It clearly looks like the NJ Concert gave a better listening experience, be it audio quality or audience response, than the Toronto concert. Any popular tamizh tholaikaatchis telecasting these shows?

Sundar, do you really want to map raagas to songs like "sangeedh thirunaaLo or "ennOdu vaa vaa" types? They are very light[ no complaints about that] and do not exhibit any proper raagaa flavour.

A +ve review, but user comments are -ve as a result of expecting more Telugu songs. Such concerts should be projected mainly as IR's Tamil songs concert with some Telugu songs. Surely, a predominantly IR's Telugu songs concert will be well received as well.

Ah...trust the regulars of this forum to faithfully make it like I expected(kiru, baroque etc...) :-D I decided to skip it to spend more time with my toddlers.(Did watch McEnroe/Agassi at HP Pavilion 3 months ago).

So what was that about Raja being upset about the crowd? I expected the crowd to be more dignified, but then a lot of attendees were likely to treat the event like an entertainer, than being mature fans of IR.

I really wish that they don't allow food inside the theater! nauseating!:(

what an incredible experience - too bad I couldnt meet up with IR backstage!

HP Pavilion had a thiruvizhaa effect !

hubbers, next time I visit bay area, would love to meet up with some of us.

highlights for me:

1. IR entering the stage like a military commander and starting the concert right on time!

2. the IR-SPB camaraderie - SPB explaining the harmonic score of 'oh priya priya' on strings, goosebumps all the way - idhathaan naan edhirpaarthaen.

3. I had explained to my friends outside the hall abt how Mano has often butchered SPBs telugu songs in tamil - 'o papa lali' by SPB became, 'o BAABAA lali' (like baba black sheep have you any wool) by Mano in tamil - and when mano came onstage, i was getting all nervous, but he stuck to his 'shenbagamey' - what a relief - aanaa IR found a mistake even in that rendition "sammadhamey became sammAAAAdhamey" - Mano nallaa ottappattaar - after that, Mano was relegated to doing compering and edupidi velai!

4. Chithra - yenna oru simplicity and no hassle presence onstage - hats off - 'ninnukori varnam' on stage was pattai kilappufying - the orchestration was topnotch

5. IR - as usual - some aanmeega / thathhuva sidharalgal - in-between the show!

6. I was speaking abt IR's telugu scores eloquently before the show referencing Abinandana in particular - and when SPB sang 'adhe neevu' i was overjoyed, but let down a bit when the song was rendered without those glorious interludes!

7.'balapam patti', 'priyaa priyathamaa' and the immortal 'priyathamaa, nanu' from JVAS - all of which were marana mass hits when they came out - were justifiably performed, especially the last song which had some very intricate strings section in the second interlude - IR gave them accolades just for that song!

One of the major highlights of the show was "pottu vaitha kadhal thittam" by Karthik and Yuvan. Karthik's performance was very energetic, the whole stadium was rocking. Even IR was smiling when Karthik asked orchestra to stop and audience to start clapping to the rhythm. Similar response to Chitra's Ninnu Kore Varnam. I heard from the organizers that IR had some nice things to say about Bay Area's audience. Will write about that soon.

They started playing the intro BGM without telling IR. maestro was eating his sandwich and suddenly called to be on stage. He didnt have time to drink water as well. Until the last step, he was eating/cleaning left over in his mouth. I was bit concerned and thought he might choke, but managed very well.

Before that IR and SPB were comparing 2 sandwiches! SPB wasn't hungry, but IR forced him to eat (urimayudan "saapiduda apparam pasikkum").

After the show on our way back to car, IR said "janaki is the only artist who could render the song as is and Chitra is the next best" and someone in the car mentioned that "Janaki scolded you in a recent TV interview" and IR said "sollittu poraanga, yaar Yaaro edho solraanga, avanga sonna thappillai". He has lot of respect and admiration for Janaki.

I wouldnt miss it for gods sake. I was there in all 3 events, but had the opportunity to be with him in NJ and continuded that in CA. You may have noticed me as well... Guy with navy blue jeans, white shirt, a Nikon D5200 camera and a small (maestro's) camcorder moving around the auditorium and disturbing people :)

8. IR gave an interesting anecdote abt the origin of the 'maasi maasam aalaana ponnu' tune for Dharma durai - am paraphrashing him here:

"namma superstar illa ? avaru paattu composingku vandhu, 'thanni karuthhurichhu' tune madhiri venum indha situationukku - apdeenu kettaar - naan sonnen - adhu yerkanavey potta tune - indhaanga vera tune, indha situationukku correcta irukkum - adhu thaan 'maasi maasam aalaana ponnu' tune pirandha kadhai".

9. SPB asked IR if he has written any song in Telugu - IR said he has done it once - a spiritual verse after he was inspired by a thyagaraja keerthanai.

10. hariharan did ample justice to 'manjolai kili thano', 'isaiyil thodangudhamma' songs - brilliantly rendered!

11. IR sathham podra makkalskku oru dose vuttaru - adhukku munnadi thaan Karthik, sathhamey illaiyey apdeenu usuppethhi vituttu ponaar! IR oda thittu karthik pakkam thaan poyirukkanum!

Some interesting info shared by the organizers of Ilayaraja's concert in San Jose (Bay Area Telugu Association):

- Raja is super happy with the response to the concert. During the lunch on Saturday, he was recollecting how the entire crowd of 10,000 people did not get up from their seats even after he concluded the concert. It was 12:15AM but they were not tired and were asking for more songs. Raja & SPB had to announce that the concert is over, multiple times. Only then people started getting up.

- Raja extended his compliments the audience in bay area, calling them musically inclined and well disciplined. He was recollecting how they were clapping very precisely to the rhythm when Chitra was performing 'Ninnu Kore Varnam'. Chitra has also made similar comments.

- When the organizers asked Raja to come back for another concert, Raja seems to have readily agreed. More details awaited.

12. when SPB sang 'ilamai ennum poongatru', we was floored ! cudnt have been a greater tribute to both the late Kannadasan, as well as IR and SPB himself - oldtime hubbers would remember the times when this song was analyzed piece-by-piece for its chords progression - hats off to the orchestra to demonstrate the entire thing to perfection onstage!

13.the recreation of the acapella 'naan porandhu vandhadhu' from mayabazaar, must have taken hours and hours of practice to make it perfect - as IR himself said after that song - during a recording, it can be redone until it becomes perfect, but not so, doing it onstage - kodi kodi nandri for the singers who did this onstage!

It has been 2 weeks since the NJ concert. But still it remains afresh and i think it will stay afresh in our memory.

Here are some interesting info shared by IR & SPB.

1.on Ninnu kori varnam - IR mentioned that director did not request this song. This song was composed on 1-4-87 (Raja Sir showing the original notes). Manirathinam wanted this to be a chorous song. But Raja Sir felt that there is no space for creativity. So he decided to compose Mohanam raga based song in western style. Since saint Thiyagaraja's keerthana "Ninnu kori varanam" is also in Mohanam, Valli used that lyric as base and then wrote the remaining song.

2. #Lalitha priya kamalam - IR said director (KB) did not choose the character name of the heroine for that movie even after 2 months. During Composition, KB mentioned that he will choose the name of the heroine based on the raga of the song that IR had chosen to compose. The song was set in Lalitha ragam (Raja sung Dikshitar krithi, Hiranmayee lalitha) and KB had chosen that name.

3. SPB said that till date he (IR) will first start writing the notes of the song and then only he will start using his "harmonium". He will first write the lead singers name that he had in mind in his note first and then only start write down the notes.

4. IR shared another interesting info.. Till date, he had not taken more than 4 minutes to complete the notes of a song starting from Annakilli to NEPV and that's 920 films.

5. SPB said that black eyed peas in their elephunk theme album used IR's song "unakkum ennakkum anandam". But that was done without IR's knowledge and later blackeyedpeas apologized and did recognize IR.

6. on the same note, SPB said that many hindi composers blatantly ripped IR's composition and used in hindi movies without even offering a recognition. SPB recalled that one famous composer asked him to sing "rakkama kayaathattu" tune in hindi version without even knowing that it was sung by SPB in tamil and also claimed that its their original tune.
7. SPB recalled that IR never used any pre recorded composition in his composition including the starting mantras used in kadhal oviyam or any other songs. IR said that kadal oviyam song has several ragas in it.. (interesting info)
8. nila athu vanathu mela / Then pandi chemaiyle -- mani wanted a lullaby first. After hearing lullaby, mani wanted a peppy number in the same tune and thus born nila athu vannathu mela.. IR sung both of the songs and showed how they are same..

On our way to Prudential for the concert, I was informing organizers where we were and at some point I mentioned that "literally 5 minutes" and Raaja sir said its a grammer mistake and I shouldn't use "literally" when talking! I responded by saying "naan Tamil medium sir" and he just laughed (implies I didn't go to school but has better grammer than you).

Its not practical for entire orchestra to finish concert by mid night and fly to Sydney and do another show. Humanly not possible for anyone. They all need and deserve some rest.

It was a great privilege to attend Maestro's concert in the largest arena in Europe. It was indeed a musical rain (with literally rain showers outside!!!) and forty songs rendered by an incredible array of singers and live orchestra. The Maestro and their sponsors should be greatly applauded in pulling out a spectacular show in London. As I sat through the concert, one song after another without any break (6:00 PM to 11:00 PM), few thoughts came to my mind. I have seen several recorded concerts of Maestro (Rome, Dubai, Chennai-2011, 2005, Toronto, San Jose, Madurai) and the London event was on par with the Chennai 2011 and Toronto concerts. I would like Maestro's concert team to take care of these omissions and make efforts to improve/ fix these issues for the next concert.

1. The concert team should have given some time to introduce the orchestra (at least key players and instrumentalists) many of whom have worked with Maestro since 1977. As Maestro pointed out, there was no need to have a Master of ceremony because he considered that it was a waste of time. At least they can highlight the names in the projection screen.
2. Same goes for playback singers. None of the singers were properly introduced and acknowledged. The singers are very much part of Maestro's musical journey and they deserve our praise and attention. If time is of crunch, they could have used the projection screens to show old images of singers with Maestro and their achievements.
3. Maestro is as usual focused on churning out the best output from the orchestra and the singers. Most of the talking and stories were done by SPB and Kamal. SPB talked about facts like 14 movies were given background scores and song composition was done on time for a Diwali season - this was a mind boggling fact. It's all the more fascinating that all the 14 films had five super hit songs each (70 super hit songs for a single Diwali season). No world composer could churn out hits like this and the audience would greatly appreciate if these statistics were displayed on the screen. Jayachandran spoke about how his three hits songs of Vaidegi K were recorded one after other on the same day. Maestro should be induced to loosen up a bit.
4. London being a city of operas and concerts, Maestro could have played pieces of his Thiruvasagam symphony and/or snippets from Nothing But Wind. These are timeless classics and the audience would have tasted Maestro's vast array of musical composition.
5. As soon as Maestro signed off the concert at 11:00 PM, everyone started walking out without waiting for the sponsor's felicitation and artists recognition. This part could have been moved in between the songs.
6. My biggest grouse has been the sound engineering in O2 Arena. In the past the O2 Arena had spent incredible amount of money to reduce the echo problems, but the inherent shape of the dome tends to create echo if the placement of main speakers is not designed correctly. I could be wrong here, but it appears that Maestro should have an in-house sound engineer or architect to correct echo problems during concerts. Many leading music troupes have similar sound engineering team who would visit the venue much ahead of time and plan the placement of bass speakers and measure echo levels from different seating zones. Several songs had echo problems besides rendering the playback voice level too low. The music score would drown the voice levels.
7. The giant projection screens (two on the periphery and two inside) weren't in sync. The different cameras could have captured the intricate music instruments being played besides showing the playback singer and the stage. Since the arena is huge, the people sitting in the balcony and side, could not view the stage properly. The projection screens is the only means to view what's going on in the stage.

Organizing a major international concert is a big endeavor and Maestro should continue touring the world in the coming months. Let's hear more variety of songs and musical arrangements from his vast collection of 975 albums. I wish SPB and Sailaja had rendered the hit song from Poonthalir - what an amazing rendition of guitar in 1980. The musical score sounds like 2025!!!!. Maestro is way ahead of the time and many Tamil movie directors haven't yet realized this fact. Watching him perform the music show is a rare blessing. It looks like Maestro and Kamal (all his songs from nearly 50 movies which were scored by Maestro) would plan for a major international concert very soon.

Superaa irundhudhu ! It was a 4 and half hours show and some very different songs other than his usual collection- shailaja sang oru kili urugudhu , raasave unna nan so well! Some great songs from jayachandran -Kodiyile , raasathi unna but highlight was SPB as always- God he is!

Kamal sang unna vida, kaasu mela with karthikraja,thenpandi seemayile and inji idupazhaga

So many singers were there from past vijay tv shows too!

Hi peeps

I can see that there has been some people from this forum who attented Raaja sirs concert in London as I did.
I have some small clips which i took on my mobile during the show. The beginning of each songs which i recorded until my mobile was out of space.
But I will try to upload them for you, bcos for me it was my first musical concert in my life and that too with my musical God...
The time between 6.30 pm to 11 pm was a trip to heaven which I never will forget as long as I live...!!!
And for me the best song was Rajaa rajaathi raajan intha rajaa from Agni Natchathiram...what a electrifying atmosphere and the way Raaja sir showed his confidence was out of this world...what a day...!!

Can someone post the complete list of songs performed in the concert. I'm seeing lot of negative comments abt the concert in facebook. Any TFMers went to the concert can shed some light abt the performance?

Yes, people disappointed with the concert.

The concert ticket was not cheap. People have spent their hard earned money. The organizer could have postponed it to some other day.
Suhashini was the emcee and fail to connect with audience.
Yuvan was crap. He sang a few songs like thendral vanthu theendum pothu, amma endra alaikathai uyirile, nila athu vaanatha melai.,,what a disgrace !
At one point, he admit that he did not have enough rehearsal. What a shame !
Karthik Raja ....basically he did nothing
Song selection was not good, mostly slow songs. Not many fast beat songs except one or two. No variety in the song selection. Not able to engage the audience towards the end.
Singers selection could have been better.
There was a tribute segment to yesteryear personalities..which lasted for more than 30 mins..very draggy..they keep talking...at one point this segment was like never ending and audience started to make noise.
The show was lengthy, supposed to be 4 hrs. but total duration was close to 5hrs.. and it started late by 20mins.



On positive side -
Orchestra was fantastic
SPB - awesome.. he saves the day, else could have been total disaster
Haricharan and Mano did great job as well.

If we exclude Raja, this is true for many Raja concerts. In NJ show, its SPB, Mano and Chitra along with Raja ruled the show.

Yuvan and Karthilk should going forward avoid appearing on stage. Pottu vaitha, Ninaivo oru paravai kind of songs need to be sung by Haricharan or Karthik. They have much better throw on their voice.

King of Kings: Hope you guys saw the concert in Jaya TV. The selective songs PLUS Raja sir's discussions MINUS the crap on the concert satisfied me completely. I really enjoyed what Jaya TV gave me, I wrote my views in 'IR News and Titbits'. Also I am happy with the song selections, disciplined audience, orchestra and the sounds.. I hate Suhashini, I am glad she was not shown on the Jaya TV telecast even by mistake. I attended the London Concert live, I would say King of Kings is much better than Raja Raja thaan.

Selection may not have been especially crowd pleasing - see Raamrams comment above - but there were some real surprises, hidden gems this time. Tholin mele baaram illai and Metti Oli (which was superlike!!!!) really shone, how wonderful it was to listen to live renditions of these underappreciated songs. Both songs imo turned out better than the original recording.

Day 1 - The damage was done by Raja pamily taking charge of the microphone.
Even though malar had prepared me for their vocal onslaught, hearing them live, mercilessly mauling some of Raja's classics like Janani janani, Amma endru , thendral vandhu made me cringe with embarrassment in front of my relatives who were merrily blaming Raja for the fiasco. Day 2 had better songs and better singers like Uma Ramanan, Haricharan, AlAp Raju . SPB had some tough time with "vaan pOle", "en kaNmaNi" , esp the latter due to Mano but was in his elements in beatsy songs like "vanithamani","iLamai idho", "vaa vaa pakkam vaa", Mano's compering in Jaya tv hogged a good amount of time and except for the Raja episodes, the rest was blade O blade . pinna enna? repeatedly asking every Tom the most irritating question , "how did you feel singing Raja songs?". How I wished Jaya tv crew threw more spotlightt on Raja's old war horses like Napoleoan , Prabakar , Sada and many others on the orchestra , rather than close up of only the singers!

Some observations as I was 'tweet-watching' the show (with envy) yesterday

* Lasted almost exactly 4 hours: 7:30pm to 11:30pm
* Much thought has gone into the song choices. After the obligatory songs (#1-3), #4 is vinayagar vandhanam (where one line pleads 'vetriyai thaarumayya'), #5 for thamizh language (note that this concert is in madurai), #6-7 for isai , #8-10 nativity, #11 obligatory (more so because it's his maN), #12 to break the monotony? #13 native touch + add a bit of fun? #14-15 again on isai, #17-20 madurai/vaigai spl #21 on isai, #22-24 throw in variety for the masses, #25 madurai-la paadiye aaganume! #26-28 round off with popular hit songs
* No wow factors like three-note song or 'ithayam poguthe' WCM demonstration, I guess. Must watch the show to confirm this.

Let's wait till Apr 14 when it'll be telecast on Raj TV. Meanwhile, can we hear reviews from ppl who have really watched the show in person..

5. amudhe thamizhe : Can anyone tell who sung this on stage ? I am always glued to the version sung by IR, but never got a chance to hear it fully and correctly. There is only one recording of this song sung by IR during the function honoring MGR for his Bharat Ratna award. Don't really wish to post the video here as IR features in only 30 secs.

Highlights
1) IR was as usual very enthusiastic and he was standing more than 3 & 1/2 Hours in the Stage.
2) Confirmation of his 1000th Film is confirmed in the Stage.(Bala's Tharai Thappattai)
3) Totally 27 Songs were there...
4) Started with Janani Janani by IR. (My Father made me to listen thru' his mobile - Live). I was very happy and felt blessed.
5) My Brother Felt the concert was Good,

1) Should have been Better in Song Selection.

1) Should have been Better in Song Selection. - இதுற்கு என்ன குறைச்சல்.. முப்பதும் தங்கம், வைரம், ரத்தினக் கல்தான்.
2) Started Late (@7.30 PM) and all felt 27 Songs are less...IR also felt the same it seems....Informed that they have prepared 47 Songs...
3) Should have avoided 'NETHU RATHIRI AMMA'... -- ஒ இதுவேறையா? ராஜாவுக்கு எண்ணற்ற ரசிகர்கள். நானெல்லாம் ஜனனி ஜனனியை எந்த அளவுக்கு ரசிக்கிறேனோ, அதே அளவுக்கு நேத்து ராத்திரி யம்மாவையும் ரசிப்பவன். நேத்து ராத்திரியம்மா - பாடலாக்கம் ( சூழல்/உணர்வு, வாத்தியத் தேர்வு, பாடகர்கள் தேர்வு, ராகம் - தாளம்) என எல்லா விஷயங்களையும் கலந்தால்) லட்சத்தில் ஒன்று.

எனக்கும் அல்ப ஆசை தான். 30 பாடல்களே ஆனாலும் முத்தானா பாடல்களாக கொடுத்திருக்கலாம். அதற்காக மதுரையில் வாசித்த பாடல்கள் நல்ல பாடல்கள் இல்லை என்று பொருள் இல்லை. ஒன்று இரண்டை இந்த பாடல்கள் அனைத்தும் ஏற்கனவே ராஜா சாரின் கச்சேரிகளில் கடந்த 9 ஆண்டுகளாக பாடப்பட்டும் பல முறை கேட்டும், தற்போது சற்றே சோர்வடைய வைக்கும் பாடல்கள்.

ஒரு வேளை , அந்த ஊர் கூட்டத்திற்கு இது போதும் என்று நினைத்திருக்கலாம். மதுரையில் கிடைக்கும் வருமானத்திற்கு வேறு பாடல்களை தேர்வு செய்து, ரிகர்சல் செலவு அது இது என்று இழுத்து கொண்டே போக வேண்டாம் என்று கூட நினைத்திருக்கலாம்.

எதுவாயினும்.. ராஜா சார் கலந்து கொண்டால் அது ராஜா சார் நிகழ்ச்சி. அதற்க்கு ஒரு கலர் இருக்க வேண்டும். ரிச்னெஸ் தெரிய வேண்டும். அது மேடை அலங்காரத்திலும், வான வேடிக்கைகளிலும் இருந்தால் மட்டும் போதுமா? இப்போதெல்லாம் துக்கடா கச்சேரியிலும், சூப்பர் சிங்கெர்சிலும் அவருடைய அரிய பாடல்களை பாடுகிறார்கள். ஆனால் அவருடைய நிகழ்ச்சியில் அரைத்த மாவை அரைக்கலாமா?

லண்டனிலும், அவரில்லாத மலேசிய நிகழ்ச்சியிலும் பாடல் தேர்வு சிறப்பாகவே இருந்தது என்பேன். என்னுடைய கருத்து, நாளை நிகழ்ச்சி வீடியோவை பார்க்கும் போது மாறி போகலாம். பாடல்களை வழங்கும் விதத்திலும், நிகழ்ச்சியை சுவாரசியமாய் கொண்டு போகும் பக்குவத்திலும், அது ஒரு வேளை நன்றாக இருந்தால், பாடல் தேர்வை மறந்து விடுவோமோ என்னவோ?

நிகழ்ச்சியின் திருஷ்டி பொட்டாய் சுகாசினியை தொகுத்து வழங்க வைத்திருக்கிறார்கள் போல. சிறந்த நடிகை, ஆனால் காரணமே இல்லாமல், நான் சிறு வயது முதல் வெறுக்கும் பெண்மணி இவர் மட்டும் தான், ஏன் என்று தெரிய வில்லை.

Thanks to RR for posting the song list. Why couldn't the organizers start the concert on time? Ilayaraaja himself is a stickler of punctuality and his concert should be a reflection of his discipline. The London concert started right on time and Maestro delivered 40 songs without much break and running commentary. Even the 2011 Madras concert started on time. Karthik Raja should get these basic things straightened out before organizing the next mega concert. This is not some election meeting.

I am not certain on how the songs are selected for Maestro's concerts. I believe the London and Madras concerts had Raaja's fans picking up the songs via Radio program and social media. Where are the Maestro's gems which were tuned between the year 2000 and 2014? Dhoni is a classic example. Many of Maestro's fans can claim that his style of composing and genre had changed since 2000 but the melody factor is still the main attraction. That's what makes Ilayaraaja the real King of Music. I am hoping that the next concert of Maestro would showcase more songs from year 2000 onwards. Kamal's concert of all his 100 movies with Raaja is eagerly awaited - he hinted that in London.

நாயனம் போன்ற ஒரு வாத்தியத்தின் ஒரு முனையின் ஊதப்படும் காற்று அடுத்த முனை வழியாக வெளிவரும்போது கிளம்பும் ராகத்தில் அந்த ஓலம் அழுகிறது Jaychaa Singaram அண்ணன் வாசிக்கும் உறுமி மேளம் அதற்க்கு ஈடு கொடுக்கும்போது சொல்லொணா துயரம் நெஞ்சை பிளக்கிறது , இசைஞானி இளையராஜா பாட ஆரம்பிக்கிறார் ...

ஆறும் அது ஆழமில்லை அது சேரும் கடலும் ஆழமில்லை
ஆழம் எது ஐயா அந்த பொம்பளை மனசு தான்யா

இந்த படத்தை பார்த்ததில்லை , இந்த பாட்டின் நோக்கத்தை கேட்டதில்லை, இப்பாட்டின் சூழ்நிலை தெரியவில்லை, ஆனாலும் பாடலின் இசையும் இசைஞானியின் குரலும், அந்த வரிகளை "நச்"சென்று கொண்டுபோய் நேரடியாக நம் நெஞ்சாங்கூட்டில் அடைக்கிறது , தன் கூடு தேடி எங்கெங்கோ அலைந்து நம் நெஞ்சாங்கூட்டில் அடைந்த அந்த ஊமைக்குயில் வெளிவர வழிதேடி நெஞ்சமெங்கும் ஜன்னல் தேடி ஓடி ஓடி சுவற்றில் மோதி கீழே விழுகிறது, வெளியேற வழி தெரியாமல் அந்த சோககானம் பாடும் பூஞ்சோலைக்குயிலின் ஓலத்தை இளையராஜாவை தவிர வேறு யாரால் கூட முடியும், இப்பாடலின் இசை அந்த தத்ரூபத்தை அவ்வளவு அழகாக காட்டுகிறது , அந்த வலியை, அந்த சோகத்தை, அந்த காதலின் உண்மையை, நம்மை ஏசி விட்டு போன அந்த பெண் குயிலின் புரியாத மனோபாவத்தை புரியாமல் புலம்பும் ஒரு ஆண்மகனின் குரல் இவ்வளவு நெகிழ்ச்சியாகவா இருக்கும்??!!!...

முதல் சரணம் ஆரம்பிக்கிறது,

வரிகளில் ஏதும் பாசாங்கு இல்லை , பாமரனின் சோகத்தை அப்படியே வெளி கொண்டுவரும் வரிகளை எப்பேர்பட்ட பாடகர் பாடினாலும் இத்தனை எளிமையாகவோ, உணர்வுபூர்வமாகவோ கிராமிய மணம் கிடைக்காது, ஆனால் ராஜாவின் குரலில் இருக்கும் ஒரு வண்ணம் வேறு யாரின் குரலிலும் கிடைக்காத ஒரு அபூர்வம், ராஜாவின் குரலில் கேட்கும்போது அப்பாடலின் தரமும், அதன் முழு நோக்கமும், நிஜ உணர்வும் ஒரு படி மேலாகவே கொண்டு பொய் நம் நெஞ்சில் ராஜா சேர்க்கிறார், ராஜாவின் குரலுக்கு எந்த நடிகர் வாய் அசைத்தாலும் அது அந்த நடிகரே, கதாபாத்திரமே பாடுவது போல ஒரு உணர்வு தோணுவது இதனால்தான், இளையராஜாவின் குரலில் இருக்கும் அதிகப்படியான உணர்வு பிரவாகமே கடைக்கோடி பாமர ரசிகன் அக்குரலை தன் குரலாக நினைத்து, கேட்டு மருகித்துடிக்கிறார்கள்,

இரண்டாம் இடை இசை ஆரம்பிக்கிறது , மீண்டும் கோரஸ் தேவதைகளின் குரல், பெண்களை வைத்து, கோபமாக ஒரு ஆண்மகன் பாடும் பாடலின் ஆரம்பம் முதல் கடைசி வரை பெண்களின் குரலே கேட்கிறது, ஆனால் அப்பெண்களின் குரல் கேட்கும்போதெல்லாம் பெண்களை நினைத்தே கோபம் வருவது ஏனோ ? என்ன மாயமோ ? நன்றாக யோசித்துப்பாருங்கள்,
அதுதான் ராஜாவின் கம்போசிங் வித்தை !! .... இந்த ஹம்மிங் பாட இயலாத அளவுக்கு சிக்கலான ஒன்று , வாயை மூடிகொண்டே பாடவேண்டும் , நெஞ்சாங்குழிக்குள் இருந்து வெளிவரும் அந்த சத்தம் மட்டுமே இசையோடு கலந்த கேட்கவேண்டும், இந்த பெண்களின் கோரஸ் பாடல் முழுவதும் வாயையே திறக்காமல் பாடும்படியான நோட்ஸ் இது , வாயை திறக்காமல் இவ்வளவு பெரிய ஹம்மிங்கை உணர்வு பூர்வமாக பாடுவது மிக கஷ்டம், அன்று முதல் இன்று வரை ராஜாவின் கோரஸ் குயில்கள் கூட ஹம்மிங்கில் கூட ஒரு துளி சுருதி தப்பாமல் பயணிக்கிறார்கள் ... அவர்கள் எல்லோரும் தங்கள் முன்னே நின்று கொண்டு இருக்கும் ராஜா தங்கள் இசைப்பயணத்தை என்றாவது ஒரு நல்லபாடல் தந்து துவக்கி வைப்பார் என்ற ஆசையோடு .. இவர்கள் பாக்கியவான்கள் ..

ஒரு இசையமைப்பாளன் ஏதோ ஒரு வாத்தியத்தை வாசிக்கலாம், ஏதாவது ஓரிரு பாடல்களை பாடலாம், தனக்கு தெரிந்த பாணியில் இசையை தரலாம் , அவ்வளவுதான், ஆனால் இந்த இளையராஜா ஒரே வருடத்தில் ஐம்பது படங்களுக்கு இசை அமைக்கிறார், பாடல் வரிகளை எழுதுகிறார், கிடார் , பியானோ முதற்கொண்டு அத்தனை வாத்தியங்ளையும் வாசிக்கிறார், கிளாசிகல், வெஸ்டர்ன் முதற்கொண்டு எல்லாவிதமான இசைகளிலும் சகல விதமான இசைத்தளங்களிலும் நின்று ராஜ பாட்டை நிகழ்த்துகிறார், அதுவும் இல்லாமல் சோகம், தாபம், காமம், கிண்டல், அன்பு, காதல் என் எல்லாவிதமான பாடல்களிலும் பொருந்தும்படி பாடுகிறார் என்றால் என்ன மனிதர் இவர்??

இவரை எந்த மஞ்சமாக்கன் கேள்வி கேப்பது, இளையராஜாவின் காலம் முடிந்துவிட்டது என எவன் சொன்னது ?
முப்பத்து ஐந்து வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு இவர் இசை அமைத்த இந்தப்பாடலை கடந்த சனிக்கிழமை பாடும்போது தமுக்கம் மைதானமே நெஞ்சடைத்து போனது , கேட்க்கும் எல்லோரும் தவிக்கிறார்கள், அதுவரை குதூகல ஓலமிட்டு கொண்டிருந்த ரசிகன் மயான அமைதியில் சுண்டி போகிறான் , அவரவர் நெஞ்சில் முட்டிக்கொண்டு இருக்கும் கடந்தகால சோகங்கள் வெளிவர துடிக்க அவன் கண்ணில் நீர்த்திவலைகளோடு மேடையை பார்க்கிறான் , அப்பேர்பட்ட அழகான மேடை மறைந்து இளையராஜாவும் கோரஸ் தேவதைகளும் மட்டும் தோன்றுகிறார்கள்,

மனிதர்கள் எல்லோரும் அடக்கி வைத்திருக்கும் சோகத்தை யாரிடமாவது சொல்ல துடிக்கிறார்கள், ராஜாவின் இசை மூலமாக எல்லோரும் அந்த சோகத்தை முகம் தெரியா ஒளியிடம், காற்றிடம் தம் சோகத்தை பகிரிந்து கொள்கிறார்கள், தங்கள் சோகத்திற்கு வார்த்தையிட்டு சொல்ல தெரியாதவர்கள் எல்லோரும் ராஜாவின் குரலோடு பயணப்படுகிறார்கள், எல்லோரையும் தன சங்கீத பயணத்தில் இணைத்து கொள்ளும் இளையராஜா அந்த பயணத்தின் முடிவில் அவர்களின் சோகத்தை மட்டும் பிய்த்து எடுத்துக்கொண்டு அவர்களை ஆசுவாசபடுத்திவிட்டு அடுத்த பாடலுக்கு போய்விடுகிறார் ..

