Pick #565
Song: kanivudan thirumbiyE pArum
Film: Ezhai Padum Paadu
Music: S.M.Subbiah Naidu
Singer: P.A.Periyanayaki
Lyrics: ?
Year: 1950
P.A.Periyanayaki was one of the famous playback singers in the 40s and 50s. She was a classical singer on stage and also acted in some films in the 40s. One of Periyanayaki's evergreen hits is "aruL thArum dhEva mAthAvE", a duet with Jikki, for the film "Gnanasoundari". Today's pick was also a huge hit in its time.
Considering that Periyanayaki sang playback for Rukmini(Lakshmi's mother) in the film "Srivalli" in 1945, she is one of the earliest playback singers, though not the first. The first playback singer in TFM is Lalita Venkataraman from Mumbai who lent her voice for actress T.P.Rajalakshmi in the film "Nandakumar" produced by AVM in 1938.
"Ezhai Padum Paadu" produced by Pakshiraja Studios in Coimbatore had V.Nagiah in the lead. I have seen at least three different people being credited for the music in this film (S.M.Subbiah Naidu, C.R.Subbaraman and V.Nagiah). May be all three of them contributed. But I settled for S.M.Subbiah Naidu based on an article in The Hindu.
The sisters Lalitha and Padmini, who were only performing dances in films till then, were given big parts to play in this film. And Ragini doubled for V.Gopalakrishnan in a song sequence. Today's pick is for Lalitha, who sings the song while begging on the street for money. This song may be one of the earliest songs to have so many English words in the lyrics.
Part of the statistics in the post was collected off the internet. Thanks to all who contributed.
