Thanks for the thread app.

I feel he is the most underrated among that generation of singers. As hubber genesis rightly pointed out (in IR section or in a PM I don't remember) one won't find many blogs/fan-sites dedicated to him in the internet when compared with others.

Not a single day passes without me listening to at least 2-3 malaysia songs. Fantastically versatile singer and simply brilliant in expressing subtle emotions. RIP sir.

Btw, App did you mean அள்ளித்தந்த பூமி அன்னையல்லவா / சொல்லித்தந்த வானம் தந்தையல்லவா in the poll or is that a different song?

Thenkizhakku cheemaiyilE is undoubtedly his best with Rahman (sung only 3 other AFAIK). Kizhakku cheemaiyilE is in fact a very unique album. Except KJY all major singers of the 70s/80s/90s (SPB/SJ/MV/PJ/Chitra/Mano) have sung in this album.

There is no Muthal Mariyaathai without Malaysia Vasudevan sir. Starting with Poongaatru Thirumbuma, Yeh Kili Irukku, Yeh Kuruvi, Vettiveru Vaasam and Yeratha Mala Mela all these evergreen earthy melodies cannot be replaced by anyone. Whenever I listen to these songs, my eyes soak in tears just remembering MV sir and the perfect emotion he conveyed in his singing. Truly a great Legend!
My very special MV sir song and it's in my all time top 10 songs and album of any language or any composer.
Poongaatru Thirumbuma? Can God get Him and NT back to earth?

No offence guys, but it does feel weird when you refer to him as Malaysia. I mean, let's say someone from India comes here and becomes famous singer. And we Malaysians refer to him as, say, India Raghu. Instead of calling him Raghu, we refer to him as India. "Wow, India rocks", "India certainly got the nuance right". "India's better than Mano, heck, even my cat is better than Mano". Weird, right?

We refer to him as Vasudevan or in full Malaysia Vasudevan. Just for you info, otherwise no objection. Keep going.

App, options too many, votes would be split considerably.

Anyway, here's my mom's fav, that ultimately became mine because...oh well....

Ah! Now there's a singer who deserves all the accolades pouring in. Voted for Agaya Gangai as he brought in a very manly gentleness - as opposed to Unnikrishnan type gentleness - to luvs emotion. Rajini being the defining onscreen hero for him, it had to be a Rajini song that highlights him.

But as App has nicely prefixed in the poll options, what versatility!

One of my fav lolaayi cum eve tease songs is from Dharmathin Thalaivan. Thagaraaru song in a thaarumaaru voice. MV/Rajni

Opening stanza is absolute nonsense . But who cares. Here is where MV/Rajni/IR create something out of nothing.

(MV and Rajni are just warming up until now. MV with his vocal cords and Rajni with a bottle. The beginning of insanity. Rajni's antics are, what to say:. Well basically he does what he likes and they are perfect for the song.

Jump to stanza 1

Main stanza Rajni, MV and IR are in full form.

MV just blazes through these stanzas. Now there are nothing with the lines. You can call em stupid?. Hey but it is sung by a drunken guy, so take a walk!!. If sung by any other singer the song would be terrifically bland. MV/Rajni are a couple made in heaven. Naasthi atmosphere created. Bang at both ends. The highs and lows achieved in his singing are

I guess the mAmA / mAmi songs could go to either outrageous kuRumbu or misc section.

In reality, most TF songs are multi-genre ones and it's one's perception as to what category it can be placed in. With some, there's a dominant taste and with others it's purely based on bias.

For e.g., where to place 'poongARRu thirumbumA'?

cinematic light? yes
emotional? yes
folk? yes
soft? yes

Same case for a number of songs.

'kOdai kAlakkARRE' - is it western? or the aLLiththandha bhoomi group? Can't say :-)

thiraippadal link for MV (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/singer.php?SGRID=Malaysia%20Vasudevan&lang=en) that lists some 540 songs. There can be some minor errors here and there but such should be negligible.

Almost 95% are IR numbers. There may be other web resources that contain his songs from other MDs, especially Shankar Ganesh with whom he has worked for many numbers.

The MV-SG combo's 'nadaiya mAththu' (kannipparuvaththilE) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGSHK0058'&lang=en) was such a big hit at the time of arrival. The same movie had the 'pattu vaNNa rOsAvAm' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGSHK0060'&lang=en)which was heard in all patti-thotti of TN and popularity levels were greater than of IR songs of the exactly same period.

