Thank you Nithya
FM you didnot miss much. Suman was totaaly unbearable and Radhika was highly irritating with her supposedly 'mazhalai' thamizh. Prathap was his usual self.
There is also a telugu version of IK with chiranjeevi and saritha in the lead.

Song: malai naattu machaane
Film: solaikuyil
Singer: Chitra
Lyrics: vairamuthu?
Music: Murari
Its a pity TF did not recognize the talents of MDs like Murari, Balabharathi, Devendran etc. 'solaikuyil' is the only film i know that had music by Murari.
'vasantha poonkaatre', 'aerikarai orathile' are other listen-worthy numbers in solaikuyil.
sOlai kuyil nenjukuLLe by Chitra is another number in solaikuyil worth listening. The only film in which Ragini acted before becoming Mrs Karthik.
Nitya, u think like me. One of my top 20 favorite albums, more or less 3 songs of Ilamai Kolam (barring Sridevi En, i really don't enjoy most of IR' pure classical songs, except for some super extraordinary ones like Naan Oru Ponnoviyum Kanden, Neelakuyile Unnodu Naan, Mayilaadum Thoppil, Poo Malarnthida) typified the "enigma" of IR and to what levels IR alone took it in the golden era of music all over the world. I would say the magic of 70s all can be experienced in those rare IR' songs played in radio ceylon in the late 70s, especially that of Ilamai Kolam, all songs of which was aired as if they had to do it ceaselessly.Quote:

malai nattu machchane was for kuyili, if I remember correctly.
kottunga ketti melam ketkattum ettu oorum
oththunga naathasawaram amman ther aadi vaarum
is also a nice song from the movie.
Murari performed well as MD in this film and he went unnoticed.
I believe solaikuyil songs were regularly played in ceylon radio. Songs are pretty decent.
RC,yvsmani thanks for the details.
FM solaikuyil songs were famous in vividhbharathis too

Song: selvame ore mugam
Film: amarakaaviyam
Singer: TMS
Lyrics: kaNNadasan
Music: MSViswanathan
Another Amitabh-Rakhee original and another bad, very bad remake. Not that the original 'Muqaddar ka sikandar' was a masterpiece but the presence of Rekha, amitabh, vinodh khanna etc made it watchable. Heavily bloated sivaji carrying 60+ kg belly was no match to the suave and charismatic amitabh. The presence of young stalwarts like Madhavi made sivaji look even older. Why such a great actor wasted his talents by taking these roles will always remain a mystery.
Original had music by Kalyanji-anandji . 'oh saathire' (The original of todays pick) is one of my top 10 Kishore kumar favorites.
MSV came up with a equally powerful version and TMS sings it with his own elan. This was the time when other singers were chosen to playback for sivaji. With this song TMS proves again that he will always be the apt voice for nadigar thilagam. There is a weak version of the same song sung by SPShaija.
I still remembered the day watched the movie on the very first day. There was a very big fight between me and friend to go for this movie, he was suggesting to go for 'Mouna Geethangal' but i convinced him somewhat and went to this 'painful' movie. Please don't ask me what was happend to me by the end the movie !
But this particular song was a beautiful a masterpiece by MSV and TMS.
Thanks Ramki
This song along with the Shailaja's song used to be played too often when it was released Tamil new year 1981. Raja Parvai released at the same time had to take a back seat. Being an Ardent IR fan never enjoyed this song then, also after seeing the song on Oliyum Oliyum. However after few years I took a liking for the song including Shailaja's version.
Also, 1981 summer was the worst I felt as an IR fan, what with Kal Thoon, Palaivana Chaoli and 5 more movies released on May 1st 1981 (all were declared bos office winners/commission earners) took chunck of the air time leaving little for Raja Parvai and KAzhugu to fight for their recognition.
Thanks once again for a lovely song. My humble opionion is the song should have gone to SPB who would have created a magic...
bala
sss :)
Balaji im surprised that rajaparvai songs were not played. I remember listening to andhi mazhai almost everyday, either in vividhbharathi or other madras stations.
I agree kazhugu songs did not get the air time they deserve.
Talking about kazhugu i watched 'sakkaLathi few' days back. IR has predominantly used 'kadhalenum kovil' tune as the bgm. I think
sakkaLathi was released before kazhugu.
Hi
sakkalathi came in 1979/80 I think.. (Introduction of Ambika )
1984 song Somebody' Watchin Me by Rockwell-Jackson resembles Selvamey (fantastic MSV song as good as Saathire Re)
nice song Ramki! I still remember this song and a fight scene. Didn't enjoy the movie that much :)
is 'kadavuL ninaithaan manaaL koduthaan' from amarkaaviyam? It's a nice song as well. I have seen bunch of movies to gether, now I can't tell which song is from which movie :)
FM, I think its from Keezhvaanam sivakkum
Thanks T! yes I remember the kizhattu sivaji with toppai in that song :)
Does anyone has the Keezhvaanam sivakkum song?? Songs were good and what a performance from Saritha. I'm not sure why Tamil Films could not hold on to such good artistes..
Thanks Madhu, natha1729
FM keezhvaanam sivakkum is a much much better film than amarakaviyam. Sivaji played his age and was superbly matched in performace by Saritha.

