Of course no comparison with Rajini, whatsoever. அதுல இருவேறு கருத்துக்கு இடமில்லை.
Lalettan has some flourishing business in the Trivandrum area and acting is not his fully-committed profession, per se! hence he is laid-back when it comes to honing his allround skills as an actor - however, he has that spontaneous, natural talent, which when exploited properly can give us a vanaprastham etc etc!
as for most mallu stars, guess they love their puttus + beef + aviyals + meen porichhadhu + rice so much that they simply dont have time for working out in the gym!
Kamal had to retain many of the Sivaji Ganesan era/style of overt histrionics keeping in mind that his audiences have already been pre-conditioned to such stuff - so chappani was brilliant and at the same time, the body language was just slightly overdone - or else, our makkals wud say "yenna nadikkavey illai ?"! there were understated acting patches under KB and also non-KB films leaving out the mindless masala films of the 1980s (that Kamal did as probably 'senjotru kadan')! but post Nayagan, Kamal became a different beast altogether - for instance, watch 'Sathya' - his reactions to his stepmom's insults, often without a single word spoken - i could perceive the hurt in Sathya's eyes! (IR's bgm took care of the rest!) - there is one particular scene where Sathya goes to meet his dad at his workplace and witnesses him being abused/insulted by his boss! and when his dad mentions abt Sathyas unemployed status and pleads to give some more time until his son gets a job, the camera pans on kamal's face for just a few seconds, and those expressive eyes do more than enough to convey a combination of guilt + helplessness + frustration + sadness!! wow! i dont recall any of Kamal's earlier movies pre-Nayagan having such subtle emotiveness in them!
Lal comes from a different school of acting, where over-the-top acting has never been in vogue - call it the culture, the region etc etc, but thats how things are over there in mallu land - his acting has been naturally understated right from the beginning - if Lal did a chappani, it would have been a very different take on the character that mallus cud have easily related to! of course, if Kamal were to have done a chappani post-Nayagan, it would have been different from the original chappani as well!
"இங்க 20 வருஷதுக்கு மேல ஒரு ஆளை விட்டுவைக்க கூடாது. அதான் நாயகனுக்கு முன்னாடி ிருந்த அந்த பையனை நானே கொன்னேன். இன்மேல் அவனை வெச்சிகிட்டு காலம் தள்ள முடியாது" - Kamal Haasan in an interview
lal is like Jesudas and kamal is like SPB
