Well I was rewatching "Vaidegi Kaathirunthal" the other day.
Always remember "rasathi unnai" as the "famous" song from this movie. Upon rewatching though, I think the "Indraikku" song is what I would choose as the favourite. Particularly like the gradual layering of instruments, voice, then percussion, during the introduction.
Yes I too thought the same thing, until one day I heard "Indraikku" sung by Vani on some song program and only when I went back and searched for the song did I recognize its from the same movie. I think I overplayed "alagu malar aada" and so I will need to give it some time again to realize its charm.Quote:

Then went off to do some lazy google researching that infomed me about the raaga of the song - sarasaangi. I dont know much about the raaga and its intricacies, but many google sources spoke about the ability of the raaga to pull the tugs of the heart by the raaga. Which led me to the last point in the journey (for the day) - All sarasaangi songs by Raaja in thiraipaadal.
What a Treat!!!!!!!
There you go for a solid 2 hours (counting twice that you are gonna hear these songs).
http://www.thiraipaadal.com/playlist...ngi%20&lang=en
As usual with ilaiyaraaja, the has mostly used the raaga for lighter situations, romance etc., instead of using the raaga's innate quality to mellow down the heart and the cherry on top of the cake is "Endrendrum aanandhamE" - a club song in sarasaangi - which is a surprise if you count in the reactions from the www and youtube.
On that topic, there are two other songs worth noting from that same movie. "Nalam Vaazha" and "Ellorukkum Nalla Kaalam". Both very contextual songs with lovely lyrics and composition. "Marupadiyum" is a great example of a director getting the most of the MD in terms of film-appropriate songs, but then, thats expected of Balu Mahendra.
Marubadiyum - all are GEMS..
My pick is - aasa adhigam vechu - SJ
Wat a compositiion............
Sarasangi - my most favourites are
1. Meenama meenama -
2. Malligayiae malligaiyae thoodhaga po
Ragathoda azhagai - romba nalla exhibit panni irupar indha 2 padalgalil........
especially, malligaiyae
each and every instrument has kamagam for the perfect result for this raagam.....
Flute's punctuation is amazing....... Thanks to HIM.........
Singers - Excellent job by them.....
solla marandhuten - Violin - Extraordinary notes for Sarasangi
chorus are - also in the raaga mood.........
Jaiganesh
you have got a musical brain then...nandha en nila is madhuvanthi / dharmavathi - it is not surprising that you dived to 'ellorum sollum paattu' in Sarasangi, as Sarasangi, Dharmavati and Chakravakam are all part of one grahabedham faimily - that is, when the aadhara sadjam is shifted, sarasangi yields dharmavathi / chakravagam.
check this out - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graha_bedham
oh!!!

As raagas (hubber) wonders, it is just 7 notes, but how various threads are pulled together and colored differently to give divergent musical patterns is certainly stuff of magic !!
Listening to the songs of 'Akka'. What tunes!!! First I must express my thanks once again to Rajasaranam who dug up this treasure. As Rajasaranam one said, "Raja has understood Akka better than the director of the movie"!!! Very true words indeed. Though the orchestration is modern, Raja keeps the essence of her sayings intact. The way he tunes "enagekayya" is top class. Starting off like a siddar padal, 'nandavanthil or andi' he then goes on to put his own stamp on the song, which also reflects the philosophy of Akka Mahadevi. Wonderful effort.
To watch and listen to this song, here is the upload of Rajasaranam:

If you read and understand Tamil, you should head to this blog post of Rajasaranam to get the meaning for these songs. Great job done by RS.

Very nice song.
Thanks for the 'Bhoomi Geethe' link Jai. Was searching for it earlier. Looks like someone has loaded it only recently. Unfortunately it doesn't have the visuals, which are very good. Wonderful song. Infact every song from this movie is a gem.
Yes. The ending flute of 'indraneela' is superb and when you watch it with the visuals, it is even more striking.
Hey Usha :DQuote:

funny whenever I think of Soundarya I actually am reminded of the duet "Nenjukule Innarendu" song also with Karthik :)
It's so cute the lyrics travel well along with the beat =) The flute dances along and the violin leaps along like a rushing stream
The part when SPB sings and the flute answers...so sweet!

Thiruththeril varum silaiyo -a good old melody
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRXpc...eature=related
Wow Raj. Thanks for the youtube link. I have never heard that song before!!! Lovely melody. Sometimes I am happy that I was not in Chennai during the 80s. This is helping me discover some lovely melodies like this now :D
Current listening to 'indha ammanukku' and 'kathudadi raakozhi' from "Deiva Vaaku'. While 'valli valli' is the more famous song, these two songs are extremely energetic. They were introduced to me by our fellow hubber equanimus. My thanks to him.
raj_musing - Lovely song, lovely location, all good except for KRV's outfit in the second half of the song  <dig>Somehow that keeps coming back anytime I hear about the song. Some horror scenes cannot be erased from your memory</dig>Quote:

I'm listening to Oh Intha Ezhai Geetham from Devan on my new sound system enjoying the grandeur of the orchestration. Sung with perfect emotion by the Maestro. I like those songs regarding the social anger from IR, these are kind of the precursor to the Gaayam-2 songs.
thiruthEril varum silai.
Never tire of rehashing a joke on this:
KRV looks more like silai varum thEr than thEril varum silai in this song.

rajkumar,
Yes. 'valli valli' is the pick. I had also listened to only that earlier. Do listen to these two songs. You won't be disappointed.
Valli valli ena vandhan - Greatest pick of IR..
Sivaranjani and Mohanam raagathai - paint panni irupar... Raja..
Sivaranjani and mohanam - shades like a kalaidascope.
Beautiful rendition of IR and SJ.........
Sokkunukku Vacha Sundariye from Kaaval Geetham

Attached to this song with very first listen
SPB's voice is too good...
Opening didn't allude to how the song would go until the humming part...sweet duet
Que,
Thanks for the nice pick.
SPB and SJ - ivanga rendition - paalil vizhundha pazham madhiri.,....
edhanala - edhuku sweet nu , pirichu parka mudiyadha madhiri
dhUrathil nAn kaNda - nizhalgal
@
vennellO gOdhari andham - sithAra
Latter got a natl award for S Janaki.
The passages from
kAdhal enum gItham pAdi urugum
oru bEdhaiyAna mIra
to
aadum kAtrilE pudhu rAgam thOndrumO
The way in which the swaras escalate, twist, turn - will make MSV proud.
kAdhal enum gItham pAdi urugum
oru bEdhaiyAna mIra
This line reeks of dhaabam and the helplessness of untold love
vELai varum bOdhu vandhu kAkkum
karam kAkkum endru
vINai mIttum dEvi uLLamE...
Hope springs eternal- and so does the tune
thIrAdha AsaiyOdum
thALadha dhAgathOdum
kAlai mAlai pUjai seidhum
kEtkavillaiyA?
Swara Escalation that I was talking about. A demanding change in the voice and the tune - how the hell can you ignore my intense devotion. That last kEtkavillaiyA literally stands up and questions
kanavu pOla vAzhvil endhan...kavalai yAvum mAra vEndum
half-request, half-demand
kanavu pOla vAzhvil endhan...kavalai yAvum mAra vEndum
Now, escaclation of voice and tune - half-demand, half-request - not the change in order
irakkamum karuNaiyum unakkillaiyO?
again, a festering, accusing question
nALum enai ALum thuNai nIyE ena vAzhvEn
Ultra escalation in the swaras now. This is a statement of intent. Heck, I worship you and I shall. Try stopping me...
maRavEn, maRavEn, maRavEn
Further accelaration. Final Declaration
un ninaivugaL en manadhinil
uRavin perumai maRavEn
varum dhinam varum adhil
uRavugaL kalappadhum oru sugam
Definitive, adamant, no-holds-barred
Now, having declared intent, longing, frustration, angst, yearning, there is the relief of having vented and the tune takes a slow detour.
vAnamum mEgamum pOlavE....
vAnamum mEgamum pOlavE....
nIndhiya kAlangaL Ayiram
reminiscience of what was - reflective with a wistful sigh and the tune takes a detour that does capture this
mEgam kalaindha vAnil thanimai
indru nAn kaNdadhum uNmaiyE..
Wistful Sigh
dhinam azhaithEn....prabu unaiyE...
A desparate, feeble reiteration of the plea - the beauty is the plea is reiterated but having vented a long plea just now with intensity, this is a feeble one
Adum kAtrilE pudhu rAgam thONdrumO..
resigned acceptance and a feeble hope...
..bridge to the pallavi.
Tour-de-force of a song and paints an emotional landscape with mind numbing details - just the sort of music that I like and relish.
Interestingly, the telugu song, OTOH, suddenly loses steam near the end and the some of the rapturing detours in the last are not retained.
While S Janaki got the NA for the telugu version, I am astounded at the tamil version which actually is a longer, more rewarding one with additional tune bursts.
Heck, this is what I listen to music for - drain me emotionally and make me live through the emotional capture of a heart frozen in time.
And that aspect, and when I say this it is not a typical fanboy statement in this case, Only IR Fossible
BTW, I havent listened to the song physically for some time. Just mind-la recapture paNNinadhukkE Emotional Drain Agi pOchu - Raja
Aiyyoo Sureshji, Iam nowhere close to being a KRV fan. But Iam still ok with that saree clad , yet agile and "maadern maami" in her , running up and down the streams and mountains all for her putthar , for the evergreen “mazhai varuvadhu mayilukku”. But “thiru theril varum malaiyo ? ” !!! Iam blessed to have not seen the video till date and all you guys have said enough to last for a life time.Quote:

Yeah, the song overwhelmed me suddenly. I dont even remember how it started playing in my mind all of a sudden today.
Oh I love these idle pleasures - so glad to have such songs securely stored in corners of the mind and bursting forth spontaneously all of a sudden. Recently, I haven't been listening to much music physically . Somehow, I seem to have reached a stage where I yearn for no more from IR. It seems like he has filled me enough with music that I dont even need to listen physically to please myself anymore. I don't mind sounding like Abbas in Padayappa - What a man!
Plum,
Great write-up!
Plum,
Looks like we are all getting old and very predictable now :D
I can understand how you feel. Sometime I also get tired when I hear an hitherto unheard album and there are many gems in there. When will we finish? is the question I keep asking myself. Then I relax a bit and start digging again. Atleast I am sure treasure is guaranteed :)
The song is a masterpiece and plum has provided a wonderful perspective on that. The swara transition - I would not know much about that, but from an extreme layman's point of view, it took me 3 to 4 times to understand the full song. coz everytime I heard that song, it sounded different to me - like a chameleon among songs and it continues to evolve (atleast for me). It is a pity that it was not picturized in the movie and went and joined the ranks of puththambudhu kaalai - immortal but never born on screen.Quote:
