Hallo, Steve waugh is an Excellent middle order batsman. Has nearly 7500 runs and 45 fifties (http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/content/player/8192.html). Finisher of the game. Can consolidate and attack at ease. Has 195 wickets. Can bowl in middle overs as well.

#4 batting nominations:

1. Aravinda De silva: Great batsman, elegance/gracefulness personified, murderous on his day, great user of his feet, equally at ease against pace or spin, could play every shot in the book and can bat in all kinds of wicket/surface. Like many great batsmen in world cricket, has the ability to change the complexion of a game in a few overs. His off-spin is a great utility/value add.

2. Mohd Azharuddin: Azhar's batting is a sight for the gods. Silken elegance is the rule of Azhar's batting. Watching Azhar in full flow, is like watching an artist going into a zone. Wristy, Azhoo bhai can hit the same ball on either side of the wicket at his own discretion (VVS is a carbon copy of Azhar but technically more correct) thus reducing a bowler to a joke. His razor sharp fielding can easily save 20-30 runs in a single game not to mention some unbelivable catching than can turn a half-chance into full.

3. Inzamam Ul Haq: Inzy, like Aravinda, is a class act. He plays his shots with lazy elegance and is also a technically correct batsman like Aravinda. Every shot that Inzy plays is a sheer delight to watch. Being a big man, Inzy's biggest strength is, besides playing proper cricketing shots, that he can really press the accelerator pedal during slog overs by playing big shots. He can consistently hit the ball out of the ground. However, his sloppy running between the wickets could be his undoing. Outside of the slip cordon, Inzy is not one of the best fielders in the world.

4. Carl Hooper: Hooper is tailor made for limited overs cricket. A very elegant batsman, he is extremely effective in the middle overs by keeping the score board ticking without taking big risks. As far as his batting is concerned his best position is 4, since Hooper needs some time to settle in before unleashing his big shots. A very calculative batsman, Hooper can step up the gas by playing some really big shots, if required. Very good player of spin and uses his feet very well against them. Like Azhar, Hooper is a very sharp catcher and can pull off some stunning catches on the field and yet still make them look ridiculously easy. His off-spinners can make him fill-up the fifth bowler slot full time. Hooper can easily provide a solid batting all rounder option.

5. Andy Flower: Consistency is one of the biggest forte of Flower. For a left hander, his batting is not necessarily elegant but he brings a workman like discipline to the middle order. And he is particularly adept in holding the batting together. In situations of collapse, he can really anchor one end safe. Keeping in mind that Gilly is out of picture as an opener (), Flower provides the wicket keeping option for free besides his batting.

6. Stephen Flemming: Flemming is best known for his shrewd captaincy and maximizing the minimum resources he always had in his hand. But his batting (particularly in limited overs cricket) is very understated. Flemming takes time to settle down, but once he sets his eye in, he can play some really free flowing strokes. Like Inzy and Hooper, Flemming can also play some big shots when the asking rate climbs up.

Couple of other nominations that crossed my mind for #4 slot and below are my reasons:

7. Steve Tikolo: It is very unfortunate that Tikolo played for Kenya. If only, had he played for any other Test playing nation, he would have had a career that would have fulfilled his potential. From whatever little I have seen of him, Tikolo, is a class act. Very powerfully built, Tikolo can play shots all round the wicket with elan. His stylish knock of 65 in his debut ODI aganist India in '96 WC had class written over it. "Oru pAnai sothukku, oru sOru padham stuff". Superb execution of strokes that was. He also scored a century against India few years later, I think. Easily the best batsman Kenya has produced till data (IMO), Tikolo is just ideal at #4 and is worthy enough for a world XI conisderation.

8. Kevin Pieterson: Big hitter, consistent scorer in ODI cricket with a pretty good average, Pieterson is not a bad choice to consider for #4, as well. He may lack the elegance of some of the other batsman in my list but nevertheless effective.

RR,
In ODI, Lara is better at #3 than #4. In ODI, it is always good to send your best batsman early so that he can utilize the maximum of the 50 overs his side gets to play. :) Plus LAra has scored lot of mathc winning centuires batting at #3. (His 169 vs. SL At Sharjah, century against SA in '96 Wc Quarter final, centruay against Australia in Brisbane chasing 290+ etc.) all came batting at #3.

Test cricket is a different ball game, and over there Lara's ideal slot (like Sachin) is #4.

So, I'd happy if Lara wins the #3 position.

reg Hussey, yes.. can be an ideal #5 with his stats... but still, we have a pretty good # 5 batsman post 90. # 5 will be the most interesting poll, I assume... :D

If Lara wins #3, even if he gets 100 nominations here, we'll not put him up as a poll option. We'll chose the next 10 in terms of highest nominations received in this thread.

