Thankyou Madhu,SN23 for additional details.
Thanks for reminding 'janakan poNmaane'. Its a very nice song indeed.
Pick #137
http://tfmpage.com/stream/songs/lakshmi_ppp.rm
Song: Lakshmi vandhaaL
Film: Panam peNN paasam
Singers: SPB, SPShailaja
Lyrics: Pulamaipithan?
Music: Shankar Ganesh
"maana ho thum" (KJY), one of very few original songs of BappiLahri is a source of inspiration to 2 songs 'madhanotsavam'(sadhurangam-VK) and todays pick.
While madhanotsavam was a fairly hit song, lakshmi vandhaal did not get many rasigars.
'Panam peNN paasam' was a fairly engrossing film with Muthuraman, saritha, vadivukarasi and vijayababu. I think with this film vadivukarasi started doing mother roles. Muthuraman played a character with shades of grey and saritha played his rebellious daughter. Vadivukarasi played Muthurams paralyzed wife.
'kalaimaamaniye'(VJ,JC) is another good song from PPP.
Hi Ramki !
the story was a popular serial in "Kumudam" by Javar Seetharaman.
though his other story "udal poruL Anandhi" came as a TV serial, the famous "Minnal mazhai mohini", which was filmed with Gemini, Padmini and Vanisree never got completed !
Is there any other song in the movie ? Only these two songs are popular... !!
madhu, paNam peN paasam also came out as a serial (on SUN tv) with Nihalgal Ravi as the father, Richa the daughter and Jaanavi as the mad mom.
Ramki, PPP was fairly a hit movie, I think. May not be a super-hit. MR and Saritha did extremely well.
Lakshmi vandhal was a good well suited song for stage singing. Esp, SPS's himming part. SPS did well but one could see a over-do from SPB's side ??
I think Vadivukkarasi started her mother role in YeNi padigaL itself, which came much before this.
Madhu: UPA by Javar was tried with CVRajendran team with Sivaji, Jayalalitha (wife character) and Usha Nandini (Anandhi). But this also did not hit the screen.
As RR said, PPP serial in TV was a xerox copy of the PPP movie. Edha copy pannaradhu-nnu oru vevasthayE kidayaadhu :-)
Ramki
Thanks for the nice song (never connected to the "Mano Hai Tu" song. Thanks for the bringing in the connection
a. The songs were very popular in Ilangai Vanoli
b. Ran for 35 days in Trichy in 77/78 which is considered a decent hit in Trichy
Bala
and "lakshmi VandhaaL" itself somehow seems to have inspired "aadhayen bhi hai, mohabbat bhi hai" from Aashiqui, an early 90s Hindi hit :-)
Thank you madhu
SN23 in 'aenipadigaL' vadivu played mother to Haja sheriff. In couple of years she plays mother to saritha..a 'hefty' promotion indeed :))
vijayr good find:). That song is from 'dil hai to manta nahin'(NS is the MD)
I also find similarities betweem Lakshmi vandhaaL and 'devamirtham jeevamritham'(moondru mugam)
Pick #138
http://tfmpage.com/stream/songs/sriranjani_ttk.rm
Song: sriranjani en sivaranjani
Film: thambi thanga kambi
Singers: KJYesudoss, Chitra
Lyrics: Vaali
Music: Gangai amaran
Another nice duet by GA and as always sung very well by KJY and KSC. Im not sure if the song is based on sriranjani raagam.
TTk had vijayakanth, rekha, Lakshmi, ramyakrishnan etc. I remember watching this film few years ago on DD. The song picturization is still very fresh in my memories(I had nightmares for so many days..how can i forget it:))
Read ahead Only If you have a strong/brave heart:
In the song both vijaykanth and rekha, dressed as mermaids , with buckets of rosepowder painted on their faces, will keep pouting their lips like the fishes do and they will go kissy kissy on each other cheeks. All these will be shown in close up for painful long torturing 3 minutes.
adding on to the link between "maana ho thum" and "madhanotsavam", the rojaa malarE song, azhagOviyam uyiraanadhu by aadiththiyan (?) is a shameless copy of the latter!

Beautiful,true comments!!!!!!!!
With Love,
Usha Sankar.
Vijaykanth in mermaid costume-aa? AyyahO kadavuLe :-( idhu thAngAdhu. Mermaid-naa kadal kanni achE? Ivaru yaaru?
Ramki: You know there is a rare combination of singers for a triangular love song starting with "Kadhal polladhadhu". SPB for VK, PS for Rekha and Chitra for RamyaKrishnan. Good song.
one of my favourite duets by KJY - KSC.
the film sank without a trace.
ramki :
VK - lakshmi combination ninakkum poluthu i could think of kaalaiyum neeyae maalaiyum neeyae film.
is there any possibility of uploading songs of that film ??
SN23 i do not remember that song. Thanks for mentioning it.
