Oru Yathra Mozhi was done to salvage the producer VBK Menon. He was the one who produced Chithram. He had started a movie with NT and Lal and the direction was by Rajiv Nath [another good director from the Mallu filmdom].
He had taken a bold theme as the subject. Here NT was the father and Lal his son. A very affectionate father and son. As fate would have it father is diagonised with a life threatening illness. More than the illness, the sufferings he undergoes is more taxing for the son, which leads to a situation where mercy killing is considered. The effects it has on the relationship formed the crux.
But for reasons best known to the producer, this project got dropped and after a year or so in its place this Priyadharsan written, Prathap directed movie came out [1997 July].
Though as you said it is not earth shaking, it was a like a fresh air.
