There is a short anecdote in this week's Bhagya magazine written by K. Krishnan, Coimbatore, the crux of which is as below:-
MGR was invited to officiate the opening of a memorial statue of the late Kalaivaanar N.S. Krishnan. After placing a grand garland around the statue MGR proceeded to give a short speech but was stopped short of it as he was choking with emotion. As it is well known that MGR learned the meaning of philanthropic from Kalaivaanar when he was still budding as a star. MGR then took leave from the crowd by just waving a farewell sign and walked towards his car. Around this time there was a commotion and MGR turned back to see a young lad aged 19 years almost being manhandled by an angry mob. MGR stopped the mob and took the lad to his side and asked him the reason for committing such a daring act in public. Yes, the lad stole the garland just put by MGR and was about to scoot off when he was caught. The lad explained tearfully that his mother, a household servant, just died and he being penniless decided to steal this garland to place it as a wreath for his departed mother's body. MGR, then cautioned the mob and asked them to refrain from beating him. He also reminded the crowd that Kalaivaanar was a generous person while alive and even in his death he is still the same as the garland was meant for him but will serve a worthy purpose. The crowd understood MGR's philosophy. The young lad was a given cash by MGR to conduct a decent funeral for his mother.
