I would like to introduce myself as - S. SELVA KUMAR, A staunch MGR Devotee and an Admirer of his movies, since 1968 when I was only 12 years of age.

Because of him, I have come up in my life and attained the current status of Professor, in the Society. As he was considered as ‘VATHIYIAAR’, the interest towards Teaching had arisen within me, to guide the students in a right direction, resulted in leaving my Public Sector undertaking job, after 26 years of valuable service.

His stressing the need for Righteousness, Justice, and Affection towards Parents, Respect to the Elders and to do Good things for the development of Community, Rendering possible assistance to others, through his films really attracted me like Magnet.

I consider him as God in view of his laudable hard efforts made for the upliftment of down-trodden people, when he was film personality and also a charismatic Chief Minister. Not only the People of Tamil Nadu but the Tamilians wherever live in the World, always remember him and express their gratitude for his implementation of people oriented Schemes that derived benefits for the needy. He is the one, incomparable with other Leaders by virtue of his protecting the interest of Tamilians and Tamil Nadu.

I request the Thread users to post the comments related to our Ponmanachemmal MGR only. I also request that posting the Comments, should not in any way hurt the feelings of others, as we are all aware that our M.G.R. is an incomparable human being with anybody else. That is why people still remember him even after his death of 25 years elapsed. To go in deep, many worship him as God.

I seek the co-operation and support from all concerned and welcome the comments.

Great Work Professor Selvakumar Sir. I will try to provide as much information I hold to this thread.

Sathi Leelavathi the first movie that our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar had appeared. First he was chosen for the role of a detective the character comes along with the whole movie. But unfortunately he was given Inspector Rangaiah Naidu. As per the information our MGR role is very small and that his scenes lasted not more than 6 minutes.

Sathi Leelavathi (lit. Leelavathi the wife) was based on a Tamil play named Pathi Bhakthi (lit. Devotion to the Husband) written by A. Krishnaswami Pavalar and starring K. P. Kesavan. It was staged by the Madurai Original Boys Company. M. Kandasamy Mudaliar wanted to make a film based on the play. Production started but soon stalled due to differences and K. P. Kesavan canceled his contract. Mudaliar walked out of the production and started a new film titled Sathi leelavathi based on a novel written by S. S. Vasan and serialized in Ananda Vikatan. Mudaliar's son M. K. Radha was cast as hero and an unknown (then) 19 year old M. G. Ramachandran was cast as Police Inspector Rangayya Naidu. The film was produced by Marudachalam Chettiar of Coimbatore. Chettiar wanted Manik Lal Tandon to direct the movie and went to Calcutta to hire him. Tandon who was busy directing Nandanar, introduced Chettiar to Dungan and recommended Dungan be given the chance instead. Dungan was hired as director and the film was made. Some scenes were shot in location at Ceylon. The completed film was 18,000 feet in length.

Plot

Sathi Leelavathi dealt with the evils of alcoholism and promoted prohibition. It also depicted the plight of plantation workers in Ceylon. It is the story of a young man who becomes an alcoholic and runs away to Ceylon and the difficulties he faces there.

The movie was released on 23rd March 1936.

As I was searching the net for any other information on Sathi Leelavathi, I found that in all MGR photo used for this movie information. If our Leader would have been like others, the movie should have been disappeared along with other movies of that time.

முதல் பதிவாக பொன்மனச்செம்மலின் முதல் படம் பற்றிய கருத்துக்களுடன் திரி தொடங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் ரங்கய்ய நாயுடு என்ற சிறிய கதாபாத்திரத்தில் மக்கள்திலகம் இதில் நடித்துள்ளார். தென்றல் என்ற பத்திரிக்கையில் வெளியிடப்பட்ட கட்டுரையில் பாட்டுப்புத்தகத்தில் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் அவர்களின் பெயர் 12வதாக இடம் பெற்றிருப்பதாக படித்த நினைவு உள்ளது. மக்கள் திலகம் இப்படம் பற்றிய தனது கருத்துரையில் அவர் ஏற்றுக் கொண்ட இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் கதாபாத்திரம் பற்றிக் குறிப்பிடுகையில் என்னால் அந்த பாத்திரத்துக்கோ அந்தப் பத்திரத்தால் எனக்கோ பெருமை சேர்க்கும் அளவுக்கு இல்லை எனக்குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார். ஆயினும் பொன்மனச்செம்மலின் முதல்படம் என்ற அளவில் ஒவ்வொரு ரசிகனின் மனத்திலும் இப்படம் நீங்காத இடம் பெற்றிருக்கிறது. இருப்பினும் இப்படத்தின் காட்சிகளை முழுமையாகக் காணக்கிடைக்காத சூழல் உள்ளது. ஏற்கனவே நான் குறிப்பிட்டது போல ஏக்நாத் வீடியோ நிறுவனம் வெளியிட்ட ஒரு விசிஆர் காசட்டிலும் ஜனனி நிறுவனம் வெளியிட்ட வீடியோ மேகசீனிலும் இப்படத்தில் மக்கள்திலகம் அவர்கள் பங்கு பெற்ற காட்சிகள் மட்டும் வெளிவந்தன. அவையும் தற்போது கிடைக்கவில்லை.
கொடுமையான வறுமைச் சூழலில் இப்படத்தில் நடிக்கும் வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்ததாகவும், இதனைத் தொடர்ந்து பல படங்களில் இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் வேடம் புனைந்து நடிக்கக்கூடிய வாய்ப்பு வந்ததாகவும் , தொடர்ந்து இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் வேடமே நிலைத்துவிடக்கூடும் என்ற எண்ணத்தில் அவ்வாய்ப்புகளை மறுத்து விட்டதாகவும் மக்கள் திலகம் அவர்கள் பல சந்தர்ப்பங்களில் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார். அந்த நேரத்தில் வயிற்றைக் கழுவ அந்த வாய்ப்பினைப் பயன்படுத்திக் கொண்டிருக்கலாமோ என்ற எண்ணம் அதன் பின்னரும் பல சமயங்களில் தோன்றியதாகவும் அந்த எண்ணங்களை துடைத்தெறிந்து விட்டு வைராக்கியமாக இருந்ததாகவும் அவர் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.
இந்தப் படத்தில் முதலில் நீதிபதி வேடத்தில் நடிக்க எம்.ஜி.சக்கரபாணி அவர்கள் ஒப்பந்தம் செய்யப்பட்டார். பின்னர் அவருக்குப் பதிலாக பட முதலாளியின் நண்பர் ஒருவர் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டதால் இப்படத்தில் எம்.ஜி.சி அவர்கள் நடிக்கவில்லை. இந்தப் படம் என்.எஸ்கிருஷ்ணன், டி.எஸ்.பாலைய்யா ஆகியோருக்கும் முதல் படம்.
இதற்கு அடுத்த படமான இரு சகோதரர்கள் படத்தில் தான் எம்.ஜி.ஆரும் அவரது தமையனார் எம்.ஜி.சக்கரபாணி அவர்களும் இணைந்து நடித்தார்கள். எம்.ஜி.சக்கரபாணி அவர்களுக்கு இது தான் முதல் படம் . மற்றொரு விநோதமான செய்தி என்னவென்றால் இதில் எம்.ஜி.சி அவர்களுக்கு இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் வேடம். மக்கள் திலகத்திற்கோ வில்லன்களில் ஒருவர் வேடம். இருபடங்களையும் எல்லிஸ் ஆர். டங்கன் அவர்களே இயக்கினார்.

சதிலீலாவதி எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்குத்தான் முதல் படம் என்றில்லை. படத்தில் வில்லனாக நடித்த டி.எஸ்.பாலையா, கலைவாணர் என்.எஸ்.கிருஷ்ணனுக்கும் முதல் படம். அமெரிக்கரான எல்லீஸ் ஆர்.டங்கன் தமிழ் படங்களை இயக்க ஆரம்பித்ததும் இதன் மூலம் தான். இயக்குநர் (கிருஷ்ணன்) பஞ்சுவுக்கும் இது முதல் படம்.ஜெமினி அதிபர் எஸ்.எஸ். வாசனின் சினிமா உலகப் பிரவேசம் இதில்தான் ஆரம்பமானது. அவர் ஆனந்த விகடன் இதழில் எழுதிய சதிலீலாவதி தொடர் நாவல்தான் படமாகியது. பெரும் வெற்றி பெற்ற சதிலீலாவதி மதுவின் மூலம் ஏற்படும் தீமையால் ஒரு பெரிய குடும்பமே நாசமாயிற்று என்பதை கதையின் மூலக் கருத்தாக வைத்து எடுக்கப்பட்ட படம். படம் பார்த்துவிட்டு ஏராளமான ரசிகர்கள் மதுவுக்கு அடிமையாகியிருந்த நாங்கள் இப்படம் பார்த்துவிட்டு திருந்திவிட்டோம் என்று எழுதியிருந்தார்களாம். எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்கு இதில் போலீஸ் இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் வேடம். சிறிய வேடம்தான்.

I have the opportunity to see the song book in Xerox, Thangavel the Publisher of Olikirathu Urimaikural magazine had with him. He told that this song book will be used in the first part of our MGR documentary. Somebody having the song book of this movie please upload.

With the song book he also showed the Telegraph sent by Theater owner to the distributor that the movie is running successfully and wanted to extend for another two weeks. Theater name and other I have forgotten.

Sathi Leelavathi (1936) release date is 28 Mar, 1936

The heroine, Susheela Devi, was an attractive young woman and a good dancer who did some of the earliest cabaret sequences in the 1930s. She did the exciting dance in Ellis R.Dungan's classic Sathi Leelavathi' (1936) which introduced several new talents to cinema such as S.S. Vasan, M.K. Radha, N.S. Krishnan, T. S. Balaiah, and last but not the least, M.G. Ramachandran.

