Becket starring Richard Burton and Peter O' Toole, when remade in Hindi as Namak Haraam (Salt Infidelity) had in the respective characters played by Rajesh Khanna and Amithab Bachchan with a slightly deviated story line suiting to Indian culture and atmosphere. The story was spun as the tussle between a mill owner and his trusted friend who mingles with the employees as a labour leader under a gentleman agreement between the owner and his friend. But perceiving the perils of employees under the crunch of mill management and the arrogance of employers the friend changes his mind and mingles as part and parcel of the working community becoming immune to the pressures from his owner friend.By sabotage the hero succumbs to an accident created...and owner friend submerges into the nostalgia of their friendship...tha movies' starting point with this flash back!
GG's close friend in his starting career of the tinsel world was the then affluent Tamil film Producer K.Baalaajee who made his maiden film production with GG in the lead role in Annaavin Aasai a mediocre success film. The Baalaajee went on a record breaking synergy with Nadigar Thilagam Sivaji Ganesan minting money with over a dozen of films under his Sujatha Cine Arts banner! However, to Balajees's mind it clicked that he had to invite GG to play the lead role already played with aplomb by Richard Burton in English and Rajesh Khanna in Hindi. Quite opposite to the gentle breeze approach by Burton it was Peter o' Toole who stole the show by his vibrant acting with cannonball dialogue delivery which was again anchored deeply in the memories of cinegoers by the splendid performance of the then upcoming star Amitabh Bachchan with equal screen space sharing in accordance with the plot and script.
When the balls rolled onto the court of Tamil remake NT was magnanimous enough to take up the characterization of the employer friend happily to get back into association with his long time real and reel friend GG as a token of gratitude! However, there was a feel among the audience that both NT and GG were visibly ageing and the roles should have been played by the then upcoming young stars like Kamal and Rajini.
But everyone's delight both NT and GG proved their iconic brilliance with lustre in the movie Unakkaga Naan, of course GG having more scope to have an edge over NT due to the story line.
The song sequence 'Iraivan Ulagaththai Padaiththaanaa...' with the fitting voice by jesudas to GG remains till today the masterpiece of acting by GG in the apt company of another show stealer Nagesh! The movie could not have that scale of success as to the box office ringing of Becket and Namak Haram due to the changing atmosphere all over the country as regards the existence of textile mills replacing employees with automation!!
However, it remains one of the great movies for GG to parade his talent to emote!!
Burton Vs O'Toole in Becket!
