Boring movie. Too ambitious. Ends up doing nothing.
Quick (curiosity) questions as I will be watching is only on Saturday (maybe Sunday) :
1/ Imagination factor - specifically about its originality
2/ BGM
Apart from these 2, I will be looking out for art work along with the SFX/VFX, the water element embedded in the movie and the whole social theme surrounding Varna. Colors are visible in the trailer itself, so not going to go too much into it. And of coarse Anuska !

I dont think there will be any takers for this movie from Monday. Its a very amateurish film which will appeal to no particular section of the audience. Like Siva pointed out, Selva has planned a story on parallel universe and on the execution part, he has failed miserably. Arya doesnt have that 'thing' to pull of a serious role.
If what I'm reading from -ve reviews, it only proves that Aarya isn't capable of pulling an opening as a sole hero. He's only fit for mult-starrers (e.g Arrambam (disguised by AK's opening power), Raja Rani (I think 9tara's berformance + Jai talked about role = repeat audience.)
To the brave souls who ventured into Selva's ulagam, Aarya still giving wooden/zombie beformance like Raja Rani? Or did Selva actually extract his best?
Also, did Mayakkam Enna get a good run in cinemas?

Selvaraghavan – He is one of the most respected Directors in Tamil Cinema. He has worked on 8 movies till now and all his movies had been appreciated by different section of audience. Thulluvadho Ilamai, Kadhal Kondein, 7G Rainbow Colony were accepted by most section of audience, including Common Man and they were blockbusters. But, most of them felt that his best movie was Pudhupettai, 3 years after Theatrical release. Ayirathil Oruvan was one of the best experimental movies in Tamil Cinema, but it too didn’t succeed much at the box office. Only Rajini, Kamal, Vijay & Ajith movies are taken with a budget more than 50 Crores as these actors movies have the potential to collect more than 75 Crores. Other than these leading actors, Director Shankar is the only person who can take this risk and give a profitable movie to the producer. Selvaraghavan has taken a risk by having Arya in the lead role and taken a movie with more than 50Crores Budget. Common Man has to definitely like this movie to make it commercially success. Let us see whether it will satisfy the common man in this review.
Story: Movie travels simultaneously between our world & second world. Story of the movie is quite simple and it will definitely not confuse anyone. Selva experimented a lot in “Ayirathil Oruvan”, but due to the result of that movie, he has taken a complex story and narrated with simpler screenplay in this movie. Don't miss the title credits & complain that you didn't understand the movie.
Arya – Dhanush & Andrea were supposed to play the lead roles, when the movie started in 2008, but later it went through lots of changes and Arya became the lead actor. He has got more scenes to perform in the second half and has done a decent job. But, in few scenes, he could have acted much better.
Anushka –She has got a meaty role after Arundathi and has performed well. Her acting & dancing in the second world was too good.
Venkatesh as Arya’s friend has really done a good job. Other Supporting Actors are completely new and their acting looks amateurish
Cinematographer Ramji with the help of Art Director & CG works have made sure that Second World is Visual treat to the audience.
Visual Effects - Few people may complain about the VISUAL EFFECTS & compare it to AVATAR. We have Tamilians / Indians who can do much more better VFX than Hollywood Movies. Irandaam Ulagam is a Tamil Movie with budget around 50 Crores & not 500 Crores. As Tamilians, technicians don't have much scope to show their full potential in Tamil Cinema due to BUDGET Constraint. We have to encourage movies like this, so that producers will be willing to spend more money in their future projects.
Editing by Kola Bhaskar was excellent. A scene in which the second world and our world merges together was one of the best scenes in Tamil Cinema.
Harris Jayaraj’s Songs & Anirudh BGM combo has come out well. It is really difficult to compose BGM for a fantasy movie, but Anirudh has done a decent job.
Selvaraghavan – Pre-Interval & Post-Interval Scenes were the USP for this movie. First Half of the movie was a Romantic One with Selvaraghavan’s style of scenes & dialogues. Interval Block creates huge hype for the second half. Post-Interval Scene maintains the hype, but after that few clichéd scenes makes it little slow and ends with a lead to the “Third World”.
