis, volleyball, athletics etc are 100 times more exciting than cricket in any form........

Indian medals so far:

India deciding not to send a team. India’s decision to stay away and the absence of the region’s top players has robbed cricket of its star value as it is being played for the first time at the Asian Games. Cricket, a non-Olympic sport, was confirmed for Guangzhou three years ago following the seemingly enthusiastic support from the continent’s big four – India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The decision by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was a disappointment for cricket lovers and a setback in the sport’s bid to spread its international reach via multi-sports events.

Sanjeevi, Afghanistan is a genuine rising power. They have come from nowhere to the second rung in less than 5 years. Ofcourse, the climb from here is steeper but they seem to have the talent - the only dampener is their political environment.

Check out their story in cricinfo. Link appuram thEdi eduthArEn.

[tscii:f7ec18a9f8]Saina Nehwal wins Hong Kong Open

Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal rallied to register a scintillating three-game victory over Shixian Wang of China to clinch the title at the Hong Kong Open in Wanchai on Sunday.

The 20-year-old Indian capped her career's fourth Super Series title triumph with a 15-21, 21-16, 21-17 win over the third-seeded Chinese in a gruelling one hour and 11 minutes summit clash at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium.

Saina won back-to-back titles — Indian Open Grand Prix, Singapore Open Super Series and defended the Indonesian Super Series — before clinching the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games in October.

Saina, who dropped to fourth in the world rankings, is likely to inch closer to the No. 1 spot with this resounding victory.

Tactical game

Saina played a tactical game after she lost the first game and clawed her way back with some fast-paced rallies and powerful smashes to outwit the Chinese World No. 5.

In the second game, Saina jumped to 11-5 from 5-5 but Shixian narrowed the gap to 11-10 before the gutsy Indian surged ahead to 19-11 by registering seven straight points.

But Saina missed a couple of points on the baseline and nets to allow Shixian close the gap to 19-16. But with the Chinese hitting the shuttle out, Saina was back into the match.

Gruelling battle

In the edge-of-the-seat decider, Saina and Shixian were locked in a gruelling battle and didn't concede an inch to each other.

The Chinese kept pushing the shuttle at the back court but Saina was in no mood to relent as she retrieved everything and sent down some powerful cross court smashes to open up a 5-0 lead.

But a couple of misjudgements on the baseline allowed Shixian to narrow the gap. The Chinese started playing fast rallies and caught Saina at the nets to make it 6-7 but a series of unforced errors and a sensational cross court smash saw Saina change sides with an 11-9 lead.

Long rallies

Back into her winning side of the court, Saina involved her rival in long rallies and waited for Shixian to make mistakes.

A controversial baseline call gave Shixian a lead of 14-13 but Saina didn't give up and wrested the lead at 15-14 before being locked at 16-16.

From here on, Saina walked away with a three-point cushion with a smash, a net dribble and round-the-head drop to move to 19-16. Shixian gained another point with a smash to make it 19-17.

But Saina soon achieved the match point with another smash that floored Shixian and with the Chinese hitting the shuttle out, Saina threw her racquet to the spectators in celebration.

The results (finals): Men's singles: 1-Lee Chong Wei (Mas) bt 3-Taufik Hidayat (Ina) 21-19, 21-9. Women's singles: 2-Saina Nehwal (Ind) bt 3-Shixian Wang (Chn) 15-21, 21-16, 21-17.

Men's doubles: 6-Ko Sung Hyun & Yoo Yeon Seong (Kor) bt 2-Markis Kido & Hendra Setiawan (Ina) 21-19, 14-21, 23-21.

Women's doubles: Wang Xiaoli & Yu Yang (Chn) bt 1-Cheng Wen-hsing & Chien Yu-chin (Tpe) 21-11, 21-12.

Mixed doubles: 6-Joachim Fischer Nielsen & Christinna Pedersen (Den) bt 5-Zhang Nan & Zhao Yunlei (Chn) 22-20, 14-21, 22-20 . — PTI [/tscii:f7ec18a9f8]
