It’s a path that Vijay laid for himself :
Director Prabhu Deva is currently working on his next Bollywood project, Action Jackson with Ajay Devgn and Sonakshi Sinha in the lead. A popular weekly got in touch with the actor / choreographer, who has been giving back to back hits up North and asked him if he is in touch with the South actors. He said, “I’ve never been a very social person. But very rarely Vijay and myself give a call to each other and talk.”
When the Pokkiri director was asked if he would take some credit for Vijay’s current standing in the industry, as Pokkiri was a major break for Vijay in 2007, he modestly denied saying, “It’s a path that Vijay laid for himself. His growth is inspiring and I’m sure he’s going to reach bigger heights”.
Meanwhile, Prabhu Deva has also signed another movie titled Singh is Bling with actor Akshay Kumar in the lead.

Director Shankars regular for 'Vijay 58'
Director Chimbudevens Oru Kanniyum Moonu Kalavaanigalum was met with good critical response where the director had taken a different theme, time concept, to narrate his story. After this film, Chimbudeven is all set to direct IlayathalapathyVijay in a project that is said to belong to a fantasy genre.
Naan Ee Sudeep is on board this film while the involvement of Sridevi, Deepika Padukone and Shruti Haasan are widely speculated. Meanwhile, an important technician has been confirmed in 'Vijay 58' which is art director T. Muthuraj who is a regular with Shankars films like Nanban and Ai to his credit.
Chimbudevens projects are generally an art directors delight and Muthuraj would be bringing his in-depth experience to the project. Meanwhile music director A R Rahman is almost confirmed for this project. Stay tuned for more updates.

For authentic details on 'Vijay 58' ...May 09, 2014
The director of Vijay's next movie, Chimbudevan, has made his entry into Twitter (@DirChimbudevan). He is known for his 'out of the box' thinking in all his movies starting from Imsai Arasan to the recent Oru Kanniyum Moonu Kalavaanigalum. 'Twitter-atis' would be eagerly looking forward to Chimbu's tweets, moreso on his next Vijay project (Vijay 58) which is currently in the pre-production and planning stage. This is what Chimbu had to say right after joining Twitter.
"Ungaludaiya aatharavukku migavum nandri. Details about my film with Vijay would be revealed soon :-)"
The likes of Sudeep, Deepika Padukone, Sridevi and Shruti Haasan are touted to be in talks for prominent roles in the film. A.R.Rahman is likely to sign up as the composer while Muthuraj would be the art director. More on 'Vijay 58' from Chimbu, awaited.

Music director GV Prakash is delighted that his Vaanganna Vanakkanganna from the Vijay-starrer Thalaivaa has won the Most Popular Tamil Song award at the Gaana Awards.
The Gaana awards, an initiative by Times Internet, were determined on the basis of actual play-outs and user consumption across digital platforms on Gaana.com, which is India's No. 1 music broadcasting service with 9 million active monthly users and 6 million apps downloaded in about a year's time.
Says GV Prakash, "This is the first time that I've got this award and I'm ecstatic about it for at a national level, they have said that this is the most popular Tamil song. This is a gift I didn't expect."
The song is special to the music director who says, "For 14 weeks, this number was the number one song on Radio Mirchi. It even overtookAathe AathefromAadukalamwhich was in the number one slot for 12 weeks."
The song is special for one other reason. "When director AL Vijay and I decided that it would be nice to have actor Vijay sing this song, AL Vijay gave the first line of the songVaanganna Vannakkangannaand Na Muthukumar wrote the entire song."
Finally, what did Vijay say to the song having been chosen the most popular song at the Gaana awards and he says, "Vijay was very happy. When I told him, 'This song has won an award because you sang it well', he said, 'The song is a super song. So, it deserves an award.'" http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/tamil/music/GV-Vijay-thrilled-with-Gaana-award/articleshow/34884572.cms

Vijay 58' - A first time pairing and a much-awaited comebackMay 11, 2014
Even though Vijay is currently focusing on Kaththi, directed by Murugadoss with Samantha for company, news about his next film to be directed by Chimbudevan (Vijay 58) is already doing the rounds every other day.

Some really heavyweight names were touted to be part of the film's cast, without any confirmation. Names such as Sudeep, Sridevi, Deepika Padukone and Shruti Haasan have all been reported so far with Sudeep himself confirming that he is likely to do the film as he was impressed with the script and his role.

Now it is certain that Sridevi and Shruti Haasan would also be sharing the screen space with Vijay in this film. This would be Sridevi's first straight Tamil film after her comeback, which was made memorable by English Vinglish. Shruti would meanwhile be working with Vijay for the first time in her booming career which just seems to get better and better with every passing year.

A Vijay-regular signs on for 'Vijay 58'
Vijay's next film, after he completes Kaththi, is with director Chimbudevan. This happens to be Vijay's 58th film and expectations are riding high among fans. Shibu Thameens and P.T.Selvakumar would be producing this fantasy entertainer.
Muthuraj has been signed on as the art director while A.R.Rahman is in talks to compose for the film. We now have authentic info that acclaimed cinematographer Natraj (Natty) has also been roped in to do duty behind the lens for this flick.
Natty has dabbled with acting in a few films while his work as a cinematographer has been noted in hit Hindi films such as Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal. He has already worked with Vijay in films such as Youth and also for a song in Thuppakki.
'Vijay 58' would begin its filming in August / September after Ilayathalapathy completes work on Kaththi.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/tamil/movies/news-interviews/When-Vijay-brought-a-smile-to-a-majors-daughter/articleshow/35605143.cms

Actor Vijay recently chose to take time off his hectic schedule to meet Arsheya, the three-year-old daughter of one of India's bravest heroes, Major Mukund Varadarajan. The Chennai-based Major from the 44th Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles had lost his life fighting militants in Kashmir on April 25 this year.

The meeting, organized by Chennai-based activist and environmentalist Abdul Ghani, lasted for over 45 minutes at a place near Vadapalani, where the star was shooting. The star's decision to spend time with the child has now caught the attention of film buffs. Says Ghani, "We had organized a tribute meeting on Tuesday and everyone was a little sad after the event. We were driving back home when the Tamil Pasanga song from the Vijay-starrer Thalaivaa started playing on the radio. Arsheya, who was asleep until then, immediately woke up on hearing the song and even started singing along."

It was then that Ghani got to know that little Arshi was a huge fan of the star and that she had seen Thalaivaa with her dad, Major Mukund. The child loved the song so much, that she would immediately begin to dance and sing along, every time it was played. "Once I realized this, I requested Vijay to spend some time with Arsheya. I called up Vijay anna and he immediately agreed," says Abdul, adding, "They had a good time laughing, having fun and clicking selfies. She was extremely thrilled about meeting Vijay. It was heartwarming to see Vijay bring in some happiness to the family at a time they have sunk in gloom."

Murugadoss was supposed to make Akshay-starrer Holiday before Thuppaki'
Meeta Sarkar , Hindustan Times Mumbai, May 26, 2014
In 2002, when Vipul A Shah turned director with Aankhen, he worked with Akshay Kumar for the first time. Ever since, the two have developed a special equation, collaborating on hits like Waqt: The Race Against Time (2005), Namastey London (2007) and Singh Is Kinng (2008), among others. Their latest project is Shahs production, Holiday A Soldier Is Never Off Duty, directed by AR Murugadoss.

Even before he made it in Tamil, titled Thuppaki, Murugadoss narrated the script to me in 2010. I immediately thought that this film will take my association with Akshay further. Luckily, when we narrated the story to him, he loved it too, says Shah.

The film also brings Akshay back with Sonakshi Sinha, with whom he has hits like Rowdy Rathore (2012). Shah says, Their pairing is a great success. People love to watch them together. So its going to be a big plus point for the film.

Holiday is Murugadosss second Hindi film after Ghajini (2008), which was Bollywoods first Rs. 100-crore earner. Shah says that the Hindi version was to be made before Thuppaki. Holiday was supposed to be made in Hindi first, but due to some time constraints, that didnt happen. Our shooting had even begun before the release of Thuppaki, he adds.

The makers are also confident of cashing in on the prevalent patriotic mood in the country, wherein the mass sentiment is to put India first. The films tagline reads, A soldier is never off duty. Even if he has gone on a vacation, he will never back off from being available for his country if theres an issue, explains Shah

So we have unearthed a new type of Executed-Well remakes and generating such a list in tamil may not make a twilight-saga kinda love story though. This looks like one love story that was raised out of sheer desperation.

