Arvind,
Saw you link on twitter. So this was what the UK based guys were singing? Quite a nice tune. Wish he expands on this and makes it a full fledged song :)
Adnan Sami says, he is a huge fan of IR:
"...I am also a huge fan of Ilaiyaraaja and L Subramaniam."
http://articles.timesofindia.indiati...bi-rajinikanth
"...Adnan hopes to work with Ilaiyaraaja and feels that the composer is a living legend. “He is so humble. In fact, people in the Tamil music industry itself are unassuming..."
http://www.thehindu.com/life-and-sty...cle2396806.ece
Maybe he is saying it as he is in chennai or may be he admires IR because of IR's SADMA and some of his recent movies (cheeni kum, paa, etc) and/or hearing bits and pieces when he was in Chennai, but I feel Adnan (and many north celebrities) haven't truly experienced IR's musical variety/knowledge/experiments/effects to actually realise what he says.
Digression: From the above "The Hindu" interview: "...He may not have managed to pick up any Tamil but he says whenever he is singing in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam or any regional language, he ensures he gets the pronunciation right. “I insist on having a linguist who can coach me. I work on the words, and the emotion..." -
Comedy pannadheenga sir :)
thanks,
Krishnan
Small tidbit:
Rahul Ram from Indian Ocean says
"...The south Indian legend Ilaiyaraaja and his son Karthik K Raja were really good with innovative music that had the shades of rock in it..."

thanks,

Did you guys notice one thing! Both Ponnar sankar & Sri Rama Rajyam actually are period films. But Raja looks like, was not asked to compose with the music/instruments of that time, a period film et all. That would not a case for directors like Maniratnam & Kamal. I guess the tunes can fairly be used to other films too which are of recent times. But that was not a barrier and Songs impresses as usual.
SriRamaRajyam looping past few days!
And Sri Rama Lera is of same raga of this song from Kathirunthua ValliValli(Mallu Vetti Minor) ?!? http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer...886%27&lang=en
I am poor in ragas :(
I am also not an expert SKV, but I dont think they are the same raaga.
Suresh/Usha/Vel- Clarify paNNunga
SKV, to me Sri Rama Lera sounds more like PanthuvarAli. (Piraye piraye, ROjAvai thAlAttum thendral, portions of Nalla nEram nEram)
KAthirundha malli is not a single ragam song... it has doses of Amruthavarshini, which is basically Panthuvarali without Ri and Dha, which, I guess, could've given you that thought (There was a detailed analysis done by Raagas and Suresh a while back on this song).
KV, is there not a hint of Amruthavarshini as Sri Rama Lera begins(thoongadha vizhigaL reNdu mAdhiri irukkum)?
Also, is panthuvaralai = suba panthuvarali, the raagam that invokes pathos? Pyaar yeh jaane kaisa hai kooda adhu dhAnE?
Plum, I'm no expert on this topic either. I can't exacly recall the prelude, so I can't comment on that one. But the starting lines have an Agmark IR Panthuvarali touch (IMO pOtudrEn).
And PV <> SPV.
SPV, yes, generally sOgam milkings and all that. PV, has a more complicated, intriguing, almost meditative feel to it.
Technically the only diff I think is the ‘Ga’ (PV uses a sharper Ga) while rest of the notes are all same, but each ragam has a distinct flavour to it.
