FR. THOMAS CHELLEN DESCRIBES THE ORISSA MOB ORDEAL
Fr.. Thomas Chellen, director of the pastoral center that was destroyed with a bomb, had a narrow escape after a Hindu mob nearly set him on fire. Currently undergoing treatment at a Catholic hospital in Orissa's capital Bhubaneswar , Fr. Chellen had this horrifying experience to share with Catholic News Service:
'They had poured kerosene on my head, and one held a matchbox in his hands to light the fire. But thanks to divine providence, in the end, they did not do that. Otherwise, I would not have been there to tell this horror,' the 55-year-old priest, director of the pastoral center at Konjamendi in the Indian state of Orissa, told Catholic News Service in a telephone interview from his hospital bed Aug. 28.
When a Hindu mob of 500 people broke into the pastoral center around noon Aug. 24, Father Chellen said he fled through the backyard with another priest and a nun.
'It was heartbreaking for us to watch from a distance the entire complex go up in smoke,' said Father Chellen, who had supervised the construction of the center that opened in 2001 and could accommodate 200 people.
'They vandalized everything and set it on fire. It has been reduced to ashes,' he added.
As the three watched from a distance, some other priests told them to flee.
'We fled to the jungles and came in the night to take shelter in the house of a Hindu friend and spent the night there,' Father Chellen said, adding that the second priest left them to join other priests.
The following morning, he said, the Hindu family moved the priest and nun to an adjacent vacant house and locked it to give the impression that no one was inside.
However, the Hindu mobs overheard the priest speaking on his cell phone, broke into the room and dragged him and the nun outside.
'They began our crucifixion parade,' said Father Chellen. The gang of about 50 armed Hindus 'beat us up and led us like culprits along the road' to the burned pastoral center.
'There they tore my shirt and started pulling off the clothes of the nun. When I protested, they beat me hard with iron rods. Later, they took the sister inside (and) raped her while they went on kicking and teasing me, forcing (me) to say vulgar words,' said the priest who has cuts, bruises and swollen tissue all over his body and stitches on his face.
'Later both of us, half-naked, were taken to the street, and they ordered me to have sex with the nun in public, saying nuns and priests do it. As I refused, they went on beating me and dragged us to the nearby government office. Sadly, a dozen policemen were watching all this,' he said.
Angry at his plea to the police for help, the mob beat the bleeding priest again.
Later, a government official and members of the mob took the priest and the nun to the police station, where Father Chellen said he was kicked in the face.
'The four-hour ordeal ended when a senior police officer arrived in the evening,' said Father Chellen.
The priest said one of the most hurtful things about the incident was that some local Hindus whom he knew were watching the events and ignored his requests for help.

As long as such barbaric acts are justified as 'spontaneous reactions' of the affected, these incidents are sure to continue.
Human values being destroyed for the sake of religions !!!

சென்னை திருவெற்றியூரைச் சேர்ந்தவர் அருண். இவருடைய மகள் மகாலட்சுமியும், அதே பகுதியைச் சேர்ந்த திவ்யா என்பவரும் கரூரில் உள்ள தனியார் நிறுவனத்தில் பணிபுரிந்து வந்தனர். அவர்கள் சென்னை திரும்புவதற்காக திருச்சி மத்திய பேரூந்து நிலையத்தில் நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தனர். அப்போது, அங்கு வந்த ரயில்வே பாதுகாப்பு படையைச் சேர்ந்த சரவணன், தன்னை காவல்துறை இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் என்று அறிமுகப்படுத்திக்கொண்ட அவர், அவர்கள் இருவரையும் விசாரணைக்கு கண்டோன்மென்ட் காவல்நிலையத்துக்கு அழைத்து செல்வதாக தெரிவித்தார். இதனையடுத்து, இரண்டு பெண்களையும், தன்னுடைய மோட்டார் பைக்கில் ஏற்றி அழைத்துச் சென்றார். பின்னர், அவர்களை பலாத்காரம் செய்ய முயன்றுள்ளார். அவரது பிடியில் இருந்து அந்தப் பெண்கள் தப்பி ஒட முயற்சித்தனர். பின்னர், மீண்டும் அவர்களை மிரட்டி அழைத்து வந்துள்ளார். அப்போது தான், அவர் இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் பெயரைச் சொல்லி மோசடி செய்தது தெரியவந்தது. இதுகுறித்து விசாரணை நடத்திய கண்டோன்மெண்ட் காவல்நிலைய இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் சுந்தரமூர்த்தி, சரவணனை கைது செய்தார். 2 பெண்களும் பத்திரமாக மீட்கப்பட்டனர். கைது செய்யப்பட்ட சரவணன், சிறையில் அடைக்கப்பட்டார். இந்த சம்பவம் திருச்சியில் பரபரப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது.

