I'm not that big a fan of her mother roles off-late. But just the fact she had the most expressive face & was able to a create memorable character without much fuss in Nayakan (would say she slightly deserved over Archana's Veedu which won NA best actress, mostly coz it was more of an 'art film') lingers in a 80's child's mind. Archana/Saranya were in deed refreshing change coz the idea of performance in 80's were all about BR's & KB's caricatures (clue: Su-ha-si-ni)

what i think is... this award given for a younger actor is very inspiring...
this will surely inspire the other contemporary, emerging actors to choose offbeat/performance oriented movies instead of doing ordinary movies....
in that pov, even if its been awarded to rajini, it would not be much of an inspiration to other actors as it would only be seen as a lifetime award for rajini as already he is in the end of his career.

So far with bala though he is a good director , I am seeing repetative pattern in his movies.
Poor, disabled people's subject ..
On the other hand Vetri , has proved that he can win a National Award even with a commerical script now thats something.

People Please Please don't force bala to turn in to another medicore director like MR , Lets demand little more creative and global scoped projects !

what i think is... this award given for a younger actor is very inspiring...
this will surely inspire the other contemporary, emerging actors to choose offbeat/performance oriented movies instead of doing ordinary movies....
in that pov, even if its been awarded to rajini, it would not be much of an inspiration to other actors as it would only be seen as a lifetime award for rajini as already he is in the end of his career.
and would be very encouraging for dhanush too, to perform better...

yes its good for TFI no doubt..but just look NA deserving performances like mullum malarum Rajini,MMKR Kamal,Mudhal mariyadai Sivaji,Sethu Vikram..idhellam pakkumbodhu Adukalathuku vandhadhu konjam kashtama irukku..but Danush is a gr8 prospect..hope this will inspire himself to give performances :)

Congratulations to Aadukalam team.
But I have a doubt about how they give awards. If the jury decides one film as 'BEST FILM', how come best director and best screenplay can be given to another film. Eventhough I understand that they acknowledge the producer here, but how come withut a director and screenplay, a film can be term as BEST.

But the otherway round, like giving "Best Director" might not bag Best film which is understandable.
But if Best Screenplay is also given to the same film along with Best director, how come it will miss the "Best film" category. So in this scenario on what terms they consider this film is not THE BEST.

This is definitely millions times more justified than last year's hokum, which didn't bring any reaction from you guys ..

Or come up with other choices. Haven't seen the Malayalam film to comment on that. But from what I've seen, Indhi cinema is having a poor run off-late. I could perhaps make a case for Prateik Babbar in Ghobi dhaat / Suriya in RC part II ahead of Thambi ramiah. That is all.

I understand your point. So you mean to say that these two films might have tied and they distributed the award? Even if this is the case, the distribution is not balanced. They have awarded all major categories to Aadukalam (direction, original screenplay, best actor (it is shared), editing), but the malayalam film bagged best film, cinematography, background score with best acting (shared). Only two major categories for Malayalam, but still won best film without it's director and/or screenplay.
Anyway good news for TFI bagging good number of awards this time.

It’s raining national awards in Kollywood as Tamil cinema reaped a rich harvest at the 58thNational Film Awards which was announced on Thursday in New Delhi.

After a week of the Pithamagan of tinsel town, K. Balachandar, being chosen for the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Tamil cinema bagging as many as 14 National Awards in top categories including Best Actor to Dhanush for his performance in Aadukalam, Best Actress to Saranya Ponvannan for Thenmerkku Paruvakkattru and Best Director to Vetrimaran for Aadukalam.

Bollywood, which otherwise dominates the National Award scenario, was pushed to the background this year with Salman Khan starrer Dabangg and Ishqiy featuring Naseerudeen Shah being the only two films to pick up awards in major categories.

The jury members made a special mention about Dhanush and acknowledged the young actor’s good work.

“His is a riveting performance that fuses character and actor into one.” They also praised superstar Rajnikanth’s son-in-law for his raw and nuanced portrayal of a cocky young man Karuppu who learns his lessons about life the hard way in Aadukalam. He is the youngest actor to have won the award.

It did not come as a surprise when Saranya Ponvannan picked up the Best Actress Award for her offbeat role of a doting mother from a remote village. Her spellbinding performance had been critically acclaimed by the entire media and audiences.

For director Vetrimaran it was a double dhamaka. The new-age filmmaker won the Best Director Award for his path-breaking movie Aadukalam and his narrative style and presentation bagged him the Best Screenplay Award. It was the sixth time that ace lyricist Vairamuthu was adjudged the Best Lyricist at the national scene.

Meanwhile Rajnikanth’s Endhiran got the Best Special Effects Awards and Best Production Design Award.

Producer Aascar Ravichandran said, “There has been a healthy trend in Tamil cinema in the recent past. It is heart warming to see that the attention of National Awards has turned to Tamil films which also proves that Kollywood films do not lag behind.”

Award winners speak

VETRIMAARAN : Best Director and Best Screenplay Writer – Aadukalam

Vetrimaaran, the former assistant to ace filmmaker/cinematographer Balu Mahendra, was chocking with joy when this newspaper contacted him.

“I am not able to speak in a hurry! All said and done, my happiness knows no bound! Aadukalam which has bagged top honors at National Awards has made us all proud!”

SEENU RAMASWAMY: Best Film in Regional category – Thenmerkku Paruvakaattru

“It is a first Indian landscape film made in lines of Iranian movies. It is a poignant story of selfless love of the mother for her son shot in a dry barren land near Theni. No sooner I finished the script; I felt Saranya was the best choice for the mother role. And she did exactly what I expected out of her! And today the result is in front of you! We never made any compromises.

I want to thank Vairamuthu sir whose lyrics brought life to several emotions, my producer Captain Shibu Isac who came forward to produce it when no one was willing to make the flick and MLA Michael Royappan sir who marketed it in the best possible way. I want to dedicate this award to Lord Muruga, my mother, and Parvathy Amma of Valvettithurai village.

DHANUSH - Best Actor Award - Aadukalam

Aadukalam was Dhanush’s career best ever performance remarked the critics who watched the film .

“I am extremely rejoiced! . I thank the National Award jury for selecting Aadukalam, a film which director Vetrimaran made with a lot of conviction right from the beginning we started to work. I thank my parents, my brother Selva and Vetrimaaran for the faith he had in me for the path-breaking script. I am also happy for Dinesh master, editor Kishore and the entire team who worked for the flick. I dedicate this award to Rajini sir and pray for his speedy recovery."

DINESH - Best Choreographer - Aadukalam

The dance master was in Switzerland working for a Tamil and a Telugu film when DC contacted him. “I am really sad that I was away from Chennai, not able to share my joy over the very big honour. Though, I have got state and other awards, this is the first time I am getting National Award. I dedicate this award to the entire Aadukalam team."

"I want to thank actor Dhanush who made this happen to me! He is such a normal and simple person and lived the role given to him which made my work easy in this particular song."

SARANYA PONVANNAN – Best Actress – Thenmerkku Paruvakaattru

“I am extremely happy that my hard work has been recognized! We all worked under difficult conditions and I must thank my director Seenu Ramaswamy for the faith he had in me when he offered this offbeat character which I have not attempted at! It’s a special film in my career and incidentally Thenmerkku .. is my 100th film."

The actress who started her career playing opposite Kamal Haasan in the cult film Nayagan has come a long way in her career panning 23 years.

“I dedicate this award to my husband Ponvannan who has been a constant support in my life, my children and my dad Raj."

VAIRAMUTHU: Best Lyricist – Thenmerkku Paruvakaattru

"This is the 6th time I have been getting this honour. I am all the more happy that I will be receiving the award along with veteran K.Balachandar sir as well as young actor Dhanush. Thenmerkku…..is not a film! It is life on canvas!"

"Normally, the music is composed for lyrics after the director narrates the script to the lyricist and explains the situations where songs are required. But, here I had a different experience. I watched the entire movie and then wrote the lyrics I knew the film would bag a few awards for its beautiful content. It talks about the love of a simple uneducated selfless woman for her only son."

"I want to thank its director Seenu Ramaswamy, producer Shibu Isac and music composer Rahnandhan."

THAMBI RAMAIAH: Best Actor in a supporting role - Mynaa

“I am happy and it’s all God’s grace! The entire movie was shot is rough mountain and forest terrain. We all worked very hard for the movie which turned out to be a huge hit. I am really grateful to Prabhu Solomon for giving me this opportunity and taking me to the national level."

(http://thatstamil.oneindia.in/movies/specials/2011/05/20-angadi-theru-not-worth-any-award-aid0091.html)

If so, can't forgive the jury. We know the awards committee about their inconsistency, but not ignorant to this level. Very disappointed.

enna kodumaiya idhu no awards for Angadi Theru

IMO,
Best Film : Angadi Theru
Best Direction : Vasantha Balan
Best Screenplay : Aadukalam - Vetrimaran
Best Actor : Dhanush (Should have been to Karthi for Paruthiveeran WTH Ameer too didn't win)

Angadi Theru is a Masterpiece and the movie deserves much work ethics than these awards.
Aadukalam draws lot of inspirations from other movies 6 is 6much for the jury to pick. Gandhi thaatha porantha naalaikku muttai kudukkum bothu konjam volunga pagunthu kuduthurukkalam idhulayum paara patchama. yaar yaaru panela iruntha?
