Thanks for the clip :) BTW I remember watching a Ramarajan movie (Villupaattukaaran?) long back in which Raaja appears in his studio and talks in length with RR and his team of Folk musicians. Which one is it?
80's was such a godlen period that Raaja was a superstar and every director wanted his image or scenes included in the movie. manirathnam, balachander were also no exception :)

'ninnu choosina' - from Chinnabbayi - sweet and the melodic portion sung by SPB in the antara/stanzas is haunting!

'mogali poove' from Keechu rallu - awesome bass line!

'banti chamanti' - vintage IR twists and turns in the tune!

'malli malli idhi rani' - classic!

In film "Karagaatakkaran" , have u IR fans noticed that in title song "paattaale buddhi sonnaar" , they show the key instrumentalists in IR's troupe like violin Narasimhan and others. Who is the bearded guy whom IR is talking to?

Raajangham program in Aahaa FM going great these days...

the otherday some one named Bala, a veena musician hinted some great veena based songs, followed by its relay !! One such number was a great fusion from the film Raja Paarvai, which had some fantastic veena+violin pieces. i will appreciate if i get this from someone. There was also mention abt a classical song from film Manjal Nila sung by KJ & sasirekha...any idea where can i get this.

Right now, interview with Sivamani is on as part of pongal special, njoymadi...

however, except "naina bole naina", the other songs sound very southy, and its hard to imagine how a northy audience would appreciate that. But "naina bole naina" more than makes up for the rest - what an orchestration! It could be one of the best hindi songs in the last few decades..

I was having a very serious arguement with a friend of mine few months back. He sounded the same as you had said. I was reverting back saying, its neither south nor north Raaja's music have only one genre 'Ilaiyaraaja'!. its us who have listened to his songs so much, tend to think of his musical patterns belonging to South but his music is universal :)
