I don't think a cultural phenomenon such as Gounder can be explained away in a single simple event of that sort. It was a tidal wave that was waiting to happen and would have found an occasion no matter what. He satisfied a demand for a type of humour that existed out there but remained unfulfilled due to social mores. Nothing succeeds like success and he developed en masse a taste for what he was dishing out. Even in the context of the time of his rise it would be impossible to see his start as 'filling the gap' of SuruLi. His style was a unique monolith and could have existed alongside anyone else.
