Music4ever, I am "cut-pasting" from what I wrote in the VJ chronolgy, while dwelling on the lovely VJ solo' Thamizh vendhan Pandiyanin angam' from Ananda Bhairavi-1978.
Rangasami Ramanujam is the younger brother of Rangasami Parthasarathy (of Oriental Records fame). Before settling in the U.S. and embarking on a flourishing business in marketing music, Parthasarathy had composed memorable music for films like Magadhalanaattu Mary, Kalyana Mandapam, Avan Piththana, Paalmanam and Kalyana Oorvalam.
Ramanujam was born the last of five children and grew in a household where music was loved and nurtured. Unfortunately, he could not be as successful as his illustrious brother. Ananda Bhairavi was his first film, and he gave a brilliant account of himself. His next film was Annapparavai-1980. Annapparavai had that
spellbinding SPB solo-Ponnenbatho poovenbatho. MVs Gopala-yen sir became an instant hit. SJs Aadi padhinettu was another catchy number.
Ramanujams next film was the MGC Sukumar- Vanithasri starrer Aval Oru Kavariman, which doesnt seem to have been released. The film had some good songs like Pallavai naan paada(VJ) and Poonthendral kaatraaga poonjolai vandaaga(PS, Jolly Abraham?). Another stillborn film for which Ramanujam wasted his efforts
was Puththampudhunayagan. I have heard that in the aftermath of MGRs demise, Ramanujam brought out a cassette on the Puratchi Thalaivar, which did brisk business. Ramanujam has several devotional albums to his credit.
All the songs in Ananda Bhairavi are truly memorable- Umayavaley Mariyamma, varam tharuvaai Mariyamma in the great S Varalakshmis brigha-laden tenor is an aural treat. And while Sirithaai- andha sirippil oru mogam is an all-time favourite SPB-PS delight, Kodi kodi ennam adhu kondu vandha sondham is a breezy TMS-PS duet.

Saravanan....I am hoping that u did a decent job at the office today........:-)And thanks to you and Rebby for that lyrics and the class write up on Ramanujam.
BTW I had the very same memories particularly on Radio Ceylon. Right from 7:00 AM it used to be a treat, starting with Pongum Poompunal....Saravanan gnabakam irukka????? Some of the fantasic morning songs included Saptaswaram Punnagaiyil Kandaen(SPB/VJ from Nadagame Ulagam), Vaa Ponmayile(SPB from Poondalir)....the list is endless. I have associated morning with these songs!!!!! One more song which I had previously posted on this thread but couldnt get the film name was the classic
Engey Unnai Kandaal Looda Nenjil kondattam(SPB/SJ)....Konjam film name sollunga.Would luv to hear this song ....:-(
Some of the KJY songs which I have permenantly associated with Ceylon Radio are:
Gangai Nadhi Oram Raman Nadandaan(KJY/VJ Film??)&
Eriyile Oru Kashmir Roja
There used to be the fantasic Sunday Spl programs...peru marandupochu..compered by K S Rajah... a top ten song list...I still remember the Sippi Irukkudu song being No 1 for weeks no end!!!!!!
I am now lost in that mist of time.......and as u put it right why at all did we grow up????????There now I hear the faint strain of SJ and malaysia singing..
Malargalile Aaradhanai
Maalai neram..............

Nadagame ulagam! Ah, memories! This was the 1st film I saw, dragged along with a bunch of protesting kids to see the hulk of K R Vijaya doing serious damage to our car's hood (one of our cars had gone 'shooting' to Ooty, and to go in the same car to the theatre was someone's warped notion of social status) in a dance sequence. Just for a nanosecond appearance of our crusty white ambassador..
As you can see, my initiation into the world of cinema was anything but memorable. Worse was to follow - 'aattukkara alamelu', 'varuvan vadivelan', 'annan oru koyil', 'benz vasu'... Sensing all this was turning me senile and movie-phobic and that I deserved a better introduction to cinema, my uncle took me to see 'Elippathayam' on a 1st day show at Quilon that had me sprinting at the sight of him for several months since.
Sorry folks for the intrusive digression, you're doing a wonderful job bringing back some cherished memories... keep it flowing..

Naaz,
1. Is it not "parangi pazham pazhutha pazham" or the order you mentioned? anyway aedhO oru pazham :-)... Naaz, I think the dance was by Jayamalini Or is it "Nilavu neram..."? Thalai mudi narachu pochu Naaz :-((
Though am mad after PS's voice, I literally hate this song... not just too much double meaning song, it did not come out well for me to say WoW :-(
2. "Anbu Megame": A small note on this. Engamma Sabadham came out when Jayachitra was at peak and she was lovely in the song seq. In her very early "malarum ninaivugaL" of Madras DD, she chose this song highlighting that it was one of the early bird songs to promote "slow motion" techniques of film gimmicks. She and Sivakumar formed a lovely pair, I believe. Fyi, yesterday "AlaigaL", a popular mega serial in Sun TV got over with "subam". JC was in one of the main roles as "Savithriamma". She still maintains good acting talents with expressions but amamamamamaaa her figure... Thaanga mudiyalada saaami (in Koundamani's language) :-))
3. In Pallandu vazhga, for the same heroine Latha, 3 different singers sang PS, VJ and TKK, but KJY was retained for MGR in all the duets, if am correct.

The film is Anbukku Naan Adimai, with Rathi performing some roadside show to distract the crowd from Ranjnikanth's insane plots. In the same film, there was another PS song:

Pallandu Vazhga was a slightly cheapened remake of Do Aankhen Baarah Haath. Usual MGR, Neraiyya Latha :-)

Wasn't ILU Sujatha from Vidhi? Mohan / Poornima and Sujatha? Music was SG, I think? Or am I confusing it with some other film?
Imayam Kandaen was BSS, I am pretty certain. Mayagugiral is VB, you're right.
-
Subbu (@ 216.*) on: Mon Jun 2 02:02:19 EDT 2003
Naaz, Surya is correct. "sujatha.. ILU" is from Kotteswaran magaL. I think the music was by Chakravarthi (famous telugu MD). Cast was Sivakumar and ShankarabaraNam Rajalakshmi along with Sowcar and Thengai forming a suspicious pair leading to lots of comic scenes. The film had another duet by SPB and PS besides "Sujatha..". In SPB+SPB voices, there was one more "unai naan ariven enai nee arivai..." a lovely duet.
-
Naaz (@ 24.8*) on: Mon Jun 2 02:20:41 EDT 2003
Thanks for clearing my doubt, Subbu. I think I confused it with some song in Vidhi which I vaguely remember....It had a similar "I love you" aspect perhaps? I remember the phrase written in BOLD letter on the beach and Mohan and Poornima dancing around it...adhanale than kozhappam-nnu nenaikiraen.
Looking back on Surya's post, I am sure she is right about Kodiswaran Magal. Did this film come right after "Sujatha" (Nee Varuvai Ena...) which also had Rajalakshmi? Everything seems familiar and vague at the same time :-)
-
Subbu (@ 216.*) on: Mon Jun 2 03:05:00 EDT 2003
Naaz,
In my release-list (hope this is correct), "Koteeswaran magaL" under 1981, "Sujatha" under 1980, whereas "Vidhi" is under the year 1984 !!!!
Naaz,
Day-before yesterday, I listened to the song from Savithri (1980), a Menaka-Somayajulu's brother starrer. It was non other than "Vazhdhaal unnodu vaazhndirupen endru vanam pugundhaaL seethai" sung by VJ.
Such a great song with superb punches. Few examples:
- aazh kadal aanaalum aayiram aanalum avar avar vidhi padi ye
- InbamO thunbamo veLiyinil illai.. idhyathil uruvaagidum (correct words???)
- Mangalam kuraiyaamal manjaLum azhiyaamal vazhvadhu nalam-allvaa (excellent extension of laya by VJ...)
- maNa vinai naaL (wedding day !!!) andru vediyar palar sollum mandiram adhu allavaa...
Though Savithri had to marry an old man, who can never be match & in sync with her beauty, youthfulness etc etc, she says "I have to live with what I am", that too without any crib and whoel-heartedly.. I guess Vaali wrote the lyrics.
Sathiyamaaga solgiren... I just became emotional when I was listioning to this... Lyrics, Music (very simple by MSV), Rendering with such an involvement and the song seq with Menaka's simple actions are the culprits to make my eyes wet :-)
I should have posted this in VJ thread... but good things can be said anywhere... :-)

Vazhndhaal Unnodu is a beautiful song. Simple and sublime at the same time. MSV and VJ also gave us "Naan Padikkonde Iruppaen" (first version) which was along similar lines. Meaningful lyrics and expressive singing. Thanks for reminding me!
Surya -
My apologies. (He He He! I will not forget now!:-)
-
Subbu (@ 216.*) on: Tue Jun 3 00:29:54 EDT 2003
I have a bit different opinion on "naan paadi konde iruppen" and "Vazhndhaal unnodu".
The "Sirai" song, was in very good of the heroine Lakshmi and she has been enjoying every day in her life with her partner Prasanna.
Whereas Menaka (Savithri) was so unlucky to get married to an old man with whom... what kind of life she can enjoy? But she still accepts that life and this song comes out with a bit virakthi but somehow accept and live upto her commitment.
If you again listen to the Savithri song, you will see the difference. And we are so fortunate to listen to that kind of portray of expressions in that song.

I agree wtih you. The situations in both films were entirely different as you point out.
I was only pointing out "expressive" singing in both the solos. Vazhndhal and Naan Padikkonde are both meaningful songs, with minimal orchestration, and both depend on the singer to "emote". It was this "emotion" in the rendition which I was emphasising. Not the film or the situation.
Yes, MSV-VJ team gave us many good solos and memorable songs. I can add my voice to the "fortunate" chorus - we are lucky to have been TFM listeners during the best period!
