Saravanan
These four short verses by T.V.Rathnam in arangEtram uploaded for you.
Some more details will help others also to enjoy these.
kallArkkum kaRRavarkkum

This is part of the title music.
Pramila's younger sister sings this traditional Thiruvarutpaa by Ramalinga adikaL in the temple.
The audio track in the DVD jumps over 2 lines.
akara muthala
http://as01.coolgoose.com/go/song?id=62432
S.V.Subbiah asks her to sing. "manasu kashtamaa irukkumpOthu pAduviyE. oru pAsuram pAdummA"
seems like the last 2 lines of Arunagirinathar's Thiruppukazh.
pAviyEn kaNda vaNNam
http://as01.coolgoose.com/go/song?id=62435
When Pramila comes home from Hyderabad for Jayasuda's wedding, the whole house is brimming with joy and happiness; she is the one who lost her innocenseand happiness; now deeply immersed in guilt and sorrow. Her sister is studying alone in a room. Pramila is watching over a picture of Lord Shiva, she asks her sister to sing a paasuram."appA manasu kashtamA irukkumpOthellam pada solvArE; ippO oru pasuram pAduviyA?"
That's Pramila's sobbing in the background. When she is singing Pramila just breaks down lying in her lap.
sri mAthA sri mahAyAnjE - slokam
http://as01.coolgoose.com/go/song?id=62437
When the truth about Pramila's profession is blown out, Kamal pushes and throws her out of the house. Senthamarai (Sivakumar's father) comes to her rescue and picks up a fight with Kamal. The younger sister to calm things down, sings this slokam in front of Devi's picture with Pramila and Senthamarai leaving in the background. The camera moves on and captures everyone's emotions.
When seeing this movie you can feel the essence of these verses. so emotionally packed in different situations.
very well sung by T.V.Rathnam. (I can't imagine it is the same TVR who sang "aaLai aaLai paarkkiRaar " in Raththak kanneer.)
Kudos to KB and V.Kumar!
Sathya Kabali tonnes of thanks for the mounathil viLaiyaadum manasaatchiye. This is one of my top fav songs in MSV-Kavignar-KB combo. Excellent lines, wonderful singing. Thanks again.
One more request. Do you have the thogaiyar piece of 'kaadhal siragai kaatrinil virithu'?

Got to catch a buzz...coffee time!
Sathya Kabali,
Thank you for these couplets- My search of many years has ended at last- Thanks to you! I just listened to them right now--and reading your lucid descriptions-- kaatchigalum kann mun arangeruvathuppol irundhadhu! Thanks again for taking the time and trouble!
RR- sorry it should be 'Megangal irundu vandhaal'. In fact, the song starts with a stirring thogayara by the inimitable Seergazhi:
Odi vandhu meetpatharkku
unnmaikko kaalgal illai
Oindhirundhu kettppatharkku
neethikko neramillai
paartha nilai solvatharkku
Paramanukko uruvamillai
pazhi sumandhu selvathindri
ivanukko paathai illai--
Then the pallavi starts:
Megangal irundu vandhaal
adhai mazhaiyenakkolvathundu
manithargal thirundhi vandhaal
adhai pizhaiyena kolvathundo?
A moving song--and among my all-time favourites!
Naaz: Good choice of reminiscences again!
Saravanan: I will not contest your choice in Naan Aanaiyittaal. Probably teh least heard but the most moving piece. In fact, after seeing your posting yesterday I went back and listened to the song and came prepared with the four lines in
the "Thogaiyara" but you beat me to it. Also, thanks for reminding it is penned by Aalangudi Somu. He has also written Piranda Idam Thedi.
Is there a thread on Aalangudi Somu in TFM?
By the way, the song"Kodukka Kodukka" by PS is written apparently by V. lakshmanan. Have you heard of this lyricist? Other songs in Naan Aanaiyittaal: Nalla Velai Naan.., Thai Mel AAnai,
Naan Uyara Uyara...
RR
RR: Vidwan V Lakshmanan is a famed astrologer who is more popularly known as 'Balajosiyar' Lakshmanan. He was a great friend of the late Manian, along with whom he produced MGR films like Idhaya Veenai & Pallaandu Vaazhga. He was also among those who were considered to be in MGRs coterie.
He wrote lyrics for some good songs- The two songs sung by Panigrahi in Aval Yaar-1959: Naan thedum pothu and Kann kaanum minnal thaano were perhaps the first songs he wrote. He was the lyricist for all the songs in S Balachandars Bommai-1964.
Amma endraal paal tharuvaal- Karpooram-1967, Manam oru kurangu and Aruppokkottai machchaan- both Manam Oru Kurangu-also 1967 are other songs by V Lakshmanan that I recall.