No confusion, this Rajendran is same as TR :-) Included AA Raj simply to be historically correct as this was the way it was advertised on posters and otherwise at the time of the movie's arrival. The lyrics were by TR and possibly the melody but the orchestra used was AA Raj's and he could have had inputs in the arrangements.

A very catchy number in an album that was a smash hit across the state. It was especially loved by students!

Not embedding the video to avoid cluttering the page with youtubes but video is mildly amusing. Rajini and Madhavi go on a trip in the streets of Chennai on a bed. Yeah, your read that right. Have not seen the film. High budget sci-fi made in 4 languages. Colossal flop I think.

Just a couple of kosuru infos on 'ooru vittu ooru vanthu' :

1. The movie's director, Gangai Amaran, also sings in this song. So, it's a male-male-duet with kuzhuvinar as well.

2. Such was the popularity of this song that the first line got used as the title for a later-day grAmarAjan movie -'ooru vittu ooru vanthu'. The song 'sorgamE enRAlum athu nammoorappOla varumA' from that movie has become some sort of anthem for NRI's...

First big patti-thotti-hit for MV, from my memory (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0395'&lang=en)

As recalled in a few blogs and other articles, MV came into Chennai to act in a movie and stayed back after that. Kept trying for chances as actor / singer / artist while singing on-stage with Pavalar Brothers (Ilayaraja / Gangai Amaran / R D Bhaskar). He also befriended SPB. His first recorded song was with V Kumar it seems but the movie never came out.

MV then sang under MSV's music among a big group for Bharatha vilAs ('indhiya nAdu en veedu') followed by a solo that was popular on radio under Kunnakkudi (kAlam seyyum viLaiyAttu, movie kumAsthAvin makaL).

The badhrakALi song, however, had a much bigger scale of popularity - reverberating along patti-thottees of TN on horn speakers. Obviously it was benefited by the popularity of kEttELe ingE and got played along. Nevertheless, it reached everywhere and got retention value in the minds of people. (Everytime I hear Kannan oru kaikkuzhandhai, after the ArArirO, ArArirO in the end, my mind automatically plays the prelude of oththa roovA - to this day).

MV's second patti-thotti hit was from avar enakkE sontham - surAngani (1977)

The version that's available on thiraippAdal is NOT the original one  I can't relate to the trumpet sounds etc, this may be there on some cassettes / disks but not the one that was on radio when the movie arrived. That had guitar beginning and was a lot more fun.

The youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lUFTMXNzPM) (black & white, Jaishankar in the audience with a team performing this on stage, it seems MV was on screen) is the correct version that was popular and a big hit - especially among students!

Obviously it was not an IR original, it was IR's remix of (possibly) a 'poppisai pAdal' of either Srilankan or such origin.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAyt3YvX2mY&feature=fvw

வரிகள் ஒவ்வொன்றும் அப்படியே comes from bottom of heart...

Year 1978 possibly made MV a key singer in TFM. Like everyone else involved in that movie, MV too got a cracking start to a flourishing Kodambakkam career with 16 vayathinilE. (From that point, every actor / technician of that movie had a different level of recognition / status in the TF field, including Ilayaraja, IMO)

No wonder MV had a strong career after Attukkutti muttai ittu (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0001'&lang=en) & sevvanthippoo mudichcha chellakkA (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0004'&lang=en) !

The first BR movie without MV was nizhalgaL. MV was missed in the next two movies as well : alaigaL Oyvathillai & tik-tik-tik.

I'm not sure when BR did 'vAlibamE vA vA' with Karthik / Radha (whether before kAdhal Oviyam or after, can't remember), this had a sweet PS / MV number :

azhagE unnaikkonjam kaNkaL ezhudha vA, nenjam muzhudhum nee nee nee (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3901'&lang=en)

BTW, Radha seems to have done max # of movies as an actor/actress with BR. (AO, TTT, VVV, KO, OKD, MM)

Awesome singing of all those great numbers (I chose to include two of them in the pure folk category in the poll and voted for that category) :-)

-ERatha mala mElE elantha pazhuththirukku (what a kuRumbu by Vairamuththar)
-Eh kuruvi chittukkuruvi
-poongARRu thirumbumA? (why am I reminded of that joker in mozhi each time I hear this song )
-vetti vEru vAsam vedalappuLLa nEsam

fantastic, phenomenal songs!