The thing with remakes is, the producers have to shell-out a huge amount for acquiring the remake rights and then spend producing the movie here, again.

It is sad that some heroes never had nor would ever will, have such luxuries. They instead have to wait for Executed-well remakes.

Normally the managers approach directors and canvass directors with good stories to sign their star. This is applicable to any actor. In Vijay's case, it was his dad. Just like he hit the bulls eye with Thuppakki, many of his choices were off target as well.

A.L. Vijay talks about Thalaivaa and his admiration for Vijay from 10:02

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKHCG4Tkhsc

ALV talks about this school/college days how he used to follow Vijay's style of t-shirts/glasses. Got me thinking on my school days when movies like Kadhalukku Mariyadhai and Ninaithan Vanthai were sensational hits. Vijay's trademark t-shirt/jean combination and his glasses in Ninaithan Vanthai were very famous. That was the time when the next generation of actors were beginning to make a mark and Vijay's rise to the top and his popularity was unprecedented. That was the time we saw Vijay's subtle on-screen performances, graceful dancing and he was neat and well dressed.

You tune into Sun TV's Phillips Top 10 or Raj TV's Top 10 songs you would have Vijay's songs all over it. Sun TV's primetime Neengal Ketta Padal and Pepsi Ungal Choice would have a majority of people saying Vijay is their favourite and would request for Vijay's songs to be played. Talking of songs, Vijay literally owned that department. Glorious days, those.

True, we were all in awe of Prabhudeva's dancing those days, but it was Vijay's dancing that got the fascination of many those days. Remember reading a comment not so long ago in hub about how today's maandada mayilada boys dance better that Vijay. However, ludicrous the comment is, the fact is Vijay danced when dancing in Tamil Cinema was a rarity, with the exception of Kamal offcourse.

Thanks to ALV for documenting his thoughts.

Vijay's impact on this generation is tremendous.

Jayam Ravi got into the industry, wanting to be like Vijay.

Vishal's admiration is all well known now.

GV Prakash is one other admirer of Vijay.

Any commercial movie these days that run well be in a Maan Karate or any other movie has signature Vijay all over it. You see actors dancing to fast kuthu numbers, you see them trying hard to emulate Vijay's numbers.

At times, i am appalled at the apparent hypocrisy to undermine Vijay's impact and performances. People still resort to SAC/Appa taunts and abuses to derive sadistic pleasures and undermine Vijay. But i am also happy that Vijay doesn't worry much and just goes on and on.

He looks good for strong performances for another 10 years, atleast. True credit and recognition is inevitable.

Madhi gave some interesting insights about Vijay.

"Vijay is perfect when it comes to time. During my assistant days itself, I used to hear tales about his punctuality and professionalism. A few years back, I was involved in a 1-day test shoot for Velayudham and he had not changed one bit. He had no attitude, no starry airs and was cool and casual. But his looks, screen presence and mass following have gone to an altogether different level"

'Anbu Thalaivaa' Vijay - forever the Good Samaritan
Jun 08, 2014
Ilayathalapathy Vijay's 40th birthday is coming up on the 22nd of June and his fans are making all possible plans to make the event as grand as possible. All the numerous Vijay fans are already having common 'Vijay Birthday' display pictures in both FB and Twitter, in a sign of grand unity.
Vijay is always known to be a Good Samaritan and his registered fan club members have periodically indulged in social-welfare activities under Vijay's guidance. Yesterday, one such birthday special social welfare function was held in ECR Chennai, and Mr. and Mrs. Vijay participated in the same.
After the couple lit the inaugural lamp, tailoring machines, computers, rice bags were distributed to the deserving but under-privileged. Physically challenged children were also a part of the event and Vijay personally met and greeted all these little ones who wished him in advance for his birthday.
Way to go Ilayathalapathy.

And that tweet of Akshay has got some souls happy (don't know for what reason though). Even during Thuppakki release and promotion, ARM and Vijay themselves said that ARM was going to make this in Hindi first but due to timing and commitments...they decided to do the tamil version first.
Most reviews are very clearly stating that Akshay couldn't bring the charisma that Vijay brought on screen. Vijay continues to make his haters insecure. Great going!!

Happy that many reviews pointing out Vijay being the best among the two. I havent watched Holiday yet. But from whatever I saw in the trailers, Vijay was better than Akshay. Also, Vidyut Jamwal was better than this 'Maida maavu' villain of Holiday. ARM should've atleast retained him.

Hope ARM continues to make movies with Vijay. Missed having Vijay on board right from his first film.

And if it makes someone happy, even my dog hasn't watched Thuppakki.

Akshay has never denied that Holiday is a remake of Thuppakki...... All he had said was he signed the film even before thuppakki was made and he hasn't seen Thuppakki. There is nothing demeaning in both these statements.

Some of his earlier tweets during the initial phase of Holiday....

Started shooting my first film in the new year, the Hindi remake of Thuppakki! Would love to get your good wishes today

What should we call the Hindi remake of Thuppakki? For those who don't know, Thuppakki means a gun in Tamil and is an action thriller

Precisely...not sure why a couple of people are making a song and dance about this. As I said, ARM and Vijay also shared this during Thuppakki promotions and making...that ARM didn't do it in Hindi first cos Akshay needed 3 months to finish his commitments that time and Vijay's dates were immediately available. .so he discussed with Akshay and asked for 6 months extra time to complete Thuppakki...and they could do the hindi version after that. This is so common in film making business.

Anyway...some people and their thinking cannot be changed. Time to move on to other topics. Cheers!!

Lol Dammy, do you really think these are happy souls? Bitter souls who abuse to live and live to abuse.

I also came across the post about Vikatan Water Coopers' ratings based on information gathered by talking with Distributors, theatre owners and cine related people.

Hindu (2003), Forbes (2012 and 2013), UTV Dhanjayan's analysis (2013), Google's most searched actor in the last decade, Highest Satellite rights, Jilla's overwhelming pre-business lead all these cannot stand before Vikatan's ratings, obviously.

Vikatan is the new standard for Tamil Cinema Ratings how Behindwoods is to Box Office Collections and TFU Kannan for Twitter movie ratings. What they say, stay.

Enjoy reliving the magic :)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.rediff.com/movies/2004/apr/23gilli.htm

Don't miss 'Gilli'. You will enjoy it!

We clap, laugh and adore Vijay as he takes over his contemporaries in the race to superstardom.

Gilli portrays Vijay as a comic hero who battles his villains logically while his physical powers are exaggerated dramatically. Having said that, Gilli offers nothing less than sheer entertainment and an edgy thriller for the Tamil film industry, which is deprived of such films.

Director Dharani's magic has worked. He has reached the top gracefully and is sure to remain there for some time. From Dhill to Gilli, Dharani's journey has been calculated, planned, and executed with discipline.

Gilli is certainly not just another remake of a Telugu film (Okkadu). Its story is not about a man's saga or an epic tale. But it ranks high in production values and entertainment.

It is a slice of life about an angry, young, brave Chennai-ite. Vijay's naive bravery earns him the animosity of Prakash Raj, a local dada who chases him and Trisha from Madurai and tries to get him killed. What follows is the crux of the movie. While the movie details the Prakash Raj-Vijay chase, it also explains Vijay's kabaddi aspirations and where they lead him.

The movie starts in top gear and doesn't stop until the end of the first half. The action oscillates between Chennai and Madurai, finally settling down in Chennai.

After Vijay reaches Madurai for a kabaddi match, the movie gears up. Then on until the intermission, action drives the story forward, the best being the car chase, one of the best such sequences in Tamil cinema. Don't also miss the scene where Vijay is pushed to take Trisha as hostage to escape Prakash Raj's clutches.

The second half slows down to unfold the story, romance, and other commercial elements. Dharani has worked hard to keep the movie going with the songs and the chase chasing one another. In this thriller, comedy and songs are a relief from the tension.

The climax with the Ganesh Chaturthi procession and the kabaddi match has been very well planned.

With his reduced makeup and Chennai slang, Vijay personifies yesteryear's Rajnikanth. His facial expressions and comic timing are similar to the superstar's. He shoulders most of the movie and lends it a charming style. He has most of the comic scenes and his dialogue delivery skills have, indeed, improved over time.