Leafing through the collection, you spot Sathi Leelavathi, produced by the Coimbatore-based Manorama Films in 1936. Based on S.S.Vasan’s novel, MGR made his debut as Inspector Rangaiah Naidu, in the film. The booklet also carries a congratulatory note by P. Sambandam, one of the prominent names in films from Chennai. It also has a copy of a telegram sent by Murugappa Chettiar from Colombo to Manorama Films, in which he writes: “Sathi Leelavathi having splendid reception. Great popular appeal. Expecting two more glorious weeks.”

It's been a while since I bumped into film historian Randor Guy. When we met the other day, he, as usual, had a tidbit for me. Did I know, he asked me, that it was 75 years ago that M.G. Ramachandran first made his film debut? I didn't, but now I know. It was in a bit part, as a police inspector escorting an accused, that MGR took his first film steps in Sathi Leelavati. Wearing a service bush coat and shorts with a laced turban and a baton, the booted and belted MGR might have looked the part, but it did not win him any recognition. It was to be a little over 10 years later, after a series of minor roles, that he got his chance to play a hero. That was in the 1947 film Rajakumari — and with it he was on his way to stardom.

Sathi Leelavathi, released in 1936, is a film to be remembered for many other reasons as well. It was American Ellis R. Dungan's first film in India as a director — and was to take him to great heights in Tamil cinema. M.K. Radha, then a popular stage actor, comedian N.S. Krishnan and character actor T.S. Balaiah all made their film debuts in this adaptation of Mrs. Henry Woods Danesbury House, yet another of her melodramatic tear-jerkers. The adaptation had been written as a Tamil novel by S.S. Vasan, and when he sold the movie rights to the makers of Sathi Leelavathi, it was his first brush with the film industry. And when Dungan introduced cabaret in the film, it was yet another first.

With Dungan introducing several other cine-techniques new to the Tamil Cinema of the 1930s, Sathi Leelavathi was a trailblazer whose path later Tamil films were to follow.

Story View

A family tale of two brothers with wives cast in different moulds, onedocile and subservient and the other greedy and scandal mongering.The younger brother (Kesavan) is well versed in music and other artsgoes to Madras to earn money to� keep the family floating and the wolfaway from its thin doors.� Thanks to a Good Samaritan he gets a breakand makes a name as a stage artiste.� The money he sends for theupkeep of the family is received by the troublesome sister-in-law whoforges his wife's signature.� After many twists and turns wisdom dawnson the troublesome sister-in-law and her wayward husband and thanks tothe goodness of the actor brother and his good wife the family isunited once more, proving the father's dying words, "a split familynever prospers"…

"Iru Sahodarargal" (also known as "Two Brothers") was written by notedTamil scholar poet, writer and also filmmaker S. D. S. Yogi and wasdirected by the celebrated American Tamil filmmaker Ellis R. Dungan,his second film which came out after his successful debut in "SathiLeelavathi" (1936). The film produced by the noted Coimbatore-basedproducer of that decade Parameswaran Chettiar, was shot in Bombay at Saroj Movietone Studios.
Kesavan, the hero and the younger brother was one of the leadingactors of the 1930s. An import from theatre he was for a short periodvery popular with many hits to his credit like "Bambai Mail" "PunjabKesari" and others. He also sang well. Not many are aware that hewas the role model of M. G. Ramachandran.A Rationalist during aperiod when such persons were rare he refused to act in godly roleswhich ultimately led to the decline of his career.MGR too followinghim during his early days was reluctant to do such roles. Today K. P.Kesavan is hardly remembered.� Ramachandran and Chakrapani acted in minor roles and were credited with only their initial G, and thus MGRwas G. Ramachandran repeating the role of the policeman while M.G.Chakrapani played the inspector, the role MGR played in "SathiLeelavathi".

To play the role of 'Kuppi Paati' Dungan insisted on casting a 70-yearold woman Alamelu Ammal to lend realism to the role!
Surprisingly the theme and storyline found their way many years laterin the Hindi movie star and producer-director Bhagwan's box officebonanza "Albela".
When this writer drew the attention of the similarity to his friendEllis R. Dungan, he recalled that Bhagwan, not yet famous in 1930s wasa regular visitor to the sets at the Bombay studio and also helped inmany ways with both of them traveling often by tram. "Perhaps thestoryline got stuck in his mind and he used it later, you know,Randor, many do it in movies," Dungan remarked smiling.
Music was provided by Anantharaman and Gopalaswami (now forgotten)with lyrics by S. D. S. Yogi.
"Iru Sahodarargal" fared fairly well at the box office and the careergraph of Ellis R. Dungan began to show the promised upward swing.
The art director S. K. Murthy also designed a rare occurrence, thesong book of the movie in an entirely different fashion whichattracted much attention in those days .(This writer has the only copyof it in his modest archive.)
