You have correctly segregated two aspects, singing and communication. The greatest of singers had both these in good measure and we can see that criticism of singers has also been in the area of communication. For example, I have seen many people criticizing Jesudas for having a great voice but probably understating the emotions. (Not for all songs but this criticism does exist.) Similarly Balu has been criticized for over dramatizing some of the songs. (Not under Raja but under other MDs.) So even the best of the singers have not been immune to criticism when it came to communication.
A great example where communication was considered more important than singing is the case of Mukesh, in Hindi Film Music. There are more than enough people who have said that he sang 'besura' (out of pitch) many times but his 'hit' percentage was very high. Though branded as a singer of sad songs, Mukesh was able to communicate emotions very well.
At the same time, if you have only communication skills and no singing skills, you will become like one of the typical project managers, i.e., someone who has great communication skills but has no clue on what is happening technically in his project :) The best of the singers had both these in good measure. In case of Raja, his singing skills are probably at an acceptable level while his communication skills are at a very high level. Hence there are people like me who like Raja as a singer.

Nice posts everyone. Atleast, oru 5-6 people got the point of the album-nu paartha IR-um sandhosha paduvaarnu nenaikkarEn.
Now, the extrapolated thought:
How many such "commercial advices" IR must have got from the Sony-type marketing department chappies? Is it any wonder that he steers clera of them and (thereby) makes the mistake of attaching with the welgates who probably jalra pottufy but actually make marketing mistakes? This is a vicious cycle for him
Not always - CK is a recent example otherwise :-)Quote:

Out of sheer gratitude for loads of pleasure that I've got over decades of listening to IR's music, I won't complain when IR gives Bhava lot of chances :-)
OTOH, IR deserves a lot of praises for his own singing - most songs he has sung are gems. Musically decent and linguistically / emotionally top-class!
Definitely I don't belong to the group that "only IR can sing ammA-TbI-this-that" etc, though I have serious reservations on all the "popular-post-SPB-male-singers" in TFM (HH-SM included). And I don't care for any of the "gAna-sabhA" singers (not my cup of chAi).
app_eng,
With you on the assessment of post SPB singers, including HH and SM. They are suited for certain type of songs and definitely do not have the versatility of SPB or Jesudas. Infact I had posted earlier in some thread that Hariharan somehow did not suit Raja's style of composition. Whenever I heard a song sung by him and the same song by Raja, I have always preferred Raja's version. No wonder he calls up an aging Yesudas to sing 'Onnukonnu' in Nandala.
Was just listening to Nandala. Not to irk Venki but I did find all the songs lovely in Raja's voice, especially 'Mella Oorndu Oorndu' and 'Or Vandu Kootame'. raagas has been writing about 'Kaiveesi' song and how it is a fresh song from Raja. A lovely album.
Nice point about hariharan - he sounds absolutely mellifluous in his no filmi albums and in songs where he is let loose- the music should wrap around him - so suitable for some music director who has liberty of pushing things after the singer has sung and make it fit - Raaja's style is very strict - singer has to sing within the params and yet emote well. That is difficult for the singer - but good for the song in the film. When there is such a limitation - raaja decides to step in and render a song showing how it is done.
I absolutely loved what he did to Vaanaville in ramana(better than the hariharan version) - so poignant - he delivered the most touching part of the movie in so much as a stanza - touching the right chords and filling in the blanks that AR. Murugadoss and Vijaykanth can't fill in. HAving said that let me also say that Hariharan is mind blowing when he sings 'thum bhi doondna' in chal chalein.
He has done so many 'fill in the blanks' with his music, singing and BGM - that he is so highly regarded among people - yet net being the free world and a humongous hyde park it is means people like Vysar can swoop in talk sh*t and get away - like the crows that do to the gandhi statues. I am sad that venkikram has also joined this misinformation campaigners group.
Jai,
'Tum Bhi Dhoondna' is extremely poignant and very well done by Hariharan.