SPB-PS-ksc is a rare combination.
yvsmani Im not sure i have KNMN songs. But i will definitely ask around
Pick #139
http://tfmpage.com/stream/songs/maanth_dt.rm
Song: maanthaLire mayakamenne
Film: Devathai
Singer: SJanaki
Lyrics: kaNNadasan?
Music: Shyam
Devathai, a supposedly comeback film of veteran actress Jayanthi, had 2 beautiful solos by SJanaki.
The popular 'Galeer galeer' and todays pick.
'maanthaLire' , little bit inspired from 'aajare' (madhumathi) starts like 'annakiLi' song(the humming part) and the interludes have salilda's touch . So does most of shyams songs anyway.
Devathai had Jayanthi, sivakumar, Lavanya, jaiganesh . I remember watching this film few years ago on DD . A 2.30 hrs film was heavily censored to last less than 1.30 hrs. The film had a malayalam feel throughout..slow moving, explicit(in 1970s standards) and a tragic ending.
I think todays pick is picturised on Layanya
HI Ramki !
a nice song.. indeed.. picturised on Lavanya. ( but the picturisation is not good.. with bad dress sense ... and not so good dance movements)
Just to hear the song is more than enough.. than to see !! We can imagine a beautiful scenario in our mind...
thanks for this lovely song !
The opening humming reminds me of kaNden engum poomagaL naatiyam... not sure if this is just me or not! But MaanthaLire is indeed a very nice song. Am hearing it after a very long time. As usual SJ excels in this song. Thanks for the treat Ramki!
Nice song.
To me the songs sounded more like 'Kuyile Kavikuyile..'
Thanks once again for giving us the lost gems
Bala
Thanks Madhu, RC and balaji.
IMO, the song has slight resemblance to all the 3 songs.
Are there any other song in Devathai other than these 2 solos?
Well, I have been a mad follower of IR since 1976 and I know for sure, IRs peak was between 1979 and 1983. After that the melody was lost and eventhough he was the king for the entire decade, the early 90s saw him losing interest as it was too much to be on top .
Any way he is not merely a Raja , he is an emperor
Yes, in early 90s IR was loosing his interest because of his previous tunes repeated by him again, whether with or without his knowledge.
Pick #140
http://tfmpage.com/stream/songs/oadug_bk.rm
Song: odugindraaL urugugindraaL
Film: BadrakaLi
Singer: Seergazhi Govindarajan
Lyrics: vaali
Music: iLaiyaraja
BadrakaLi is one film i regret not watching yet. I have listened to the olichitram few times but never had the opportunity to watch it.
But never once in India i had listened to todays pick. I came to know of this song only through musicindiaonline.
This must be one of the very few songs(2 songs?) Sirgazhi sang for IR. Usage of his voice and also the interludes gives this song a very MSV feel.
But the real highlight is vaalis lyrics. I feel this is one of his best in IR's music.
Hi Ramki !
of course its a rare one ! its not aired often like the other song "Anandha bhairavi"by MRV from the film....
May be the popularity of the film by the sudden demise of the heroine in the air crash and the popular "kannan oru" song are reasons for the Not-so-popular-and-not-heard-often feeling of this song !
BTW, how many SG-IR combinations are there ? any idea ?
All 5 songs from "Bhadrakali" are available at Music India Online.
And just so you guys know, the heroine Madhu is referring to was Ranichandra (courtesy www.imdb.com)
Madhu
I remember only one more song - 'thaiye mookambike' (he sang with BM,MSV,SJ and MV)
Pick #141
http://tfmpage.com/stream/songs/sorname_sks.rm
Song: sorname sorgame
Film: sagalakala sammandhi
Singer: VaniJairam
Lyrics:?
Music: Shankar Ganesh
A soulful song , beautifully rendered by VJ. IMO this is one of her best from early 90s
I watched this painful movie in kovai. Its a typical visu film with a herd of actors (his usuals Manorama, chandrasekar, pandian, aruna, madhuri, ranjani, kishmu etc) and a central issue which ofcourse visu , the sagalakala sammandhi , resolves it in the end. In SKS the issue is widow remarriage. Charany played the widow's role. The issue and the movie was so outdated even for 90s.
Todays pick is the only song i remember from SKS.
Ramki,
Thanks for the lovely song. Visu always reserved one solo for VJ in most of his movies. And all of them are very good songs. Here are some:
Kattikkarumbe Kanna - Samsaram Athu Minsaram
Moongil Ilai Kadugale - Penmani Aval Kanmani
Paarthu Sirikkuthu - Thirumathi Oru Vegumathi
Santhoshame Ullasame - Varavu Nalla Uravu
Cudaraga Oliyaaga - Aval Sumangalithaan
I am not sure if Urimai Oonjaladukirathu is by Visu. It has a song "thenna maraththula nellu muLaippathu eppOthu", a solo by VJ.
Some other songs by VJ in the early 90s are the songs from the films "Pathini Penn", "Amma Pillai" and "Abhirami".