Trisha looks classy, but her role is reduced to that of a Barbie doll. But credit must go to designer Nalini Sriram for the costumes in the dance number Appidi Podu. Watch out also for Jennifer as Vijay's sister.

Prakash Raj, however, is the best thing to have happened to Gilli. He comes back to Tamil films as Muthu Pandi, the bad guy. His kingpin-cum-dada role is reminiscent of Kamal Haasan's Virumaandi. Note the scene in which Prakash Raj looks at Trisha and says, "Chellamey! I love you da!"

Composer Vidyasagar uses the Dhool formula here too. His songs call for huge crowds; every song has a celebratory mood. Kokkarakko, shot at night around Chennai sets, is tight and has a strange feel, though it is sung well. Appidi Podu has also been picturised well. This song prepares the audience for the climax. Yaaro Yarivano during the chase scene reminds us of the one in Kakha Kakha.

Vijay sets off on a kabaddi raid in GilliManiraj's grand sets of the Triplicane area are amazing, but only to be expected with a producer like A M Ratnam. Dharani has used them well and they find place in most of the songs and important sequences. Gopinath's camera, V T Vijayan's editing, and Rocky Rajesh's action sequences are top-notch. The sequences speak of the technical wizardry in Tamil cinema.

Aalavandhan boasted of Hollywood-like action sequences, but Gilli quietly grabs the title.

Kudos to Dharani for assembling this team. His screenplay, though it eschews logic, is fast without many flaws. He has also adapted the Telugu film Okkadu to suit Tamil tastes intelligently.

Gilli must be watched in a theatre to be enjoyed. This movie will be a hit, not just for its entertainment and production values, but for understanding and delivering what people want.

That's right Dammy. He has been winning people's poll for ages now, i remember the Hindu poll in 2002 or 2003, where he won by a significant margin. Nothing much has changed.

Golden times. One of my fav article on Vijay.

WHO'S NEXT IN LINE?: Diwali releases of actors Vijay and Vikram, contenders for the `superstar' crown, are doing brisk business. Seen here are the hoardings of their films `Sivakasi' and `Maja.' — Photo: N. Sridharan

CHENNAI: At the 125th day celebrations of `Saami,' the Superstar almost gave his crown to Vikram, who gently turned it down saying: "Oru Suriyan. Oru Chandran. Oru Superstar." (There can only be one sun, one moon and one Superstar.) There is only one throne and the others would have to work hard to win their chair, said Vikram.
Two seats away, on the same stage, sat a younger but more ambitious actor: Ilaya Thalapathy Vijay. To encourage him, Rajnikant had told the crowd that Kavithalaya's next `Thirumalai' would see Vijay in a new avatar. It came good. And how. Vijay hasn't looked back ever since.
`Thirumalai,' `Gilli,' `Madurae,' `Tirupaachi,' `Sachien' and now with `Sivakasi,' Vijay has arrived to stake his claim to the throne.
An average movie like `Sachien' that released along with `Chandramukhi,' is on show for 200 days.
You know the star's status when a first-day-first-show generates mass hysteria, when fans turn fanatical and transform a movie theatre into a dance floor.
If you've watched Superstar movies, you know the pattern: a few male chauvinistic "how-a-girl-must-behave" lines, goofy comic interludes that involve kicking the sidekicks, oodles of style sprinkled all over the song and dance, a couple of gravity-defying fight sequences that can give Matrix a complex, colourful costumes, punches and punchlines, all leading up to the inevitable flashback and the revelation of the conflict and the rise of the hero back to the position of power which was once his.
But what drills home the `successor' imprint deep into the subconscious is the clever manipulation of Superstar symbols and cues in the film. Be it Sivakasi riding into a wedding hall as the `Maama Un Ponna Kudu' song plays during a wedding or when Sivakasi in the second half of the film gets an MGR look-alike to win over people to have the audience on their feet.
The crowd then goes crazy as the Superstar look-alike dances to `Pothuvaaga Yenmanasu Thangam.' Soon, Sivakasi joins the jig with the Superstar look-alike on stage. It's a rage.
And then, there's him dancing along the `Superstar Jodi' Nayantara who plays herself (for the `Kodambakkam area' song) to give the crowd enough reason to come back for yet another show.
While Vijay has successfully sold himself as the Superstar `successor' to the B and C centres, it will be tougher for him to convince the urban audiences given the crude, crass chauvinistic sensibility employed in his cinema.
A little refinement of the language, doing away with sexist statements and fine-tuning his own set of signature style skills and he should be king. At 31, the `Ilaya Thalapathy' has time on his side.
Besides, the man once called Shivaji Rao Gaekwad, soon to be known as `Sivaji' — the king — is still around.

The `Superstar' genre

Yes, Vijay is here to carry Rajnikant's `shtyle' forward. And he does a pretty good job of it, says SUDHISH KAMATH

The imitation works... `Ilaya Thalapathy' Vijay with Trisha in "Gilli"

SUPERSTAR DOES not act as often as he used to. Or maybe `act' is the wrong word because he does not need to. He just needs to be there. Anyway, the point is that he has not been around.

But his brand of cinema is alive, if the success of `Tirupaachi' is any indication.

Tirupaachi is formula-filmmaking at its best with a script which goes like this: First half: Hero introduction song, much like Annamalai (whistle, whistle), brother-sister sentiment, item song with Chaaya Singh, Superstar style comedy, sentiment song, sister gets married to city, Hero meets heroine, song, one out of the three villains bumps off someone important and pushes hero to the edge. Second half: Two songs. Five fights. Hero kills all villains. Numbering some two hundred and eighty seven people in all (approximately, not exaggerated though) including `Pan Parag' Ravi, `Saniyan' Sakade and `Pataasu' Baalu.

With a plot like that, you have no choice but to depend on the star to deliver.

Tirupaachi"

Which is what Vijay does in `Tirupaachi.' Just like he did in `Tirumalai'. In `Gilli'. In `Madurey'.

In Superstar's footsteps

With his mannerisms and a style of his own, the `Ilaya Thalapathy' does remind us of the `Thalapathy.' Yes, of Superstar. One would have thought that no one can ever get into Superstar's shoes but Vijay surely seems to be getting his feet in shape. Critics might call him an imitation. But they also would admit that he does a very good job of it and more successfully than other wannabes.

Let's face it, we have just got to see Superstar on screen twice in seven years and his last film was not exactly the usual `Superstar' brand of cinema. He might have grown old yet, like Abbas says in Padayappa: "What a man!"

But because he has become choosy about his films, we don't get the variety of cinema he used to entertain us with. The masala doses. The truth is that we are all starved of cinema of the Superstar variety. Barring Vijay, the imitations are many and poor. We love Superstar not just for being him, we love him more for the kind of cinema he represented — the kind where he does Superman stunts. Don't we just surrender? Willing suspension of disbelief. The cheesy special effects, the comic timing, the brave do-gooder who will stop at nothing to ensure justice, the man who does not need to chase the girl, the representative of God. When Trisha gives Vijay a bracelet from the Raghavendra temple in `Tirupaachi,' we know who has taken over the legacy of that brand of cinema. The Superstar genre. We want to see a matinee idol thrash the trash out of the bad guys. In style. Period. That's Superstar cinema.

And only Vijay does it consistently with panache, pizzazz and all that jazz that basically means `shtyle' — the quintessential element of Superstar cinema. Make way for the prince.

PS: The king returns next month with Chandramukhi. Yay!

