Chennai has some worst minuses which even its own residers dislike to the core. Kattaayam Bangalore is good in such aspects. Bloody there is not even a map outside both Koyambedu and Central Station, to help newcomers. Agreed that is not citizen's fault but govt's. I mean that this bad attitude starts with Govt itself and gets carried over to the last last tamil citizen.

Comparatively i have heard and seen and experienced some more hospitality in bangalore than chennai. Ppl in chennai are not cool. My small exp is, I never knew there is a saravaNa bhavan inside Central itself. I came out and asked few guys is there a Saravana Bhavan nearby. 2 guys gave me the most weird look, i was scared internally. Then i turned on GPS and found out myself that there is one inside itself! Later i realied, those 2 guys were suspecting me :rotfl:

I am not saying chennai is bad, just becos of this. Even if u remove this, i have worst stories.

Regarding this movie portrayal, that mobile-misuse-student, i guess the mentality is everywhere not just in chennai. Hope many ppl know that, outsiders coming to bangalore feel there is more and more sexual-liberty(yes) in bangalore, and try to make use of that.

LM, it is! Even in Shanti Nagar, Banshankari & Shivaaji Nagar, there are maps! In chennai, there is only one Koyuambedu for both local and outstation bus terminals. But bangalore, both local and outstation terminus are distributed. Majestic is NOT the only one.

I've never seen a map in Majestic Bus Stand (both moffusil and BMTC) and in the station. Koyambedu CMBT has clear markings about which bus is stationed in which platform.

LM, speaking only about city maintenance, which is govt-aspect and not people's, there are some pluses in Bangalore.

Map - there is maps both in Majestic, shanti nagar and Shivaji nagar. I have seen. Majestic / Kempegowda was built long ago itself. Koyambedu is a recent one. Needless to say which one is clean. Bangalore has many big flyovers and most were built some 8 yrs before itself. Dust bin management is better. There are widespread public toilets.

Auto is costly but mostly metered, so if its costly for a specific A to B, then its the same for all autowalas. Atleast some control is there.

Worst things - Bangalore traffic(ppl) are the worst behaved ones on whole country. Both 2 wheelers and Car drivers. Chennai is better in this.

That is not affecting anyone, though agree, chennai buses are superb efficient in clearly mentioning the source and dest. Also, the Volvo/Cusion/NonAC/WhiteBoard/Yellowboard classification is even present in chennai! And also Buses are very well connected to almost all areas. Thatswhy most ppl take buses in chennai and also thats the same very reason there are quite less takers of Auto, in chennai. And of course becos of that only auto walas charge excess. but not everyone is interested in buses and also not everyone can afford the aniyaaya charges of auto.

Regular bus commuters in bangalore depend upon Bus numbers and new comers always has to ask others if this bus goes there. Thats a thing bangalore BMTC needs to correct. Volvos display areas properly.

And, in chennai bus boards, everything is only in engligh?!? No tamil?!??!

Dig and a long one at that.

sakala,
Too much support to B'lore-ah :)

Ok,as a kannadiga who has lived in Chennai(though very long back)and who keeps visiting chennai atleast once every couple of years,I find both cities have their pro's and con's.

B'lore is probably cleaner but chennai is not as bad as it was.Food is extremely costly in chennai-no darshini's and bakeries(a good business idea to start a chain).Chennai has it's T Nagar which nothing(even the lanes of commercial street)in bangalore can match.

Chennai is very hot but b'lore is fast catching up,Chennai has a vibrant culture which b'lore can never replicate(becos majority of citizens here are immigrants and so no chance a culture could develop).

B'lore is more cosmopolitan and favours outsiders.

SS,even in Chennai bus boards are in Tamil only.

Auto in Chennai is day light robbery but bus service is efficient .B'lore -Auto is metered but still very costly and is catching up on the bus service,Transport minister Ashok has done some good work.

B'lore is supposed to be progressive and Chennai conservative(have no idea on this,I quit the city 22 years back).

Personally, would like to live in Chennai, the weather is the only deterrent.Even last week when I was there,a/c illama oru nimisham irukka mudiyala.

but what to do with shopping? And for Bangalore, Jayanagar 4th block? and other areas may be slowly catching up. Also, I find petty shops and small supermarkets widely spread in bangalore. Heard that once, Most autos ran in the city belonged to Stalin. Later, they where 'given free' to Mandhiris, and then to MLAs and now to police. As the profit it give may be getting less in long term, and other bigger options like Real Estate, spectrum etc were available for Money making

Reg. real-estate-prices, I heard a theory from a reasonably-well-informed-business-man.

During the previous decades, tax-cheated-corrupt-etc-black money was stashed away in tax havens abroad ("swiss banks").

There were many hassles with that - can't use much in one's life time, danger of losing all money if code is lost, "finger-print-iris-scan" kind of newer measures make sure next-gen cannot access it etc.

So, the new trend is like this :
step 1 : Take the black money as before to tax havens
step 2 : bring it into India ("white") as FDI from letter pad company to letter pad company
step 3: invest in real estate ("greenfield properties")

Atleast some control is there. have to agree after having lived in Bangalore for a few years. Have personally had experience of Cops helping us get Autos late at night and also the price is ok (inspite of the ridiculous 1 1/2 times meter, twice the meter rules). 20 years back the meter system in Calcutta (now Kolkota) was quite funny. I'm not sure whether such meters were universal there but most were like that.

They didn't charge based on distance but based on "time taken" In other words, the taxi meter didn't need any connection to the odometer, it was a simple clock calibrated to show time in Rs :-)

The traffic was so bad there that you won't know how much will be the bill - it depended on how fast / slow the car could go (and not entirely dependent on distance) :-)

Those who invest black money( a form of money laundering) can spend more - offer more for the land and building materials raising the cost for all.
This is very common. People who sell their homes in California can afford to buy houses at prices higher than local prices in other states raising the price for all. I have seen this happen.

Arriving in an unfamiliar city with no idea of its street ethos can be a recipe for disaster. Ask the three students from Kolkata who came to Chennai to make contact with their distance education institution, the University of Madras. Two of them were robbed of their luggage and money by an autorickshaw driver who offered them a ride from Chennai Central.

http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/chennai/article3439800.ece?homepage=true

The autorickshaw driver who made off with the luggage of the students represents what could be called a major group of defectors. As opposed to co-operation (in the economic sense) which produces win-win outcomes, these foolish, short-sighted individuals create massive losses for the city's overall economy by ruining its reputation globally. Certainly, the majority of autorickshaws pose no such threat. Also, there is the small group of “tourist-friendly autos”. These drivers do not get hostile but ask for arbitrary fares all the same. In general, an autorickshaw ride in the city can be a costly affair.

It is an irony that the youth who were robbed had a masters degree in geography. Did they consult a map of the city before arriving, to find their co-ordinates? Whether it is Google Maps or Open Street Maps, it is possible to get a mental picture of where one is going, the distance involved and landmarks. Google Transit goes a step further, and provides actual travel options. A community initiative, India Bus Routes Mapping Project (http://busroutes.in/chennai/) has a database of bus routes and a helpful map.

The story of the Kolkata students confirms something Chennaiites have always suspected — the costly CCTV cameras at many city junctions are mere duds, paid for by the taxpayer. No footage of the autorickshaw driver was available even near the VVIP stretch of Anna Square Police Station. The police rigorously check vehicle documents of two-wheelers at several places in the city everyday. How about inspecting the papers of autorickshaws inside Chennai Central and elsewhere? After the robbery, the police could have at least sent a wireless message to launch a massive check and help the students get their certificates back.

Had a horrible experience with an autodriver last evening in Bangalore. No.. this is not related to meter or anything. Our two wheeler just kissed the back of the auto. For that, he was displaying all the kind of problems that are in his auto and was demanding Rs.3000/-. Actual cost to repair can't exceed Rs.100/-. After hours of wait and receiving some threats, abuses we finally settled everything with Rs.1200/-. Auto kaaran naalae pathikittu varuthu ippo ellam. I think the experience will be same everywhere. Autokaaranunga ippadi claim pannumnae standard ah sila prachanaikal auto la vittu vachirupanunga pola! %%@#%^
