I have set my boundaries : Kajal
Kajal Aggarwal, over the years, has made her mark through her many avatars in Telugu and Tamil films and has also tried to make waves in Bollywood with films like Singham and Special 26. Kajal is also a celebrity endorser for a few brands. The actress was in Bangalore to endorse a jewellery product recently. Kajal’s personal style statement is to keep it simple. “I like to wear either a pair of earrings or a neck piece. If they are tiny, I wear them both,” says the actress.
And she says gold is not just a term associated with box-office success. “Why should only gold represent box office success? It can be diamonds too, as they are more valuable,” says Kajal with a sincere smile and further adds, “Anyway, they probably use ‘gold’ as a metaphor when a movie does really well. Though the success of a film is very important, to me personally, I also seek to derive a lot of satisfaction from my role and the craft,” she says.
Currently, she is busy in three industries and is doing two films in Telugu with Ramcharan Teja and Junior NTR directed by Puri Jagannath. She is doing a Tamil film with Dhanush and a Hindi film with Sharman Joshi. “I have been working in Telugu and Tamil films for eight years and for four years in Bollywood. My recent film Thuppaki in Tamil saw me in an extremely glamorous avatar and I had a deglamourised role in the Telugu film Mr Perfect. So the diversity depends on the movie and not the industry,” she says.
Coming to Thuppaki again, the film was remade in Hindi as Holiday starring Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha. Apparently, Kajal was offered the film but she couldn’t take it up because of dates. “I don’t feel sad about not taking part in the remake. I had a great time working with Vijay and Murugadoss in the Tamil version. I have worked with Akshay before and I find him to be a nice person. I am really happy with the kind of films I am doing right now. No regrets whatsoever,” she replies.
Kajal feels lucky to have varied roles in her career and she is happy that filmmakers mostly think of her as a regular young girl, on screen. “They see me as someone a boy would like to take home to his mother, which is good,” says Kajal.
With new actresses coming up almost everyday, Kajal feels dedication and hard work are needed to reaffirm her position in the industry. “Even though we have been in the industry for sometime now, we need to work harder to update our skills. It is always nice to have younger and newer people around and of course it does create a healthy competition. Today’s newcomers don’t need any advice, as they are smart,” she says.
After having established herself in the industry, Kajal doesn't find the need to go beyond her boundaries. I have my limitations and I respect them,” Kajal adds.
The actress signs off saying that she is sure to do a Kannada film if everything falls in place. “I realised I have a huge fan following in Karnataka. Though I have got some good offers, I am not able to accommodate them in my schedule."

"I am obsessive about yoga"-#KajalAggarwal's exclusive interview to filmfare

Sweets is one temptation she inescapably yields to. Blame it on her mother who bakes the creamiest of cakes. Also coming from a Punjabi family, which believes in pampering the taste buds, her mother’s parathas and rajma chawal afford nothing short of culinary ecstasy. And yet, Kajal Aggarwal manages to look fitter than the fittest. It is her dedication towards fitness, which has got her this envious hot bod. Not to forget the mini kitchenette that travels with her across the globe just so that she has healthy and hygienic food at her disposal anywhere and everywhere...
FITNESS FIRST
I was never into sports in school. I enjoyed being on stage instead. I hated PT (Physical Training) in school. But I enjoyed the march past. I was the school captain and lead the school. In college, I became pro fitness. I started doing aerobics. When I was 18, I joined the gym. Ever since, fitness has been an important part of my life. In between I was introduced to yoga. Today, I’m obsessive about it. It’s the best way to stay fit and healthy. I do yoga thrice a week and balance it with weight training thrice a week. When I’m travelling, I carry a yoga mat so that I can do my suryanamaskars wherever I am. I can do more than 150 suryanamaskars at one go. Or else I go for a half an hour run.
VIBRO FUN
I also do vibro training. The vibrations on the step up make the work out 35 times more effective. Initially, it was difficult to balance but now my body is used to it. It helps you gain stability, balance and strengthens your core.
FADS AND FACTS
Thankfully, I never had to lose or put on weight for any role. But around four years ago, I had lost a lot of weight. For some strange reason, I turned vegan. I became obsessive about my diet. Not that I was bulimic or anorexic. Everyone was like ‘Oh God you look skinny! You need to put on some weight.’ But I felt healthy living on juices and raw vegetables. But these are fads. You can’t sustain them for long. But now I’m on a normal diet. I’m neither thin nor overweight. I’m just fine. However, I look up to Deepika Padukone. She’s got a stunning body and can sustain her energy levels.
VEGAN JOYS
I turned vegetarian for health reasons but there was a time when I used to enjoy chicken and fish. I love egg whites but now I replace it with soya. Vegetarian food goes better with my system. Even though there are fewer forms of proteins for vegetarians, they are enough. I have a vegan protein shake, sprouts and dals. I also incorporate fruit and vegetables in my diet and pulses and whole grains like quinoa, amaranth (rajgira) and buckwheat instead of maida, rice or wheat. I avoid dairy products.
SWEET SIN
I don’t drink or smoke. But I cannot avoid sugar. I have a sweet tooth. But I work out harder post my sweet binges. Like I had a chocolate cake last night and ran on the treadmill this morning. Also, I’m a fruit person. During mango season, mangoes satisfy my sweet cravings. I love strawberries, which are anti-oxidants. I also include dates in my diet. I prefer having dark chocolates, which are healthier and high in flavonoids and antioxidants. I try to have jaggery chikki and nuts instead of mithai and chocolates, ‘try’ being the key word here. I don’t believe in fruit juices because that means unnecessary fructose. I prefer vegetable juices instead. I combine celery, cucumber and mint to make a juice or have a spinach cum doodhi juice.
HYGIENE FIRST
I am obsessive about hygiene. My food has to be prepared in a clean manner. I follow a specific diet chart. (Laughs) So I carry a tava (iron plate), chakla, belan (rolling pin), an electric cooker, mixer and grinder wherever I travel. My mini kitchenette travels with me. My mom cooks for me even if we are staying in a hotel. Or my assistant cooks for me. That includes a quinoa and sprout salad and vegetable juices.
FOOD TUSSLE
I’m a Punjabi so undeniably I love food. My grandma makes sure parathas are prepared for breakfast. I also love rajma and chhole bature but I have to stick to fruit and oats instead. When I’m in the South, I’d gorge on idlis and dosas. It’s a challenge to kill my desires. But I treat myself sometimes. I have two binging days in a month where I eat all I crave – be it a pizza or paneer makhani.