But if he loses there, and there is no nomination here, then there is the danger of Lara not being in the poll here - that is 19th May's point, although I guess that would be too procedural an approach and we understand the general consensus in favour of Lara being a contender for #4, if he loses #3.

Plum you seems to be one-sided. :)

Our fellow hubbers including a moderator  made me to look at the statistics of other players. Then look at few other nominations too. They too are hyped players.

Ijaz Ahmed at #4 (everyone knows he never possessed a good technique and he is inconsistent too and not to tell about his batting style) solla pOnA enga ooru pAlkAran avana mAdhiri Aduvaru. However, he played well against Australia whether at home or away. He is a better horizontal bat player.

Played 52 matches, scored 1963 runs, at an average of 43.62 runs, strike rate of 75.55. Scored 2 100s and 14 50s.

Steve Tikolo at #4

Aravinda, Inzy can be considered already.

Let's give hubbers a couple of more days to choose among the rest. By Friday, I will put up the poll.
Hubbers of the world, unite and nominate among the choices above.

Let's also define what we want from a #5:
Given we have Sachin, surya, lara and(likely) aravinda,b should we go for a solid rebuilder( a la Dravid/Kallis) or go with stats or look for batting all-rounder or what?

Kallis avg in ODI is 45.84, I agree his strike rate is not great, but 72.77 is a descent one considering his long career. His last 10 ODI innings includes 1 Century and 5 half centuries. In the last few years his strike rate is > 80.

He is a handy bowler too. I am surprised why this hub always underrate him?

These players has more than one nominations. So they get qualified for the poll

1. A'De Silva
2. Inzamam
3. Azhar
4. Hooper

Following players are disqualified as one hubber has nominated and the same hubber has nominated one of the player who has already qualified for the poll.

S.Fleming, S.Tikolo, K.Pietersen, D.Martyn, A.Jadeja, Steve Waugh, Cronje, I.Ahmed, Yuvraj.

So the remaining one hubber (Honest) nominated players are

Kevin Pietersen would be a better contender than McMillan @ #4, IMHO.

Also, for #10 option in the poll - I request Plum/Sridhar to pick from one of these 3 - Tikolo or Martyn or Cronje.

Tikolo/Martyn - Same blood. Elegance personified and a treat to watch at #4. They are a great choice as they an build their innings nicely and potentially even bat through their innings.

Cronje - Besides being a very effective bat at #4, he can unleash some big shots (if required) during the slog overs. Also, his medium pace ca easily fill the fifth bowler slot.

Some highlights of above stats

At #4
1. Sangakarra has better average and S/R than Tendulkar
2. Yuvraj Singh has the best S/R but average is only above Tikolo, Fleming and....Lara!
3. Lara has the third lowest average at a median strike rate among this list
4. Tikolo and Fleming are bottom of the list
5. Kallis has a better average than most of the nominations here and crowd favourites. At a decent strike rate. Plus his bowling skills
6. There are two candidates who didnt crop up in Hub discussions for #4
a) AB Devilliers has an average of 50+ at S/R 88+!
b) Bevan has a whopping average of 59 but at S/R 69, which is the lowest among this bunch.
7. There is one name no hubber might have imagined in his wildest dreams - Scott Styris!
8. One more surprising candidate - M Clarke - 2700 runs at 45+ at 74.38. The S/R, though higher than Yousuf, Dravid, Kallis, and more or less similar to Martyn, Lara, Inzy, Jaya, etc needs to be put in perspective - in that the modern era, 74 is a below par S/R as compared to th e90's when it was a top S/R.

Dravid is not a bad saaice for 4 given we have quick scorers, flamboyant stroke makers - Jaysuriya, Sachin & Lara at the first 3 spots. However, for Dravid, the more lower he bats in the order the more risky it would be. If I were a coach or captain and I'm given both Lara & Dravid in my ODI squad by the selectors - then I would play Dravid @ 3 and Lara@ 4 simply because the more lower in the order that Dravid bats, the more discomfort for both Dravid and the team. So, if I pick Dravid, it directly conflicts with my wish that Lara should bat at #3.

OTOH, Martyn is more fluent @4 as well as equally attractive as a batsman. Seyavaradhan is also fluent/stylish but sometimes he is a nervous starter and has shown tendencies to struggle a bit on bouncy Aus/SA wickets against quality quicks.

Among Dravid/Martyn/Seyavaradhan - my preference would be Martyn.

And Plum, if you looking for WK-ing options with Dravid, then DeVilliers or McCullum are worthy considerations than Dravid.

With a couple of additional support for Devilliers, I am replacing Jayawardene with Devilliers.
Since enough chance has been given to hubberrs on this poll, I am putting it up right now

Saw WC 96 final highlights. Desilva off break to bowl healy

I dont think he is a part time bowler - he is just a regular bowler who happened to focus more on batting. I think at any stage of his career, he could have stopped and become an off-spinner who bats, if he had wanted.
