Today is the birthday of the Original Dream Girl of Bollywood, Hema Malini. She is an actress, director and producer, Bharatanatyam dancer-choreographer and, a politician. Making her acting debut in Sapno Ka Saudagar (1968), she went on to appear in numerous Bollywood films, most notably those with actor and future-husband Dharmendra and with Rajesh Khanna. Hema Malini was initially promoted as "Dream Girl", and in 1977 starred in a film of the same name. During this period, she established herself as one of Hindi cinema's leading actresses, noted for both her comic and dramatic roles, her beauty, and her accomplished classical dancing.
Here are some of my favorite songs featuring Hema Malini.

Parasakthi (1952)(Tamil), the first movie with Sivaji Ganesan in the lead, was released on this day. I watched it in early 1953 when I was in 5th form or 10th standard.
The movie has at least one song borrowing a Hindi tune. Here is the Hindi song from Sunhre Din(1949) :
Maine Dekhi Jag Ki Reet...

Here is the song from Parasakthi:
ill vaazhvinile oLi yetrum deepam nam kaadhal deepam...

Parasakthi is a classic worth watching even now. I bought a copy of the movie when I visited India a few years back.
Very rarely we hear movie songs by classical musicians. Here is one by Kishori Amonkar in Drishti:
Megha Jhar Jhar Barsat Re..................

The raga is Megh Malhar.
A few days back Ragadevan announced the passing away of Manna De with a link to the article in The Hindu.
May his soul rest in peace.
The article mentions Ram Rajya and Mashaal and also a song from Mashaal. Here is that song.
Upar Gagan Vishaal Neechche.............

I posted a few of his songs earlier.
RD has opened a new thread on Manna De. Please visit that thread for more on Manna De and his songs.