There was this song I remembered:
vaazvil sowbhakyam vandhadhu
vandhEn endradhu
thEn thandhEn endradhu
Was it from thoondil meen and music by V. Kumar?
Yes.. it is from Thoondil meen.. Not sure if it is by V.Kumar.
I vaguely remember that the MD was viyajabaskar
...
Yes Music4ever & surya,
MD was indeed V Kumar for vazhvil sowbaghyam vandhadhu from Thoondil meen. It also had ennodu ennennamo adhisayam .

This is a thread that should see more postings on old and rare songs. At least to combat the monotony in DF.
bb: appadi nenachu thaan naan thoosi thatti eduthu pOtten.. appadiyum sathame illai.. :(
bb: I don't know whether you consider it rare, but here is one I like:
eNNi eNNi paarthu manam inbam kondaadudhe
ennai ariyaamal uLLam thuLLi viLaiyaadudhe
eNNi...
konji konji pesi isai kuyil pola paaduven
kola mayil pola vegu aanandhamaai aaduven naan aanandhamaai ...
en kaadhal raajan en naathan koodave en naaLum vaazhuven naan ennaaLum vaazhuven
I think the song is from Vaazhkai. It was released in late forties or early fifties. This was a popular song during my lower secondary school years. The tune is copied from 'chup chup kadu' in Hindi.
Saravanan probably can shed more light!
Yes, Raj, that's a good song from Vaazhkkai (1949/ AVM/ T.R.Ramachandran & Vyjayanthimala). Sung by M.S.Rajeswari, Music by R.Sudarsanam. MSR had a smash hit in 'Un kann unnai yemaatrinaal' from the same film. Lyrics by K.P.Kamakshisundaram.
Saravanan: 'un kann unnai' was very popular among us kids(in those days!) to tease others. I don't remember the whole song. But , it goes like:
mana mevum aasai mohanaa maaraa ikkobam nyayamaa
un kann unnai yemaatrinaal en mel kobam undaavadhen
college padichum payanillai kaarotta therindum payanillai
....
I have been searching for these songs for sometime now.
Vaazhkkai was apparently filmed for the most part in my grandmother's house. I've heard her talk about Vaijayanthimala as the most beautiful girl she's ever seen.
A song that always puts me in a good mood is "nallavan enakku naanE nallavan". It has an excellent rhythm and good beats. Was it one of the "dance floor" songs of that time?
guys,
which movie is this song from....have been running in my mind for a while..it goes something like this
"Athannin nenjukkulley tikk tikk tikk
ammalin kannukkuley bakk bakk bakk"
Senty, 'athanin nenjukkuley' is from the film Revathi-1986. (Suresh, Revathi, Sujatha, Jaishankar). Sung by KJY & SJ. Music by S-G.
Raj- ippothaan gavanichen: lower secondary school in the late 40s?? Sir, you're older than my father :) Its wonderful that you are taking part in these discussions with enthusiasm! Hope you continue to share your memories and knowledge.
'Un kann unnai emaatrinaal' is a great fun song- it goes like this: (there may be a few errors!)
manamevum aasai nathanae
maara ikkovam niyayama?
Mr.Nathan--oh sorry, Mr.Asokan,
un kann unnai emaatrinaal
en mel kovam undaavathen
dadada dadada dadada dadadada
Penngalai geliyaai pesuvathil aasai yen
unmaiyai enni paarkanum
ulaga anubavam undaaganum
punai peyaraalum payanaillai
puththagam ezhuthiyum payanillai
pugazh petradhaalum payanillai
college padithum payanillai
car otta therindhum payanillai
adhanaal--
yosithu nandraai unaranum
ulaga anubavam undaaganum
I vaguely remember there being a TRR version too.
Andha neram poruthirundhaal
nalla anubhavam kidaithirukkum
Isn't this lovely song from Thillu Mullu? There is a song in Ayutha Ezhuthu which somehow reminded me of the above one.
Saravanan: Thanks for the lyrics and the kind words. Actually, I know nothing about movies compared to you. You have helped me a lot in bringing back fading memories! I was too engulfed in 'the rat race' to find time for movies for almost three decades. Now that I am retired I find time for this page and a few threads. I am a regular in paattukku paattu thread where I get teased for my age. But, I feel a lot younger with that crowd. Thanks again for the Vaazhkkai lyric. Hope someday, I will hear from you about Vedhaala Ulagam, Naam Iruvar, Marma Yogi,Dhigambara Saamiyaar and others. Cheers!
Keep up the good work!
Is there a link somewhere for the following song which appeared in the movie Poi Kaal Kuthirai?
