THANGASURANGAM
I have watched Thangasurangam many times in past 5 years but I decided to watch it again . It was a time when the world was mesmerized by Bond flicks helmed by Sean Cornery. Here in Tamil Cinema it was more popularized by South Indian James Bond Mr. Jai Shankar.
NT was slowly getting into action mode with a slew of movies like Sivantha Mann, Thirudan, En Thambi etc. Also Vaathiyar MGR was doing a James bond Flick with Mr. BR Panthalu “Ragasiya Police 115”
NT also came with Thangasurangam but a striking resemblance is both Ragasiya Police 115 & Thangasurangam the story was by Mr. G. Balasubramaniam BA

Thangasurangam has a stellar star cast comprising of Bharathi, veniraadai Nirmala, Nagesh, Javer Sitharaman, G. Varalakshmi, RS Manohar, OAK Devar, Major and others

My father and mother are NT fans . Recently my Chitti came to my home I usually have a habit of watching atleast one movie daily today I watched Thangasurangam again. To my astonishment My mother, chitti were sitting behind me and watching the movie with full concentration. I saw the picture of Thangasurangam in Anjal petti 520 which prompted me to watch and write my views about the movie
People who have not watched this movie don’t read it as the movie has lot of surprises
The movie begins with Burma war and people migrating to India. Varalakshmi hand overs her Kid(NT) to Javer Sitharaman as the Ship becomes overloaded.
After few years the story opens in airport with NT being introduced in aeroplane walking swiftly( Walk by NT is always majestic) to CBI director’s(Major) room where he briefs NT about fake gold issue which threatens to ruin Indian Economy. NT goes to his village till he receives further details about the case and meets his mother with help of Church father( Javer) . NT wears beautiful yellow, brownish T shirt, red dress tied like towel behind and White hat
He comes across Nirmala and her brother Nagesh. NT’s mother decides to conduct marriage between Nirmala& NT . Nirmala also saves NT from a mishap.
The case is officially given to NT and he starts his enquiry. He zeros in a doctor and interrogates him but in vain( NT acting in this scene is a jewel especially when he goes out of Doctor’s room and warns him in case he does not cooperate with him is simply superb)
The scene shifts to a lab where Mr Pai requests scientist to continue the experiment of making Gold which is not accepted by Scientist ( I don’t know his name) . NT meets Barathi in race course where the Doctor is killed. NT enquires Bharathi in hotel room ( The fight scene is one among the best. The same was uploaded by Vasu sir in previous thread). NT even lights a cigarette in Rajini’s style( Ironically its must be said Rajini does it in NT style no doubt Rajini sir refers NT as Style Chakravarthy). NT wears gloves in brown with Jerkin material, his hairstyle, his holding of a long stick to be described in a single word means Style style style.
Cut
NT produces Bharathi before Major and takes her for interrogation in midst of action chase in Rammana style beautiful action block ( walkie talkie is also used remember the period of the movie made in late 1960’s). NT T shirt is typical white (tight one just like Reebok) and green pant. Only continuity miss is before fight his hirt would be out whereas after fight his shirt will be tucked in.
NT keeps Bharathi under his custody with the help of Nirmala and goes out only to find that Nirmala being tied in room and a message is left “ Come to Anbu Illam for further details”
Here Comes NT and is welcomed by Pai and he comes to know Nagesh & Nirmala are not siblings but Pai’s people. Pai advises NT to back out from this case which is refused and he harms NT ( Thermo heater)
(NT wears a oval shaped black glass which is fashion among today’s youth)
In a turn of events Nagesh helps NT they both saves Bharathi( scientist’s daughter), Scientist, Again high adrenaline fight sequence.
Bharathi and NT starts loving each other . Well song was beautifully picturised
NT comes to know about Pai’s movements and attempts to trap him but it is foiled as NT mother informs Pai , who is NT father. NT outburst in the scenes in which he suspects his mother and comes to know the truth and the scene in which he argues with major deserve an applause
The scientist is kidnapped , NT further gets cracks the case and comes to know huge amount of gold is to be smuggled and attempts to foil it and arrests Pai’s left hand( Manohar)
NT manages to go in Thangasurangam and as he wears a tracking chip Police comes near Thangasurangam, when Villans escape they plant a dynamite to kill NT and Bharathi
What happens next is NT spoils their journey by arresting them in ship , Pai escapes only to be caught by NT after a sentimental episode( Pai shooting NT )
NT costumes are just superb ,Also Bharathi looks like Angel in the movie with different costumes. Nagesh is apt especially in scenes where he is cross questioned by NT , reference to Kattabomman, his CID works playing with digs etc. Nirmala for a chage plays a villan girl, OAK devar is as usual good
Rammana continues his trend of naming villans with North Indian names Sukadia in Moondru Ezhutu, LAL in Naan, here its Pai
NT is a feast some may like some dishes in feast, some may like other items but everyone will relish the feast. You cannot ignore the feast
Here its subtle , methodical acting
