MGR Aayirathil Oruvan Even 49 Yrs Later
At a time when 10 days of keeping a film in theatres is considered an achievement, the overwhelming trade response for the digitally restored version of MGR’s Aayirathil Oruvan has overjoyed its makers. Coming 49 years after its original release, the superhit film starring MGR, Jayalalithaa and Nambiar will open on close to 120 screens across the State, according to G Chokkalingam, of Divya Films, the firm that bought the original film and restored it digitally.
“Initially we were hoping that it may release on close to a 100 screens, but as I toured Coimbatore, Tiruchy, Madurai and Chennai, all the cities asked for more prints as theatre owners are
keen to exhibit the film,” he said happily. Appreciating the re-release of Aayirathil Oruvan, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa sent a letter of appreciation to Divya Films, hailing it as more than just an entertainer, but a “life lesson that transcends generations”.
MGR legacy still alive!
The evergreen classic of Puratchi Thalaivar MGR, Ayirathil Oruvan is rocking the City again. This yesteryear blockbuster featuring MGR and Jayalalitha set records at the box office in the sixties. It was made almost four decades ago and it portrayed MGR as an Icon of Tamil cinema.
Nearly five theaters are screening this film in the city and the number would cross dozen auditoriums if sub-urban areas are included. Padmini Pictures, the original producer of the film is re- releasing this classic today and hundreds of Thalaivar’s die hard fans are seen eagerly waiting in the long queues before theaters on the opening day.
Balakrishnan, the Manager of Abhirami Mega Mall said that all the tickets for the first day show have been sold out at Annai Abhirami. Last year, Nadodi Mannan was re released by Divya Films and it completed 50 days with full house shows in many theaters including Albert and Bharath. Some of the fans of MGR organized big events with the yesteryear heroines of MGR in the theaters where Nadodi Mannan was released.
No doubt, MGR legacy is still alive and always profitable to the theater owners .
MGR, the box-office Baadshah of Tamil films, is back in business. The late and legendary actor-turned-politician ruled Tamil Nadu for 10 years from 1977 till his demise. He was an indisputable king not only in film circles but also in politics as his foes could only watch as mute spectators as MGR went on to amass successes in successive elections.
One of MGR’s super-duper hit films, Aayirathil Oruvan which released almost five decades back in 1965, is to be re-released in more than 100 cinema halls in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The record-breaking film has been converted digitally with high-quality picture and sound effects. Aayirathil Oruvan, incidentall, was MGR’s first film opposite J. Jayalalithaa, with whom he went on to star in the most number of films.Starring MGR, Jayalalithaa, Nagesh, M.N. Nambiar, R.S. Manohar and many others, the film was produced in a grand manner by B.R. Bandulu, who had been facing severe financial hardships at that time. The film’s success retrieved Bandulu’s career in a huge way. Released on 09.7.1965, Aayirathil Oruvan had music by Viswanathan-Ramamurthy and lyrics by Kannadasan and Vaali. MGR’s majestic, handsome looks and Jayalalithaa’s unlimited beauty ensured the film’s stupendous success.
The digitized version is to hit the sceens in Chennai, elsewhere in Tamil Nadu and Kerala from tomorrow (14th March). It may be recalled that MGR’s films such as Nadodi Mannan, Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban and Adimaipenn, which were re-released in the past, enjoyed huge success at the box-office.- COURTESY NET
