Naan Unney Ninaichen is a classic classic. SG whenever they gave super hits they became classics without match"
Nalla Manam Vazhga (who can dispute the unparalleled beauty of this song)
Kaettadhu Kidaithathu Kodi Kanakkil
Paniyum Naane Malarum Niye (what feeligns this song gives me on a rainy day beats out the other two favorites that too from IR - O Nenjame Idhu Un Raagamey and Pani Mazhai Vizhum Paruva Kulir Ezhum)
I think the 70s and upto mid 80s until when SG were around, TFM retained the charm built from the 50s itself. After 85 or so when IR also lost all competition, he went into different sounds and feel and also seemed dull for sometime.
SG is one duo that i cherish the most. I think IR even gave a tribute in one song to the SG atyle of composing - it is in Poonthalir - Nenachethallam ...... Yen Kaadhal Raani. Hear it.
TFM needs to honor these underrecognized geniuses.

CM: I am definetely with u on the sentiments you expressed. Thanks as well for correcting me on the film for the song "Endhan pon vanname". On the devotionals I remember one song ringing in Mylapore during those days and here it is:
"Karpoora nayagiyae kanagavalli Kali mahamayee karumariyamma". I think it was renderd by Manorama. Which reminds me one more cinema song by her:
Manja kayiru thaali manjakayiru...:-)
raj: Thanks for the details furnished. U have exactly echoed my thoughts on Edo Oru nadiyil song.
Today's trailer for me centered around my craze to see films shot abroad. Notably I remembered the following films/songs:
Malai rani mundhani sariya sariya (Ore vaanam ore bhoomi *ing KRV,Jaishankar and Seema)
Germaniyin Sendhen malare and
Deiviga raagam from Ullasa parvaigal
Joyful Singapore Colorful Malaysia (SPB & VJ) from Varuvaan Vadivelan
Seeing the dolphins jump about in Ore vaanam Ore bhoomi was such a thrilling experiance for me then...:-). Those were the days when our/my parents/grandparents kept track and even chose films we saw !!!!!
And then who can forget the unforgettable Ninaithaale Inikkum!!!!!

Raj,
We seem to have something in common here, yeah I was a big fan of songs shot in foreign films. To the extent the first time I was on the Singapore Airlines bound for TOkyo my first time outside India. I couldnt contain my heart singing "Vaanile vEsham kalaindhadhu nadagamanadhu thiruvizha...." complete till the last line "Aagayathil boogambam arputhangal aarambam..".
I used to always kindal adichufy MSVs way of composing for those songs shot in forign locations, it usually start with a sound like a spoon made to hit on a glass tumbler. Maybe because that he associated that sound with the Far east and most of the songs were either shot in Singapore/malaysia etc.
One rare song that I remember seeing is a song in some movie that had Sivakumar and Rathi, the song goes like "Paarunga Tokyoooooo Juliet Romeoooo" oppsoite to the Shinjuku station. I still remember that because I saw the song for the first time in Tokyo.
My fav. forign shot songs of yore are
1. Orey Vaanam orey bhoomi...
2. Songs of Ullaasa Paravaigal
3. Ninaithale inikkum
4. Songs of Priya
And ofcourse the all time fav "Sorgame endraalum adhu nammooru pola varumaa"

I also saw the song in one of the tamil MP3 Sites under SPB collections, which I do not remember. Searching Tamilterra.com or other related sites, you may find it. I remember seeing 10 or 12 of SPB rare 70's hits in that site.

Thoda varavo thondaravo ===
Thoughts go years back. The original was a wonderful duet by RajKumar and SJ in the movis 'Giri Kanya'. What an excellent composition 'Nagu Nagutha Nee Baruve'.
I was very angry with KD when he wrote a lyric that I cannot sing aloud in front of the family members. Even now I feel sad that such a great tune got a 'DUBBINGISH' lyrics.
Great singing once again by SJ (was it Rajan or Nagendra humming with her?)

Saravanan Sir!!
Thanks a lot for the fantastic input ( as usual!!!). I am not aware of the film or the song
situation for Kadalin Alaigal.Probably you can add more light in that direction.
Could you also post the complete lyrics as well? TIA..:-).
I thought over the song, the lyrics, the choice of melody and the rendition.IMO the lyrics
and the raaga gel so very well.Look at the involvement with which SPB renders it..I think
he loves Desh...reminds me of his dialogue with Suhasini in Mandhal Urudhi Vendum
and he sings the pallavi of the classic Desh song from Or-Iravu, "Thunbam Nergaiyil
Yazh edutthu nee inbam serkamaattaya".Would luv to hear that sound track of SPB's rendition
of that classic.
BTW is kadalin alaigal song available somwhere on the net? Perhaps can request bb to post in
SOTD .WOuld luv to hear it.For the benefit of others ..Desh is a light classical melody
and you have only the so called tukkadas-smallish compositions rendered at the end of
concerts in it. But SPB's rendition IMO is a treatise on this raaga. Apart from Thunbam
Nergaiyil and Kadalin Alaigal I dont remember any major song in Desh. More info welcome.
Incidentally remembered a few more songs!!!
1.
Uravugal Thodargathai
Dinam dinam valarpirai
Iniyellam sugame-JC Film?/MD?
2.
