At that time, he has not left DMK. I think if he were to do the role, he'd come into flak with his own party people. Remember, when he dressed up as Lord Muruga for one of the songs, he came under criticism from DMK people?
Plus, he would have been too old to play Christ, even though he still looked good. He had always used Christ, alongside Bhudda in his songs (Buddhan Yesu Gandhi). But it would have been interesting to note how he would have portrayed Christ. Would it have been performance oriented or MGR-istic? We will never find out.
Aaaaand....here's the worst part. The fans, then, would not be able to accept the climax, even though there is resurrection. The last time MGR died on screen, it was havoc!
But still, it would have been a milestone in his career.
Groucho,
I heard another reason. At that time ,there was a setiment (rumour or not,I am not sure)people who act as christ in movies and dramas dies soon after that .
Joe, I think if you put all those rumours together, acting as Christ is a no-no. And MGR is definitely not the kind of man to believe in those 'sentiment. If he wanna do it, he'd do it, no matter what. Look at USV. It could have just died out, he wanted to do it and bloody hell he did it!
On Christ, I think he would have made calculations and decided that it is not worth the effort. He was at the peak of his political career (before the clash with MK, of course) and this may be a risky move, considering that it will be a religious-oriented movie. He had always moved away from acting in those kind of movie, thus earning love and respect from fans of all religion. It's okay to play a christian character; but to play Christ himself may divide his fans. Or so, I think.
By the way who is USV //sorry for dig//
Groucho,
I don't think any problem seen from his partymen then ,since I have seen photos of MK with MGR on this movie launch
I don't think so ..NT acted as Siva .Did it divide his fans ? No .I am good example.I rate Thiruvilayadal is one of the greatest movies, which made me more NT fan.Quote:

See , in many of his movies, the villain will be made to realize his sins / mistakes and will apologise to MGR before he gets taken away by the Police :)
So, we can expect the same treatment here also.
I shudder to imagine what could have happened to the theatre screens if they had shown the Jesus ( MGR ) as dead in the end.
The screen would have been dddddddddddddduuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrr
Forget it. I think in the early 70s MGR wanted to play different roles ( with less number of fight scenes ) to suit with his advancing age. Mind you, he was 53 in 1970 when USV was made.
See, he tried Naan en pirandhen - you know the story well.
Also Pallandu vazga can be categorised in the same league.
So probably, even Jesus must have been such an attempt by MGR to move gradually to character roles and say goodbye to movies
Anbe vaa was another example ( movie sans fights )
