Murali sir, hats-off to you for your lively & interesting posts which keeps this thread going as usual.
I'm not sure about what exactly happened which made our star hubber's to stay away from this thread....but one thing is definitely for sure....this thread now looks like a deserted Ranganathan street. Hope & wish the festive season begins very soon.
Had a chance to watch " Padikkadhavan" in one of the channels.
Jaishankar comes to NT's office and later recognizes him to be is old buddy. They share some lighter moments and then Jai explains the purpose of his visit. One of his men has committed a crime and he requests NT to get him out on bail.
NT refuses and jokingly says that if Jai admits that it is he who has committed the crime, it is possible to get the man out of jail. When Jai reacts, NT says, " What man, nonsense...".
It is a pleasure to watch NT's demeanour switching over according to the mood. The moment when he gives the suggestion jokingly, he keeps his cool and when he says, " What man......." , it is entirely a new NT that we see there. Master craftsman indeed.

Watched 'Karnan' @Golden Digital , Singapore with my Son .
As NOV mentioned first 15 mins are shaky ,then it is very clear .
Noted few points
- My son (now 6+ ) liked the movie very much ..Infact I noticed that He wiped his tears when Karnan got arrows
- Though I watched many times (Theatres , TV, DVD) ,I felt that current audience should have felt bit impatience for few songs ,which they may not familiar with ..especially the song on valaikappu .
- There were only about 100 people in theatre and i noticed most of them are not local Singaporeans ,but singapore residents from India , most should have seen the movie with theatre experience before ..This opertunity of watching a old NT movie in theatre should be better utilised by local singaporeans , who would have never get such opertunity ,but sadly it is missing . I assume many didn't even know Karnan is screened .
- For the first time ,I have seen very old ladies (should be in 80's) were brought by their families ..they were seen so happy when returning back .
Regarding the movie and NT , Goosebumps in many places especially in last 30 mins .. None like him before and after him.
I too feel that there is not enough promotion. Many of my friends are not aware of the screenings :(

Thillana was my father's favourite NT movie. He had watched it 29 times, all in theatre during the first run. (without counting the subsequent runs in 70s. 80s thanks to family burden his theatre visits for re-runs stopped. ). It may not be much compared to hard core fans here but it still remains a world record in my extended family.
I can't remember the exchanges at all. Still, haven't read your post, it has been a long time since I did. But a wonderful write-up, sir. IppothAn padichen. As you said its a love story, and the enemy to the love affair is none other than Shanmugasundharam himself, his arrogant, and temper.Quote:

I think that I mentioned Thillana Mohanambal as 2nd in my Favourite NT Movie list next to Pudhiya Paravai.
Thillana mohanambal came in the end of second phase of NT's career that is stylised method acting. His 1st phase is Naturalistic style with presentational style of connecting with audience (1952-1960) where as the second phase is Stanilavsky and Stasberg school of stylysed method Acting with Non-naturalistic drama content with representational connection with audience at times obviously contrived,artificial and exaggerated but no doubt that it added depth to most of the larger than life characters and most effective in portraying bizarre way of changing moods with state of mind.(1961-1968).There are few exemptions during this period like Kappalottiya Thamizhan,Iruvar ullam,Motor Sundaram Pillai,and Thillana Mohanambal.
His being the only one among the world actors who can switch contemporary acting,method acting,stylised acting,and period acting with unmatched dramatic versatility with mastery over technical skills ,approach, confidence and showmanship. Just listen only to sound tracks and you will realise that he lived in his voice,that plucks every emotional suggestions from a dialogue . He found emotional sub-texts by infusing life experiences with accumulated wisdom and unblemished emotional core.(Gowravam,Thiruvarutchelver)
If you observe oscar nominations ,same movie finds nomination for 18 awards which goes to prove that good acting is possible with adept Director who knows his theme and content with language of cinema, cinematographer to register the emotional content with right moods, dialogue writer who can get into the mind and heart of all his characters. The dialogue writers who impressed me were Kalaigner (Social,Historical),Sakthi(Historical,Epics),K.S.G (Social),V.Sundaram(Social) , A.P.N(Social,Epic),Javar (Social),Selvaraj(Social). They are far away from contrived,cliched, demostrative and synthetic dialogues of others like Aroor Das,A.L.Narayanan,Balamurugan Etc. Audience sensibities(C centre Devar Fans) restrict our movies to tell me all,Dont show anything visually type.
Thillana Mohanambal is only one of its kind to deviate from all known formulas ,original Tamil Movie with our original story with our own tradition and cultural ethos.
NT's acting is one of the highlights(Not a lone saver as in other movies), with A.P.N's brilliant screen play for a voluminous famous novel,earthy dialogues and an excellent direction as the theme was in the known teriitory (Troupes of artist)
ShanmugaSundaram is depicted as self-centric,Talented,Sensitive and Short-tempered,egoistic and disciplined artist and NT's acting is a show piece of naturalistic acting with all emotional hues well portrayed with the team of supremely talented co-artists.
The scenes to relish are
The opening scene inwhich most of the aspects are revealed without need for much dialogues, The Train Scene, Shanmugasundaram's intended visit to Mohana's place,His frustration and seeking solace in Jil-Jil's den, Nalandhana scene, His skirmishes with Vaithi during contract scenes for Maharaja are exemplary and everyone's delight.

கோவத்துடன் மோகனாவைப் பார்ப்பதும், பேச்சுகொடுக்கும் வைத்தியை "சும்மார்ரா டேய்" என்று சொல்லி வாயடைக்க வைக்கும்போதும் 'கனன்றுகொண்டிருக்கும் சீற்றம், எந்நேரமும் வெடித்து வெளிவரலாம்' என்று நமக்குத் தெரிந்துவிடும். கோவத்திலும் இத்தனை நிறங்களா!
தெய்வமகனின் : damn your hotel என்று சொல்லும்போது ஒரு disappointment கலந்த கோவம், தேவர் மகனில் பொறுப்பில்லாமல் எதிர்த்துப் பேசும் மகனிடம் 'தர்க்கம் பண்றீய?' என்ற சீற்றம், சில பக்கங்கள் முன் நாம் பார்த்த சத்ரபதி சிவாஜியின் கோவம்..இவையெல்லாம் பற்பல இடங்களில் பார்த்தவை. தில்லானாவில் ஒரே படத்தில்...ஏன் இந்த ஒரே காட்சியில்!!
அந்த காட்சித்தொடரே சிறப்பாக வந்திருக்கும். Mood மாறுவது, மனமாற்றம் நிக்ழவது, ஒவ்வொருவருக்கு ஒவ்வொரு பதட்டம். மைனருக்கு, வடிவு'க்கு...என்று ஏ.பி.என் masterclass.
"வேறு ஆரு காப்பாத்துனாஹ"..என்று ஜில்லு நடுங்கும் அழுகுரலுடன் கேட்கும்போது அந்த குழந்தைத்தனம் நம்மை கிட்டத்தட்டநெகிழச்செய்யும்.
சற்று முன்வரை இவர்கள் சண்டை மறந்து சேரக்கூடாதா என்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டிருந்த நாம், மோகனா வம்பிழுப்பதை, 'எத்தனை புத்திசாலி இந்தப் பெண்!' என்று ரசிக்கத் தொடங்கிவிடுகிறோம். APN makes the audience root for the exact opposite, within a matter of minutes!!

One of my friends is a Graduate from Pune Film Institute who started Campus Film society and did his Graduations in Direction and Editing. He considers Sivaji and Chaplin as only two born genius. This is the kind of reach , our NT has, and we are all proud to have fans like you.
தில்லானா பட்டம் கொடுக்கும் காட்சி
இங்கொரு விஷயத்தை நாம் நினைவில் கொள்ள வேண்டும். நாடகக் கொட்டகைக்குப் பிறகு மோகனாவும்-சண்முகமும் இங்கு தான் சந்திக்கிறார்கள்.
சிங்கபுரம் மைனர் திருந்திய விஷயம் எல்லாம் நமக்குத் தான் தெரியும். சண்முகத்துக்கு தெரிந்ததாக படத்தில் சொல்லப்படவில்லை. நாவலில் எப்படி என்று தெரியவில்லை.
சண்முகம் காண்பதெல்லாம், குடும்பத்தோடு மைனர் போட்டியைப் பார்க்க திருவாரூருக்கு வந்திருக்கிறார் என்பது தான். வைத்தி ஏற்படுத்தும் இடையூறுகளை சபையிலிருந்து அகற்றுகிறார் என்பது தான். இதனாலேயே சண்முகம் போன்ற ஒரு சந்தேகப்பேர்வழிக்கு சந்தேகம் போய்விடுமா என்ன?
அந்த ஆட்டத்தின் முடிவில் அந்த சந்தேகம் எங்கே இருந்த இடம் தெரியாமல் காணாமல் போனது? முன்னைவிட ஆழமான ஒரு காதலை மட்டுமே அங்கே காண்கிறோம். இந்தக் கலைஞனுக்கு, மோகனாவின் கலையின் பரிமளிப்பு தன் சந்தேகத்தைத் தாண்டி செல்ல செய்துவிட்டது.
ஒரு absurd foil கொடுக்கவேண்டும் என்றால்: பாலசந்தரின் டூயட்டை நினைத்துப்பாருங்கள். 'அந்த இசையைத் தான் நான் காதலித்தேன்' என்று ஒரு வசனம் வரும். எத்தனை அபத்தமான ஒரு வசனம். என்ன கோமாளித்தனமான ஒரு தருணம். ஒரு அழகான conceptஐ சொதப்பியிருபார்கள்.
ஆனால் தி.மோ-வில் எத்தனை அழகாக காண்பித்திருப்பார்கள். கலைஞனின் கலையால் ஆகர்ஷிக்கப்படும்பொழுது, அந்த கலைஞனின் ஆளுமையை, personalityஐயும் சேர்த்தே உணர்ந்துவிட்டதாகத் தோன்றுவதையல்லவா அந்தக் கணம் காண்பிக்கிறது.
இந்தி இயக்குனர்/நடிகர் குரு தத்'தின் ப்யாஸா'வில் கதாநாயகன் ஒரு கவிஞன். அவன் கவிதைகளைப் படிக்கும் கதாநாயகி வஹீதா ரஹ்மான் அவனை நன்கு அறிந்தவள் போல பேசுவாள். அவன் 'என்னைப் பற்றி உனக்கு எப்படித் தெரியும்?' என்று கேட்க. "உன் (ஆழ்மன வெளிப்பாடான) கவிதைகளையே நான் படித்துவிட்டேனே. இதற்குமேல் உன்னைப் பற்றி தெரிந்துகொள்ள வேறென்ன இருக்கிறது என்கிறாய்" என்பாள்.
கிட்டத்தட்ட அதைத் தான் வார்த்தைகளின்று இக்காட்சியில் இசைமூலம் சாதித்திருப்பார்கள். நமது திரைப்பட வரலாற்றில் ஒரு அழகியல் மைல்கல் இப்படம்.
அந்த உரை ஒரு wonder! தயக்கம், வார்த்தைகளைத் தேடித் துழாவிப் பேசுவது என்று. Spot improvisation என்று சொல்லலாம். ஆனால், சிவாஜியைப் பொருத்தவரை பல takeகள் இருந்தாலும் அதை அப்படியே திரும்ப பேசியிருப்பார் என்பது நமக்குத் தெரியும். பிரமிக்கவேண்டியது தான்.

ஆனால் அந்த வரி சண்முகத்தை எப்படி எல்லம் குத்தியிருக்கும் என்பதை நாம் புரிந்துகொள்ளமுடியும் தானே. நாதஸ்வரத்தைத் தவிர அவனுக்கு என்ன தெரியும்? கலைஞனுக்கே உரித்தான தீவிர உணர்ச்சிகளோடு தான் அவன் உறவுகளை அணுகுகிறான். இம்முனைக்கும் அம்முனைக்குமாக தாவுகிறான். அவன் காதல் எத்தனை தீவிரமோ, அத்தனை தீவிரம் அவன் கசப்புக்கும், வெறுப்புக்கும், கோபத்துக்கும். எல்லாம் தன் சின்னத்தனமான முன்முடிவுகளால், என்பதை இந்தச் சின்னப்பெண் எத்தனை லாவகமாக அவனுக்கு உணர்த்திவிடுகிறாள்!

எழுத்தில் 'ஒரே நேரத்தில் நெகிழ்ச்சியும், பெருமிதமும்' என்று எழுதும் வாக்கியத்தில் கூட அவை அடுத்தடுத்து வரும் சொற்கள். Trivially true. நாம் படித்து, நம் புத்தியில் அவற்றைப் பிணைத்து ஒன்றாக்கிக் கொள்கிறோம். இசையில் simultaneity சாத்தியம் என்றாலும், இசைக்கும் அது ஏற்படுத்தும் உணர்வுக்கும் உள்ள உறவு விவரணை சட்டகங்களுக்கு அப்பார்ப்பட்டது (அதுவே அதன் சிறப்பு). மேலும் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் சற்றளவேனும் மாறக்கூடியது அந்த associations. ஆனால் நடிப்பில் தெளிவின்மை ஒரு தோல்வி. 'அவன் மனத்தெளிவில்லாமல் குழப்பமாக இருந்தான்' என்பதைக் கூட தெளிவாகக் காண்பிக்க வேண்டும். இப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு கலையில் முற்றிலும் வித்தியாசமான இரண்டு உணர்வுகளை வெளிப்படுத்துவது என்பது எத்தனை அபாரமான ஒரு சாதனை என்பதை நாம் சிந்தித்துப் பார்க்க வேண்டும் - and by the way, all this while incidentally happening to play the naadhaswaram flawlessly :shock:
