Yes, I was waiting for some action to take place. Pretty interesting when you observe birds and animals, patience is the key and you can get really good shots. Also, it is a cropped image (no special effects, corrections) - actual image size will be a lot bigger - advantage of shooting in RAW :)

V_S
29th January 2012, 07:26 AM
Thanks sathya. Good to know that you didn't do any post-processing. Yes, definitely shooting in RAW makes a big difference, as we have lot of options too. I have lot of RAW files still left on my disk, no action taken, very lazy.

Thanks LM and Kalyasi. Yes, it was taken at a wide angle in 'intelligent auto', as I didn't have much time to take that shot, as I was driving. Luckily, no other vehicle was on the road.
Another one here. I used to see this picture often to get a serene and meditate feeling. Not much there, but it looks calm.

Use the tags [ IMG] and [ /IMG] (without spacing) to copy the url here.

For instance, from the above example:

How do you like this? Is it good, bad or worst? Taken from inside Lincoln Memorial to align the Washington Monument (at the far), mainly to focus some great clouds. If I would have gone past the memorial, I would have got a shot of clouds and the monument, but I felt it would have been just another picture. Would like to hear your comments.

Very good, would have been better if the angle had eliminated the lone pillar at the background (2nd row) and the Washington monument is in the center - between 2nd and 3rd pillar in the front row.

Thanks sathya and Kalyasi. Sathya. Yes, I agree with your view point, that would have been nicer, but as you see, there is another pillar at the back (right behind the first and second pillar). I won't allow me to go to center, even if I go, I don't get the full length of pillars and the full view of the sky. That's if you see I have centered the picture with two back pillars. But definitely will have to improve, and there must be some other way too.

A deeper DOF could have done so much more help. Would have added the 'emphasis' factor. A lower angle could've made it even more dramatic.

Excellent colors from your camera. I loved the sunset.. I am still with my Panasonic FZ-28 with 18x leica lens. The main reason I could not leave this camera behind is because of the leica lens. Leica used to manufacture F2.8 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicfz20) throughout the zoom range (from 36-432 mm) for earlier Panasonic models, now they are not doing that, but still one of the best lens.

Back in 2007, even I was split between Panasonic FZ and Nikon D40 (40x, 70 and 70S).
Decided to go with Nikon SLR just because I needed it for professional reasons and the option to upgrade. I personally wanted to get a Panasonic only.. especially due to the Leica factor.

The sciography which naturally occurs when the source of light is behind the subject. I didn't apply anything special, except for choice of angle.. keeping it very low and orienting the sun (It was almost sunset.. Between 4 and 5 in the vening I think) in the centre. The inherent geometry is killer, seriously!

Question to all: What is your opinion on 3rd party lenses like Sigma, Tamron, Tokina etc? For example Canon 100 - 400 L comes to 1400-1500 dollars. Sigma 50-500, almost the same price, but with a better focal range.
I am not worried about cost - Given a choice - Which would you choose from, from the same price range? a slightly more versatile third-party or the OEM with slightly lesser feature?
I presume there cannot be straight-forward answer. Just asking for experiences and opinion.

Yes.
Friend got a cheap Sigma lens 70-300 IS lens (with that macro switch that works between 200-300) for his D90. It worked amazing. I don't know the quality of their optics.. but their build quality is very poor. Feels very feeble and plasticky.
WRT Canon lenses, I guess the pricing is almost similar and it would be obvious to go for the Canon counterparts for a few dollars more.

KV, That was wonderful  B&W is always special. Dilbert, wow again for that bird capture, well done!.
Thanks Kalyan. Fireworks is always very interesting time and place to take pictures. I too love low-light photography. That's why I am with sathya, as I love Canon there. I believe Canon were the ones who first introduced the CMOS sensors (for low noise) while Nikon were still using CCD sensors. Eventhough they fared well in day light (except for the moire effect), Canon stole the limelight in low-light (atleast till couple of years ago). We could see that in lot of reviews. But now, Nikon started using CMOS and catching up or even excelled Canon. I heard the Canon EOS 550D has all (if not more) the features of Canon 7D. But when it comes to handling, continuous shooting, schneider lenses, nothing can beat Nikon. Hate to compare, but I love this balance very much.

HDR tutorial please. I specifically shot the Taj with 6 different exposures, in RAW and in JPEG to make a HDR and yet, I fail everytime.

Things I follow for HDR , which has worked pretty much 95% of the time

1) Tripod is must when we are shooting Landscape in any light

2) I use ABE option set it to those 3 exposures I need. Depending on the lighting condition of course

3) Set you ISO accordingly.

4) For Nite shots have the Bigger F Stop number to allow more light

5) For Day / Sunset /Sunrise kind of shots , depending on lighting condition and colors which I want to enhance like water , some greenery etc.

6) Set your camera to Multi-shot with timer mode

7) The most important piece , which will spoil your picture 9times out of 10 . Pl make sure everything is set to Manual (including focus). switch your VC,IS or any other kind of image stabilizer to off mode.

If you follow these steps you can't go wrong in creating HDRs. Again HDRs have evolved so much over the years. You can create those 3- 5 different pics using 1 RAW itself if you buy a good software , which is what most magazines do.

Hope this information helps.

Thanks Dilbert for the HDR tutorials. So, how many shots should be (automatically) taken with different exposures and contrast to make it a HDR. Is three exposure is always enough? I think the software processes all these seperate images and merges into a HDR one, if I am not wrong.

Sathya, great snaps, I really loved the take-off ones (first, second and fifth), sixth one, just like that goose is replying to you.

V_S , HDR (Hight Dynamic Range) Images are mainly use to enhance elements which you will miss in your regular single shot.
To your question Its up to the user how many you want to include for 1 HDR.(example : friend of mine used like 8-9 pics for shooting Vatican City at Nite)
However when you use AEB option you will get 3 pics , which is good enough for creating HDR.

Sathaya good pics - just a suggestion use Ai Servo on Canon aka continuous mode in Nikons to get better results when you are shooting a moving object(s). Another trick which ofcourse we learnt during college days.. Keep your sight active on the expected path of your object (aka comeon) ahead of time. This is will provide you with some really great views aka shots.. which you would missed it otherwise by chasing them ...;-)

You are spending money copyrighting these pics?

Any recommendations for good backpack which can hold 2 bodies, 5-6 lenses (one 400 or 500 mm lens), tripod, laptop and other accessories. I had a look at Kata 467i which is pretty reasonable for my budget.
Suggestions and inputs are welcome (Only back-packs)

Good stuff Sathya go for it, initially when you are learning you will be carrying too many lenses :) , but once you start understanding your lenses you will carry only the lenses that are needed for the subject. Also more important changing lenses in dust / moisture filled atmosphere is dangerous for both Camera and lenses all it takes is few seconds between changing lenses. you need to pay some serious attention, carry a camera cover buy a cheap one atleast. You get your thanga mani worth , if it saves your gadgets from even 1 rain.

Welcome to the most addictive ,expensive hobby :)