ஆண்கள் அடக்க இயலாத போது தங்கள் உற்ற நண்பர்களிடம் சொல்கிறார்கள், நெஞ்சம் புலம்புகிறது, ஒரு ஆணின் புலம்பல் இப்படிதான் இருக்கும் நானும் இப்படிதான் புலம்பியிருப்பேன்... என்றெல்லாம் மனசு கிடந்து தவிக்க முதல் இடையிசை ஆரம்பிக்கிறது , Napoleon Selvaraj அண்ணன் தொண்டையிலிருந்து கிளம்பும் காற்று அந்த புல்லாங்குழலுக்குள் சென்று வரும்போது எப்படி இத்தனை அவலமாக சோகத்தை புலம்புகிறது , இத்தனை நேர்த்தியாக ஒரு காற்று வாத்தியத்தில் கூட சோகத்தை தத்ரூபமாக வரும்படி நோட்ஸ் எழுத எவரால் இயலும் , ராஜாவை அன்றி .. ஆகையால்தான் ராஜா இசையின் தெய்வம் ஆகவே பார்க்கப்படுகிறார் , ஆனால் இப்போது இருக்கும் இசையமைப்பாளர் என்ற போர்வையில் இருக்கும் சிலுவண்டுகள் பாடல்களை கம்ப்யூட்டர் உதவியோடு பாடுகிறார்கள், அவர்கள் என்ன கத்தினாலும் கம்ப்யூட்டர் தானாகவே ஸ்ருதியை சரி செய்து கொள்(ல்)கிறது , வெட்கமில்லாமல் தங்கள் பெயர்களை போட்டு பாடகார்களாகிக்கொள்கிறார்கள், தைரியம் இருந்தால் ஒரே ஒரு முறை ராஜாவின் மேடை ஏறி ஒரு பாடலை தைரியமாக பாடி காட்டுங்கள், அவர்களே உண்மையான பாடகர்கள்,

அந்த மட்டில் எங்கள் ராஜாவின் குழுவில் இருக்கும் Senthildass Singer , Sathya, உட்பட எல்லோரும் அத்தனை பெரும் புடம் போட்ட தங்கங்கள் .. கோரஸ் தேவதைகள் குரலை பேசப்போய், எங்கெங்கோ பொய் விட்டோம் பாருங்கள் ... ஆனால் மதுரை கான்செர்டில் பாடகர்களும், இசைஞானியின் இசை வாத்திய தளபதிகளும் Shruthi Raj ,Sadasudarsanam Sada Sasi அண்ணா, ஜெயிச்சா சிங்காரம் அண்ணா , உட்பட அத்தனை பெரும் பின்னி எடுத்தார்கள் , இது போல ஒரு நேர்த்தியான இசை குழு ராஜாவை தவிர வேறு யாருக்கும் இருக்கவே இயலாது .. இவர்கள் எல்லோரும் பணத்துக்காக , வாழ்வாதாரத்துகாக வாசிப்பவர்கள் இல்லை, ராஜாவிடம் மட்டுமே தங்கள் திறமைக்கான தீனி இருக்கும் என்று நம்பும் ஆயகலை வலுனர்கள் இவர்கள் ...

இதைவிட ஒரு காதலன் எப்படி தன்னை ஏமாற்றிவிட்டுபோன காதலியை நினைத்து புலம்ப இயலும் , 1986 இல் வெளிவந்த "முதல் வசந்தம்" படத்திற்காக இப்பாடல் ஒளிப்பதிவு செய்யப்பட்டது , அன்று முதல் இப்பாடல் ஒலிக்காத நள்ளிரவு நேரங்களே இல்லை, எங்காவது காதலி விட்டுவிட்டுப்போன ஒரு அப்பாவி காளை ஒருவன் ஏதோ ஒரு மூலையில் அமர்ந்து இப்பாடலைக்கேட்டு கண்ணீர் விட்டு கொண்டிருக்கிறான், இப்பாடல் ஒலிக்காத நள்ளிரவு பண்பலை வானொலிகளே இல்லை , இதே பாடல் உமா ரமணன் Uma Ramananஅவர்களும் பாடிய ஒரு வெர்சன் இருக்கிறது, மிக மிக அருமையாக உமாவும் பாடியிருப்பார், ஆனால் ராஜாவின் மந்திரக்குரலால் பாடப்பட்ட வெர்சன் மிக பிரபலமாக இருந்தாலும் உமா ரமணன் பாடிய வெர்சனை தனித்து கேட்டு ரசிப்போரும் உண்டு,...

மதுரையில் இளையராஜா இப்பாடல் பாடி முடித்த பின் ஒரிரு நொடிகள் கழித்து தான் எல்லோரும் நினைவுக்கு வநதனர், தமுக்கமே சிலிர்த்து எழுந்து ராஜாவுக்காக கை தட்டியபோது ராஜா உதட்டோரம் ஒரு கர்வமான புன்னைகையோடு நம்மை பார்த்தார் அந்த பார்வை கூறியது.. "ஒரு நாள் போதுமா? இன்றொரு நாள் போதுமா? நான் பாட இன்றொரு நாள் போதுமா"... என்று ...!!!

அன்றைய நிகழ்ச்சியின் முக்கியமான ஐந்து பாடல்களில் இப்பாடலும் இதற்கடுத்த பாடலும் மிகபெரும் வரவேற்பை பெற்றன, அது என்ன பாடல்?? யார் பாடினார்?? என்ன அனுபவங்கள் ??.. அப்பப்பா !!! மதுரையில் நடந்த ராஜாவின் இசை கச்சேரியை பற்றி நிறைய இன்னமும் நிறைய பேச ஆசை .. ஆனால் வரும் தமிழ் புத்தாண்டு அன்று ஏப்ரல் பதினான்காம் தேதி ராஜ் டீவீயில் பாருங்கள், ராஜ் டிவியில் "சித்திரை திருநாள் அன்று நம் ராஜாவின் சங்கீத திருநாள் " . வாழ்வின் சில நேரங்கள் மட்டுமே இது போன்ற மகா உற்சவங்கள் காண கிடைக்கும் , எங்கள் பாக்கியம் அருகில் இருந்தே பார்த்துவிட்டோம், நீங்கள் எல்லோரும் ராஜ் டிவியில் பாருங்கள் ...

I don't whose fault is it. But the audio in the show that was telecast in Raj TV was very bad. Couldn't enjoy much. Lot of editing. Like cricket with advts, editing was done to showcase what they wanted to hear/see.

Skipped directly to it, couldn't resist. Happens to be a duet with less time vocal of IR, but indeed he takes 2 powerful lines as a punch. Still craving to hear him go solo on this song ... maybe in next Concert.

- Liked the way the singer in the violet chudi (whats her name, please) looking quite sharpely at IR, everytime.
- IR fingers were not silent, awesome !

அனிதா, பிரியஷினி இணைந்து கலக்கிய போடா போடா புண்ணாக்கு - இசைக்கச்சேரிகளில் இதுவரை நான் பார்த்திராத மேடை நடிப்பு. இருவருமே போட்டிக் கொண்டு பாடலின் ஆரம்ப வசனங்ககளை உச்சரித்த விதம் சிறப்பு.

ஆனந்த ராகம் - வயலின் மழையால் நனைந்தேன். இசைப்பிரவாகம்.

சுரேந்தர் வருகை ஆச்சரியப்படுத்தியது. நடுக்கத்துடன் பாடினாலும், எதிர்பார்ப்பையும் மீறி கீதம் சங்கீதத்தை சிறப்பாக பாடி முடித்தார்.

மனோ(ஜானகி) to பிரியதர்ஷினி: "போதும் போதும் ரொம்ப நல்லாப் பாடுற! உனக்கு எப்போதும் என் ஆசிர்வாதம் உண்டு" என்றவுடன் வெடித்துச் சிரித்த ராஜா!

நேற்றிலிருந்து 10முறையாவது பார்த்திருப்பேன். ராஜாவை நெருங்கிச் சென்றுதரிசித்தது போன்ற உணர்வு!

ராஜா சார், தான் இசை அமைத்த பாடல்களை கேட்பதே இல்லை என்று சில பல பேட்டிகளில் கூறி இருக்கிறார். ஆனால் தான் பாடும் போதும் மற்றவர்கள் பாடும் போதும் சிறு தவறு இருந்தாலும் கண்டு பிடித்து விடுகிறார். எப்படி?

அமுதே தமிழே பாடலை நாமெலாம் ஒரு 30 ஆண்டுகளாய் கேட்டு கொண்டி இருக்கிறோம். இத்தனை வருடம் கேட்ட பின்பும் தப்பும் தவறுமாய் பாடும் இசை பயின்றவர்களுக்கு மத்தியில்....

என்று ஏற்ற இறக்கங்களுடன் ராஜா சார் எப்படி சரியாக நுணுக்கமாக பாடுகிறார்? அவர் இசை அமைத்து ரெக்கார்டிங் செய்ய இந்த பாடல்களுக்கு 5 மணி நேரங்கள் ஆகி இருக்கலாம். அதன் பிறகு இந்த பாடல்களை கேட்க்க அவரு எப்போது நேரமிருந்திருக்கும்?


அவர் இசை அமைத்த பாடல்களை அவருக்கு நினைவு இருக்காதா என்று கேட்க தோன்றவில்லை.. நேற்று என்ன சாப்பிட்டோம் என்று இன்று பலருக்கு நினைவிருப்பதில்லை.


தான் இசை அமைத்த பாடல்களில் அவருக்கென்று சில பேவரைட்ஸ் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.

Some notable highs :
1. Orchestra - Gets better with each concert and I must say they are near perfect the original. Moreover, they seem to relish their job.
2. Sweet surprises like amudhe thamizhe, Geetham sangeetham [Oh how much I missed SPB!!], pOttu vaitha kaadhal
3. Hariji's awesome AlAp improvisation in Yaman and KeeravAni before the songs
4. The young brigade of female singers like Anita, SriVardhinim Priyadharshini and veterans Chitra , UmaRamanan, Sadhana Sargam giving a fairly neat performance[ thanks to Bhava's very limited circulation]
5. Directors like Myskin, Prakashrai showing their respect and love for Raja in a short and sweet way.
Note : somehow I am not OK to include Bala in this list.
6. Interesting interlace between inji iduppazhagi and chinnamanikkuyilE and thank God for omitting Oh Priya

Some Lows too :
1. Except Haricharan, Senthildas, Hariharan, glaring gap in the male singers department. Karthik and Yuvan should be happy with just music direction.
2. Even Vijay Prakash was a let down in "Ohm Shivoham". He went overboard and also off shruthi at many places.3. Suhasini was at her artificial best

'MADURAI MARIKKOZHUNTHU VAASAM' should have been there and Opt to be in the List for Madurai Concert (Since Mano - Chitra were also Present for Original Voice).

I listened to this program recently. IR's has great affection towards the language on the same lines of Bharathi. There is no wonder that Kamal compared Raja on par with Bharathi as far as the talent goes. If you judge Raaja purely based on the talent, it is very clear that he has a permanent place in the history of Tamilnadu.