Song: paarthu koNdirundhaale
Film: chittoor rani padmini
Singer: Seergazhi Govindarajan
Lyrics: ?
Music: GRamanathan
When you think you have listened to almost all the tfmgems, you come across a masterpiece like todays pick and restart your search all again.
Sirgazhi has sung very few songs for Sivaji and i feel this is his best.
The song just took my breath away..He sings the swaras nonstop , barely taking a breath for almost 68 seconds(Listen to the tail end of the song). I personally feel this song deserve much more appreciation that it has now(not many are aware of its existence).
I think CRP had Sivaji and Padmini(or is it vaijayanthi?). I believe it was not a hit and the songs were soon forgotten.
This is a lenghty song(just over 7 minutes long). Somehow the file i have starts with 'vaarthaiyil viLangaadhu'. Im not sure if this is the start of the song.
Ramki: Nice song! I think it was Vaijayanthimala.
Ramki
Thanks for one more find. Godo to hear SG's ganeer voice.
yes Andhi Mazhai was played often, but more like later part of May/June. Madhura geetham (the 4:15 to 5:30 vividh bharathi program) used to play 'Azhaghe Azhagu' almost every day after June/July)
But being a person, who thought no other song other than that of IR deserve air -time , the new songs of other MDS playing often was hard digest then when I was a boy with litle maturity
Anyway thanks for your excellent selections
Bala
Ramki, a real gem. Seerkazhi's songs need to be explored further. This one belongs in the same league as his "Shivashankari"- another scintillating rendition. A reminder as to how "light" playback singing has fallen down to, these days.
Thanks raj, Balaji and Vijayr

Song: sangeetham en dhegam
Film: Bala Nagamma
Singer: Vani Jairam
Lyrics: Pulamaipithan
Music: iLaiyaraja
A brilliant composition by IR based on chitrambhari raagam(detail from raaga based songs thread). This is the only film song listed under this raaga.
VaniJairam displays again her mastery over classical based songs. She sings the difficult sandhams in the charanam with ease.
Ramki, I think "en vazhvil pudhu pAdhai kandEn" from Thanga padumai (PS) is also based on Chitrambari rAgam. Experts can confirm.
Bala nagamma had one more VJ solo, I guess. Any idea?
SN23 : it is manmatha ragangalae
u can find it in www.vanijairam.com
VJ's solo (as well as songs with PJ) always mesmerizes me. Her pronunciation, sandhams etc. thanks for uploading this song as POW.
Anatomy of Pleasure
What a bravura performance! Makes one think up phrases like "goose-flesh inducing," "delicious drowning" "force of nature" and "super dhool kilappal" - and still the essence, the pace, the clarity and the purity of the composition and voice - dodge such pithy punches.
In an interview published in The Economic Times (February 3, 2005) VJ says this: "I am a real nut for hard work. That is how I have earned a good reputation in my line." The hard work in a song like the one featured today might just be to make it all look so easy. ...As in the taan that follows "Aagaya Gangaikkum Theeradha Dhagam..." and returns to the first syllable of the opening word seamlessly. The gentle sigh in "perumoochchu vaangum" and the rhetoric of sympathy within "adhu engu thoongum?" and the repetition of "Sangeetham" - short, tall, grande - these are all moments of love's labour.
IR , when he sets himself up for a challenge like this, invariably peaks. The composition captures a royal hall (or a temple courtyard) congregation at dusk (jaathi mallippoo pole andhi maalai pooththaval) and the song washes over like a quick wave of starlit sky. The rhythmic and melodic patterns merge with grace, like two palms pressed in greeting, and the recital begins. The heat of excitement, the descending hush...It is all there in the interludes, you just have to come a bit closer to the song...
Body Music. Body of Music. An Out of Body experience.
Sangeetham... Nam Yogamandro?
Sn23 thanks for the info. 'sangeetham' and 'manmatha raagangaLe' are for Manju Bhargavi i think.

Song: varavendum maharajan
Film: pagadai pannirandu
Singers: PSuseela, SPB
Lyrics: ?
Music: Chakravarthi
Thanks to RC for sending this song. This is a nice duet from the dubba kamalhassan-sripriya film. I think the film is one of the few duds this duo acted together like oh mariah, mangaLa vaadhiyam, ram lakshman etc.
'kodeewaran magaL', 'oonjalaadum uravugaL, 'mudisooda mannan' are some of the movies TeluguFM MD chakravarthi did and almost all of them had atleast one good song.
A nice song by the duo. Heard the song for the first time a couple of years back.
ramki : "oh mariah" illai, its "maria, my darling" . maria, my darling song irunthaal POWil host seiyungal
Ramki
'mudisooda mannan' had that wonderful 'Thodangum Thodarum pudu ulagam'. I think the MD was Sathyam not Chakravarthi
Bala
Hi Ramki !
"oonjaladum uravugal" - is it the remake of malayalam film "katrathe kilikoodu" ? with Sivakumar and Srividhya in lead role ? R u sure abt the MD ?
Hi, am not sure about the Mal original of Oonjalaadum uravugal. But am sure about OU's music director "dangu takku" Chakravarthi. OU was shot in Telugu as well Tamil. Suresh and Sridurga (Kannada Malaasree's name in Tamil) also acted in the movie, as youth pair. There is a great Solo by PS accopanied by (Maragadha) VeeNai, for Srividya (VeeNai enadhu kuzhandhai.. madi meedhu naan vaiththu thalaattuvEn...). Veru nice song.
Ramki: Thanksma for this Pagadai duet song. It is worth listening. First time kEtkirEn :-)
Sometime ago we talked about the movie Ragupathy Raghava Rajaram. This weeks Anandha Vikatan has an interview with Jayachandran who acted in this movie. (I thought it was Singer Jayachandran)
http://www.vikatan.com/av/2005/jul/17072005/av0508.asp
Mani thanks :) its ofcourse 'mariah my darling' .
Balaji i always thought 'MM' was by chakravarthi. But its hard to differentiate between chakri and sathyams songs.
Madhu yes its a remake of kaathrathe kiLikoodu. It had jaishankar, srividhya, suresh and sridurga. The film was very good and jaishankar's acting was a treat to watch. I think soman did this role in Malayalam. If i remember right, Revathi played the role of sridurga.
RC thanks for the link.

Song: veedu thedi vandhadhu
Film: peNNin vaazhkai
Singers: PSuseela, Jaichandran
Lyrics: Vaali?
Music: GKVenkatesh
First my apologies for the poor audio quality. This was the best i could do with the file i had.
This is a beautiful annan-thangai song by GKV. This song reminds me 'poovile medai naan podavaa', not that there are any similarities between these two other than the singers, but the melody and the lyrics gives the same feel.
'peNNin vaazhkai' had Sudhakar, sumathi, Rathi agnihotri, aruna etc. This song is picturized on sudhakar and sumathi. I think this is a telugu remake and the original was directed by vijayanirmala.
Another good song from PV is 'maasi maasam muhurtha neram' (PS,JC).
Hi Ramki..
its a very nice song ! I still remember the advt. in Vivid Bharathi..
"idhu oru peNNin vazhkai alla.. moonRu peNgaLin vazhkai"
and there is one more nice song "janakan pon mAne" by SPB and PS.
Ramki,
PV had 3 JC-PS duets. POW + Maasi Maadham + "Malligai poovil indru vandhadOr thendral indru...". Malligai duet is also very sweet.
kEtkaradhukku mattum thaan. pAkkaradhukku illai (Sudhakar with Rathi Kashtam  )