After such a tremendous album, one would have thought that BR will use MV wholesale in the next movie (that he did with Sathyaraj; and it would have been a nice match for that hero).

Possibly IR thought otherwise and Jayachandran got the prize song of 'kodiyilE'.

IR himself sang two (dAs dAs & adi AththAdee happy version) and SPB took 'pOguthE pOguthE'.

So, MV had to be content with just one number - that too just the pathos version of 'adi AththAdee' (i.e. nee pOgum pAthai engE pon mAnE and not iLa manasonnu Rekka kattippaRakkudhu)...

MV's CSJ indulgences were quite deliberate (right from stage mimicry days) and done only rarely -possibly for curiosity / nostalgia value.

Since CSJ-isms were quite peculiar / distinct / unique while easily imitable, most mimicry artists (on stage) sing the current popular song in that "style". Not just on stage, even at private settings - my uncles, cousins - everyone did that at some point of time.

Why, when in kushi mood and nobody around (say driving alone) even I do that along with the song that's being played :-) This morning's sufferers with CSJ-ism were 'EdhO mOham EdhO dhAham' & 'EdhEdhO eNNam vaLarththEn'

BR's first movie without IR was 'vEdham puthithu' and Devendran was the MD, who did a very nice job (though sounding quite similar to IR...many websites even wrongly credit those songs to IR).

MV had a nice pathOs number 'mAttu vaNdi sAlaiyilE'.
(The more popular songs from that movie were 'kaNNukkuL nooru nilavA' by SPB-KSC, 'puththam puthu Olai varum' by KSC)...

(p.s. I've seen VP and found it a ok movie)

BR's next movie was with Rajinikanth-Amala, kodi paRakkuthu and the MD was Hamsaleka.

It had the SPB-KSC hit 'sElai kattum peNNukkoru'. There's one MV song with KSC that starts like 'thoNdaikkuLLE' which I've probably heard a few times on buses. The album's popularity level - despite being a Rajini movie and a star director - wasn't that high.

After those two movies, BR came back to Ilayaraja - even naming the movie's title as 'en uyir thOzhan'. ellAm sari but the resultant album was just an average one by rAsA standards. (Possibly the spark / extra effort for BR was no longer there).

There were two MV numbers and both are good.

I have seen the video of 'kuyilukkuppam, kuyilukkuppam gOpuram Anadhenna' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0791'&lang=en) which was quite impressive. Haven't seen the movie. This song was not as much popular as its recycle in Mano's voice - thooLiyilE Ada vantha vAnaththu min viLakkE (chinna thambi)

The other song 'Eh rAsAththi' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0794'&lang=en) is much better with vocal harmony etc but was only moderately popular I think...

The next BR movie - puthu nellu puthu nAththu - too had IR and was a better album (both the songs and the relative reception in the patti-thotti of TN where 'karuththa machchAn' was heard everywhere) but alas, no song for MV :-(

The BR-IR combo finally came back to full form in nAdOdi thenRal :-) With awesome songs!

MV had Ela mala kAttukkuLLE (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2177'&lang=en), not a catchy number and so not as popular as others such as maNiyE maNikkuyilE / sandhana mArbilE, but a difficult number and one should listen to the excellent singing!

BR did another with Hamsaleka - captain magaL (no Vijayakanth biz, Kushbu supposedly had 'enthappeNNilum illAtha onRu') - but no MV song in this :-(

BTW, I don't think I watched any BR movie that came after vEdham puthithu (oh, except nAdOdi thenRal, the lagAn-predecessor) and am not thorough with the songs and such details of those.

Most of the info on those are sourced from web.

The songs that MV did for BR in the later years seems to be few here and there, unlike being a major contributor during the initial years of BR. May be more options available. May be MV got older (or quite busy in pursuits other than singing).

In any case, here're the numbers by MV for BR under ARR's baton (both I've not heard before) :

kizhakku cheemaiyilE : then kizhakku cheemaiyilE (with Chitra)
karuththammA : kAdu pottaikkAdu (with Bharathiraja)

K Bhagyaraj, a case of 'guruvai minjina sishyan', had been spectacularly successful for a period in TF. He started his career as assistant to Bharathiraja (also writing script / dialog etc for some movies, giving voice for the village doctor in 16 vayadhinilE, a small pattikkAttan role on screen in KPR - RadhikA'kku vazhi solluvAr - and a hapless bearer role in sigappu rOjAkkaL - gets killed inside rest room by the psychO hero) and became the hero in BR's movie pudhiya vArppukaL.

His first song as a hero, vAn mEghangaLE (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2942'&lang=en), had the voice of none other than our Malaysia Vasudevan :-) Since then both shared a list of hits in a variety of ways, especially with KBR as director.

KBR's next big hit after pudhiya vArppukaL was as a villain in 'kannipparuvaththilE'. This was a S A RajkaNNu production (who has a special place in TF history as the producer of 16 vayathinilE and also as producer of mahAnadhi - both landmark movies, it seems Kamal calls him 'mudhalALi'). KBR also did screenplay-dialog for this movie which was a big hit and the songs by Shankar-Ganesh played in every patti-thotti of TN, at times even eclipsing the contemporary IR hits.

Haven't seen the movie and so don't know who is on screen for each song (KBR or Rajesh). In any case, the big hit songs for MV were :

nadaya mAththu (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGSHK0058'&lang=en) (MV / SJ dappAnguththu with typical S-G percussions) - listen to this and one can't help but appreciate the stylish delivery of MV

pattu vaNNa rOsAvAm (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGSHK0060'&lang=en) (inspired by uchchi vaguntheduththu IMSO) - not a big fan of this number but I must acknowledge the phenomenal popularity of this number and an addition of variety to MV's kitty...

(BTW, my fav's from this album were SJ solos - adi ammAdi, one of S-G's best ever & AvAram poomEni -nalla thuLLal number)

KBR's popularity graph was on the rise and he did his first directorial venture 'Bhama Rukmani'. (He married the co-actress in this movie, Praveena, who died within a few years and after that KBR married Poornima Jayaram). MSV was the MD and I don't think there was any MV song. ('nee oru kOdi malar koodi uruvAnavaL' by SPB-VJ had decent air time but was not a patti-thotti hit, same with the movie - it wasn't a big hit).

The next one 'suvar illAtha siththirangaL' had MV singing that sweet & energetic number 'kAdhal vaibOgamE' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGGMN0033'&lang=en)with Janaki. Music by Gangai Amaran who perhaps had his first biggest hit song! KBR-GA combo hit the jackpot with 'mouna geethangaL' - one of the biggest non-IR hits of those times. The movie itself was a smashing success (with part of the scenes appearing in Kumudam as thodarkadhai with actual movie stills and ending as 'meethi veLLiththiraiyil', thus getting the interesting story lot of popularity). The songs were allover TN - much like a typical rAsA hit (radio / teakkadai / bus / loudspeakers / recording centers / functions / thiruvizhas etc).

'dAddee dAddee O my dAddee unnaikkaNdAlE AnandhamE' in the child voice of SJ was in everyone's muNu muNuppu those days. MV sang like a responsible, at-fault-dad ('adhu pOla ammAvum nammOda kaikOrththu anbOdu viLaiyAda manam EnguthE'). The song has some nice kuRumbu ("appAkkaL sila pEru seikinRa thappaiththAn..." & "adhu enna thappu?" and the subsequent lines between the son & dad).

I have not seen the movie but read the kumudam story and with those stills, it came alive to me. I think it was a 'A' padam with Saritha the wronged-wife.

'mAdhamO mArgazhi mAdham' was another MV-SJ duet hit from this movie. The KJY-SJ number 'mookkuththippoo mElE kAththu' was extremely popular as well! (I think there was a pathos version of that too)

With MG, KBR became the numero uno director in the BO context...

I believe they show IR in the titles as a cartoon character, writing notes...GA - another cartoon char - steals some of them (or poRukkify some discards) and runs away to become composer :-)

Interestingly, despite the huge success of mouna geethangaL music, I don't think KBR & GA worked together again  Their prior combo of suvar illAtha siththirangaL was decent as well.

A real mystery! Or, perhaps that was KBR style - keep switching MDs to prove that he is the real stuff and others are just technicians...or, perhaps he was thrilled to be accepted by IR and kazhaRRified GA...

In any case, KBR-IR combo continued to give some nice songs to our thread nAyakan, MV in their hit combos :-)

IR, who did hero-KBR's first song with MV singing 'vAn mEghangaLE' (watch the video for some funny lip movements of Rati Agnihotri), finally joined hands with director-KBR in 'inRu pOi nALai vA'. It was only a moderate success musically. Possibly a BO hit but not to the proportion of mouna geethangaL.

MV had 3 out of 4 songs in that album (TL Maharajan, brother of Deepan Chakravarthy and s/o Trichy Loganathan of 'AsaiyE alai pOle' / 'adikkiRa kai thAn aNaikkum' did the indhi song - mEri pyAri)

MV's songs :

ammAdi chinnappAppA, reNdu kaNNAla ennappAththA (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1138'&lang=en) (typical IR brand funny dappAnguththu, cakewalk for MV)

pala nAL Asai thirunAL Achchu (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1141'&lang=en) (duet with PS, MV does with ease, enjoyed some radio time)

madhana mOga roopa sundari (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1140'&lang=en) (the best song in the album, MV with SP Shailaja, IR making some MKT-style song / repeats interludes, thiraippAdal has swapped the links of this song and mEri pyAri)

KBR employed Shankar-Ganesh for his next movie darling-darling-darling (1982) where his would-be-wife Poornima acted with him and it was a successful movie. Songs were decent hits (O nenjE nee dhAn by SPB the most popular followed by azhagiya vizhikaLil aRubadhu kalaikaLum by SPB-VJ).

MV had a 'my dear my sweet darling, come hear' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGSHK0030'&lang=en) song, which got played here and there but wasn't as popular as the other two SPB numbers.

KBR came back to MV in his hugely succesful village movie where IR was the composer - thooRal ninnu pOchchu!

Interestingly, KBR also had a couple of KJY numbers which were immensely popular (& classy) as well!

thangachchangili minnum paingiLi (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3686'&lang=en) - MV / SJ delectable number
thAlAtta nAn poRanthEn thAlE thAlElO (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3685'&lang=en) - MV solo, thuLLal number, hero ridiculing the innocence of the heroine (who has no clue about what happens after marriage)

The biggest hit, though, was 'En sOga kathayakkELu thAikkulamE' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3682'&lang=en) The MV number that featured KBR in association with MN Nambiar who did a very interesting role in this movie that intro'd Sulakshana.

KBR did a very succesful movie with MSV just around the same time (most probably before 'thooRal ninnu pOchchu', someone please post if this is correct - as always my memory is poor when it comes to non-IR albums), wOh sAt din's original. Possibly the only Ambika movie I liked other than nAn pAdum pAdal. (Ofcourse she was horrible in the last scene).

Interestingly, he chose PJ as the mainstay singer and the songs were a roaring success (kavidhai arangERum nEram, thenRaladhu unnidaththil, thanam thaththanam).

Not forgetting MV, KBR-MSV combo gave him a song with VJ - 'eNNi irundhadhu eedERa' and this was a big hit as well.

 Good question :-)

Most of them aren't available in ANY media in my world (other than internet which is never accessed from car). One or two 'not so bad' ones sneake thru (adukku malligai, siva rAththiree and recently thEdi vandha dEvadhaiyE) but they are played only when there's no child in the car - not so much on loop however.

(It's different story altogther in my wife's lorry where at least the 5 yr old's presence is a given and the 30gb HDD there has a large selection of wholesome songs. In addition, most of the time even they don't get played as the Tom & Jerry / Madagaskar kind of DVDs rule)

We've done some recall of MV+BR & MV+KBR combo and some hits that happened during the ascension of all these three into popularity in the TF scenario.

Since Param has steered the thread toward the two biggies whose TF carrier graph's ascension somewhat coincided with the rise of MV as a star singer, it would be worthwhile to do a similar recall for their popular numbers with MV.

Let start with Kamal who got phenomenal acclaim with 16V where MV had his big initial success.

We've already talked about the two famous number in a few posts, let's get those youtubes and relish.

First, sevvanthippoo mudichcha chellakkA :

The next biggies of KH that featured MV were sattam en kaiyil (TN Balu) and iLamai oonjalAdukiRadhu (Sridhar), both had Ilayaraja music.

thaNNee karuththiruchchu kaNNu thavaLa saththam kEtturuchchu (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1096'&lang=en) of IO was a patti-thotti hit in TN, establishing MV as the most preferred singer for any such themmAngu songs for decades thereafter. The beatsly, folksy number was such a craze among schoolboys who can sing tapping the rhythm on any kind of surface available to them

kadaiththEngAyO vazhippiLLaiyAro (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3249'&lang=en) in SEK was quite a popular number as well, on buses and tea stalls. Helped getting MV's voice etched in the minds of a generation.

That movie also had this supposedly unpicturized duet Azhakkadalil thEdiya muththu (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3248'&lang=en) with SJ that was quite popular on radio and otherwise. Perhaps the first "soft" number for MV-KH combo...

There is this mimicry comical song mErA nAmu abdullA, Avo piyA rasagullA (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3250'&lang=en) in SEK that had some attention as it had a number of movie names getting dished out (AttukkAra alamElu, hum kisisE kammu nahi kammu nahi), possibly the forerunner of 'nEththu rAththiri ammA' ...

I don't think chiththeeee is there in VV kAthiru, it's another "chinna veedu" kind of actress.

'AhA vandhuruchchu' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1456'&lang=en) where MV did some voice-change to suit the 'kEnaiyan version' was a patti-thotti hit.

The next song that MV did for KH movie was 'engengum kaNdEnammA' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3762'&lang=en) of ullAsappaRavaikaL. It was not for Kamal but for comedians, singing with SPB. It's still not resolved as to who sang for VAM and who for SuruLi. (IMO, SPB sings in Suruli tone and MV doesn't do too much of mimicry here, however groucho said that SPB originally sang for thEngAi who got replaced by VAM and so his voice must be for VAM).

So, this is still open for discussion (IMO, the 'ramba pappa pappA' of 2nd interlude by the joLLu pArty is by MV) :-)

The next biggie movie for MV with KH was kadal meenkaL where he gave voice for the younger Kamal in that controversial 'madhini madhini' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1397'&lang=en) song. When censor objected, they changed it to 'mayile mayile' MV's voice suited Kamal to a T. Song easily brings coastal side to one's mind though not as sharply as 'thAlAttudhE vAnam'.

MV also had a song for Suman, 'enRenRum AnandhamE' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1393'&lang=en), the guitar / synth / violin delight and is among the poll songs on top of this thread.

I was pretty upset those days that it wasn't given to SPB but don't have such complaints anymore (after seeing tons of great compositions wasted on much lower grade singers...MV wasn't that sophi but did a very credible job).

Voted for soft/smooth. Allithantha boomi is supposed to be a jolly song on the surface. Keero takes his wife/son on a tour and shows the places he grew up. But the keero is a dying asthma patient. The subtle melancholy in that jolly good song was beautifully captured by IR and MV has done 110% justice. The song gives you an eerie/uneasy feeling while listening to it. But you can't stop listening to it.

MV didn't feature in the initial-days-KH-movies where MSV composed. (Possibly MV was busy singing for IR / Shankar Ganesh). It was more of SPB show (e.g. ninaiththAlE inikkum which was a total SPB show. Even the Rajinikanth song -sambO siva sambO - was sung by MSV himself and not MV).

It doesn't mean MSV neglected MV - he gave him a number of songs when composing for Rajini - suppaNNa sonnAraNNA of thee, for e.g. (quoting 'AduvOmE paLLuppAduvOmE' of "subbaNNA").

So, MV-KH-MSV combo, from early days, is quite rare.

Back to MV-KH combo, the next one was in ellAm inba mayam, again music by IR (Panju Arunachalam / GN Rangarajan)...it had two songs.

One is the comical kuppamification of a carnatic song mAman voodu machchu voodu parusam pOttadhu kuchchu voodu (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0713'&lang=en) and the other is another comical number AsaikkiLiyE burlA burlA (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0712'&lang=en)

Both songs enjoyed some radio / teakkadai / bus / loudspeaker time...

Around this time period came 'sankarlAl' - a movie Kamal supposedly completed directing some portions after its director T N Balu died. The only movie with the title card for MD showing Ilayaraja - Gangai Amaran (each did part of the movie).

MV had two songs in it. Gangai Amaran MD-ed kasthoori mAn onRu (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3227'&lang=en) with Janaki & another solo thEdinEn (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3229'&lang=en) that sounds more like a GA composition as well. (I'm sure IR got credited for the SPB/SJ number 'iLangiLiyE' and GA for 'kasthoori mAn' but not sure about others).

kasthoori mAn was a radio / bus hit (as was iLangiLiyE)...

Though MV was featured in Balu Mahendra's 'moodupani' (paruva kAlangaLin kanavu with SJ for IR's 100th movie), he was left out in the BM-KH movie 'moonRam piRai'.

However, the next two numbers that MV did for Kamal were among the biggest-ever hits for MV (though not the best).

They were in SKV, a big commercial success for KH. Those songs were patti-thotti hits despite the strong 'maRRa' content in both of them. Very explicit in one, embedded as double meanings in the other :-(

Anyways, these are the songs :

'katta vaNdi katta vaNdi kAppAththa vandhavandi' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3178'&lang=en)(the guitar special)
&
'nilA kAyuthu nEram nalla nEram' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR3180'&lang=en) (ties for the all-time-top-spot with 'ponmEni urukuthE' for such munakal songs in TFM, awesome orchestration BTW)

After MV started his acting career, there had been further decline in the # of songs he sang for Kamal it appears :-(

After the dismal 1984, look at 1985 :

--kAthiruppadhu pAthiruppathu (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0279'&lang=en)- practically unknown number, with SPB, from andha oru nimidam - that had every other song by SPB including the great 'siRiya paRavai siRakai virikkaththudikkiRadhE'

--NONE in Jappanil Kalyanaraman - original Kalyanaraman was 100% MV and now all SPB

--NONE in kAkkichchattai - 100% SPB

--NONE in uyarndha uLLam, like TTT of AVM...movies that followed SKV of AVM where the MV numbers reverberated everywhere in TN

There seems to be a Kamal movie called 'mangammA sabatham' as per wikipedia, don't know what songs were there, who the MD was and whether there was MV in it. (This movie title seems to be another case of reuse of an old title for a Kamal movie)

There is one 'jAthi illai' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1347'&lang=en)dappAnguththu in kAdhal parisu.

And another hindi-song-like-number veLakkEththu veLakkEththu veLLikkizhamai (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2688'&lang=en) from pEr sollum piLLai.

He sings well such songs but why only such numbers? Why not other kinds, like duets? irritating...

Thanks, This song has similarities with "singam ondru purapaduthE" of Arunatchalam, both songs were by MV. I think given Deva's habbit, this could have been an inspirational song for singamondru purapaduthe :lol2:

singam ondru purappatathe = Traditional Villupaattu opener -
thandhanathom endru solliyE, villinil pada - AmAm - villinil pAda, vandharuLvAi kalai magaLE...
Straight lift - I dont think Deva booked a room to think and convert "oh oru thendral" into Singam ondru purappatadhE. nOgAma nombu kumbidaNum - avaru characteriayyE purinjikka mAtRInga"?

1988 - 3 movies by Kamal (sathya, soorasamhAram, unnAl mudiyum thambi) - zero songs for MV in these.
1989:
apoorva sahOdharakaL - NONE for MV
veRRi vizhA - Finally, MV is back for a couple of songs in a Kamal movie - but both songs are for Prabhu and not Kamal...

seevi sinukkeduththu (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR4046'&lang=en) (simply superb song, with all kinds of wind instruments, including the sweet shenoy)
vAnam enna keezhirukku (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR4048'&lang=en) (quite interesting, stylish number)

1990 - MMKR

MV did one of my most fav songs on screen :-)

'pEru vachchAlum vaikkAmappOnAlum malli vAsam' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2052'&lang=en) , with Kamal on screen for a MV song after a long time!

90's saw further dwindling of Kamal-MV combo...

1991 - gunA - None
1992 - dEvar magan - puthiyathu piRandhadhu (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0599'&lang=en)a run-of-the-mill kind of number, IMO...the specials went to others...
singAravElan - None
1993 - kalaignan - None
mahAnadhi - None
maharAsan - didn't even know this was a GNR movie from 80's...must be rAsA...can't remember any song...but thiraippadal has a few listed, with MV:
'avanA-ivanA-theriyAthu' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1864'&lang=en)(kEttadhe illai)
'rAsA maharAsA enga maharAsA' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1867'&lang=en) (ditto, kEttadhE illai)

1994 - mahalir mattum - None
nammavar - don't know, sottu neelam Mahesh music, is there any MV number?

1996 - Indian / avvai shaNmuki - None

I think there was hardly any in the late 90's or during 2000's...if there's any number, please post here. If not, we'll move on to Rajinikanth numbers, as chronologically as possible, sung by MV.

Rajini - MV too had been a terrific combo as their voices matched pretty good like Kamal - MV.

It's sad to see MV ending his innings scoring a duck with Kamal in maharAsan :-(

They both had such superb songs together in the "growing-up" phase of their careers...

In a way, it also reminds the important role rAsA played in MV's career. The "for-all-practical-purposes-exit" of MV happened when IR got removed from the commercial top spot...

Jumping into the Rajini-MV alliance...

The early movies of Rajini calls for too much of research as to whether he had even songs / if so who gave pinnaNi etc. That is in the 75/76/77 years where Rajini did all kinds of roles, often with negative shades which were not granted songs on screen. Moreover, MV himself shot into prominence only after 16V of 77.

So, I'm not going to look at movies of 77 or prior. If any HCRKF has info on RK-MV songs during that period, please post in this thread.

varalARu romba mukkiyam.

From Rajini flimography in wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajinikanth_filmography), it looks like RK did 20 movies in 1978 in all lang, including guest appearances

We've already covered 16V, IO in this thread - when discussing BR & KH.

RK heroed movies, like, Bhairavi / muLLum malarum / Priya / chathurangam / thappuththALangaL / thAi meethu saththiyam / vaNakkaththukkuriya kAthaliyE....mhoom...no MV in any of these.

There seems to be a ton of multi hero movies - mAngudi minor / Ayiram jenmangaL kinds and there's no smell of MV in such movies either.

Looks like, go to 1979...

annai oru Alayam - SPB / TMS - no MV there
6 to 70 - no MV

wow, dharma yudhdham!

Possibly the first couple of songs that MV sung for Rajinikanth!

I was thinking all along that MV was the sole male voice in this movie, with those evergreen oru thanga rathaththil (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0655'&lang=en)& AgAya gangai (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0653'&lang=en), both songs found their mention in our polls. 'ada pOyyA pOyyA' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0652'&lang=en)was a SPS solo.

thiraippAdal tells me that there was another duet - called "disco song" (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR0654'&lang=en)- which is dangerous to play in the workplace because of mukkal-munakals

Not MV, must be one of those one-off singers who were called upon for englees songs those days!

thanga ratham & AgAya gangai were possibly among the most-times-played-songs in the IOKS!

Some Interesting Facts on MALAYSIA VASUDEVAN

Born in 1944 at end of 2nd world war in the coastal town of Port Dickson in Malaysia to rubber-tapper parents

Youngest after MS Gopalan (renown singer in Malaysia). Whole family is musically-inclined

At five year olds, he was imitating voices of P Susheela and Jikki

Later the whole family joined a drama troupe in Taiping, Perak and started singing and acting

Early 60s there was an advertisement asking for talents for a Malaysian production Raththa Pei to be produced in India. MV applied and was selected

22 year old MV acted as 50 year old dad

MD was GK Venketesh

Since MV was more interested in singing, a voice test was done by GKV witnessed by SJanaki and PBS

- more later

Back to Rajini-MV combo listinggu...

1980 should have been a muththirai year for this combo. 'pothuvAga emmanasu thangam' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR2114'&lang=en)from the AVM film murattukkALai where 'thennakaththu james bondu' became a villain, was possibly the first Rajinikanth song in MGR-ish style. No question about the song becoming a patti-thotti hit in TN, it reverberated in every nook and corner through every possible medium.

I love the urumi, chorus, percussion arrangements, powerful overall orchestration & MV's enthu!

Quite a motivational number, if one cares to look at the lyrics!

1980 also witnessed MV teaming up with MSV in a big way for the veththalayappOttEndi saththi konjam ERudhadi (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGOLD1671'&lang=en), huge hit song in the billA movie. (So much popular that Yuvan had to make a remix of this song for the remake of the movie with Ajith recently).

There is another song from this movie, iravum pagalum (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGOLD1667'&lang=en), a MV-VJ duet, that was not all that popular...to me it sounds like I've hardly heard it those days. Obviously, the SPB number was a lot more popular from this movie.

Then there was this 'kALi', I V Sasi movie from the same year that had the sweet adi Adu poonguyilE (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1301'&lang=en) by MV, that further established him as one of the regular singers for Rajini :-)