BAIR VILLAGE, NEAR NOIDA: Falling in love continues to be fatal in western Uttar Pradesh. In what appears to be an incident of honour killing, two teenage lovers were brutally murdered and then set on fire in Bair village, barely 50 km from New Delhi. Some villagers said the assailants even chopped off the boy's private parts.
Class disparity, rather than caste difference, appears to have caused the savagery. Both teenagers were Dalits. But Rekha, an 18-year-old Class X student, belonged to a more affluent family than her lover Sonu, a 17-year-old Class XI student. The girl's father, Gulab Singh, is a rich farmer who also owns a ration shop. The boy's father, Raju, ekes out a modest living singing jagrans in the area.
The grisly incident took place in a field next to a forested area in Bair village under Kakor police station in Gautam Buddha Nagar district, when the two were allegedly found together in a "compromising" position by the girl's family around 10am on Thursday.
Enraged family members strangled her with her own chunni. The boy was beaten to death. The lovers were then set on fire on a pyre of maize husk. According to the police, the lovers studied in a local inter-college and had been warned several times by the girl's family against meeting each other.
Rekha's grandfather, Pooran Singh, who allegedly incited the father and led the onslaught, has been arrested. Gulab Singh and some other relatives involved in the killing are absconding.
As a precautionary measure, a police force, backed by the Provincial Armed Constabulary, has been deployed in the area.
Senior Superintendent of Police R K Chaturvedi rushed to Bair, 45 km from Noida.

//Bhubaneswar: The key accused in the gang-rape of a nun has been arrested in Orissa's volatile Kandhamal district, where communal clashes since Aug 23 have left at least 35 dead and thousands homeless, police said on Wednesday.
Santosh Pradhan was arrested from Baliguda town on Tuesday and produced before a local court, a police officer told IANS.
Police had earlier arrested four men - Juria Pradhan, Kartik Pradhan, Biren Kumar Sahu and Tapas Kumar Patnaik - for their alleged roles in the crime, he said.
The nun had filed the complaint on Aug 26 - three days after a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader was killed, triggering a spate of violence targeting Christians and churches in which at least 35 people lost their lives.
Though the report was filed many weeks ago, police collected the medical examination report only last week after the media reported the issue and Sister Nirmala, superior general of Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity, wrote to the state authorities seeking justice for the nun.
The medical examination report confirmed that she was raped. The state government suspended the inspector in charge of the Baliguda police station, where the nun had filed her complaint.
According to the nun's written complaint, a mob of about 40 to 50 armed men attacked a house at K. Nuagaon village where she along with a priest, Father Thomas Chellantharayil, had taken shelter after their centre was attacked.
The mob dragged her and the priest and took them to the deserted office of an NGO where she was allegedly stripped and raped by one from the mob. The priest was doused with petrol and beaten up.
They also paraded her naked on the streets, she alleged, saying that the incident occurred in the presence of a dozen policemen.
The state government has sent a police team to New Delhi, where the nun has taken shelter, officials said. The state government has assured all help and protection to the nun and said she needs to come to Orissa and identify the culprits.//