Film Review:''Kannukkul Nilavu''
A TREMENDOUS comeback vehicle for Vijay, wherein he portrays an entire gamut of emotions, Fassil's ``Kannukkul Nilavu'' makes you sit up right from the first scene. And your posture doesn't change till the intermission.
It is not an easy character to envisage or present. Kudos to Fassil and Vijay. The latter projects the role with all its nuances, confusions, expressions and reactions with the right amount of underplay that the role requires. The youngster's potential has been utilised well by Fassil.
Chintamani Cine Arts' ``Kannukkul Nilavu'' is a different story from the ``Kadhalukku Mariyadhai'' team. Shalini's is once again a flawless performance and she achieves it without overdoing things at any point. Raghuvaran is his natural, efficient self. Srividya, `Thalaivaasal' Vijay, Charlie and Dhamu are the other notable performers.
The screenplay keeps you guessing at every turn. But if the climax had been less protracted, the film would have been more enjoyable. A chase in the climax need not be an essential element for a film of this calibre.
Subtlety in scenic presentation and characterisation, suspense without melodrama and spontaneity in reactions (namely, the scene in which Srividya slaps Vijay for going away without telling him) add to the pluses of ``Kannukkul Nilavu.''
The house decor is so predictable in Fassil's movies. The woodwork, the staircase, the furniture - these can take on a different look too, can they not?
Anandakuttan's camera work that allows you to relax and feast on the lush locales, is a significant feature.
Another indisputable highlight is of course, Ilaiyaraja.
``Oru Naal Orukanavu'' by Anuradha Sriram and Jesudas where the excellent beats and melody make a fiesta, ``Roja Poonthotam'' by Unni Krishnan and Anuradha Sriram and ``Iravu Pagalai'' sung by Jesudas which is bound to keep the listener humming it for long, are among the irresistible numbers.
But the crowning glory is the re-recording - the melody that gently falls on your ears and soothens your mind just before the interval and the soul- stirring notes in the last scene are splendid.
Yet another well-made film from Fassil.

Vijay beats rajnikanth!
The opinion poll conducted by the students of Loyola College to determine the most popular film actor in Tamil Nadu came out a surprise for many. The superstar of Kollywood, Rajnikanth and one of the highest paid actors in India took the fourth position. The all time favorite and number one position was bagged by the late Chief Minister of
Tamil Nadu and actor M.G. Ramachandran popularly known as MGR. the second spot went to thespian Sivaji Ganesan. Interestingly, the third place was bagged by Vijay pushing behind Rajni to the fourth position. Looks like Rajni position deteriorated this year as he had topped the list last year.
The most popular among the actresses was Saroja Devi followed by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha. K.R. Vijaya and Jyothika bagged the third and fourth position respectively. Kushboo, the favorite among the actress, took the fifth position.

Pokkiri: The film, released for Pongal 2007, turned out to be Vijays biggest hit. Remake of a Telugu film, director Prabhu Deva packaged it in such a way that it suited the taste of Tamil audiences who danced to the hit tunes of Mani Sharma.
The on-screen chemistry between Vijay and Asin was great and the film turned out to be the highest grossing Tamil film in Kerala.
It did extraordinary business across A, B and C stations in Tamil Nadu and also overseas. It established Vijay as the most saleable star after Rajnikant. Punch line
“Oru Vatti Mudivu Pannitenna En Peacha Nane Kekkamaten”—Pokkiri (Once I’ve made a decision, I won’t even listen to disagreement from myself)

Superstar yarunu kaeta chinna kozhandayum sollum
(If you ask who the superstar is, even a small child will tell you)
- from a song in Raja Chinna Roja

I am a little star, aaven naan superstar
(I will become a superstar)
- from a song in Samsara Sangeetham

There was a time in Tamil Nadu when these two songs would blare from every other tea shop loudspeaker, on All India Radio programmes (like Neyar Viruppam, or ‘Audience Choice’), and on tape recorders in drawing rooms across the state. There were no similarities between the two, either in tune or in setting. One featured Rajinikanth, the undisputed superstar, and the other a five-year-old boy, the son of an ambitious producer, director and actor. But the first lines of both songs captured a reality and an aspiration that defined Tamil cinema in 1989, the year those films hit the screens.

And they capture the reality today, 23 years later: Rajinikanth is still the superstar, and it’s every actor’s dream to inherit the title from him.

Much is promised to the winner. Superstardom means the extreme affection of the people. In May 2011, when Rajinikanth was hospitalised, many of his fans cried and went without food for days, praying for his recovery. There were special pujas in temples and at homes.

Superstardom also means immense political influence. Even though Rajinikanth has kept himself out of politics in the last several years, many remember how his campaign in 1996 dethroned Jayalalithaa. (His famous line, ‘Even God cannot save Tamil Nadu if the AIADMK returns to power’, went viral, just like the ones he delivers on screen.)

It also means national recognition. While most Tamil stars are hardly known outside the southern states, Rajini is well known across the country, and even in a few overseas markets (he has a huge fan following in Japan). His fame seems to be only growing, says SP Muthuraman, who has worked with Rajinikanth in 25 films. And, of course, it means wealth: Rajinikanth gets Rs 35 crore for a movie, according to at least four people in the industry.

Rajinikanth is still the undisputed No. 1 in Tamil cinema. But things have changed too. Despite what the innumerable jokes—or the kind of roles that he takes up in movies—suggest, he is getting older: He is 62. He is not doing as many films as he used to. In the year Raja Chinna Roja was released (1989), he acted in six other movies. Now, he takes up one project in two-three years. His next film, Kochadaiyaan, is an animation feature. While no one suggests the Rajini phenomenon has run its course, talk about who will occupy his throne once he vacates it is getting louder in his adopted home state. (Rajini is a Maratha. His original name is Shivaji Rao Gaekwad).

This is not the first time that the topic has come up. Several names have popped up in the past, including Vijayakanth, Karthik (son of yesteryear actor R Muthuraman) and Prabhu (son of Sivaji Ganesan). Rajini outran all his prospective successors. Vijayakanth and Karthik have launched political parties; Prabhu plays supporting roles.

Vijay looks more likely to occupy that slot. Dhananjayan says, “He has a mass fan following carefully established in the last 20 years. Like Rajini, he is loved by the family audience and has deep reach in smaller towns and villages. He is the true mass actor, like Rajini and Salman Khan. His weakness is his inability to carefully select stories and get involved in their making as Rajini is following, leading to multiple failures and then a hit film. So, if Vijay ends up getting solid and huge films like Baasha in his career, he will end up at the same slot, provided Rajini vacates it. As long as Rajini is acting, Vijay will remain at No. 2 and once he vacates, he will straightaway occupy that slot.”

Blah says Vijay still has a good 10 years ahead of him. This means Vijay could still deliver phenomenal hits, just like Rajinikanth has in the current phase of his career. But Vijay will also find that the throne is very different from the one Rajini occupied. There are three reasons. Two of them arise out of Rajini’s personality and one has to do with the time he occupied the throne.

The best way to define Rajinikanth is that he is impossibly charismatic. And he had charisma in oodles long before he became a star.

Raja Bahadur, Rajini’s friend since his days as a bus conductor in Bangalore, told Forbes India earlier about his presence when he acted in amateur plays: “Even when he was in one corner, it seemed as if he occupied the whole stage.” Film director SP Muthuraman said he could make out that he was “hero material” the moment he set eyes on him. (Rajini had just made his film debut, playing a small role in K Balachander’s Apoorva Raagangal. He didn’t have conventional good looks; he was dark, plump, with a head full of untameable hair.)

Second, Rajinikanth’s name, to borrow a phrase used to describe the mathematical genius of Ramanujan, seems to ‘transcend jealousies’. Part of the reason could be the way he is seen off-screen. He dresses simply, never hides his age, and his jokes are self-deprecating. (“When I told a neighbour Aishwarya is acting in my next film, he asked, ‘Who’s the hero?’”.)

It also has to do with the dedication he puts into every movie, and the respect with which he treats his colleagues. Cho Ramaswamy, who has worked with Rajinikanth, says, “He is very co-operative, particularly with comedy actors like me. We would require somebody to throw a feeding line. He would do that willingly, obligingly and in fact, go about asking if we need anything.” Suresh Krissna, who directed Baasha, says he is a director’s delight.

But more importantly, his image, reputation and influence were built during pre-IPL, pre-internet, pre-satellite TV days when cinema was the prime, and often the only, source of entertainment. A movie rested on the charisma of the star.

That is changing, says Theodore Bhaskaran, who has written books on the history of Tamil cinema and society. Now there are directors who give importance to the content, the story and the screenplay. Audiences have changed too. They don’t see cinema just as entertainment. They want more: “The age of superstars is over,” he says.

Some time in the future, Vijay might end up occupying the slot left by Rajinikanth. But, he will never replace him. No one can!

A 29 year old actor sits right behind the Superstar in the favourite hero category. That is pretty damn significant.