It is a FANTASY Movie and hence, people complaining about “LOGIC” should read the meaning of “FANTASY”. Few Critics may say that Foreign people speaking TAMIL in the Second World to be funny. The same critics will praise Hollywood Movie, when Foreign people speaks English or French. It is better than Tamil Movies having Hindi dialogues with Tamil Subtitles.
Overall, Irandam Ulagam will satisfy only Selvaraghavan Fans, People who love Unique Movies, Fantasy Movie Lovers who doesn’t compare it with Hollywood Movies, etc and it will not satisfy the people who expect Commerical Movies with engaging screenplay, Comedy Based Movies without stories, Build-up scenes which looks completely artificial, etc.

இரண்டாம் உலகம் (Spoilers Ahead)
இங்கு உண்மையான காதல் பூக்கப் போகிறது, இந்தத் திருமணத்தால் இந்த உலகத்திற்கு மாவீரன் ஒருவன் கிடைக்கப் போகிறான் என்று அந்த வண்ணமயமான உலகத்தின் தெய்வம் என்று சொல்லப்படும் அம்மா அவர்கள், அந்த நாட்டு தளபதியின் மகன் வீரமற்றவன் மறவன்(ஆர்யா) மற்றும் அழிக்கப்பட்ட இனத்தில் எஞ்சி நிற்கும் வீரலட்சுமியான வர்ணம் (அனுஷ்கா) இருவருக்கும் திருமணம் முடிக்கப்படுகிறது, அப்போது என்னை யாரும் அடிமைப் படுத்த முடியாது உங்களை அழித்தே தீருவேன் என்று தன்னைத் தானே கத்தியால் குத்திக்கொள்கிறார்.இதற்கு இணையாக இன்னொரு கதை நாம் வாழும் உலகில் நடக்கிறது. மதுபாலகிருஷ்ணன் (ஆர்யா), ரம்யா (அனுஷ்கா) இருவரும் காதலிக்கிறார்கள். திடிரென்று ரம்யா கால் தடுக்கி கல்லில் விழுந்து உயிரிழக்கிறார். மது தன் காதலி பிரிவை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியாமல் அவளை மறுபடியும் காணத் தேடி அலைகிறான். அந்தத் தேடலில் அவன் காதல் இல்லா உலகை அடைகிறான். இப்படிக் காதலிக்கும் ஒருவன்தான் காதல் இல்லா தன் உலகத்தில் காதலை விதைக்க முடியும் என்று அந்த தெய்வம் அம்மா நம்புகிறார். அந்த உலகத்தில் அவனால் காதல் மலர்ந்ததா? மது அவன் காதலியை அங்கு கண்டானா? என்பதுதான் இரண்டாம் உலகத்தின் கதை.
பிவிபி தயாரிப்பில் செல்வராகவன் இயக்கத்தில் வெளிவரும் இந்த இரண்டாம் உலகம் அவருக்கு ஒன்பதாவது படம். அவருடைய படங்களுக்குத் தனி ரசிகர்கள் இருப்பது உண்மை. ஏனெனில் அவர் அணுகி வரும் கதைக்களம் அப்படி. எதையும் ஆழமாக அலச முயற்சிப்பவர். ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவனில் தன் தனி முகத்தைக் காட்டியவர். அதில் அவர் வாங்கிய விமர்சனங்கள் அவரை செம்மை செய்திருக்க வேண்டும். அவருடைய இரண்டாம் உலகம் நிச்சயம் பிரமிக்க வைக்கும் என்று அனைவரும் எதிர்ப்பார்த்திருப்பார்கள்.
இரண்டாம் உலகத்தின் ட்ரைலரில் காண்பிக்கப்பட்ட, அனுஷ்கா ஒரு கொடூர மிருகத்தை வேட்டையாடும் காட்சிகளும் ஆர்யா வாளை எடுத்து ஆக்ரோஷமாய் ஓடிவரும் காட்சிகளும் அதன் மீதான எதிர்பார்ப்பை இன்னும் கூட்டியது. அதோடு ஒருவன் காதலுக்காக எவ்வளவு தூரம் பயணிக்க முடியும்? என்ற கேள்வியோடு படம் விளம்பரப்படுத்தப்பட்டது. காதல். இதற்குப் பலர் பல வகைகளில் அர்த்தம் சொல்வார்கள். ஆனாலும் அது இன்று வரை அனைவருக்கும் புரியாத ஒன்றாகவே இருந்துவருகிறது. அப்படிப்பட்ட காதலை கருவாகக் கொண்டு படத்தை உருவாக்கியிருக்கும் செல்வராகவன் காதலை எப்போதுமே வித்தியாசமாகப் பார்ப்பவர். அவர் பார்வையில் காதல் என்றால் என்னவென்று சொல்கிறார்? காதல் கொண்டேன், 7 ஜி ரெயின்போ காலணி ஆகியவற்றிலிருந்து என்ன வித்தியாசம் காட்டப்போகிறது? இரண்டாம் உலகம் என்பது என்ன? காதலுக்காக ஆர்யா எவ்வளவு தூரம் பயணிக்கிறார்? என்ற கேள்விகளுக்கெல்லாம் படம் பதில் சொல்லும் என்று பார்த்த எதிர்பார்ப்பெல்லாம் நிறைவேறியதா?
திரையரங்கத்தில் அருகில் இருந்த ரசிகர் தொடக்கத்தில் இது போன்ற கிராஃபிக்ஸ் காட்சிகள் தமிழில் முதல் முறை வருகிறது என்றார். உண்மைதான். அவர் ஏற்கனவே கிராஃபிக்ஸை ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவனில் பயன்படுத்தியிருந்தாலும் அதில் பெற்ற விமர்சனங்களிலிருந்து தன்னை செம்மை செய்துகொண்டிருப்பார்; எனவே இந்த இரண்டாம் உலகம் ஒரு வித்தியாசமான உணர்வை நமக்கு ஏற்படுத்தும்; உண்மையில் வேறொரு உலகம் இருந்தால் இப்படித்தான் இருக்கும் என்று நம்ப வைக்கும், மறு உலகமும் மறு பிறவியும் இன்னும் நிருபிக்கப்படாத நிலையில் இது தமிழ் மக்களுக்கு புதிய அனுபவத்தைத் தரும் என்ற ஆசையெல்லாம் இருந்தன. ஆனால் அவை எதுவுமே நிறைவேறாத நிலையில்தான் இரண்டாம் உலகம் இருக்கிறது. நினைத்த வண்ணங்களிலெல்லாம் பூக்கும் மரங்கள், செடிகள், கைக்கு எட்டும் தொலைவில் இருக்கும் கோள்கள் இவை தவிர அந்த இரண்டாம் உலகத்தில் எதுவும் இல்லை. எல்லோருமே இந்த பூமியில் சில நூறாண்டுகளுக்கு முன் இருந்த மக்கள் போலத்தான் இருக்கிறார்கள். அதே வாழ்க்கை முறை, உணவு என்று எதிலுமே வித்தியாசத்தை உணர முடியவில்லை. அந்த உலகத்தில் காதல் இல்லை. பெண்கள் அடிமைகளாக இருக்கிறார்கள். இவைதான் வித்தியாசம். இதுவும் இந்த உலகில் நாம் காணாத காட்சி அல்ல.
காதல் வாழ்க்கைக்கு மிக அவசியம் என்றும் உண்மைக் காதல் எதுவென்றும் சொல்ல நமக்கு ஆயிரக்கணக்கில் படங்கள் குவிந்து கிடக்கின்றன. காதலின் அவசியத்தைச் சொல்ல 60 கோடி ரூபாய் செலவழிப்பதில் தவறில்லை. ஆனால் காட்டப்படும் இரு வேறு உலகங்களுக்கான நியாயம் திரைக்கதையில் இருக்க வேண்டும். அது இல்லை. காட்டப்படும் உலகங்களும் அவற்றின் நிகழ்வுகளும் நம்மை பிரமிக்கவோ பரவசமடையவோ அல்லது சுவாரஸ்யப்படுத்தவோ செய்ய வேண்டும். இவை எதுவுமே இல்லை. சம்பந்தா சம்பந்தமில்லாமல் வெறொரு உலகத்தைக் கற்பனை செய்து, தொடர்பில்லாக் காட்சிகளைக் கட்டமைத்துக் கதைவிடுகிறார் இயக்குநர்.
ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன் படத்தில் வருவது போன்றே இதில் தெய்வத்தைக் கடத்தும் எதிரி கும்பலின் அட்டகாசம், வீரமே வராத ஒருவன் வீரனாக இருந்தால்தான் பெண் காதலிப்பாள் என்ற சித்திரம், இரண்டாம் உலகம் என்று தெரிவதற்காக வெள்ளைக்காரர்களை நடிக்க வைத்திருப்பது சுத்தமாகப் பொருந்தவில்லை.காதலின் மீதும் பெண்களின் மீதும் மரியாதை ஏற்படுத்த நினைத்த இயக்குநர் அதில் தவறிவிட்டார். படத்தின் தொடக்கத்தில் ரசிக்கவும் சிரிக்கவும் வைத்த மது, ரம்யா இருவரின் காதலிலும் புதிதாக எதுவுமில்லை. மதுவை இரண்டு வருடமாக உருக்கமாக காதலிக்கும் ரம்யா காதலைச் சொல்லும்போது மது மறுக்கிறார். அவர் மறுத்ததும் வேறோருவனை மணக்கத் தயாராகிவிட்டால், அந்த மணமகன் குடும்பச் சூழ்நிலையால் வேறு மணம் செய்துகொள்ள மறுபடியும் ரம்யா மதுவை ஏற்றுக்கொள்கிறாள். ஆஹா இதுவல்லவா காதல்?இரண்டாம் உலகத்திலாவது காதல் அதன் உண்மை முகத்தைக் காட்டுகிறதா என்றால் அதுவும் இல்லை. மதுவைப் பார்க்கும் வர்ணம் சலனமடைகிறாள், கைபிடித்த மறவனை அவளுக்குப் பிடிக்காமலே இருக்கிறது. காதல் எங்குமே தொடர்ச்சியாய் இல்லை. காதலை வலுவாகச் சொல்வதற்கு எதுவுமில்லை என்றால் எதற்காகக் காதலைக் கருவாக எடுக்க வேண்டும்? மறவனைப் பிடிக்காமலே வலம் வரும் வர்ணம் கடைசியில் காதலிப்பது, அந்தக் காதல் பூமியில் உருகி உருகிக் காதலித்த மதுவால் உருவானது என்று சொல்வது என அனைத்துக் காட்சிகளும் அபத்தமாகவே தோன்றுகின்றன. சிறு பிள்ளை வரைந்த ஓவியம்கூட ஏதேனும் கதை சொல்லும். அதைக் கூட இந்தக் கதையும் திரைக்கதையும் சொல்லவில்லை.
இயக்குனர் செல்வராகவனின் இந்தப் புதிய முயற்சியை பாராட்டத் தேவையான காரணங்களைப் பூர்த்தி செய்யாமலே விட்டதுதான் அவரது பெரிய பிழை. இரண்டாம் உலகம் என்பது கற்பனை உலகம் அதனால் என்ன வேண்டுமானாலும் செய்துகொள்ளலாம் என்று நினைத்துவிட்டாரா?குப்பை ராஜா வரும் காட்சிகள், இரண்டாம் உலகத்தில் வரும் சண்டைக் காட்சிகள், தெய்வம் வரும் காட்சிகள் என அனைத்துமே சிறிதும் கவரவில்லை. ஆர்யா குடித்துக்கொண்டே வாளை சுழற்றி சுழற்றி சண்டையிடும் காட்சிகளெல்லாம் உண்மையிலேயே கைகொட்டி சிரிக்க வைக்கின்றன. எதற்காக தெய்வத்தைக் கடத்துகிறார்கள்? எதற்காக எதிரி கும்பல்? எதற்காக ஒரு ராஜா? அவருக்கு எதற்கு சப்பை வீரர்கள்? எதுவுமே தெரியவில்லை. மொத்தத்தில் படத்தின் கருவான காதலுக்கும் இரண்டாம் உலகக் காட்சிகளுக்கும் சம்பந்தமே இல்லை.
இயக்குனர் செல்வராகவன் பல விதங்களில் சினிமாவை அணுகியிருக்கிறார். அவர் தன் பேட்டிகளில்கூட சினிமா பற்றிய விமர்சனங்களைத் தெளிவாக முன்வைத்திருக்கிறார். ஆனால் அவரே இப்படிக் கதையிலும் திரைக்கதைக் கட்டமைப்பிலும் கோட்டை விட்டிருப்பதுதான் முரணானது. ஆண், பெண், காதல் இவை மூன்றைப் பற்றி இன்றுள்ள நிலவரத்தை வசனங்களில் புகுத்திச் சிரிக்க வைத்திருக்கிறார். அதுவும் சில இடங்களில் மட்டுமே. ஒரு பெண் தானாக ஆண்மகனை அணுகினால் அவளை அயிட்டம் (item) என்றே நினைப்பார்கள் என்பதை எதை வைத்து அவர் முடிவு செய்தார் என்பது தெரியவில்லை. இயக்குனர் தன் முயற்சியை செவ்வனே செய்வதில் தோற்றிருக்கிறார். உண்மைக் காதலை உணர்த்த இரண்டாம் உலகமோ அல்லது கிராஃபிக்ஸ் காட்சிகளோ 60 கோடியோ அவசியமில்லை.
ஆர்யாவை அப்படியே தன்னைப் போலவும் காதல் கொண்டேன் தனுஷைப் போலவும் சித்தரித்திருக்கிறார். ரம்யா ரம்யா என்று அவர் கூப்பிடுவதும் அய்யய்யோ இல்லங்க இல்லங்க என்று சொல்லும்போதும் அப்படியே காதல் கொண்டேன் டிட்டோ. காதலியைக் கொஞ்சும்போதும் கலாய்க்கும் போதும் மட்டுமே ஆர்யா தன் சொந்த பாணியில் கவர்கிறார். உடலைக் கட்டுமஸ்தாக வைத்திருக்கும் ஆர்யா சண்டைக் காட்சிகளில் கவர்கிறார்.ரம்யா, வர்ணம் என வித்தியாசமான இரு பாத்திரங்களிலும் இதுவரை பார்க்காத தோரணையில் அனுஷ்கா ரசிகர்களைக் கவர்கிறார்.
ரம்யாவின் தோழி, மெடிக்கல் கேம்ப் சீஃப், மதுவின் நண்பன் ஆகியோர் சில நேரம் மட்டுமே வந்தாலும் சிரிக்கவைத்துவிட்டு செல்கின்றனர்.
ராம்ஜியின் கேமரா கோவாவின் சில இடங்களையும், பிரேசில் மற்றும் ரியோ டி ஜெனிரோவின் காடுகளின் வண்ணத்தையும் அழகாகப் பதிவு செய்திருக்கின்றன. பாடல் காட்சிகளும் அழகு மிளிர்கின்றன.திரைக்கதையும் கதையும் வலுவிழந்ததால் எடிட்டிங் செய்த கோலா பாஸ்கரைப் பாராட்ட முடியாமல் போகிறது.
படத்திற்கு இசை ஒரு ஆறுதல், பாடல்களில் ஹாரிஸ் ஜெயராஜ் வழக்கம் போல ரசனைத் ததும்பச் செய்திருக்கிறார்.
பின்னணி இசை அனிருத். அது காட்சிக்கு வலு சேர்க்கத் தவறவில்லை.
தீர்ப்பு: 1200 தியேட்டர்களில் உலகம் முழுவதும் வெளியாகும் இரண்டாம் உலகம் எந்த உலகத்தையும் வியக்கவைக்கப் போவதில்லை.
மதிப்பெண்: 2/5
Speilberg Selva sothapifies big time..quite a boring film..his fantasy didnt work for me due to poor execution..there were no positives at all except for the song kanimozhiye and mannavane..This movie was suppose to be abt pure love but sathiyama not even one scene that touches the heart..anirudh was completely lost..Arya's acting disability can finally been seen in this film..he has been surviving doing breezy roles but now its very obvious hes a bad actor..anuska had nothing much to do..looks old and fat..
Haven't seen one review calling Anoushka anything less than beautiful .

I wouldnt say Arya is a bad actor. He was very good in Arinthum Aritaamalum, Pattiyal, Oram po, Boss. At the same time, he can be wooden faced like in Madras Pattinam and Raja Rani.Quote:
