With respect to the poll, I am not sure if I should go with Podhuvaaga emmanasu or vetti veru kind of songs. The max credit for Aagaya Gangai goes to IR. Even before MV enters, the song goes to a different level after the initial humming.
An anecdote MSV shared recently in a TV program: TR Mahalingam used for high pitch songs, wanted to sing a low pitched one. While V-R gave it, GR happend to cross by and felt that it was not a good idea. Later when the song was released GR called and appreciated them and the song eventually became a hit

Adi Adum poonguyile - very haunting song if you have seen the film. Kali - title name is taken from Mullum Malarum, conveniently of course, since Kali's script was penned by Mahendran. Not a great film, it's okay, but this song sticks in your mind way after the movie finishes....

The year 1980 had a few more Rajini movies as well - anbukku nAn adimai (all SPB), Johny (one SPB, all others female voices), ellAm un kai rAsi (SPB)...

nAn pOtta savAl had MV :-) The sweet 'sugam sugamE thodathodaththAnE' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2202'&lang=en) with VJ, both the melody and the instrumental portions are quite nice in this IR song.

There's another MV solo in this movie nAttukkuLLa sila narikaL irukkudhu (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2199'&lang=en) which had some air time and was made fun of for its animal sounds (i.e. by my cousin & me):-)

pollAthavan too was 1980 it seems and a total SPB show there, no MV. (MSV music).

So, 1980 accounting over...a few solid hits by MV in Rajini movies there...and poised to increase the count in 1981...

He narrated this while talking about maalayitta mangai and IIRC he said this song went on to be the big hit of the film. I too thought it was STM, but they played another soothing one which is naan andri yaar varuvaar. The year was 1958 and GR was still on top. So a semi classical could have become the topper during the release. But later on a light music kind of song (STM) could have become more famous.

As I wanted to post a link to the song, searched Google and found this being quoted in dhool as well: http://www.dhool.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7117 //

Let's visit 1981 for Rajini / MV combo...

garjanai had those two terrific MV numbers.

oru ooril oru maharAni avaL ullAsakkalaikaLil thani gnAni (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0923'&lang=en) had some terrific orchestration from rAsA, kObamAi mirattum guitar / synth in the prelude before MV starts singing is among my all-time fav sounds! Also some nice trumpeting gives this song a very majestic feel!

Contrast this with that sweet duet with UR, enna sugamAna ulagam (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0921'&lang=en)! Sweet melody, grand orchestration and what not! (I think the youtube of this song was posted in this thread sometime back, Rajini-Madhavi on this disney-whole-new-world kind of ride on a kattil IIRC)

Then there was this thEdum deivam nEril vandhadhO (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1660'&lang=en) by MV-SJ for kazhugu. Though this is lesser of all the songs from that movie (the others being oru poovanaththula, ponnOviyam, kAdhalennum kOvil) quite interesting one.

The cracking 'neRRikkaN' too happened in the same 1981 where MV enjoyed 2 numbers (compared to just one each by KJY / SPB, this was the first KB product with IR's music).

mAppiLLaikku mAman manasu (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2357'&lang=en) was a typical fusion in the standard "jugalbandi-like" format (i.e. one can spot both genres separately and not the organic mix that usually happens with rAsA songs, another later day ejjAmple would be 'kavidhai kELungaL' which was again for a KB product).

One of my all-time fav!

Then there was this jazzy rAjA rAni jAkki (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2359'&lang=en) with SPS, another interesting concoction:-)

1981 also had the hilarious 'thillu-mullu' for RK under KB & music by MSV.

SPB took two numbers (thillumullu thillumully uLLamellAm kallumuLLu & rAgangaL pathinARu) while MV had to be content with the 'thangangaLE thambikaLE madhurai veeran solluRathaikkELunga' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGOLD1680'&lang=en) song - kuppai song IMO & possibly the worst moments in an otherwise excellent movie.

Same way for another RK movie of the same year - this time director SPM & music by MSV - 2 relatively better songs to SPB which were themselves so-so (vArungaL onRai sErungaL & sonnAl thANE puriyum) while MV was given a raw deal O malligappoo (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/album.php?ALBID=ALBOLD00939&lang=en)another hopeless song that hardly got noticed...

There was another big hit for Rajini in 1981 - the remake of deewAr - "thee" by Balaji with MSV music. It had the famous LRE number 'vArE vA rAjA idhu indhira lOgam' with the "qurbani" sound ('aap jaisA koi' had that famous 'kkovvvv' sound and a similar one got used in this, but repeats thrice).

Coming to MV, he enjoyed one song here - along with a couple other male voices subbaNNA sonnAraNNa sudhandhiram vandhadhunnu (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGOLD1687'&lang=en) Interesting tune but very boring orchestration, IMO.

BTW, this is a local's take of Bharathi's 'AduvOmE paLLuppAduvOmE Anandha sudhandhiram adaindhu vittOmenRu' and the poet is given the 'subbaNNA' title (Subramaniya Bharathi).

With that, I think, the 1981 combo of MV-Rajini is done, quite a few hit numbers in that year - slightly more than 1980.

In any case, by this time MV was among the much sought-after male voices in TFM, possibly second only to SPB. KJY & PJ were going steady as well but TMS was on his way out. ('en kadhai mudiyum nEramidhu' had been blamed for that...TR  )

1982 had this sweet pattu vaNNa chElaikkAri (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0849'&lang=en) solo by MV for Rajinikanth.

mullai arumbu, mellaththirumbu, enna kuRumbu (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3558'&lang=en)

Rajini had one of his biggest hits in 1982 - moonRu mugam - and the MD was Shankar-Ganesh.