Ellam therigiradhu
enakku ellam therigiradhu
mana kaNNukku munnalE
oru kaNNAdiyei polE
azhagu ellAm therigiradhu
I am quite sure it is by Mellisai Mannar.
Surya and others, thanks for the response concerning the thoondil meen song.
I have an old cassette which has songs sung by Thiruchi Loganathan. One of the songs which I like most in that is
"mAnilamE,yindha mAnidarAl vandha mARudhal pAraiyA" vey meaningful and classsy song.
My all-time favorite old song is by 'nadippisaip pulavar' K.R. Ramasamy which is,
"kaNNil thOnRum kAtchi yAvum kaNNE unadhu kAtchiye;
maNNil veezhum kaNNeer veLLam kAdhal nenjin sAtchiyE"
Absolutely brilliant!
M4e: ellaam therinja Saravanan thaan unga poikaal kudhiri keLvikku bathil sollanum..
Guys what movie is this song from...
"Poonnkatreee....
ethu pothummmm.. En udal thendathey
Poradum ellam Poovvai
En manam thalathey"
Its an IR movie mid 90's.This song has two version's one by IR himself.
Senty, its from Padicha Pulla-1989.(Arjun, Seetha). One version is by Mano & Chitra, and the other by IR.
Thanxs sara,i know u will tell it.Can someone here put some question that sara cannot answer :).I remember the movie now.Arjun is a Cow Boy , seetha daughter of manorama is a brahmin i guess.
Was that movie directed by Arjun himself or his brother Kishore? I remember seeing that one. Not a bad movie, I think!
Anybody got the mp3 of the Poonnkatrey song??
i have been humming it all day..but not able to proceed further than the pallavi :)...
It's now probably twenty years since I listened to the lovely song that goes "Kalai magaL Alai magaL Malai magaL moovarum ulavidum raathiri, Navaraathiri". I believe Jayachandran was the singer and MSV was the MD. I was watching a song in the movie "vinnukkum mannukkum" when I remembered the above one. Any idea which movie?
Music4ever, 'kalaimagal alaimagal' is a wonderful JC-PS duet from the film Velli Ratham (1979/ Ashtalakshmi Pictures). The film starred Vijayakumar, K.R.Vijaya, VA Nirmala, S.V.Subbiah, M.N.Rajam and others. Music, yes by MSV. It was directed by Krishnan-Panju.
Thank You Saravanan. I appreciate it. Seems like another age (It is!), the time I used to listen on the radio (Thaenkinnam, virumbikettavai etc).
Poo Maalai vaangi vanthan
pookal illaiyE
What a mesmerizing song. Recently heard it on Sun TV and remembered the eighties. The unforgettable Sindhu Bairavi movie.
nice to see senty and music4ever post back to back :)
Prabhu? Have to catch up with the DFers. I love this thread.
On Maduraiyai Meeta Sundara Paandiyan, I recall two lovely tunes.
1) Thendralil aadum thogaiyai kandEn
mazhai konda megam
En Devadhai amudham sindhidum neram
ini enna naanam, ini enna naanam
2) Amudha thamizhil ezhudhum kavidhai
pudumai pulavan nee
Another JC song, I believe, is the following:
UdhadugaLil unathu peyar ottikondathu
Adhai ucharikkum pothu nenjam thinthikkindrathu
Is this from Thanga Rangan? That was probably two score and more years ago.
Which movie is the following from? (words might be incorrect)
Adi Kanmani
Vanna paingiLi
Chinna poongodi
Ennai paaradi
Indha neram
enna naaNam
Sung by SPB and a female voice (?) I forget. Input from Saravanan would be appreciated.
Music4ever, thanks for reminding me of songs that I had not thought of in quite a while :)
Yes, 'Udhadugalil unadhu peyar' by JC & PS is from Thangarangan (1978/ Jeppiar Pictures). Lyrics by Na.Kamarasan. Music by MSV. The song featured Vijayakumar & Pramila, though Thengai played the title role. Jeppiar followed this up in 1979 with another Thengai film- Porter Ponnusami.
'Adi kannmani' is from Aval Oru Adhisayam (1978/ Suchitra Films). No idea about the actors. The song is sung by SPB & PS, with LR Anjali joining in briefly. Music by Vijayabhaskar.
Saravanan, thanks for your valuable input :) Thanga rangan also had "enga rangan, thanga rangan" as one more number. When you said Porter Ponnusami, I immediately remembered it was by MSV and there was a lively number or two too. I forget them though.
'Adi Kannmani' is a nice number by Vijayabhaskar (also MD for thappu thalangal, I believe).
There was this tune which I used to blare often to the great dismay of my close ones: "Oru rojapoo sirikiradhu, pudhu rajavai ninaikkiradhu". Was it by Chandrabose?
Thanks once again :)
