When I am down with sickness or something, I usually find that I can focus very well on things that hold my passion - writing for instance - usually, the output is better when I am sick than otherwise(Ofcourse, that may be just tweedledum and tweedledee level difference - adhu vEra vishayam :-) )
I theorise this as "Quality of an artist's output is invariably linked to the intensity of his experience.". Illness being an intense experience, I wonder if it kind of focusses the mind on the task at hand, and enhances the quality in the process?
