Kallis' 37th century looks like the only aggressive century (w.r.to his playing style), he made so far in his career. I have to call him as Geoffrey Boycott Ver.2.0 because of his playing style which mainly depends on accumulating rather than stroke-making. His playing style may not be pleasing to eyes but he is Mr.consistent. Needs two more to overtake Ricky.

I did not get any solid reasons so far,

1. Moonju pudikala.
2. Slow-a aaduraan.
3. Batting style nalla illa.
4. Boring all-rounder.
5. Ellame Ok...aanalum pudikala.

At the end of the day performance matters and he is doing that consistently. What India miss is this kind of all rounder genius.

What India miss is this kind of all rounder genius.

Two decades ago, India had witnessed one similar to him and his name is Ravishankar Shastri and in fact he played in all positions. I think he is the only player to play in all positions in both Tests and ODIs. On those days, he played the same way as Kallis. :P

Puliyan_Biryani
22nd November 2010, 06:28 PM
Kallis is consistent and almost always bats in a bubble (). But he doesn't seem to have the genius of other greats. No doubt he is a good man to have in your team, but he won't win you the key moments (seizing the game, et al). Also his game looks too rigid, so not very pleasing on the eye either.

P_R, there are a few instances when his batting cost/almost cost the team in ODIs. Champions Trophy game against India 2002, World Cup game against Aus in 2007 (they were chasing 370+) and even the 434 chase against Aus.

One ODI knock which I really like of Kallis came in the last match of Steve Waugh. In the tri-series, SA and NZ had pushed Australia to a situation where Aussies had to win with a bonus point against SA to qualify for the finals. Aussies stuttered their way to 280 and had to restrict SA under 225 to qualify for the final. It was the perfect setting for Kallis and he made a chanceless 100 against a very good attack and some attacking fields.

Kallis seems to be playing freely in recent times because of Amla and slowly started to come out of his defensive shell. If he started to play like this, surely SA can score more victories in near future.

If we look at Statistics of Kallis, it is simply amazing. He is the only player to score more than 10,000 runs, more than 50 fifties, got more than 250 wickets, 5 wickets in an innings, took more than 100 catches in both versions of the game. In pure statistical terms, I think, he might be the greatest ever to play with both bat and ball than any other in the history of cricket. Most probably his records may not get broken in the near future.

Sri Lanka in South Africa 2011-12

Kallis targetting 2015 World Cup

Firdose Moonda
January 9, 2012

In 16 years of international cricket, Jacques Kallis has scored centuries against all nine other Test playing nations, has been part of series wins in Australia and England and has seen numerous ODI series victories. One thing he does not have, though, is a World Cup medal and it is that missing piece that is driving him to try to continue playing international cricket until at least 2015.

"The one thing I want to try and achieve is to be part of a team that can win a World Cup. That's a goal of mine," Kallis said after South Africa's victory in the third Test against Sri Lanka, in Cape Town. Kallis has played 317 ODIs, including five World Cups. He will turn 37 this year and will be 39 by the time the next World Cup takes place, in Australia and New Zealand, in 2015.

At the start of the summer local media expressed concern about what they called Kallis' dwindling reflexes, after he was worked over by Australia's 18-year-old fast bowler Pat Cummins, who trouble Kallis with his bouncer. Kallis said he did not read the reports and was only told about it by friends. His response on the field, though, was fierce.

He scored 224, his highest Test score, against Sri Lanka at Newlands, an aggressive pull shot the hallmark of his innings. He also extinguished doubts about his reflexes by taking six catches, five of which were at second slip. To cap it off, he took three wickets in Sri Lanka's second innings. It was an emphatic way to celebrate his 150th Test match and a screaming declaration of what he still has to offer South African cricket. "I couldn't have asked for it to have worked out better," Kallis said. "You dream of performances like that."

While he appeared closer to a teenager than someone entering his late 30s in Cape Town, Kallis has acknowledged that his workload needs to be managed. He did not bowl in the first innings at Newlands, after his marathon effort with the bat, because his captain Graeme Smith felt he "would not get much out of him."

Managing Kallis' bowling load could be key to prolonging his career. That could prove tricky due to the make-up of South Africa's bowling attack. With three aggressive fast bowlers and a legspinner in the side, Kallis is required to play a containing role with the ball, and if needed, to, in his words, "carry," the attack. In the shorter form of the game, he is unlikely to be used in the same capacity and less work with the ball could be vital as he targets 2015.

"I will take it year by year, month by month and game by game," he said. "No-one has the right to play in this side [without earning his place]. You've got to put in the performances for that. As long as I am enjoying it and putting in the performances, and the body holds, there's no reason for me to stop yet."

Kallis has been named in South Africa's squad for the first two ODIs against Sri Lanka, after which the selectors will decide on the group for the remaining three matches. Kallis said he hopes to play in all five fixtures although he recognises that he may be forced to pick which matches to play in the future.

"It looks like I will play all five matches. I said to Gary [Kirsten, the South Africa coach], we will have a look at it after the first two and we'll make a call from there. That will be the standard going forward. I have to be clever if I want to make it to the next World Cup."

Food for thought from Kallis intree:

You know how many ever Test/ODI series wins abroad or in home still doesn't match up to the aura of a Cricket world cup win. Especially the 50 overs one. PR :lol2: :poke:. And that thought is evident among modern day cricketers as well. In many ways I feel glad even among the 6 losses now that we have won the world cup last year/.

He also happens to be the ultimate modern allrounder, and not simply because of those 550 international wickets. After all, his average exceeds all three rivals in Tests, ODIs and T20s. Indeed, of those who have had six or more innings across all formats in the past two years , only de Villiers and Alastair Cook average more than Kallis' 60.28. That he has adapted so belligerently to the shortest form, confounding his critics, is perhaps the greatest tribute to his ability to meet a challenge. Witness, too, the response to that pair against Sri Lanka in Durban, his first in Tests, which he followed with twin centuries, match-winning ones, in the very next encounter. Call him Ever-Ready; call him Duracell; just don't call him spent.

Jacques Kallis to donate to Yuvraj Singh Foundation

http://www.dnaindia.com/sport/report_jacques-kallis-to-donate-to-yuvraj-singh-foundation_1658934

Kallis said he would like to make a contribution to Yuvraj Singh’s Foundation. “I would like to announce that I will be making a personal donation to the Yuvraj Singh Foundation. As we all know, Yuvraj is going through a difficult time at the moment battling a serious illness and I went through a similar experience when my own father died of cancer at a relatively young age,” Kallis said. He hoped the South African side would wish him speedy recovery. “I am sure the entire Proteas’ squad and indeed the Cricket South Africa family joins me in wishing him a speedy recovery,” Kallis remarked.

How accurate it is, I don't know. Have decisions improved? I think they have but we have got to accept that there are probably one or two that, as cricketers, we will think 'I'm not so sure', but maybe that's an improvement on absolute shockers which is what you wanted to take out of the game. We are getting that right to a degree but I am not convinced how accurate it really is."

It is instances like these, where the predicted path differs vastly from what is expected that has caused "plenty" of members of the South African team to be concerned about the system. "Sometimes when it hits the batter and you think that's close and it ends up being a long way away or vice versa," Kallis said. "I don't think there are any guys that are 100% sure that that thing is as accurate as they want to make it out to be. They keep saying it but I'm not so sure and I think 99% of cricketers will say that."

South Africa, including Kallis, accept the system as it stands but Kallis said he believes the players should be allowed to speak their minds about the DRS. "We are still allowed our opinion as cricketers and we are still allowed to say how we feel sometimes decisions go."
Kallis also had a suggestion to improve the system. "Maybe what they can do is have the review system that shows where it pitched and where it hits and let the third umpire make the call from there so you still give benefit of the doubt to the batter," he said, stressing that the need for the on-field umpires is still there despite the technology at the game's disposal.

"You don't want to take the umpires' job away but you do want the right decision. The predicted path, for me, is the worry. The Snickometer and Hot Spot and everything else is pretty decent."

Virtual Eye creator Ian Taylor has this to say

Taylor revealed that initially even he did not want to use it when DRS was first proposed. "We were opposed to using the technology for DRS. We didn't think a tool that was made for television should decide the results of matches," he said. "When DRS was proposed, the first thing we said was not to use the predictive path."

Dave Richardson aka Hawkeye's suitcase case :banghead:

"We [the ICC] are 100% satisfied that the ball-tracking provided as accurate a result as could have been achieved and the correct result." He said. "As far as we're concerned, the majority of players are in favour of using DRS with the technology used."

The ICC continues to face questions on the implementation of the DRS, with ball-tracking being the most concentrated target of skepticism over the system. Richardson said continued monitoring has satisfied the ICC that it is as precise as it needs to be. "We've been assessing or reviewing those ball-trackings on a continuous basis for the last three or four years and are confident in saying they are more than 97% reliable, and are accurate to the degree of accuracy that is required," Richardson said.

When SRT said the same, English media had a laugh at him by alleging small-mindedly at every possible opportunity that he is afraid that big-player immunity granted to him by fawning umpires(WHAT A JOKE THAT IS, BY ITSELF! But then that's the nature of Englishmen and Anglo_Saxons - ace the system, perform thagidu thatoms for their benefit, and then quietly spread rumours that the opponent is doing thagidu thathoms*) when he is opposing DRS. Let's see what they have to say now.
* Guardian Correspondent Mike Selvey is particularly guilty of this - and many other potshots at Tendulkar like implyinh he lords over Indian Cricket and it is his selfishness that is preventing youngsters from being blooded etc; - I hope he gets eaten by bears like the children that mocked at Prophet Elisha(Or some name like that)

Kallis to retire after Durban Test
Jacques Kallis (http://www.espncricinfo.com/southafrica/content/player/45789.html) has announced that he will retire from Test cricket after the Boxing Day match against India.
Cricket South Africa tweeted the news on Wednesday afternoon. In a statement, Kallis said: "It wasn't an easy decision, with Australia around the corner and the success this team is enjoying, but I feel the time is right. I don't see it as goodbye, I still have a lot of hunger to push South Africa to that World Cup in 2015 if I am fit and performing."

Congrats to Jack Kallis on a sensational career.

Still remember watching him in his debut year during 1996 India tour of South Africa and he came across as a classy batsman and a capable bowler.

He is a bit like Mahendra Singh Dhoni, you lose him, you need 3 players to replace. Batting, Bowling and Slip Catching.