Ramki -
A fine selection! I fully endorse your good taste (The SG song from Bathrakaali was also a great pick!)
Neel D -
You're right on the mark. Those days I'd await the release of a Visu film just to see if VJ had a solo in it! Moongil Ilai Kaadugale is a classic from S-G. VJ is top-notch in this solo, like always? :-)
Visu also directed Raja Thanthiram (Visu, Karthik, Sulakshana) but I don't recall a VJ solo/song in it...Was there one?
I am glad you mentioned Paththini Penn. MSV was in his element here. Just the other day I was listening to the VJ / Swarnalatha duet from that film - Kaalai Varum Sooriyano Ennaalum Theyaadhu - soulfully rendered by both singers. Ulagengum Nam Veedu tops my list from PP.
Amma Pillai also had a soft, mellow duet by VJ / Mano: Malligai Pookka Mannavan Paarka Iththanai Kaalamaa. MD was CB?
a beautiful solo by VJ..
One of the best solo by VJ
thanks ramki
NeelD, Naaz, rajeshkrv
-I'm glad to see you all liked the song
Pick #142
http://tfmpage.com/stream/songs/welcome_ipev.rm
Song: welcome hero
Film: indru pol endrum vaazhga
Singers: PSuseela, TMS, BSSasirekha
Lyrics: pulamaipithan
Music: MSViswanathan
A catchy song, quite popular in VB. The lines were funny and for a primary school kid it was the 'appadi podu' of 70s. Like most of the catchy songs this one too faded from our memories.
Who was MGR's pair - radha saluja or bindiya goswami? I think MGR started the trend of bringing , what dinakaran likes to call 'mumbai azhagigaL', to TF. Did RS ever act in hindi films??
I believe it is Radha Saluja! I remember watching this movie as a kid and vaguely remember Anbukku naan adimai song where MGR walks around with an aatukutti, I think. I also remember the climax where MGR rescues Vijayakumar from a fire.
aarsi: It IS radha saluja.. How can you go wrong when it comes to heroines?:)
Ramki: Are you sure that this song was popular among kids? :)
Other songs in this movie:
anbukku naan adimai
pudhumaip pengaL..VJ and chorus
idhayththilirundhu idhazhgaL varai..TMS and PS
en yoga jaadhagam - Tms and VJ..
JN: puratchi thalaivaroda parama visiriyaakum neenga? :)
rajeshkrv : VJ pattu ungaluku pidiththu irunthaal nitchchayam it should be the best song by her.
ramki : thanks for sakalakala sammandhi song. Somehow, I missed this song earlier.
Ramki, so far I have not heard VJ's solo "sorname sorgame". Nice song indeed.
PArthu Sirikkudhu Bommai (Thirumadhi Oru Vegumadhi) is also a splendid solo by VJ. I guess it was for Kokila (Or Saranya?). Please post here this when you get that.
'Welcome hero' is a different kinda song but not very great. Ladies teasing the hero and he replies in return in later part of the song started ages ago from MAttu kAra vElan etc etc incl Adiye vanitha (SPBalu, PS, SJ) from pookkalai parikkadheergaL.
In this WHero song, I like that junakkuthaa... by the female voices and chorus.
I think IPEVazhga has one SPB solo????
Was there any song for V.Nirmala who acted Vijayakumar's pair?
Radha Salooja will show a girl after the line "Paris London sendru
vandha peNNunga"... appappa azhaho azhagu. ThAnga mudiyAdhu
In that TMS+PS duet, MGRholdingRS, ade ade.. indha thodai podhuma innum konjam veNumA (Ramba ellam phoo phoo)
Ramki -
Eves' Teasing first thing in the morning! A fun pick!
Regarding Radha Saluja:
She is a grad from the renowned (now defunct?) Poona Film Institute.
Her claim-to-fame film is Do Raha (Two Paths) which featured her with Shatrughan Sinha and Anil Dhawan. This was remade into tamizh as "AvaL" *ing Vennira Aadai Nirmala and Srikanth. (Andha Kaalaththu "A" Padam!) The poster for this film was considered tres risque those days!
RS's other hindi films that I recall are Saza-e-Maut (Death Sentence) a quiet thriller, and first directorial venture of Vidhu Vinod Chopra of "Mission Kashmir" fame. RS was very good in this film (she played a defense attorney.) Her co-star was Naseeruddin Shah, also a FTII grad. Jungle Mein Mangal was another fun film in which she starred opposite Kiran Kumar.
Bindiya Goswami in a tamizh film? That's news to me. The other "bambaai" import jodi for MGR was Zarina Wahab in Navaraththinam.

JN the song is catchy..kids dont care about lyrics. Last year when i visited india my nephews were singing 'dhimsu kattai hai hai' without any inhibition:)
Naaz thanks for RS details
SN23 :) paarthu siirikkudhu bommai is for kokila