Cedy..thanks for starting that initiative. Let's rock and roll with some positivity ..and post some feel good articles and posts. Here is one interview of ARM when he was filming the Hindi version of Ghajini with Aamir Khan. One great excerpt out of this is as follows :

I met Vijay accidently in a lift at Ramoji Rao Studios. After initial pleasantries he asked me if he could visit the Gajini sets. I was shocked and invited him personally to the sets and introduced him to Aamir. To my surprise, Aamir immediately recognized him and said that he is a fan of Vijay and his dance. He also recollected how he and his wife would be glued to his songs on TV while in Chennai.

There are a couple other things ARM mentioned about his first choice for first movie etc. And this was when he and Vijay didn't even have any discussion of working together.

The link to the above interview http://www.behindwoods.com/features/Interviews/interview-5/director/ar-murgadoss.html

Keep the posts coming friends!! Cheers!

The people's poll always puts Vijay on top and so does the Industry excerpts. You heard Dhananjayan in the Forbes article, here is what Abirmai Ramanathan had to say.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sqsUPLj7fw

I remember seeing this .. it was a proud moment for all Vijay fans...if my memory serves me right, he said this when Vijay was going through that lean phase around 2009-10....imagine the scenario now. He will be nautical miles ahead of his contemporaries.

WHEN ONLINE VIJAY FANS CONDEMNED THEATER OWNERS& BIASED MEDIA AND EXTENDING LOYAL SUPPORT TO VIJAY
http://www.vijayfansclub.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/vijay-fans-600x375.jpg
The recent reaction of theatre owners after the relese of Sura is one of the worst happenings in recent past. Time and situation changes everyone, but really not to this extent. The same theatres owners who once hailed Vijay as a Messiah to them, have all of sudden been projecting him as someone who has ruined their lives with unreal claims, that even God cannot approve.
What realy hurts is their speeches as if he hasnt given any profit to them. Vijay is the one who always wishes that everyone from parking boy to theatre owners to distributors and his producers earn profits from his films. And he managed to achive it number of times which even earned him the Minimum Guarantee hero status.
We have a few questions to these protesting theatre owners.
1.If 5 Vijay movies continously failed as per your claims, on what gut feeling you invested 50 lakhs in his 6th consecutive movie? This seriously lacks any logic. A Good business mind wont commit same mistake for 6 times in a row. They still look at cashing upon his opening power and fans excitement to see collections for first few days. If they say its the trust they had on Vijay it is an escape statement to hide the real source of their losses and shift the blame on Vijay.
2.The 50 lakh MG concept would apply only for theatres in major cities like Chennai, Madurai, Kovai, Trichy, Salem and Nellai. Has the movie been sold for same amount to theatres located in places like Karur, Pollachi, Pazhani etc etc and the other rural areas of TN? We guess the rate is only according to area and projecting it as a TamilNadu wise problem is again a media stunt.
3.What was the Ticket rates for first 2 weeks? Is any theatre following rules implemented by Govt of Tamil nadu? People who saw the movie on 20th day paid a Ticket price of min 100. The first 5 days Ticket prices were 150,200 in many places whereas according to Govt norms it should be 50,75 even for an AC theatre. Few theatres outside Chennai has A/C only in its name. With ticket prices min of 100 till 20th day and reasonable crowd flow as confirmed by those who visit theatres, how could a owner face loss?
4. Just a Small calculation. Lets take a Theatre capacity of around 1000. And a Vijay movie for first 10 days will have minimum 80% Crowd on an average. With theatre ticket prices at a min of 100 and Daily 4 shows, movie sold for 50lakhs. Let keep per Show 800 seats gets filled. Per day 3200 seats(Includes all 4 shows). For 10 days, 10*3200 seats= 32,000*100 ticket cost= 32,00,000.With having 60% average occupancy for next 10 days, with same calculation a theatre would get 24 lakhs back. This itself amounts to 56 lakhs returns roughly with minimum assumed values. Then where comes the claim of money? It looks more like an intentional act to degrade Vijays fame in Industry.
4. There is also a point mentioned by theatre owners that Kamal,Rajini,Manirathnam and T.R. compensated them. Let us know one thing.Did Kamal compensate for Alavadhan or Anbe Sivam loss? He did only for Mumbai express which was his own Production. Did Rajini compensate for Kuslean loss? He did only for Baba which was his Own production. Its ages since Maniratnam or TR worked in a project for another producer. So its clear that everyone had compensated only for their own Production. If Vijay has been asked compensation for Aathi its fair. Claiming loss for other movies which wasnt his own Production is heights of stupidity. If they are really failures, why would someone be willing to invest 50 lakhs on Sura after 5 failures?
5. Even after Sun pics themselves said Vettaikaran is their highest grosser, how can these people call that as a flop? If Vijay movies are been called continuous Failures, then what about most of the heroes who give a hit once in a blue moon and still rated as top heroes on par with Vijay? And calling al movies after Aathi as flops, which includes Pokiri is he most ridiculous thing ever heard recently. And their most unrealistic claim that Sun Pictures cannot be responsible for this highlights their only motive behind all these. How can a distributr selling at a high price cannot be responsible for their loss?!
6. The theatre owners must have forgotten that Vijay is the only hero in current generation who delieverd 16 mega hits and several super hits to reach his 50th movie. The same complaining owners have looted lakhs and lakhs when Vijay delivered series of hits by setting high ticket fares, selling tickets in black on their own and providing poor facilities at high ticket rates.
Vijay is indeed the most profitable hero than any others in current generation and this was also said only by their fellow Theatre owners and also Producers and Distributors. All these media stunt looks clearly like a drama to create a negative image in the minds of people by keeping ahead false claims and provoking statements. Before pleading on basis of humanity they should have some gratitude for the person who has laid them Golden eggs when everyone else were delivering duds. When in future a time comes and Vijay delivers hits, let us see what these humanitarians speak about him and atleast lets see if they have a heart to thank him for their profits!
The fourth estate called Media is a powerful tool in a democratic country. We respect their power to either construct or destruct with the power of their words. But are they doing justice to the articles they write? Definitely not always. Especially almost never when it comes to what they write about Vijay. Those who are their eye candies get hailed every other day and if they are biased about someone, we are sure to see double standards in their articles on them. The hatred or bias which media has been showing oflate towards Vijay is really shocking and this article poses a few questions to them on this:
1. Many websites wrote that Vijay will be banned following the recent uproar about Sura from few theatre owners. Anyone with commonsense knows banning an actor directly lies within powers of NAdigar Sangam or Producers council and not Theatre owners who are empowered to issue red cards to an actors films and not bans. This itself is a clear example of their attitude towards Vijay and what they really expect to happen. We wonder if they can write with same cruelty about any other hero in similar situation.
2.Every now and then we see articles criticising Vijay to the lowest levels of even abusing published in websites and few magazines using unparliamentary language. Arent journalists required to have some amount of professional ethics and maintain some levels of discipline when writing about celebrities?
3.Every Vijay movie is degraded with the tagline of Only for Vijay fans or by giving the lowest possible star rating with all negatives highlighted. Similar type of films from their eye candy actors or those who are influential will come with a totally different tone from same reviewers, and the star rating would be unbelievably high, not worthy of its value. And the review will definitely have a line which says all negatives are overcome by the performance of so and so actor. They can instead term themselves as fan sites of particular actors which would be more justified on their part.
4. When Sun Pictures, the distributors of Vettaikaaran themselves declared it as their biggest collection grosser, these media still try to project it as a flop. When Vijay movies that have been super hits were termed as just average, average movies are termed as flops and washouts by these media. Why cant they maintain the same scale of box office analysis for their eye candy actors or influential actors?
5. Oflate, there has been a new trend to write letters and requisitions for Vijay claiming it as from the point of view of a fan which are nothing but injecting negatives in the form of sugar coated words when his movies are not received well. Why cant there be articles from the same fans point of view when Vijay delivers superhits, and that time, we can see only average and nothing new kind of reports which has no meaning when most fans like a film.
6. Why can the media offer free advice for actors who claim themselves as family entertainers yet act in bedroom and exposing scenes, actors who does one movie every two years and yet everytime comeup with similar story of one song millionaire concepts and many others who commit blunders in the name of movis which neither benefits fans nor the people in business? Why do they have to turn their fake attention to Vijay when he has already planned for the change wanted from him?
7. As for Vijay, we have to notice the first and foremost thing that he has avoided any protest thats against Media in the past as he feels a gratitude that they are ones who strengthed his position to what he is today. Other actors who attend these protests and speak abusive things on the press and media just because they were handed over the mic, as still treated as favourites by media.
8. Vijay is always an easily approachable media friendly hero who has readily agreed for many interviews to even those magazines in the past even when he was hurt by their comments on him and his films. A recent example is his interview to Kumudham inspite of their worst review for Vettaikaaran.
9. If Vijay doing commercial movies is a sin as projected by media, why cant they offer some guidance to actors who have been acting in similar kind of stories for past 18 odd years or those who miserably fail to deliver bankable movies in a consistent manner and doesnt even speak openly to media?
10. The festival editions, special editions of magazines will feature an interview of Vijay. They put up series about him to boost up ther sales. Yet when it comes to writing about him, it is in the most inhuman way which readily buildsup a negative impression in the minds of the readers. And even when their articles are least related to Vijay they use his face on posters to draw attention. Is Vijay a commodity to boost up their sales and then thrown away when they dont need him?
This article is not intended to ask media to support or come up with articles that always shower praises on Vijay. We want to condemn their worst attitude towards Vijay and being unmindful of the fan power he has. Its high time they stop spreading rumors and publish wrtings degrading him and his films. They should try to do justice to their profesion in whatever they do. Least, they need to posses some humanitarian traits and give respect for everyones feelings.
Again written by KSR the founder of OVFC, vijaynet.com etc etc..

Ajay, we know that Vijay has been the cynosure of all eyes long before the social media or tea shows came into the picture.

Did Thalabathy's daughter praise Vijay?

Aiswarya Rajnikanth i remember in one of her first interviews talked about how she was in awe with Vijay's dancing and casual acting. Sorry, i searched for the link and i don't seem to find it. If someone has it, feel free to post.

Karthi Sivakumar after the humongous success of Paruthi Veeran spoke about his fascination for Vijay and his relentless mass pull in an interview to Kumudham or Ananda Vikatan. I read the print version of it and again i don't find an online source.

Jayam Ravi, after his hatrick success, shared how he admired Vijay and came into the industry wanting to be like him. This is well documented.

Vishal had the habit of watching Vijay's movies first day, first show as any other normal fan would love to.

Jeeva also wanted to emulate Vijay when he wished to try his luck at acting.

Suhashini Maniratnam proudly proclaimed that Vijay was the first actor to break into the Rajni-Kamal stronghold and stake his claim to the top spot

Sathyaraj went one step further and compared Vijay’s movies with the legendary MGR’s. His son Sibiraj is a die-hard Vijay fan.

Director AL Vijay confessed how he used to try Vijay’s dressing and glasses when he was in college.

GV Prakash grew up watching Vijay movies.

So much and so forth.

The only difference is most of these accolades came when social media and tea shows never were a big draw.

Vijay’s stronghold in the social media was questioned and mocked in the beginning and slowly now people have realized his force.

Similarly, there will be time in the near future where tea shows will sing to his tunes too.

Cedy.. good post!

Actually, Vijay has been mentioned and praised and admired even on these tea, coffee shows...however, it's just that we haven't made a big deal of it by making "over the top posts" in this forum..which is what Ajay was pointing at I guess.

For eg : Actress Madhoo (Roja fame), Amala Paul, GVP, Vishal etc have made their admiration for Vijay quite evident on Coffee with DD. Same for the that other show hosted by Sangeetha Krish....I remember how actor Shaam went on raving about Vijay during Khushi days and what a great, humble gentleman he is despite being such a huge star..the way he pats you for good work and motivates you etc etc.

Yes..infact Vishnu and Vikrant shared the entire episode of how Vijay called after Chennai won the CCL, and asked to be put on loudspeaker ...so he could speak and wish everyone. After that, Vijay invited everyone home for a big treat to all the players at his place. These kind of things come to light only when told and shared. When Thalaivaa trailer hit 1 million views in just 1 day !!!! :smokesmirk:
1 million already for Vijay's Thalaivaa...
The trailer of Vijay's Thalaivaa has been met with a massive response by fans and the stats on YouTube are mind-boggling. In just over a day since the release of the trailer, it has already garnered 1.045 million hits with more than 14600 likes. That Vijay's birthday also coincided with the trailer's release has just increased its visibility even more.
The trailer is superbly cut and shows that Thalaivaa is a slick commercial entertainer with a message. Vijay looks dashing in two distinct character demarcations and Amala Paul looks pretty. Santhanam's wisecracks might prove to be another big highlight along with G V Prakash's rocking background score.

WHEN HE OPENED 50CR CLUB IN TAMIL CINEMA THROUGH HIS GHILLI
Ghilli can be termed as Vijay's biggest blockbuster till date. The Box Office collections of Ghilli is something phenomenally high. This was the first film in Tamil to gross 50 crores. Ghilli played a vital role in shaping up Vijay as a Mass Hero and many media wrote him as a successor to Superstar Rajinikanth.

AN ALLTIME BLOCKBUSTER GHILLI
Dharani`s new film Gilli is the first biggest hit in the last 10 years!
A.M.Ratnam and director Dharani, with their marketing techniques have made Vijay Gilli an all-time blockbuster. The trade says that the film is the biggest hit in the last 10 years and the collections will cross Padayappa and Saamy. Dharani, the showman of Tamil cinema speaks to Sify.com.
You have done the impossible, a hat trick of hits in Dhill, Dhool and now Gilli.
(Smiles) When I predicted that Gilli would be a bigger hit than my earlier films nobody believed me. And now it is extremely satisfying. I cannot ask for more.
Did you make changes in the script of the Telugu original Okkadu?
Yes. It was a gamble that paid off. I made Gilli more racy than the original with small changes in the climax. When Bhagayaraj saw the film he congratulated and told me: If Gilli had flopped everyone would have blamed you for making the changes. But you have risen to the challenge. This was indeed a pat on my back. (Read review: `Gilli17 is entertaining)
Tell us something about the Gilli wave in Tamilnadu?
Why Tamilnadu alone, at the Wembley theatre in London with temperature below 10 degree about 500 to 600 Tamilians had to go back due to non-availability of tickets! In Columbo too the film took a great opening and is the best in the last five years! In Kerala the film is doing better than any mainstream Malayalam film. And In Chennai Udayam complex Gilli was screened in all the four screens in the opening weekend. At Tirunelveli, the theatre had to show five shows due to the unprecedented crowds.Gilli has broken MGR Adimapen record of more number of people seeing it in the first week.(Read: `Gilli` takes a great opening)
So what would be the profit?
Sorry, I cant tell you the figures as producer Ratnam will be in trouble. Suffice to sayGilliis the biggest hit in the last 10 years!
So will it break Padayapa collections of Rs 27 Crore in Tamilnadu?
No comments (Laughs loudly). Remember that IT people are reading Sify.com!
Will the film withstand the Arul attack this week at the box-office?
The Gilli gale is unstoppable as it is the king at the box-office.

``Kathalukku Mariathai'' - 26th Dec., 1997.

The viewers will certainly go into raptures the way director Fazil has
devised and handled the climax in a simple love tale of a Hindu boy with a
Christian girl in Murugan Cine Arts' ``Kathalukku Mariathai,'' just as he
has showed his mettle in the other portions of this clean film. The director
works neatly on the `love at first sight' principle, the rough stuff brought
about by the brothers of the girl, all natural reaction, being unavoidable.
``Baby'' Shalini has blossomed into a beautiful maiden, the long absence
from the silver screen not in anyway affecting her performance. The hero,
Vijay brings to surface the soft nature of the love in all its glory. Gokul
Krishna's dialogue embellish the developments. Added to these fine
aspects are the melodious numbers Ilayaraja has tuned in ``Ennai Thalatta
Varuvala'' (two versions, one by Hariharan and Bhavatharani and the other
by the maestro himself) and ``Ananda Kuyilin Paattu'' (Chitra).

Jeeva (Vijay) meets Mini (Shalini) in a book shop and their eyes meet
leading to sparks of love in their hearts. Mini has a loving mother
(K.P.S.Lalitha) and three brothers, James (Radha Ravi), Thomas (Vijai of
`Thalaivaasal') and Stephen (newcomer Shaji Khan) and she is the apple
of their eye. Mini is hesitant to reciprocate her love for Jeeva who steadily
makes an inroad into her heart, the love affair incensing her family members
who give him a thrashing each time he meets her. Jeeva's parents are under
the impression that their son is pursuing his MBA studies until his father
receives a SOS from Jeeva, injured in one such beatings. His father
Chandrasekhar (Sivakumar) is stunned by the developments and Jeeva's
mother (Srividya) is also shocked. Jeeva refuses to part company with
Mini when his father arrives with his henchmen to take him back. The
Christian family wants Jeeva dead. The developments till this juncture might
have found expression in earlier movies but these events have been treated
with a mature head along with some comic element by Charly and Dhamu,
as the friends of the hero.

Realising that the lovers' existence is in danger, Kesavan (Charly) suggests
that they find refuge in his father's (Manivannan's) fishermen hamlet and the
couple elope followed by the brothers. Manivannan refuses to give them
away and the brothers swear bloodshed. A registrar wedding is quickly
arranged and on the eve of the wedding, the lovers learn of the unlimited
love, affection and care their respective family members have for them and
decide not to hurt their sentiments. They agree to part company. The
fisherfolk leader is shocked first at their decision, and later understands
their feelings and sends them back safely, an appreciable twist in the
movie.

The best segment of the movie follows next. The elated and much relieved
elders hastily arrange the weddings of their offsprings when the respective
mothers learn how lonesome the two lovers are. Jeeva's mother using the
excuse of returning the chain belonging to Mini, goes to Mini's house with
her husband, son and his two friends and James receives them warmly.
Instead of sparks flying here the director brings into play the human
sentiments, the mothers leading the show, and the camera of Anand Kuttan
sharply catching the artistes at their best. The meagre amount of dialogue
merges wonderfully with those enacting them, an interesting climax.

Serious looking Shalini enacts the tender role of a confused sweetheart
caught between the love of her elders and that of the man who has stolen
her heart without blemish. Vijay shows controlled aggression in his fights as
the rivals happen to be the brothers of his sweetheart and dances with
relish. His voice modulations heightens his portrayal. Sivakumar, Srividya
and Lalitha make fine contributions to the drama along with the three
brothers, Radharavi, Vijai and Shaji Khan.

Priyamudan

Almost all reputed heroes of Tamil movies at some stage of their career, have played the anti-hero role. The latest to join the list is Vijay, son of director S.A. Chandrasekharan, and the film is Lakshmi Movie Makers'``Priyamudan''. Vijay is riding the crest of success in recent years. To Vijay, this is a test by fire and he has come out unscathed, the tension involved in it being discernible.

The story is on the lines of popular movies of Shah Rukh Khan and the Deol brothers. The debutant director, Vincent Selva, who is also seen in a small, silent role at the airport reveals a good, imaginative mind in the song sequences backed by the colourful art work of S.A.C. Ramki. He brings out the possessivenature of the affluent boy with commendable situations. The director should have fashioned more scenes to show the brutish kind of deep love the herohad developed instead of dwelling on the so-called comedy between the Iyercouple (Manivanan and Sunitha) which ends abruptly. The CBI taking over thedeath of the heroine's father (Jai Ganesh, is an affluent businessman andis in no way connected with politics or any other nefarious deals) is strange. So also the comical assistants (S. A. Chandrasekharan and T. P. Gajendran),of the investigating officer (Nasser).

The dust, the heat and the colourful milieu of Rajasthan have been gloriouslycanned by Vijay Milton. Deva and his brothers have adopted popular Hinditunes and the theme song of an English movie which had bagged many Oscars. The string instruments of Rajasthan also come to the fore in the backgroundscore and is enjoyable.

Vasanth (Vijay), Vasanth Kumar (newcomer Sujith Sagar), Gaffar (S. N. Surender)and Ravi (Azhagu) are thick friends, the first named being the son of a richman and possessive by nature. Vasanth uses his money and influence to geta singing engagement for Vasanth Kumar and they go to Rajasthan where thecompetitions are scheduled. There the rich boy spots Priya (Kausalya) andinstantly falls in love though his efforts to contact her prove to be nearmisses. When he finally does manage to meet her, the girl is involved in an accident with the car in which the other friends are going to the competition venue. They admit her in a hospital and Vasanth Kumar offers his blood tosave her. The dejected band return to Chennai and Vasanth soon receives acall from Priya informing him that she is coming to Chennai. She asks VasanthKumar to meet her at the station. By turn of events, Vasanth goes to thestation instead of his friend. When he spots Priya, she turns out to be theone who had won his heart. He quietly tells her that he is Vasanth Kumar, the starting point of all trouble, heartburns, angry acts that result indeaths, etc. the possessive nature of Vasanth blinding his senses.

Vijay performs some lively dance numbers, including a solo one, and indulgesin vigorous fight (a minor back injury flared up during this shooting, forcinghim to take rest for a couple of weeks), all in his usual style. He has madesincere efforts to give shape to the negative character and asserts himselfin the climax. He is at his best in the scene where he pleads his case withJai Ganesh, forcing him to a rash act. Kausalya just fills the bill, whileSujit Sagar makes a neat essay. Others in the cast include Madan Bob, Deepikaand Sunitha.

One of my favourite movies of Vijay - Badri

.................................................. ..........

http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/2001/04/27/stories/09270223.htm

VIJAY HAS taken incredible risks in the action scenes in Oscar Films' ``Badri'' - risks so real that at times they make the viewer anxious about the actor's safety. When the young hero is willing to take such incalculable efforts, is it not imperative that he checked out whether the screenplay was strong enough and worthwhile?

All the same, ``Badri'' is a film that clearly establishes a different dimension to the lover boy image of Vijay. He is the new macho man, the new action hero who turns a kickboxer in Jean Claude Van Damme style.

Badri and his friends are a group of vagabonds, who go around town with the sole aim of having fun and little else. The advice of elders, the reprimand from the college authorities and insults from people around them, hardly affect the group that is notorious for its irresponsible ways. Janu (Bhoomika) is a docile neighbour and good friend of Badri. She is secretly in love with him, but predictably Badri is unaware of it. He falls in love with the hep, selfish and money-minded Mamathi (Monal). She reciprocates thinking he is rich but gives him the cold-shoulder when she comes to know that he is not. Vetri (Riyaz Khan), Badri's elder brother, is the one on whom the father pins all his hope. He wants his elder son to become a champion in kickboxing, but it is Badri who eventually succeeds.

The story may not be completely original, but it is one that has the necessary ingredients of an interesting film. The dialogue is effective for the most part. It is the vital screenplay that lacks crispness. The boy knows that Mamathi's love is based on his financial status and still pursues the girl. When she accuses him of being a cheat, he shouts at her and goes on in an expositive vein about what true love is! A confusing and illogical line of thought.

This is Monal's second film and it is time she begins to work on her expressions.

Bhoomika as the quiet and helpful Janu shows class and histrionics of an appreciable quality. A dignified portrayal by the debutante.

But both the heroines seem to be mouthing the dialogue in an alien tongue in most of the scenes. (except in the close-up shots). Even if their voices are dubbed, heroines should at least make an attempt to deliver the dialogue in the language. Lip sync is vital to make their enactment effective and natural.

Music is by Ramana Gokula. ``Angel Vandhalae'' has a catchy tune but stays in your mind more for the elegant dance steps.

The screenplay and direction are by P.A. Arun Prasad.

``Badri'' clearly reveals the diligence and sincerity of Vijay. But would these alone make a film wholesome?

Vijay is a fantastic draw. The kind of money that he makes, nobody else does. Why can’t he do a film with Selvaraghavan or with me, on our terms? We’ve proved ourselves, you know? Why can’t he work with a good team? It’s only for the benefit of good cinema – and the producers and the distributors are going to end up happy.

POKKIRI Pongal!
Chennai box-office - (Jan 12-16 )!!!!
This week, it is a five day Pongal special Chennai box-office. It was Pokkiri Pongal all the way. The Vijay starrer took an amazing 97 percent opening from five city theatres in three days and is clearly the number one. The masses are loving it and they are coming back to see it again as Devi and all other theatres screening the film has kept ticket rates at Rs 40 and Rs 30!
Mani Ratnam'sGuru(Hindi) had a head start over the Tamil films as it was released two days before, is doing roaring business and is at a steady 90 percent. After two days at the Sathyam big screen, it was shifted to a smaller screen to accommodate AjitsAalwar, but still managed to be at number two due to steady collections. If 2006 ticket rates had prevailed,Guru, would have been in the number one position!
At number three isAalwarwhich is creating shock waves in the trade. The famous Ajit opening was missing after day-one as the fans were hugely disappointed by the film. Added to that, the film opened in big screens like Sathyam, Sangam,Bharat, Kamala all with 1000 plus seating capacity, which added to its woes.
In the fourth position is Vishal's Thamarabharani, which carries mixed reports and could not take an opening due to the biggies. It may pick up if the opposition weakens.
Dhanush's Thiruvilayadil Aarambham is still going steady and is in the fifth position.

Chennai box-office - (Jan 19-21 )
"Pokkiri" rocks at the Chennai box-office! It has created a record 28 shows (Jan 14-20) continuously houseful at Devi (1170 seats) where tickets are priced (Rs 30 & Rs 40) less than some theatres in NSC area!Guru continues its stranglehold and is the second position. There is a marginal improvement in the collection of Thamarabharani which has moved up to the third place.Thiruvilayadal Arambham is steady at fourth place while Aalwar has slipped to fifth position. http://www.sify.com/movies/chennai-box-office-jan-19-21-news-boxoffice-kkfvfDbiejfsi.html

POKKIRI in its third weekend
Chennai box-office - (Jan 26-28 ): Sify.com
Pokkiri rules and is the clear number one by a mile! Its hold over the CBO is amazing. In its third weekend, the film is still drawing 95 percent! At number two this week is the multi starrer Salaam-E-Ishq, which opened in four huge screens with combined capacity of over 4500 and by day two started dropping. In comparison Mani Ratnam's Guru is still the hottest show in town, and is steady at 85 to 90 percent during this weekend.
Dhanush's Thiruvilayadal Aarambham continues to rock, and has become a favourite with the family audience. Though GK films have boosted the publicity of Thamarabharani, it has not reflected in the collections and is at number five.

At the third position isPori, which opened in big screens and could not hold on. At number four is Dhanush's Thiruvilayadal Aarambham which has become a favourite with the family audience.Thamarabharani, manages to keep itself afloat at number five. http://www.sify.com/movies/chennai-box-office-feb-2-to-4-news-boxoffice-kkfveWbfjaasi.html

Pokkiri looks unbeatable as it continues to lord over the box-office fifth week in a row! The trade was shocked when the highly hyped Deepavali turned out to be a damp squib at the box office. It opened in too many screens and started dropping from day two as the word- of- mouth was bad, and is at the number two position.
And Mani Ratnam's Guru and its Hindi version is the number three and still drawing record crowds. At number four is Dhanush's Thiruvilayadal Aarambham which has become a favourite with the family audience.Thamarabharani, manages to keep itself afloat at number five.

Headlines Today is India's first exclusive English News Channel started in 2003, that gets straight to the point and has been created to match the speed and lifestyle of the big city. The stories are slick and short. Its sister channel Aaj Tak is India's Number 1 News channel is to deliver news with unparalled passion, accuracy and speed. Headlines Today is the sharp news channel for sharp people.
This is the first time that a Tamil actor is being interviewed by this channel.Yes, you heard it right. Our very own 'Ilayathalapathy' Vijay gave an interview to Headlines Today on Feb 5th, 2007. Headlines Today organzied a special interview with Vijay in Taj Connemara. Colonially elegant and infused with design touches hinting to its imperial past, the Taj Connemara, is Chennai’s only heritage hotel.
No other actor has this rare opportunity of being interviewed at a place of his liking by this channel. Even Bollywood's biggest Superstar Amitabh Bachchan had to go to their studio to give an interview to this highly prestigious channel.
Vijay was interviewed by 'Headlines Today' on Feb 5th today. Vijay looked very fresh and very enthusiastic. Vijay interacted very well with the interview and media persons. All were very happy about the interview that Vijay gave. The person who interviewed Vijay, was very happy with Vijay for the way he spoke to her. She felt that Vijay was more outspoken than what she had heard about him to be.
She shot out the questions and Vijay answered them in a calm and refreshing manner. After the interview was over, Headlines Today thanked Vijay for giving a very exclusive interview to their channel. They also asked Vijay to give regular interviews to their channel
Thereby, we got to see the real power of our 'Ilayathalapathy Vijay'. It was one of the most glorious moments for Vijay's fans to cherish forever, and would surely have been a really satisfying moment for Vijay himself to have been interviewed by such a big channel.

Vijay’s birthday message to his fans
We are just three days away to have a glimpse at the digital motion poster of Vijay’s upcoming film Kaththi directed by AR Murugadoss. It will be unveiled for Vijay’s birthday on June 22. In an interview to a Tamil daily, when asked about what birthday message he would like to send his fans, Ilayathalapathy spoke in length.
Greetings to the fans who love me. I usually never celebrate my birthdays personally. Instead, I have been utilizing the day to help economically backward people. You have also gone a level higher and been serving the poor and needy people by organizing blood donation, organ donation camps, providing laptops for school children etc. All these activities give me immense pleasure and I feel really proud of my fans. I wish your social services should grow manifold in near future. You need to economically uplift yourselves to continue doing the same. If you are honest, dedicated and put in hard work, you are bound to taste success soon irrespective of what field you are in. Every victory of yours is like a victory to me. Work hard, reach great places and make wonders. This should be the best gift you could ever give me on my birthday. http://www.onlykollywood.com/vijay-birthday-message-fans-makkal-iyakkam/

Looks like we have ruffled a few sagging feathers :)

Any ways, back to Vijay. Kumudham is not the first and would not be the last to proclaim the dominance of Vijay. Infact, the difference this time around is a little surprising. An all round voting across all age groups would have been even more emphatic.

Can someone post Google's post on the most searched tamil actor graph for the last decade. That is another sweet, sweet stat :)

Yes Cedy... there are so many such media sites and surveys. Pre release buzz of Vijay movies in trade circles is a huge indication of his growth and credibility with all distributor and theatre owner groups. His movies now get sold just during or post announcement..with tv channels competing to buy the rights. Anyway..all this has been proved time and again. Even if he doesn't give hits ..theaters will still go for his next movie. A great example is that Abirami owner statement in 2009 when he was going through a lean patch.

Top 5 Most Searched South Actors on Google in 2014 (January & February).
1. Vijay (Tamilnadu, Kerala, Malaysia): Tamil people see him as the next No.1 who could take the place of Superstar Rajinikanth. Vijay is just one of the mass hero in Kollywood until 2012. Good Success Rate and Films like Nanban (3 Idiots Tamil remake) and Thuppakki has helped him reach out family and multiplex audience. He enjoys a great following (only next to Rajini) now. He was mostly in news recently for his Sankranthi release 'Jilla'. http://www.tollywoodjunction.in/2014/03/top-5-most-searched-mans-from-south.html

And on the Kumudham polls, it was being conducted across the state for over 4 months and every week they were giving an update on it. Not that it was published all of a sudden like Ananda Vikatan article. The ballot boxes were sent across the districts and also postal votes were used. பூனை கண்ணை மூடிக்கிட்டா....

Very true Ajay. Attaching some proof of the same. It's not like a few people like you and me discussed here and made some home made posts here to put Vijay on top. This was a proper diligent process that was followed for months. As you said, the updates were provided regularly.

Folks, here we go :) Kumudham tables every where huh......

The latest kumudham table is ripped straight from here and offcourse, kumudham logo has been attached along with maane, thene and ponmane :)

http://toptamilfilms.blogspot.in/2007_06_01_archive.html

The numbers have been updated from this anonymous blog and arranged in the form of a table and you don't need to spend much time to understand the sinister intentions of this unofficial blog.

But again, kumudham logo, maane, thene and ponmany makes it reliable.

Cedy...why are movies like Lingaa...Kaththi...Vishwaroopam 2 not in the list...

Okay guys...I guess we have had enough fun now. Just a few positive posts about Vijay without offensive remarks towards anyone and this is what happens. There is no cure for insecurity.

Let's get back to our initiative. Let's continue the posts for Vijay...3 more days for THE day....Kaththi first look and theme. Cannot wait.