Both the songs that I recall from that are by SPB - dEvAmrutham & nAn seydha kuRumbu. thiraippAdal has these numbers as well.

Is there any MV number in that movie? If none, that was a bad miss by MV...

Devar films 'Ranga' seems to be from 1982 as well.

This had the famous SPB-MV duet 'pattukkOtta ammALu pAththupputtA nammALu' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGSHK0127'&lang=en)that had some typical Shankar-Ganesh sounds (some techno, some lead guitar) and proved to be a very successful album for the duo. Funnily, they had MV for the parts with "western" beats and SPB for the dappAnguththu parts :-)

There's another song that sounds like a Hindi import, a MV-PS duet azhagAnA (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGSHK0126'&lang=en) - MV shouting 'rangA, rangA' is quite funny :lol2:

I guess we're done with the 1982 stuff of Rajini-MV combo.

Moving on to 1983...quite a few hits there...

aduththa vArisu had the outrageous kuRumbu Asai nooRu vakai (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0107'&lang=en)where MV did exceptionally well. It was a roaring hit song and is popular to this day. I believe there's a remix of this (never had a chance to listen to the YSR version).

We have this song as an example in one of the poll choices :-) One vote so far and not too bad considering the fact that there are only 9 votes total. One of the most dismal polls on the hub:-(

AVM's pAyum puli (1983) had 2 MV numbers.

Interestingly, both duets had PS singing with MV - somewhat rare combination for Rajini's commercial movies.

poththukkittu ooththudhadi vAnam (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2607'&lang=en) is a very sweet song with an interesting rhythm pattern. Personally, I would have preferred to have SJ in this number and it would have been a bigger hit as hers suited the 80's commercials (& the heroine). However, the voice of PS is always very sweet and song is evergreen. My most fav part of this song is the first interlude - terrific!

Appakkada annakkiLi (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2606'&lang=en) wasn't a dappAnguththu despite the first line suggesting such a number. It was a themmAngu / folk duet like any other rAsA number with some echo effects and had enough air time. Almost sounding like a MSV number, this one.

Both these songs had their share of other media as well (bus-teakkadai-functions-recording centers)...

Param,
As you could have noticed from majority of my hub posts, in the appreciation of movie arts I'm primarily visiRi to rAsA music :-) All other fandoms are wound around it and so the periya-chinna visiRiththanams to singers are corollary.

Going purely by "voice", my #1 choice is KJY. Even SPB comes after him, though close. Obviously, SPB is millions of miles ahead of KJY in versatility.

Like in your case, MV's "voice" comes way behind - i.e. after those yesteryear stalwarts (TMS / AMR / PBS / PJ).

OTOH, if you look at TFM as a whole package (prelude, interludes, orchestration & singing), there are a number of MV songs that are in my most-fav books, thanks to his association with rAsA :-)

oru koottukkiLiyAka (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2621'&lang=en) is a sweet song with standard rAsA arrangements where Sivaji sung and acted as aNNan for Rajini.

app, ditto on NT's influence. I rate Orukoottu KiliyAga more than all the other songs in that film, not necessarily because of my fondness for NT, but MV's voice flawlessly glides through the song. The pathos version of a charanam appears when Rajini meets his brother first time after many years. Ooraterinjikitten is a stunner mainly because of Rajini's performance in that song.

DR KJY has given amazing hits under IR than MV, sadly no one is posting in his thread! :(

Voted for suave duets even though I like all of the options put up there for MV. The song that I had in my mind was Paattu Enge from Poo Vizhi Vaasalile. Just amazing singing by MV, especially towards the ending of the charanam.

I rate Orukoottu KiliyAga more than all the other songs in that film, not necessarily because of my fondness for NT, but MV's voice flawlessly glides through the song.
+1. It's special to me, because this is the first song, where I thought MV completely replaced TMS for NT. It's that perfectly suited for NT.

Rajini's 100th movie seemed to feature KJY a lot but MV too had his share in this...

This 1985-er had this MV song (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3419'&lang=en) which is not that much known (at least not familiar to me).

OTOH, this KJY-MV number (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3418'&lang=en) sounds very familiar...

'un kaNNil neer vazhindhAl' - a BM / Rajinikanth movie (rare combo) seems to have a comedy song by MV : iLamai idhO idhO (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3777'&lang=en), possibly for VKR...

Someone please confirm if this is really MV...

Well, as per raaga.com (http://www.raaga.com/channels/tamil/album/T0002985.html) this song is indeed by MV, with a lady singer named "Kousalya"

RK-MV combo of 1985 ended with that crazy number.

1986 had the remake of AB's Mard as 'mAveeran' with rAsA music.

It was a total MV show, as a male singer and Chitra was the only female singer as well :-)

'odhungu odhungu' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2014'&lang=en) was a terrific adi-dhadi number and I cannot forget the fantastic way the 'mallissEri orchestra' of Coimbatore played the song on Palakkad maidAn that year. Terrific!

appadiyE nAdi narambellAm adhirndhu pOnadhu!

I clearly recall the popularity of this orchestra those days (whose patron was a beedi factory)!

Resuming this listing of MV songs...

There was another Rajinikanth movie in 1986, with Satyaraj - Mr Bharath.

That had this famous MV number, a duet with SPB :

I came across this song yesterday. From the data that I could gather, S. A. Rajkumar composed
this for the movie "Chinna Poove Mella Pesu". Malaysia Vasudevan was listed as the singer.

Here it is:
