saradha mdm, ofcourse I would but know only a fraction of what you do :-) . However I thought those 2 were the peak in terms of Devika looking good. I missed paava mannippu though, where both were at their best-looking phase.

A very underappreciated movie. I really like that movie...not that I have anything against Navarathiri....Quote:

landmark in Tamil cinema Andha Naal
Andha Naal created history in Tamil cinema as the first movie sans song, dance or stunt sequence and is still being talked about. It is impossible for any producer to even dream of making such a movie today! The emerging Indian movie mogul AV. Meyyappan created history when he produced Andha Naal, which was less than 12,500 feet long, while most Tamil films of that day were 15,000 feet and above. The film was written and directed by the multi-faceted S. Balachandar who later attained fame as a veena player. The dialogue was written by ‘Javert’ Seetharaman and the film was photographed by talented lensman Maruthi Rao.
Many people to this day are under the impression that the film was an adaptation of the Akira Kurosawa classic Rashomon. Interestingly, the Japanese film was released in theatres in India soon after it created history in the international movie circuit and in the first international film festival held in India in 1952, thanks to the efforts of Pandit Nehru. The Japanese film was a brilliant narration of a single event seen through the eyes of the protagonists, each at variance with the other about what was the truth. However, Andha Naal, though bearing thematic resemblance to the Kurosawa classic, was actually an intelligent adaptation of a British movie Woman in Question made by Anthony Asquith (son of the British Prime Minister Lord Asquith), one of the three British movie maestros, the other two being Carol Reed and David Lean. Asquith’s film was a flashback on the murder of a woman with several people claiming to be the killer. Andha Naal was about the killing of Sivaji Ganesan by his wife (Pandari Bai, revealed to the audience) and many people claiming to be the killer. This film won a Central Government Award, and critical and public acclaim.
However, it did not fill the coffers of Meyyappan who understandably never thought of making a similar film later. Balachandar had an assistant in the directorial department, young and talented who later emerged as a successful filmmaker, Muktha V. Srinivasan.
The cast consisted of Sivaji Ganesan as a traitor, leaking secrets to the Japanese during the Second World War, Pandari Bai as his patriotic wife, ‘Javert’ Seetharaman, T. K. Balachandran, Suryakala, Menaka and P. V. Sambandam. Even today after five decades and more, this film sustains interest.
Balachandar, a brilliant technician had acquired vast knowledge of the art of cinema by watching movies from abroad, mostly from Hollywood. He put to good use his acquired skills and talents in this film, especially in the lighting to create mood and character. Sample this: in a sequence the anti-hero (Sivaji Ganesan) is totally in the dark while his abandoned sweetheart is brightly lit to bring about the contrast in the mood and the characters. In Hollywood lingo, it is known as ‘painting with light.’
Remembered for being the first Tamil film which had no dance, song or stunt sequence and for Balachandar’s impressive direction and fine performances by Sivaji Ganesan and Pandari Bai.
RANDOR GUY
Preamble
After the success of his film "New", SJ Surya had advertised his next venture as "BF." This announcement brought protests from many sections of society, one for the suggestive nature of the title and secondly for the absence of Tamil in the title. To mock those who had protested the title, SJ Surya changed the title to Ah Ah (அ ஆ) - you want Tamil, I give you Tamil. Later Ah Aah was expanded to Anbe Aruyire. But there existed a film long before SJ Surya came to the cineworld, with the title....
Amutham Pictures
Anbe Aaruyire
Starring: Sivaji Ganesan, Manjual, Major Sundararajan, Gandhimathi, VK Ramasamy, Sukumari, Nagesh, etc.
Lyrics: Vaali
Music: MS Viswanathan
Direction: AC Thirulokachander
Anbe Aaruyire is a full-fledged comedy, with a simple storyline.
Sattanathan (Major) and Rettai-vaal Ramasamy (VKR), both lawyers, are sworn enemies. Sattanathan's wife is Meenatchi (Gandhimathi) and Ramasamy's wife is Janaki (Sukumari). Saravanan (Sivaji) is Sattanathan's only son while Devi (Manjula) is Ramasamy's only daughter. Manjula moves from Bangalore to Chennai and visits Meenatchi on the sly. She meets shy Saravanan and eventually they fall in love. Pattanaththu maapillaikku bangaloreu ponnu by TMS and LR Eswary is the first song.
Nagesh acts as a counselor Ramesh, and offers advise for every problem for a small fee. :D Saravanan approaches Ramesh who suggests that Saravanan takes out Devi for a romantic movie like Vasantha Maligai. :rotfl2: At the cinema, Ramesh is shocked to learn that Devi is his cousin sister and that he had been encouraging Saravanan to do all kinds of things.
Knowing that Sattanathan will never agree to the union of Saravanan-Devi, counselor Ramesh suggests that Saravanan marries Devi in Bangalore without the knowledge of his parents. Ramasamy agrees with the plan provided that Saravanan stays as Veettu Mappillai. Feeling jittery Saravanan tries to escape and is persuaded to stay on by Devi with malligai mullai poopandhal maanikka ponnunjal (Vani Jayram).
Sattanathan learns of the prospective wedding and immediately flies to Bangalore to stop the wedding. Ramasamy informs Sattanathan that Devi is a major and can decide on her own. ("en kitteyE major paththi pEsuriyaa," says Major Sundararajan  ) Before there can be a "major" war, he allows the wedding, on condition that both the newly weds return with him to Madras.
Back home in Madras, the newly weds are separated! This leads to the dream song kaamadEnuvum sOmabaanamum boomiyil vandhadhu kannE by TMS and PS. Sattanathan and Devi meet in secret and in one sequence a thief breaks into the house. Learning about their secret meeting, the thief takes advantage of the situation and makes bargains with them. This, for me was one of the most hilarious sequences in the entire film. :D un kannil ner vazhindhaal en nenjil udhiram kottudhadi... :rotfl:
The newly weds come up with a plan and accordingly Devi acts sad and exasperated. Sattanathan misreads her sorrow as missing her parents and sends her to Bangalore. :rotfl2: She is to be accompanied by Sattanathan's assistant but at the last minute he falls ill and Saravanan takes his place. Sattanathan places strict instructions on Saravanan's movements. raaja veedhi bavani enbadhu raajanOdu raani varuvadhu.
Ramesh then comes up with a plan to book a room in Chennai for the newly weds.. With Sattanathan thinking that Saravanan is in Bangalore and Ramasamy thinking that the happy couple are in Madras, the comedy is set to explode.
Saravanan and Devi plan to hold thier own wedding ceremony in the hotel, for their satisfaction. The other occupants in the hotel overhear this and alert the owner of the impedding thiruttu kalyaanam. (A fresh set of actors are introduced in the hotel episode: Thangavelu as the owner, Manorama and her husband Mouli as one of the tenants. Also acting in the sequence are VA Moorthy, Mahendran, Loose Mohan, etc.) Saravanan-Devi wed again, as live telecasted by Mouli (yes the same Mouli!) Osaivaraamal naam uravu kolvOmE by TMS and PS.
The entire scene is complicated by the arrival of idol smugglers, Saravanan losing his wallet, an impending drama where the newly weds dress up as Krishnan-Ratha.Back home Sattanathan is shocked with the arrival fo God at his doorstep......!
Watch the comedy that happens next! :D
postscript: After Ah Aah, another film is to be released soon titled, Ah Aah, E, Eee! :banghead:
i have seen this movie several time in the past. i have also seen many akira kurosova's movie including "Roshomon". no doubt that akiria kurasova is a genius. it is a news for me that antha naal is the remake of a british film. AVM chettiyar had guts to make a movie without songs when songs were the back bone of a BO success at the time. Though antha naal is a remake movie, director needs to be appreciated for giving a flawless screen play in indian mileu.
Regarding sivaji's acting, see this below video.

especially between 1:36 to 1:40. he showed a puzzling expression to audiance. he showed villianious expression with hero's dialogue. "naan unna kai vituduvena enna". every part of the face shows an expression. it was an amazing performance from NT who just had 2 years of acting experience in cinema at the time. :2thumbsup:

he smokes stylishly in the movie. :smokesmirk:
Rakesh, Koondukkili on astro vellithirai today at 6pm. :P
"Sattanathan's wife Meenatchi (Gandhimathi) and Ramasamy's wife Janaki (Sukumari) are sisters. Saravanan (Sivaji) is Sattanathan's only son while Devi (Manjula) is Ramasamy's only daughter. "
Doesnt that make Sivaji and Manjula cousins, too? What we call "cousin-brother, cousin-sister" in TN? Wasnt this knot resolved at all in the movie?
 not first cousins, but second cousins. I suppose Ramasamy and Meenatchi were brother and sister.
