Some people have asked me in PM on what is the difference between copy and inspiration
well, it really depends on the person. one man's copy is another man's inspiration and vice versa.
for me, akkarai seemai azhaginilE is a copy of this piece:
In contrast, can we call ABC nee vaasi, as an inspiration from this piece?

We have discussed here zillion times about the ARR thing. When the same loop is used by 2 composers, the first one to release will be original and the second one will be 'COPY'. Tell me one ARR song which has a similar tune to another song.

so namma partners in this thread....but...
But pEsum maNi muthu rojakkal - pennalla pennalla oodhappoo, more than a passign resemblance.
you will not get a reply ajay.
when i tried to explain in another thread, i did not get a reply too.
pEsum maNi muthu rojakkal - pennalla pennalla oodhappoo
Sahara - Orey Naal
Enna Vilai azhage - Thangapadhakkathin Melae..
Idhellam orey raagathil amaindha paadalgal. He has shown creativity and uniqueness which has distinguished him from the other MDs and thats why he is ARR. But comparing him to blatant lifters like x,y,z is something irritating.
plum, everyone copies = all are the same?
I stand by the statement that everyone has copied. so no moral high ground please.
ajay, why does a talented musician need to use commercial loops?
plum has mentioned one song, there are many others throughout his career.
Using commercial loops is 10000000000000 times better than stealing someone else's creativity.
Ajay, it is more than orE ragathil amaindha paadal. The pallavi is literally the same.
Actually, I am not sure if they are the same raga, paradoxical as it sounds.
It is a bit like Yeh Dil Deewana-Inji Iduppazhagi.
AFAIK, there is nothing like a blatant lift in Rahman's career except for the starting phrase of Enna Vilai Azhage. Even IR has Kanavu Kaanum Vaazhkai which is ditto of Kasme Vaade Pyar Wafaa. Even the other ones quoted by NOV can be in disputed territory between copy and inspired. This one's complete line by line lift. There are stories around exchange of Ilaya nilaa and this one. But I just cannot imagine a sane reason why he did that.
Another one is Khaike Paan Banaraswala in the Telugu version of Don. That one was supposed to be due to NTR pressure, and it is understandable that IR wasnt influential in Telugu in late 70s. But in the 80s in tamil, he could have simply said Balu M to f-off if the latter insisted on lifting kasme vaade. Dont know why he didnt do that.
There were some ppl who compared 'Vaazhkaiye Alai pole' and 'Mukkaala'. Compared to that, this accusation is way better. :-)
ajay... commercial loop'na enna?
adhoda amma yaar? appa yaar?
enna kolam? enna gothram?
idha konjam vilakkamaa sollunga.
Softy,
Loops are bits of music, generally electronic, which gets repeated. There are loop banks which sells loops to musicians all over the world. They can use it as it is or can alter using delays, fusing 2 or more different loops.
Ajay and Softy, this might help

and also this

In the mid-90s, I remember Anu Malik saying in one interview that Mukkala was nothing but pyaar hua ikraar hua from Shree 420. He sang the two pallavis one after another and they did sound similar. But then life later thought me the lesson that whatever Anu Malik sings, they all sound like the same tune
Pyaar hua is the condom song, right?
ennadhu kaandam songA?
Softy,
Neer endra thalapathy...
Plum,
pEsum maNi muthu rOjAkkaL (father of peNNalla peNNalla) has its own parent - chim chimney chim chimney chim chim cheroo of the Disney classic Mary Poppins :-)
Ofcourse, it can be called inspiration :-)
sometimes sandhams too match and it sounds similar like case of orey naal and sahana......also, pesum mani muthu rojakkal is itself inspired from mary poppins which is a legendary piece of music like mozart, beethoven symphonies which people still use it as reference in their music........for IR too, en purusan dhaan and dum maaro dum sound very similar, we do not know what makes him compose like that, it could have been like paying tribute, which rahman does for so many MSV songs..............
but bracketing ARR with HJ and GVP for copying/inspiration is a joke given the sheer number of copies/inspirations of these composers.........come on, if u cant decide quality atleast look at the quantity
Ajay, this is to be expected. No one accepts their idol copies.
Ok, do you agree that there are 100s of songs in sivaranjani raagam? Now, how do they NOT sound alike? meaning not the same tune?
OK, let me agree with you on this.
But you have not answered my question.
OK, shall we leave it instead of opening the proverbial can of worms.
Lets just agree that EVERYONE copies. (please don't come back with "but....)
No. Not everyone copies.
Hi all!!
First of all each and every composer have their own inspirations. ARR had a few..He followed Vangelis, Dave Grusnin, Peter Gabriel and Pat Metheny very closely...Listen to the arrangements in "Netrillaatha Maatram" and Pat Metheny's "Last Train Home"...This is the classic case of inspiration....and you will be surprised to hear the similar arrangements...
Its very true, ARR has never copied a song fully and blatantly like his peers...There are sure inspirations..He is a clever musician who wanted to sound different and he has at times used tricks like taking the chord structure of a song and slightly modify it and fitting a new tune to it..The starting chord structure and beats of "Rhythm of Pride Lands" and "Poo Pookum oosai are similar..He creates a new tune out of no where...And there is this commercial loop thing..ARR himself admitted in one of his old interviews that he made an error by using the loop that Dr. Alban had used in his "Om We Rembwe"....Only after that, he started building his own loops..and expanded his library...
If one observes the songs, "Thenmerku Paruva Kaatru, Mukkaabula and Sundaraa(Super Police)" songs, it all had the same beats and the underlying chords pattern of the " Om We Rembwe" song..Here lies the brilliance of the composer...he has created a brilliant atmosphere in all the three songs...
If one follows the music of Indian film music, one can find lots and lots of songs with same beats but with extra ordinary tunes..IR experimented with mind blowing tunes and arrangements but used the same beat (predominant tabla usage) for many songs...There is nothing wrong in it...and when comes to western beats, people claim it to be a copy...There are lot of commercial loops and royalty free loops available in the internet and available with DAWs that anyone can use for their creations..There are several songs we hear daily and well immersed in our mind, and when composing, these permutations and combinations result in familiar tunes...After all music has only seven swaras....Really pity the composers...Lets enjoy the songs and surely ARR is a legend and has proved a lot and it will be very unfair to compare him to GVP, HJ and DSP......
thanks for the info musicman...
though this has been discussed n number of times, i wanted someone like u to give a explanation on what it is for everyone here to know.
Reg. loops :

ARR is just inspired by the arrangements and he has composed a beautiful evergreen number....
Music Man, we need more of your services. Thanks for the excellent explanation on "inspiration" and the links.
NOV Sir!!! Who knows..Even Mozart, Beethoven,Bach, Chopin and own carnatic and hindustani gurus will have their own inspirations...Those days, our composers took inspirations from their own folk music....Neenga solra western composers ellaarum avanga country music aalaa inspire aanavanga thaan....
